Full textOn January Ist, 1988, the Nationalist government lifted the regulations which had been restraining the press freedom in Taiwan for about 40 years. The first newspaper of the United Daily News Group was published in 1951, issuing 12 000 copies a day. In 1988, the Group owned three newspapers in Taiwan (United Daily News, Economic Daily News, Min Sheng Daily), issuing 1,7 million copies, and published one newspaper in the USA (World Journal) , one in France (Europe Journal) and one in Thailand (The Universal Daily News). The first part of the dissertation presents the Taiwanese press and the United Daily News Group's development before 1988, under the authoritarian rule of the Kuomintang. The second part presents the new situation after 1988, the United Daily News Group company which has 5500 employees in Taiwan and made 700 millions NT dollars profits in 1996 ; it also studies the ideology of the Group whose leaders support the unification of Taiwan with the Chinese Mainland. The purpose of this dissertation, in studying the United Daily News Group's and the Taiwanese press history, is to make an evaluation of the island's press liberalisation and Taiwan's democratic transition

Full textPlantu, one of the columnists of the french newspaper Le Monde, has been drawing since 1972 cartoons which cause a lot of readers to smile rather than laugh. The reason is that the humorous aspect of his drawings hide both emotion and thought as regards the national and international news. Our research aims first of all at showing that Plantu is non only a journalist but also a militant. He fights for Democraty, the Human Rights and the improvement of Man's living conditions. Our research aims too at showing that Plantu shares the fundamental values of the magazines he has been working for ; he has even managed several times to move them away of their official line. As a conclusion, we would like to attach the greatest importance to considering "the newspper cartoon" as a political chronicle. We would like to insist, too, on the necessity to distinguish it from the humorous pages or comic strips ; we prefer to link it to political science

Full textThe thesis is based on two main ideas : first, the historic past of Spain creates a collective popular imagination based on stereotypes, second the human reality of the Moroccan immigration contributes to give another image of the link between the natives and the new "comers". The argument rests at the same time on a theoretic reflection, to put into perspective the relationship between press and image of the Other. Following this logic, the socio-semiotic dimension allows to identify the discourse of the press. Different speech addressing the journalistic image of the other two aspects : the concept of categorization and identity, based on the distinction between endogroupe ("We") and exogroupe ("Them"). The visibility of Moroccan immigrants appears through specific criteria : the rhetoric, the formal description, the photo, the recurring subjects. In total, the purpose of the thesis is to show that the presence of "newcomers" calls into question the identity of the country and has led to the representation of the "Other" in the Spanish press

Full textPolitical pluralism remains an important item of the political evolution in Senegal. This study aims at questioning the reality of the multiparty system, by paying special attention to the social and political environment of this unprecedented experience. What are the factors, actors and appropriate contingencies at stake in such an evolution? Throughout a depiction of the relationships between the then governing socialist party and the opposition parties, between the latter and the spiritual chief families, the civil society, the private press, labor unions and student movements we tried to bring into light the process of the invention of the multiparty system in Senegal. This neo-institutional and strategic approach of our object allows us to show that political pluralism has been deterred from its main goal. Therefore, in order to explain the gap between the status of democratic reference of Senegal in Africa and the endless underground tricks, we chose stress the informal side of its political pluralism. This situation indeed enabled us to understand the various paths taken by this system. It seems today that a superficial multiparty system in its beginnings can find internal resources allowing it to change governments by way of ballot boxes without actually guaranteeing a genuine democratic society. If the organization of the political competition inevitably rests on political parties, it would never ever be optimal without the actual involvement of institutions whose main objective is to ensure that the interests of all fringes of the society are equally defended

Full textThe study of the frech press for the years 1970-1971 often shows a confined vision of the jordanian-palestinian conflict : King Husayn, représentative of a monarchy allied to the West, is viewed throughmajor thematics which still remain. The political system itself apparently rely on the Hashemite monarch whereas ministers did play a key role. Finally the army enable the study of the bedouin constituent of the society and the one of of the major archetypal figures whether it's a matter of the arabian-muslin values or the references regarding the mythical Arab Legion. The study of the Palestinians sers out the question of identity which has been tackled by comparing with other nations. Then comes the question of militant organizations framework Furthermore it's through the repercussions of the urban guerilla tactics and the plane hijackings that the palestinian conflict found itself defined by the journalists. As for the civilians in the majority of both sides, they were rarely taken into account even through they were the main victims of the fighing, from the label of civil war or fraticide applied to the conflict. "Black September" shows the persistency of the radings frame remaining today from the moment one's study a conflict which specificities are the opposition between "progressives" and "reactionaries" a characteristic for seventies

