Abstract:
In Negotiating the Hotel Nacional de Cuba: Politics, Profits, and Protest, Erica N. Morawski positions that Havana hotel (McKim, Mead & White, 1930) as a significant symbol and space in the negotiation of national identities under the government of Cuban president Gerardo Machado y Morales. Through analysis of archival materials and architectural design, she shows how the project embodied complex negotiations between the machadato, dedicated to creating the hotel as a national monument, and the U.S. conglomerate charged with financing and building it. Looking beyond the hotel's construction to its role in the Revolution of 1933, Morawski demonstrates how the machadato's efforts to define national identity through the hotel positioned it as a key focus of activists who wanted to define Cuban national identity on their own terms, and who engaged not in negotiation but in armed resistance.

Abstract:
Ben Hom sat at his desk at McKibbon Hospitality’s Tampa corporate office. He waited for his meeting with the Regional Vice President of Operations (RVPO), who oversaw the Tampa market to discuss the 2023 budget for his 10 hotels. The RVPO feared that staffing shortages and labor costs would wreck his budgets again, as they had in 2022. Hom knew that labor costs were the second most significant variable in the budget, behind revenue, and getting anything close to accurate seemed impossible. Hom understood the RVPO’s frustration and knew similar concerns were echoing across the company. The labor force that the industry had relied upon for decades had evaporated. What worked before Covid-19 was no longer effective. Hom contemplated his options for reliable and lower-cost housekeeping staff and the best solution to this problem. Hom was Vice President of Human Resources at McKibbon Hospitality, a third-party hotel management company with 100 hotels in eight states encompassing 23 brands and 13 ownership groups (Exhibit 1). The term "Great Resignation" was coined as a systemic labor shortage resulting from resignations from current jobs or not returning to a previous position discarded because of the lower demand due to Covid-19 restrictions. Since Covid-19, hourly labor costs had escalated rapidly and varied drastically across the portfolio. There was an industry-wide labor shortage, especially for Housekeeping. Also, due to the “Great Resignation,” recruiting and retaining quality hourly associates was incredibly competitive. Hom was acutely aware of the problems and had several potential solutions to the staffing challenges. Raising starting salaries would have aided recruiting but would have reduced profit margins. Foreign workers with H2B visas could have provided needed recruits at the government-defined prevailing wage in each market, typically lower than the market wage. Staffing companies could have been used as needed but included a 30-50% premium cost. Hom also wondered if there was a way to invest in analytics and technology to disrupt the historical labor model. While solving the staffing problem was necessary for his managers, Hom also had to satisfy the goals of McKibbon’s client, the hotel owner, to deliver high-profit margins using data-driven solutions, as this was key to the company’s continued growth.

Abstract:
President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo has determined the strategic role of tourism as a leading sector in national development in his two leadership periods. However, since the emergence of the Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020, the tourism industry and its related sectors, including hotels, food and beverage establishments, cleaning services, local tour guides, and transportation, have experienced considerable setbacks. The performance of the tourism industry amid the Covid-19 outbreak has received significant attention. The Covid-19 outbreak, which began in 2020, has restricted people’s mobility, particularly impacting the travel of international tourists to Indonesia. Companies operating in the tourism sector, such as those in the hotel, resort, and cruise line industries, now face various risks, such as decreasing revenue and operating income. This decline will undoubtedly result in financial hardships. This study examines the differences in financial distress and litigation risk of hotel, resort, and cruise line sub-industry companies prior to and following the onset of the pandemic. The Paired Sample T-test is utilized for hypothesis testing, contingent upon fulfilling the normality test requirement. However, if the normality test results indicate the non-normal distribution of residuals, non-parametric statistical methods, such as the McNemar test and Wilcoxon test, will be utilized for data analysis. The study presents findings that demonstrate differences in financial distress and litigation risk within the Hotel, Resort, and Cruise Line Sub-Industry companies prior to and following the pandemic.

