Abstract:
Seated at tables of four, over four hundred women aged 55-95 years old unfold tablecloths of yellow, red, and black. With their choreographed and synchronized gesturing hands, they mimic traditional Euro-American quilt patterns. This performance, titled The Crystal Quilt, was produced by Los Angeles-based artist Suzanne Lacy in 1987 as the culminating work to the two-year long, statewide initiative Whisper Minnesota (1985-1987). There is a continued resonance of the quilt in Lacy’s oeuvre, as The Crystal Quilt was the third project to reference quilts and quilt making. The first project, Evalina and I: Crimes, Quilts, Art (1975-78), and a smaller commemorative project (1980), employed tactile quilting projects instead of the conceptual quilt arrangement that Lacy would incorporate in 1987. The formal and historical attributes of this textile practice have been largely ignored in contemporary scholarship on the artist, thus raising the question of how this very specific medium encouraged her artistic and activist agenda. The primary focus of this thesis is an exploration of how Lacy mediates these two approaches, one of feminism and the other inspired by conceptual artist Allan Kaprow, through the medium of the quilt. Neither Lacy’s quilt works nor the use of craft during the second wave feminist movement has been sufficiently analyzed within craft scholarship. The thesis thus centers on the historical labor of quilting, its pedagogical and political aspects, the cross generational connection of feminism since 1987, and finally, the impact it currently has on quilt scholarship.

Abstract:

Abstract:

We should reject presentism as the most intuitive theory of time. Prima facie, presentism might seem intuitive due to our perception of time. However, if presentism accurately represents the metaphysics of time, then presentism entails some counter-intuitive results regarding events, truths about the past, and temporary intrinsics. I argue that presentists can only allow for the present to be instantaneous, and then only at the cost of losing events as ontological entities. I argue that an ersatz B-series of times is viable only at the cost of losing the special metaphysical status of the present. Finally, I argue that the claim that propositions are true simpliciter is inconsistent with the claim that propositions are not eternally true. Given these problems, we can see that presentism has some strongly counter-intuitive entailments.

Ceron, Cristina. "Thomas Hardy: the poetry of memory: past and present, presence and absence." Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/277.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this work is, first of all, to analyse Hardy's poetry of memory both in its well-known overt expressions and in its more cryptic occurrences, in order to foreground the common devices which render it a more or less homogenous area. Moreover, it is necessary to distinguish the different poetic strategies adopted according to the different occasions, and the ensuing multiplicity of tones, registers and imagery. At last, a close analysis of a significant number of memorative poems can foreground the concentration of some clusters of images related to specific semantic fields, such as | light | and | darkness |, j detachment | and | loss |, | nostalgia | and | regret |. The work is divided into fou. main sections, with an additional introductory section. After a brief account of Hardy's complex route from a concealed to an official status of poet, and on the chronology of the eight poetic collections, the analysis concentrates on the relationship between the poet and the memorative faculty. Chapter I considers Hardy's early acknowledgement of the silent influence of the past on the present, especially in the light of his familiar background, his attachment to the archaic culture of Dorset and his critical approach to the philosophy of the age. The stress is laid on the aftermath of death, on the possibility of an imaginative or memorative permanence of what is dead in the perceptions of the living. Chapter II sets forth on the journey into the poetry of memory, with a special concentration on those texts which reveal meaningful instances of the construction of a poetics of memory. In these texts memory is not always a positive faculty which works like a bridge onto the past; on the contrary, it is often an intruder into the poetic conscience, a guest which becomes an agonistic host who forces the poetic T into negative epiphanies of memory. The formulaic question 'where were you' is substituted by the more dramatic 'where was F, and the feeling of blame often exceeds the joy of remembering. This negative aspect is carried further and amplified in chapter III, where an analysis of the poems for Emma lays bare the extreme many-sidedness of the poetics of memory. It is in this section that memory shows all its contradictory qualities; for instance, when it is prompted by a deep personal feeling, the work of memory amplifies its power to conjure ghostly wraiths of the primal object, but it also amplifies the wraiths' own faculty to affect the poetic conscience. At this stage, the poetics of memory evolves from an intrusion into the past with sporadic contacts with its inhabitants to a biunique relationship between speaker and addressee, a relationship which almost annihilates the chronotopic boundaries. The last chapter narrows on one specific aspect of the poetics of memory: elegiac poetry, which can be grouped into elegies for poets, elegies for relatives and friends, and war poems. Even though the elegiac pattern can be identified in all these poems, in fact the elegies for the poets appear much more formal and detached, both from a semantic and a rhetoric point of view. The elegies for friends, instead, make use of the conventions in order to represent the distance between the living and the dead, or to make the portray of the memorative object more vivid. The war poems represent a celebratory moment where the genuine expression of mourning is covered by the official nature of the poetic occasion. Hardy's poetry of memory is based on the interplay between the poetic T and a memorative addressee, expressed either in the second or third person. The marked use of different pronouns, metonymic and substitutive images as referents for the memorative object produces the haunting presence of many personae in and throughout the texts. By means of a rhetorical anàklisis, the poet clings to the object of his mourning in order to retain an illusory contact with it as long as possible. This selfprotective device gives rise to multiple imaginative projections of the mourned object, to their developing shapes and their dynamics along the texts. All these poetic creatures represent different and even contradictory offsprings of memory, a prodigious generative faculty which reminds us that the human mind is the primal creator of all that is in the universe, either in the present world or in the one to be, and that, without it, everything would cease to exist in the very moment of its demise.