Full textThe research dedicated to the normative position of the French language was done by professional or occasional observers in six national French newspapers. The aim was to provide an access to the idea of French language norms transmitted through epilinguistic discourses made public by the print media. In addition, based on comments and ideas collected, the study of extra-linguistic factors in the above-mentioned epilinguistic discourses was also in the scope of our interests. The reference lists corpus included daily and weekly national newspaper articles from Figaro, Valeurs Actuelles, Libération, Le Monde, L’Express and Le Nouvel Observateur. The analysis of epilinguistic discourses was firmly based on a qualitative study of elements that structure the unilingual French ideology (lexicographic, semantic, stylistic and contextual analysis, as well as linguistic and cultural interpretation). This analysis permitted to access the representation of so-called “good French” offered by these articles. This study also made possible to discover the opinions of French language ‘desecration’ supporters

Full textThe Communications strategies of several categories of actors contributing to the public debate ( through the media ) help fashion the figures concerning Cameroonian public opinion and civil society. This thesis explores two issues : What are the meanings of the concepts of " public opinion" and "civil society", in relation to the Cameroonian society ? Who use these concepts and to what ends? How can journalists contribute to the creation and management of a public sphere and will the result be the establishment of a liberal society ? The analysis of 371 editorials, columns, and contributions in three Cameroon newspapers and two Panafrican news magazines between 1992 and 2000 led us to the following conclusion : the changes which started in the 1990's, concern the transition from a " court society" to a "civil society". This is considered as a substitute for the deficiencies of the state. The media invoke "civil society" as the main actor in politics- this exemplifies both its sociological reality and that of public opinion. In conclusion, by a metaphorical convocation, a "figurativation", a personification of the civil society and public opinion, and finally by a double " presentification" of the public in the social field, media discourse favours the creation of a public sphere. This sphere, itself subsumes and inter-relates with other societal configurations

Full textPerception of Canada in Time and Newsweek magazines (1995-2000) describes the Canadian presence in two main American newsmagazines. Canada appears as a peaceful country, even if, both magazines present violence-related stories involving Canadians. Canada is a multicultural country, and as far as diversity is concerned, the country does not seem peaceful. Quebeckers are divided concerning the question of their belonging to Canada and many other communities feel the effects of rejection (racism…); the Inuit and the French Quebeckers have chosen nationalism to express their different identities. While Canadians of different heritage are concerned by their identity in Canada, the whole country feels the impact of the American presence. And while Canadians focus on the substance of their national identity, Time and Newsweek journalists perceive Canada as a distinct country with its own characteristics based on peace, multiculturalism or even Nature; characteristics representing Canada in the world

Full textThe links between press and literature are very tight. This statement is all the more obvious if one observes from an historical point of view both the Congolese literature, and the Congolese politics and society. From 1504 on, schools to teach how to read and write have been opened by Portuguese Catholic missionaries. Different kinds of publications, often related to religion, were printed during the following centuries. In 1926, the international Conference in Zoute, Belgium, states the necessity to promote the publication of literary works in African languages. The emergence of writing using French language results from three sociocultural facts: literature contests, organized by the Native Arts Friends, various publications in magazines, and the creation, in 1943, of the Star Library publishing house. But the colonial policy emphasizes above all elementary and practical teachings, unlikely to help literary talents stand out. It was not until the foundation of the monthly « Congolese Voice » (1945-1959), by the poet A. -R. Bolamba, that a literary platform became available to the « developed » ones. Another author, revealed in the press, deserves some attention: J. F. Lyeki, Regarding poetry, between 1960 and 1967, through literary circles and newspapers opinion columns, such as « Documents for Action » and « Academic Presence », authors managed to be published and were awarded literary prizes. During the Mobutu era, literature, at the start rather essay-oriented at his own initiative, ends up going back to a more artistic and cultural style in the 1970’s; yet after 1975, publications will come mainly from writers in exile. The first essays dealing with theater started in 1955 with A. Mongita, but this genre will not really flourish until the 1970’s. One name still stands out: M. Mikanza, whose most famous play is Trial in Makala (1977). As far as stories are concerned –novels, short-stories, tales-, one name prevailed during the 1970’s: B. Zamenga. Traditional values are then challenged in the face of modernism. Yet Zairian literature will not assert itself until references to authors - almost all from Lovanium University and mostly living abroad, such as V. Y. Mudimbe, G. Ngal, M. N. Kadima, P. Ngandu, M. Buabua wa Kayembe, S. Djungu, and Cl. Faïk Nzuji- were made in the press. Among literature critics, the work of A. Mbuyamba, in the review « Academic Presence », deserves to be praised