Abstract The caricature published in Chemistry and Industry, 2 August 1947, is Fred May’s impressions of the luncheon offered to the XIth International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry at the May Fair Hotel, London, 18 July 1947 by the Society of Chemical Industry to distinguished chemists on the occasion of its centennial [1]. Fred May (1891-1976) was a caricaturist and painter, who sent his first cartoons from the front in 1917. May insists on the strenuous time the toastmaster had during the dinner that welcomed many prominent British and international figures in the chemical sciences and industry. Dr Leslie H. Lampitt, president of the SCI, chairman of the Congress and treasurer of IUPAC (1947-1957) “expressed that welcome in a very homely way” [1]. Abstract:
As a result of the changing business environment, decision-makers need more and more information. For businesses to successfully compete in our globalized world, an in-depth analysis of their business processes and product structure is the basis for their decisions. Competition to meet consumer expectations forces managers to constantly monitor the cost of their products and services, changes in the cost structure, and review their pricing policies. The value of available information about the company's internal processes, products, and service characteristics has increased among the company's external and internal stakeholders as well. After the First World War, there was a need for a uniform accounting system to be put together by the participants of the sector with specific characteristics. As a result of these efforts, the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI) was created, which serves to satisfy the information needs of managers involved in the hospitality industry. The document builds on the content framework of cost accounting, but at the same time, it does not take a firm position on the question of the distribution of overheads. This study explores the issue and practice of the distribution of overheads among participants in the Hungarian hotel industry. The basic population of the primary research was represented by hotels with a legal relationship with members of the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association (HHRA). Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire, ended in December 2016 with the participation of 74 respondents. At the time of the closing of the questionnaire survey, the number of hotel units with HHRA membership was 398. The willingness to answer was, therefore, 18.59% among the members. Consequently, the proportion of the sample population is 7.75% compared to 955 operating hotels. To refresh the conclusions from the survey, a repeated questionnaire was carried out in May 2022 within the focus group formed by the management of AHHR (president, general secretary) and the six prominent regional leaders. A total of 6 people participated in the repeated survey through written or oral responses. The results of empirical research with a sample show that the participants of the Hungarian hotel industry mainly rely on the traditional cost allocation methods to formulate the practice of dividing overheads, but at the same time, they seem to be in the direction of adapting modern procedures efforts made.

Abstract:
Hotel XY Semarang is a star hotel that provides various services and facilities, so it is necessary to increase cost efficiency without reducing the value provided to customers. This study aims to analyze the cost efficiency of activities by applying the Activity-Based Management method using accurate cost information to reduce non-value-added activities. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. This study first calculated the room rental cost using Activity-Based Costing, then calculated the value of cost efficiency with the Activity-Based Management method and tested the hypothesis to determine whether there is a significant difference after the implementation of Activity Based Management. The results showed that Hotel XY Semarang still calculates room rental costs using the traditional method. After implementing the Activity Based Costing method, the results show the difference in under costing in the President Suite room types and over costing in the Deluxe Room, Junior Suite, and Executive Suite room types. The implementation of Activity Based Management can reduce costs by Rp. 734.526.570 or increase cost efficiency by 7.91% of the total cost of Rp. 9.287.146.443.

It cannot have been a coincidence that the bombs and missiles that rained down on Baghdad at the beginning of the American invasion of Iraq on 20 March 2003 fell just where the world’s television cameras could capture the resulting explosions. President Bush had promised shock and awe and there it was, carefully designed to look as spectacular as possible for the journalists beaming pictures and descriptions from the Palestine Hotel. It was a deliberate piece of media manipulation intended to remind the Arab states, Pakistan and Afghanistan, of American military might.

Abstract:
As Carey McWilliams notes in Southern California Country: An Island on the Land (1946), theatricality has persisted as a central tactic of empire in the U.S. borderlands—from the rituals Spanish missionaries used to attract Native Americans to the historical dramas of Anglo-American boosters. The early decades of the twentieth century saw a number of plays that, in the words of Chelsea K. Vaughn, “romanticized the Spanish and Mexican periods of California history before assigning them comfortably to the past.” These include John S. McGroarty’s The Mission Play (1912) and Garnet Holme’s adaptation of Ramona (1923) as well as his original drama The Mission Pageant of San Juan Capistrano (1924). Such dramas were anticipated by ceremonial pageants that took place at Mission Revival hotels throughout the early twentieth century—to wit, Governor Theodore Roosevelt’s visit to the 1899 Rough Riders Reunion at the Castañeda Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and President William Howard Taft’s 1909 Columbus Day sojourn at the Glenwood Mission Inn, in Riverside, California. Each of these “hospitality pageants” casts the visiting dignitary as a typological protagonist—the Anglo-American “antitype” of the Spanish “type” embodied in conquistadores and/or missionaries.

The 2020 arrest and subsequent trial of Paul Rusesabagina fostered controversy about Rwanda’s human rights record and the political dominance of President Paul Kagame against oppositional voices. Despite human rights organizations and even the European Union condemning the arrest and questioning the ability for him to receive a fair trial, Rwandans remain resolute in their desire to seek justice against Rusesabagina. He is best known as the African version of Oscar Schindler because of the 2004 movie, Hotel Rwanda. However, the historical narrative of Rusesabagina’s heroism is questioned within Rwanda. Additionally, he is accused of forming ties to numerous terrorist groups which committed deadly attacks in Rwanda. This article examines Rusesabagina’s role during and after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and the impact of his arrest and trial on Rwanda’s foreign relations.