Moody, Megan Felicity. "Eulachon past and present." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/676.

Abstract:
The eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus), a small anadromous smelt (Family Osmeridae) found only along the Northwest Pacific Coast, is poorly understood. Many spawning populations have suffered declines but as their historic status is relatively unknown and the fisheries poorly documented, it is difficult to study the contributing factors. This thesis provides a survey of eulachon fisheries throughout its geographical range and three analyses aimed at improving our understanding of past and present fisheries, coast-wide abundance status, and the factors which may be impacting these populations. An in-depth view of the Nuxalk Nation eulachon fishery on the Bella Coola River, Central Coast, BC, is provided. The majority of catches were used for making eulachon grease, a food item produced by First Nations by fermenting, then cooking the fish to release the grease. Catch statistics were kept yearly from 1945-1989 but have since, rarely been recorded. Using traditional and local ecological knowledge, catches were reconstructed based on estimated annual grease production. Run size trends were also created using local Fisheries Officers and Nuxalk interview comments. A fuzzy logic expert system was designed to estimate the relative abundance of fifteen eulachon systems. The expert system uses catch data to determine the exploitation status of a fishery and combines it with other data sources (e.g., CPUE) to estimate an abundance status index. The number of sources depended on the existing data and varied from one to eight. Using designed heuristic rules and by adjusting weighting parameters a final index was produced. Results suggest that there have been recent and extended declines in several eulachon rivers particularly the Klamath, California; Bella Coola, BC; Wannock, BC; and Kitimat, BC. Seven of the fifteen abundance time-series were used to evaluate the potential relationships between the declines and some of the factors that impact eulachon. Results suggest increases in shrimp and hake catches, seal and sea lion abundance, and sea surface temperatures were weakly associated with the declines. But contrary to expectations, adult hake biomass showed a positive association with four eulachon relative abundance time-series, suggesting that common environmental factors influenced both species.

Abstract:
Foucault (1996) argued that modern Western history was an invention of nineteenth century Europe and based on linearity, teleology and historicity. Hence the written history and culture of Aboriginal people in Australian has largely been seen through a similar principle as detailed in Chakrabarty’s (2007) ‘provincialising Europe,’ which is through master narratives. My dissertation addresses the question of who the Woppaburra of the Central Queensland region were culturally and historically. The pre-existing Western narrative tells a story of a submissive people studied, described and analysed with a strong colonial discursive approach. In contrast, I have used the ‘counter-narrative’ that Freeman (2004) considered to be the “culturally rooted aspects of one’s history” that are yet to be uncovered (p.298). The lens through which I viewed the counter narrative was through Indigenous research methodology considered part of Indigenous Standpoint Theory (IST). The history and culture of the Woppaburra have been exhumed through the data collected as described in Yins (2009) case study method. I have used Yin’s (2009) multiple data sources as evidence for this study. These data are Western documentation and archival records alongside the voices of Elders in interviews, direct observation at ‘on-country’ meetings and festivals, and physical artefacts which show a cultural representation of totems. A significant artefact is a length of plaited Woppaburra hair which is a biological remnant of the people under study. The Woppaburra believe it holds the memories of ancestors, story lines and healing properties. These data sources have shown that the Western text does not indicate personal stories of traditional practices, attachment to country and the centrality of totems to the Woppaburra. These data have been collectively analysed and findings presented through photographs, artwork and text. The findings from a plethora of documents demonstrate that in government archival records, public newspapers and anthropological photographs, the Woppaburra were used as items of interest, targets of punitive shooting parties, objects of slave labour and a people to be relocated at the whim of protectors. Interviews with Elders and limited anthropological papers give an alternate perspective of a people strongly connected to their natural homelands. The conclusions indicated that although the Woppaburra have been treated harshly, dispossessed of their homeland and denigrated culturally, they retained strong connections with their traditional homeland. In one sense they continue caring for their homeland through partnerships with local, state and national agencies set up by the surrounding culture but in a deeper sense, today they maintain their dreamings and cycle of life through stories and cultural traditions. The connection to country across time for the Woppaburra is that, traditionally and today, they see their world through totems, ancestors and intergenerational narratives.