Full textThis research focuses on the analysis of changes and evolutions of the public space in two different contexts - France, an "old" democracy and Kazakhstan, a "recent" democracy ". This concept is analyzed through the study of media coverage of an election campaign and presidential elections in the French and Kazakh press. The main objective is to grasp the way in which, through the construction of the image of the president, the press discourse highlights contradictions between, on the one hand, the development of public space and democracy, and on the other, the need to sanctify and personalize the image of the “sovereign”. The case studies concern French presidential elections of 2012 and Kazakh presidential elections of 2011 and 2015. The corpus consists of 2385 articles from the following newspapers: Libération, Le Figaro, Le Nouvel Observateur and Le Point for France, and Kazakhstanskaya pravda (The Truth of Kazakhstan), Egemen Kazakhstan (Independent Kazakhstan), Svoboda slova (The Freedom of speech) and Zhas Alach for Kazakhstan. We adopt a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the press discourse. Quantitative analysis is based on a survey processed with Modalisa software. The qualitative analysis is based on three concepts: the construction of the "two bodies" (Ernst Kantorowicz), the construction of the candidate's ethos (Patrick Charaudeau) and the narrative schema (Algirdas Julien Greimas). The comparative analysis includes: the comparison of the image of the candidates within the same newspaper and then between two newspapers of the same country and, finally, between the press discourses of the two countries. This research is structured in three parts. The first part is a historical analysis of the construction of the "sovereign" image: from sacralization to desacralization under the influence of the emergence and development of public space. The second part studies contemporary public spaces and the evolution of the image of the "sovereign" towards personalization. The last part studies the construction of the three semiotic regimes (sacralisation, desacralization and personalization) in the press of the two countries

Full textObjectives: Ivory Coast, following the example of many other countries of Africa in the South of Sahara, was not spared by the waves of democracy of the end of 1980s and the beginning of 1990s. Theses waves led to the spring of the press in the country of Félix Houphouët-Boigny already shaken by a severe economic crisis. The Ivory Coast populations, in the grip of the existential fears due to this difficult context, sank into identical crises. We wanted, in this new context of freedom acquired in the pain, to analyze the role of the daily press. Does it generate or does it simply reflect these identical crises? What do the populations victims of these identical crises think? Methodology: In our study which uses the qualitative logic, we first opted for the analysis of contents of the most representative three Ivory Coast daily papers for three reasons at least. Indeed, let us note that on the professional level, it is these three daily papers which were widely recommended to us by the journalists; ideologically, these daily papers also represent the three main political formations of the country ; socially, these daily papers recruit their readerships in three main ethnic families of Ivory Coast. Secondly, by way of complement in the analysis of contents, we considered indispensable to consult the populations concerned through a survey and a direct observation over a long period. Results: These different approaches allowed us to highlight the fact that the Ivory Coast identical crises are not caused by the daily press. It is rather the politics, relieved by their fanaticized activists who cause the problems. The analysis of contents survey and the direct observation bring to light this established fact. However, the daily press is not completely innocent. It plays a relatively important role by increasing, by amplifying and by propagating these identical crises in the country. Our analyses highlight the existence of the determinism of one quintuple identical trilogy which feeds these crises since a long time in Ivory Coast. Conclusion: Our study, considering the chronic dimension of the Ivory Coast identical crises, suggests: to take the heat out of the debate with the aim of a deep diagnosis of the problems; to depoliticize the sensitive questions such as the immigration and the rural land; to educate the people in the critical reading of the press and begin a real national reconciliation. The use of the communication tools would be helpful