On October 31, 1988, in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel attended by Congressmen and members of the artistic community. President Reagan signed the 1988 Berne Convention implementation Act. This Act allowed the United States to join the international Berne Convention lor the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works as of March, 1989. Although the Act somewhat expands the availability of U.S. copyright protection to European atilhors, it affects U.S. authors' rights even less, practically speaking. Perhaps that explains why only three major U.S. daily newspapers, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times, briefly mentioned this historic moment for the internal ional copyright environment. This article explores why and how the U.S. has joined the Berne Convention after more than 102 years, and the effect that this will have un the availability of U.S. copyright protection to foreign authors. Before considering the technical consequences of the Berne Convention Implementation Act, we give a brief overview of two relevant international copyright treaties and their major differences.

Language, besides being a means of communication, is also a form of culture and the identity of a group. Language can be used to identify groups with one another. The importance of using language in a group has prompted the government to issue policies that encourage Indonesians to use Indonesian in public spaces. One of them is Presidential Regulation Number 63 of 2019 Article 33 concerning the use of the Indonesian language stipulating that buildings or buildings erected must use the Indonesian language. Yogyakarta as an area that has become a tourist destination has many five-star hotels. However, some naming star hotels in Yogyakarta are not in accordance with Presidential Regulation Article 33 Number 63 of 2019. The purpose of this study is to identify how many star hotels in Yogyakarta have their names according to policy, identify what language is often used in naming star hotels in Yogyakarta, and find the meaning of the name of the hotel. This research method uses a combined method with a sequential explanatory strategy, the first stage of research uses a quantitative descriptive method and continues with a qualitative method. The results of the study, if a word-by-word analysis was carried out, the most hotel names used Indonesian. If analyzed according to language variations, hotel names mostly use variations of Indonesian and foreign names. The meanings contained in many hotel names indicate visual beauty, luxury, and good service. This study will examine the potential of Islamic hotel services framed by Pakistani hoteliers. The halal lifestyle is increasing worldwide; consequently, a parallel ecosystem is evolving in many Muslim and non-Muslim countries to cope with market demand. The halal laws and standards mainly regulate the import and export of food products in Pakistan but the majority of hotel business in Pakistan is self-claimed halal. Even though the hotel is certified by the halal authority, the GMP is still not fully standardised as halal. The Pakistan hotel industry is mainly composed of SME businesses. Western presidency and operational standards shape Pakistan's current hospitality management activities within the commercial accommodation sector. Furthermore, these standards are not sensitive to the religious values and socio-cultural perceptions of Islamic culture. In the current study, the hotelier responded to 48 variables in six operating segments for hotels. The hoteliers were optimistic about developing fully operational Islamic hotels for sensitive customers as competitive to conventional hotels. The government should devise a policy to establish and adopt Islamic tourism in the national tourism policy.