This thesis investigates past and present understandings and applications of khul', synthesizing existing scholarship on the subject as well as H&dotbelow;anafi juristic doctrines. As khul' is part of a larger concept, namely, divorce initiated or approved by women, attention will also be given to the other options that Islamic law---or, on some points, cultural practices---grants women in order to obtain release from the marital bond. A comparative analysis between the application of marriage and divorce laws under the Ottomans and in contemporary Egypt will then be conducted with a view to shedding light on the effect that the rise of the nation-state has had on gender inequality.

19th Century Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard believed society alienates individuals from their true selves. Kierkegaard entitles this concept "despair." As such, despair deals not only with Kierkegaard's interpretation of the individual but also of the evolution of societies. While arguing that despair has existed throughout human history, this paper is an exploration of the ways in which modern or "Present Age" societies uniquely exacerbate despair according to Kierkegaard. This work begins with an in-depth look at Kierkegaard's interpretation of the individual and of the self and then addresses the difference between modern and pre-modern societies. Analysis of Kierkegaard's works concludes with a discussion of modern social institutions and their contributions to the problems of the present age

The Western Aeronautical Test Range (WATR) of NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) is facing a challenge in meeting the technology demands of future flight mission projects. Rapid growth in technology for aircraft has resulted in complexity often surpassing the capabilities of the current WATR real-time processing and display systems. These current legacy systems are based on an architecture that is over a decade old. In response, the WATR has initiated the development of the WATR Integrated Next Generation System (WINGS). The purpose of WINGS is to provide the capability to acquire data from a variety of sources and process that data for subsequent analysis and display to Project Users in the WATR Mission Control Centers (MCCs) in real-time, near real-time and subsequent post-mission analysis. WINGS system architecture will bridge the continuing gap between new research flight test requirements and capability by distributing current system architectures to provide incremental and iterative system upgrades.

Abstract:
2 000 caracteres maximum espaces compris. Maffesoli a j.
This work aims to situate, in a sociological and historical way, some questions linked to factors that constitute our occidental modernity. The archeological prospect used in this work aims to display a certain number of ideological links with the juxtaposition of the linear and the synchronic, of the historic and the contemporary, but also of the institutional and the ephemeral. It allows us to follow what foucault called "transformations" where as the language of modernity talk about logical stages of a progress which he defines as continuous, and about an historical causality in a way inevitable. To another level, we also examine the position of the contemporary sociological literature in relation to this language. A very special attention is raised about the different orientations claiming to belong to the postmodernism, from m. Maffesoli to j. F. Lyotard, and it is aloso raised about the approach of a socio-anthropological type, with some authors like g. Balandier or m. Auge. From the advanced art of the interwar period to hedonist practices of nowadays, we have tried to show the antagonism of the sovereign ego and the "body-machine", the one of the erratic pulse and the rationalization. We have also tried to give a concept, in their symbolic dimension as well as their technical dimension, the recombinings of the present time wich affect the sphere of the private and the public one, but also the field of the expressing of the real and the one of the fiction, the one of the information and the one of the entertainment. At last, through this analysis, we also examine the continuity of the reactionary thought, its most unexpected extensions

Abstract:
- Libraries are institutions of learning - They represent the cultural heritage and values of a society. Public libraries are often located at places of urban significance or, in the course of time help to establish the latter. They may be landmarks in the urban landscape and help to orient oneself. A public library serves the people, and its spirit should be truly public. A City and University Library in particular, is a highly frequented place where students and citizens meet. It can therefore easily become more than just a place for obtaining information. It can become a place for human interaction, offering spaces to enjoy a concert, to exhibit art or to go there to have lunch or dinner. In that sense, it could be transformed from an institution which is usually used during the day into a vital place which is also used in the evening and on the weekend. The following project pursues the notion of breaking with the traditional image of a public library, expanding its service and thus increasing its position as a place of public interest. This notion is a result of my thesis work, rather than the initial idea from which I started. The location of the project at the edge of the university campus in Frankfurt, Germany and the existence of a theater next to the existing library offered the possibility of establishing a cultural meeting place in one of Frankfurt's city districts.

Abstract:
Eugenics has been an ever present idea since the time of Darwin. While the practices and methods have changed over the years to represent a shift from public to private considerations, eugenics still persists. Advances in scientific technology have led to progressively more finely tuned eugenic techniques in the form of cellular and molecular eugenics. Accompanied with molecular eugenics, the transhumanist movement is pushing the human condition to new boundaries. The ethical dilemmas created by such practices are staggering and barely yet considered.