Full textThis study proposes a journey into the « Black African Islam » throughout its social and historical construction. Thus, we wanted to analyze the political effects of the religious field transformation going from 1960 to 2000, taking as a case the Murid Brotherhood. In fact, since the colonial period in Senegal, the murid brotherhood has with the political power relations based on a reciprocity services which was becoming a kind of exchange System. This Relationship places on the political stage three characters: the sheikh, his follower and the political power. Designated under the expression of Senegalese Social Contract, it will undergo important changes linked to situations and the transformations of the modem world. However, since the year 2000, the new president Abdoulaye Wade starts with a new paradigm concerning the relations between Politicians and Saints by showing publicly his belonging of the murid brotherhood, and multiplying actions in favour of murid projects. By doing so, he put again the question of "secularism", a fundamental principal in the Senegalese Constitution, into debate. This study will also question the relations between the murid saints and the press in Senegal often under self-censorship

Full textThe conflict in Gaza in the winter of 2008-2009 seems at first primarily as a conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas. But the press has given it regional and international dimensions. The press is more oriented towards the subjects of geopolitics and international relations. The newspapers studied generally explore the same subjects, but do not always share the same conclusions. One of the characteristics by the press is the intervention of the viewpoints in information. Journalists frequently expose their positions. From the point of view of International Relations theory, European, Egyptian and even Iranian action isdictated by a realistic approach to international relations for dialogue and distribution of interests. While the action of the United States (from the time of George BUSH son) is an idealistic approach, ideological and rigid which excludes all actors (state and non-state) from the resolution of this conflict. The conflict took place in an international context deprived from supreme authority that imposes order. UN has an only humanitarian role in that conflict. The conflict takes on a dimension other than political. Part of the authors gives it a religious dimension, even the issue of civilization. Press has an deficiency of perspective and historical analysis. It does not contextualize the events. This is a situation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in general. At the end, the press gives an interest in the conflict in Gaza despite the disaffection of a highly increasing number among the French. This observation leads to the release of less visibility to this conflict

Full textMachicado, Gallo Rosmery.
The thesis “discourse of autonomy in the editorials of El Deber y La Razón in Bolivia” shows how each newspaper unfolds its own discursive strategy, whether in favor or not of the topic, the weight of the prominent issues, a certain way it represents actors involved in the issue, the arguments used and the defense or criticism is the central point that articulates the institutional ideology with which reaches its readers. The study of de autonomy editorials in the space of four years (2006-2006) realizes ideas and recognizes a crucial aspect of reality-polarization-, instead of proposing answers deepens crisis. Especially when the defense of the old regionalism continues vigorously, the approach of autonomy at various levels is the new stage where evidence shows of how difficult is governance when agreements are not reached because particular interests at each level play a great role. The truth is that for better or worse the autonomies have been included in the NCPE and like it or not we must find a way to work, this will be possible only if the media are also partners in a real practice of making visible not only the negative aspects of confrontation of ideas but calm things down and find the common ground on which they can start work. This work has also revealed the need for greater depth in courses on information management, either through specialized journalism or training in undergraduate directed to pay attention to updating the contents of the subjects of history and politics. Or even better, to propose specific journalism career because it is a need that has not yet been addressed in the Bolivian context.