President Joko Widodo has issued a ban on all people to go home on Eid al-Fitr 1441 Hijri to suppress the spread of the covid19 virus. The purpose of this paper is to find out what the impact of the prohibition of going home due to the co-pandemic19 on the air transport business in Indonesia. One of the sectors affected by the prohibition of going home is the tourism sector. Another sector affected by air transport is the aviation itself. Various sectors, both formal and informal, experienced a very significant decrease in sales and impacted on rising unemployment in Indonesia. Also affects unemployment. Data collection techniques are using secondary data that is data obtained from previous researchers to be processed based on the author's personal thoughts. The results obtained from this study are a decrease in the number of passengers per February 2020 domestic flights by 10.06%, while international flights decreased by 31.25%. This certainly has the potential to go down further after the prohibition of going home. PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk's total revenue. In Q1 2020, it decreased by 33%. In addition to the high season period, namely the Eid Mubarak, school holidays, and Hajj and Umrah this year, it is estimated that there will be no increase in the number of passengers. In March 2020 there was a decrease in hotel room occupancy by 20.64% of YoY. This decline figure is interpreted to continue to decline due to the prohibition of going home due to an increase in hotel occupancy rates in Lebaran and school holidays which in previous years could increase by up to 10%. Unemployment in DIY rose 0.52% to 3.38 % from the previous 2.86%. The potential increase in unemployment nationally can occur between 4.25 million people to 9.35 million people. The positive impact of the existence of this homecoming ban makes people not reduce the substance of going home during Eid al-Fitr that is mutual forgiveness via online to practice adaptation. Abstract:
La Bamba…. Oh CAROL…. VOLARE…. The songs are still there but the singer is gone. Yes, during entertainment time in the local as well as in the ASEAN ENT Congresses, these songs reverberated as the leader of the band started rolling up the stage. There was so much energy, so much fun when Manny’s voice delivered the songs. These signature songs will remain in our memory as Manny finally sings the Swan Song. I have known Manny ever since I joined our fraternity in the UP College of Medicine. During the rites, he was fond of using a stick to hit the palmar soles…. and when hit hard … OMG…… it is very painful. That was one of the most dreaded stations of the ceremonial rites. When my turn came, he asked me if I have gone through his famous stick trick, I answered “NOT YET, PO”. For being honest I was just given a slight pat…. NAKALUSOT ako in short. Just after residency in 1988, Manny and I were both representing the Philippine delegation in Jakarta. During one of our free nights, we were joined by our great beloved mentor, Dr. Mariano Caparas. All night long till the wee hours of the morning, we stayed in Dr. Caparas’ hotel room. The discussion revolved just in one interesting topic and that was all about the nose. It was at that time that the term “the crazy NOSE” was coined. At 4 am, Dr. Caparas went to sleep happy. I went home crazy and Manny just can’t help but become nosy. Encounters like this became more often when I became more involved in the society. He was an upcoming President and I was an upcoming officer. Every time he visited Manila from Davao, he would usually call me and we go out to have dinner and then drink a bottle or two. We would talk on different topics starting with our dreams for the society, our activities in the future, about politics and about our research works. He was fond of telling me stories on innovative things he did in Davao most specially when confronted with difficult situations. His mind was a creative mind that aimed for basic rationality and utmost practicality. We were both involved deeply in the society when he was both President of the society and the President of the upcoming ASEAN ENT Congress in 1998. I was the President of the upcoming INTERTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM of INFECTION and ALLERGY of the NOSE (ISIAN) in 1999. For both of us it was an uphill challenging battle, an experience where we would gain friends as well as lose some. We carried crosses that were as big as you can imagine. We were able to survive the true test of mental and physical stress…. And that was because we both believe in perseverance…. perseverance and perseverance. Our bullheadedness was transformed to superior workmanship and leadership par excellence. Years passed by and history tells us that money matters in the ASEAN Congress in Davao got a little bit mystifying. The controversy turned a bit uncontrolled. One President after another, each tried their best to settle the issue once and for all but in vain. And finally, when my time came as President of the society in 2008, I was able to convince Manny to finally turn over the controversial pot of the decade. That became one of the top stories of the history of the society. The drama took place and the memory lingers on. Manny indeed made a mark in our history. The songs he sang, the words he spoke, the dreams he foretold and the drama he created…. these are some of many things Manny managed to make while on earth. May he rest in PEACE.

Abstract:
Congress and the president enacted the landmark Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) on December 22, 2017, the most sweeping change to the tax law since 1986. Tax laws such as this have a major impact on how business is conducted in the United States. This study does not attempt a comprehensive analysis of the changes in the U.S. tax code, but instead focuses on some key areas that affect most small and medium size business operators. Specifically this study examines how TCJA (2017) affects business operators in areas such as depreciation, net interest expenses, and entertainment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been continuously issuing facts sheets and statements in regards to the TCJA (2017). The first half of this study is a brief literature review on the landmark changes to the U.S. tax for corporations in regards to depreciation, net interest expenses, and entertainment. The second half of this study is a report of field observations and discussions with business operators such as a landlord of apartment complexes, a hotel operator, and a physical therapist. Though this study does not provide macro or archival data to explain how business operators responded to the TCJA (2017), field observations and discussions suggest that the three business operators are renovating in response to full depreciation write off, reducing net interest expenses, and limiting entertainment expenses.

Abstract:
Ten days after the President of Indonesia announced the first COVID-19 case, WHO declared that COVID-19 is a global pandemic. Since then, the virus has spread rapidly and caused numerous deaths and terrible economic impacts. According to UNWTO, tourism is one of the most effective sectors, due to worldwide restrictions on travel and closed borders. In Indonesia alone, the pandemic decreases around Rp 85 trillion of Indonesia’s tourism revenue by 2020. Based on many reports a lot of hotel and food businesses were shut down and many workers were impacted. In an attempt to recover the condition Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy implemented a program called CHSE certification to ensure tourists' safe travel. Floating Market Lembang is one of the certified CHSE destinations in Bandung. The subject of this study is the visitors of Floating Market Lembang, who visited the destination around December 2020 to June 2021. This study aimed to see the impact of CHSE certification in Floating Market Lembang on tourists’ visiting decisions. As destination attributes play a big role in tourists’ visiting decisions, this will be seen through tourist motivation, push and pull factors. Quantitative methods used to generate tourists’ opinions on the matter then will be analyzed using regression analysis. The result of this study shows that push factors alone have no influence on tourists’ motivation, pull factors, on the other hand, have an influence on tourist’s motivation. At the same time, both push and pull factors have an influence to visit Floating Marker Lembang under CHSE circumstances.