Full textThis thesis covers a period which begins at the death of Franco, in 1975, and finishes at the legalization of the homosexual marriage, in 2005. Its principal source is the Spanish press, first of all two newspapers whith opposite ideological leanings : El País and ABC. The aim of the first chapter is both to show which forms the rejection and the acceptance of the homosexual realities took in Spain between 1975 and 2005, in the texts and in daily life and to explain why the evolutions of these two aspects of the topic can only be partially comparable in spite of their interactions partially because of the limits of the dichotomy “Rejection and Acceptance” about such a topic, in such a country and during such a period. These limits are the object of the second chapter particularly dedicated to the facts for which it’s difficult to say if they are part of the rejection or part of the acceptance - because they can just show an interest in the topic, a simplistic representation of the homosexual realities sometimes in absence of a sufficient knowledge of them. Consequently, the third chapter consists in explaining how this aporia can be surmounted taking into consideration the linguistic and ontological dimension of the issues of this thesis, first of all in a country like Spain which went through a period of transition, between 1975 and 2005, in terms of relations to the homosexuality, provoking a sort of war of the essences which, rapidly, didn’t concern any longer the existence of homosexuality itself

Full textThis study analyzes the salient problem formulations, questions and perspectives that pervade the canonical debate in swedish press between 2010 and 2020. The intention is to better understand their expressions and their relations to swedish language studies, with a particular focus on how literature is viewed in the swedish subject as it is formulated in the high school curriculum, Gy-11. The questions asked are phrased in line with this purpose, with the goal of distinguishing the discourse formations that manifest themselves in the canonical debate and how these relate to and might have implications for the study of literature in the subject of swedish. Furthermore, the study aims to understand the canonical debate as an expression of certain important tendencies of our contemporary situation. With the help of a critical theoretical framework, the important and salient features of the present are drawn and shown to correspond with the reactionary trends that underpin the canonical debate as a solution to problems and challenges characteristic of our time. For the purpose of showing the relationship between the canonical debate and the diagnostic determinations of the present, the study used an eclectic discourse analytical approach. Through this, the canon was understood as an element, a particularly contentious concept, in two central discourses: one pertaining to questions of swedishness, the other to questions of educational refinement. The study shows that the canon is associated with ideologically separate perspectives and interpretations. These are in turn understood as different subject positions. Chains of equivalences were then used to clarify these subject positions within the discourse and the terms with which canon as an element were associated and understood.

Full textThe research of the articles about Colombia published by El País from 1991 to 2002 is the main objective of this investigation. The first part summarizes the relationship between the press and power, while it reflects upon the press and its history in Spain until arriving the establishment of the newspaper El País. A journey through Colombian history serves as a framework to set the stage of the span of time investigated through the Madrid newspaper.Colombia, former Spanish colony, was known in Spain, firstly through the writings of the Cronista de Indias, which decided to present the Other. To what extent do these images persevere through El País? The quantitative and statistical analysis of 1,059 articles demonstrates 10 categories, three standing out: politics, armed conflict, and drug trafficking. The second part deals with the quantitative analysis of the published articles by the newspaper from 1996 and 2002 from the assertions of Teun Van Dijk. El País, from its structure, gives details as a “fourth power,” an image of Colombia that seems to be determined from prejudices and stereotypes

Full textSufism, the spiritual facet of Islam, has a great impact on social, religious, political and cultural values of the Southern part of Punjab, Pakistan. This movement of Islamic mysticism emerged from Iraq in very early days of Islam as a practice of self-awareness that further transformed in a concrete foundation for spiritual knowledge and intellectual debate to its seekers and followers. Later, it converted into a dynamic institutional movement in the 12th century, and in the 13th century this movement had established firm grounds here, in South Punjab, whose continuation can be noted hitherto. This institution served people, irrespective of their religion, and has a great history of moral conduct and religious tolerance. That is why, in the recent scenario of Islamic extremism, Sufism has become the focal point of media debates, and the Government of Pakistan also formed 'Sufi Advisory Council' to counter the ideology of terrorism. Moreover, in recent days when the technologies have made the world a global village due to its ultra-fast modes of transportation and broadcast, the role of media is considered as an effective tool of mass communication and propagation against terrorism. Ocusing on the importance of Sufism and media in current dismal situation of religious intolerance, the purpose of this work is to contribute to the contemporary studies of media and religion by presenting analysis of popular Urdu press of South Punjab, Pakistan regarding Sufi publications. For this research work, we analyzed the history of sufism, its development and achievements in South Punjab, and recent Sufi culture in the region. Moreover, we studied the relationship of media and religion and then investigated Sufi publications of leading Urdu newspapers to examine the theme and frequency ofpublications, news stories, articles, photos, and advertisement. Further, we conducted a survey among the students of religious studies of madrassas and regional public university to know the impact of Urdu newspapers regarding Sufism. In a nutshell, the results of our research exposed deep penetration of Sufism in the region and vital role of Urdu press of South Punjab in promoting Sufi beliefs, rituals and practices among the masses, through their publications. In addition, the results of the survey revealed that Sufi teachings and poetry inspired the majority of all religious sects of Pakistan namely Ahl-e-Hadith, Barelvis, Deobandi, and Shia. However, the rituals and practices of Sufism are accepted only in Barelvis of both institutions, madrassas and the regional public university; whereas affection for Sufi rituals is found, in some extent, among the university students of other sects. Moreover, the majority of respondents, from both sides of religious students of madrassas as well the public university, demonstrated their dissatisfaction with the Sufi publications of newspapers

This thesis suggests to indicate throughout 783 french speakin algerian press articals, how the painful collective memory, caused by the colonisation and war, come up to mention the current relationship between France and Algeria. In four independant local newspapers emerging from the freedom of speech initated in the 90s, El watan, Le Quotidien d'Oran. Liberté and l'Expression, the study of this period is a « discursive moment » contained by two presidential elections, one in France (N. Sarkozy in 2007), the other in Algeria (A. Bouteflika reelected in 2009). Varying the different angles of analysis (content analysis, enunsiative analysis, argument-based analysis, textometry), bring out a general overview for the different elements and micro--corpus considered. In a perspective of dominante enonciativ and discursive, the related titles to the french nuclear testing in the 60s are investigated and the designation of events (« the war of Algeria », « 8th of May 1945 ») and the protagonists . A contextual analysis of the comparative and argumentative content about the different treatment of the four newspapers of some propose events. The exploration of the textometry will complete the analysis

Full textFreedom of the press is all opportunities for citizens of a country to have an opinion and expressit freely across media platforms. In Africa, new constitutions promulgated in early 1990,following popular uprisings, guarantee individual and political freedoms. But in reality, freedom of the press, which remains the main gauge of a credible democracy is far from complete. The present study intended to investigate the factors that can better guarantee the freedom of thepress in Francophone West Africa. It took three points of comparison for assessing the fourcountries, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo. The first parameter, the legal environment, itwas found that moderns legislations in Francophone African countries is modeled on the Frenchmodel. Also, the rights and benefits granted to key journalists in France by the Act of 29 July1881 on the freedom of the press are they stated in the laws governing the press in Benin, Côted'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo. The second title is devoted to the economic realities of the press andto conclude that in all four countries, journalists working in precarious conditions that do notguarantee their independence from the information. Finally in the third part of the study showed that the relationship between the press and politicalpower are decisive in respect of the freedom of the press

Full textBased on a corpus of 436 texts of German book reviews published in five newspapers of non-specialized press during the first half of the year 2012, this study investigates the discourse of German literary criticism. To try and identify constituent characteristics of the review, three areas of research are envisaged: the textual, discursive and metatexual perspectives. Traditionally conceived with regards to function, the notion of text is considered here in terms of shape. By considering the notions of sequences and periods, developed within the text linguistics, this study identifies a reservoir of forms which underpin the composition and the configuration of the reviews. Besides, the discursive perspective allows us to get a sense the speaking subject of the reviews as a transition for speech and knowledge. The literary critic actually benefits from putting himself in an institutional position that marks his/her relation to knowledge in order to have the best influence on the reader. The challenge is to identify possible linguistic markers which serve this argumentative approach. Finally, the metatextual perspective obliges us to conceive the review in its relationship with the source text. The book review is a real dialogue with the criticized book, the criticism explicitly exploits strategies borrowed from the literary and journalistic speeches. Textual processes of repetition such as reformulation, quotation, allusion or contamination threat to undermine the metatext into a hypertext. These three axes allow to approach the review as a genre, in the interface between text and discourse. The results confirm the idea that the genre must be approached not in a static way, as a list of invariants, but in a dynamic way, as the product of the interference of several discursive genres. Finally, what is at stake is a better understanding of the production and of the reception of the reviews