Abstract:
This study presented data gathered from Utah school counselors about demographic information, counseling and guidance programs in Utah, certification requirements, future personnel needs, quality and appropriateness of training programs, philosophy of public schools, and needs and/or concerns. A questionnaire was used to collect data from ~50 school counselors employed in the State of Utah. Utah school counselors were found to be primarily Caucasians over the age of 36 years. The majority of counselors in Utah were employed in secondary schools. Caseloads for secondary school counselors ranged from 300 to 600 students per counselor, and caseloads for elementary school counselors ranged from 900 to in excess of 1200 students per counselor. The critical shortage of counselors has justified the employment of noncertified counselors in the elementary schools. On a scale from excellent to poor the majority of school counselors described their school counselor preparation programs as adequate to good. Counselors would like to see the adoption of a comprehensive school counseling and guidance program with the complete support of administrators and school district personnel. Secondary and elementary school counselors were concerned with the community's perception of their duties as clerical and administrative. Young people and minorities should be encouraged to enter the school counseling field, filling the critical shortage need. School counselor preparation programs should be flexible enough to work with teachers and/or interested parties who currently work full time but would like to enter counselor training programs.

Abstract:
Book Summary: Hyperacusis and Disorders of Sound Intolerance: Clinical and Research Perspectives is a professional resource for audiology practitioners involved in the clinical management of patients who suffer from sound tolerance concerns. The text covers emerging assessment and intervention strategies associated with hyperacusis, disorders of pitch perception, and other unusual processing deficits of the auditory system. In order to illustrate the patients perspectives and experiences with disorders of auditory processing, cases are included throughout. This collection of diagnostic strategies and tools, evidence-based clinical research, and case reports provides practitioners with avenues for supporting patient management and coping. It combines new developments in the understanding of auditory mechanisms with the clinical tools developed to manage the effects such disorders exert in daily life. Topics addressed include unusual clinical findings and features that influence a patient s auditory processing such as their perceptual accuracy, recognition abilities, and satisfaction with the perception of sound. Hyperacusis is covered with respect to its effects, its relation to psychological disorders, and its management. Hyperacusis is often linked to trauma or closed head injury and the text also considers the management of patients with traumatic brain injury as an opportunity to illustrate the effectiveness of interprofessional care in such cases. Interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy, self-efficacy training, and hearing aid use are reported in a way that enhances clinicians' ability to weave such strategies into their own work, or into their referral system. Hyperacusis and Disorders of Sound Intolerance illuminates increasingly observed auditory-related disorders that challenge students, clinicians, physicians, and patients. The text elucidates and reinforces audiologists contributions to polytrauma and interprofessional care teams and provides clear definitions, delineation of mechanisms, and intervention options for auditory disorders.

Abstract:
The thesis first explored and evaluated some of the most used models that were developed to account for the effect of CO2 on evapotranspiration. This review depicts the complexity of the modeling procedure and underlines the advantages and shortcomings of each model. Then, the projected climate change in the near future (2021-2050) in different locations in Emilia-Romagna (Italy) was studied, with an emphasis on the opposite effect of an increase in both air temperature and CO2 levels on ETo. The case study used reanalysis data as a surrogate to historical weather stations measurements and an ensemble of regional climate models (RCMs) for the future projections. Results show that higher CO2 levels moderated the increase in ETo that accompanies an increase in air temperature, taking in consideration the change in other weather variables i.e. solar radiation, wind speed and dew point temperature. The outcomes of this study show that considering the CO2 fertilization effect when calculating reference evapotranspiration might give a more realistic estimation of water use efficiency and irrigation requirements in Emilia-Romagna and a better analysis of the future availability and distribution of water resources in the region. Finally, data from a model forecasting reference evapotranspiration (FRET) and the different variables involved in its calculation for the state of California (USA) were compared with similar data from the regional weather station network (CIMIS) to evaluate their accuracy and reliability. The evaluation was done in locations with different microclimates and included also sample irrigation schedules developed using FRET ETo. The obtained results demonstrate that FRET ETo forecasts are a viable alternative to traditional ETo measurements with some differences depending on the climatic condition of the location considered in this study. This implies that FRET could be replicated in other areas with similar climate settings.

II a.
In this research, we intend to describe various uses of the present participle in the comedies of Plautus (centuries. III-II. B.C.), under the view of some postulates of Functional Linguistics in its North American line. We propose an association between linguistic concepts explained in the texts of Latin authors and concepts of our theoretical support: the concepts of use, variation and change discussed by modern scholars were already present in the ancient manuals of rhetoric and grammar. We note that the participle was interpreted, according to ancient thought, as a word class distinct of the others, participating at the same time the nature of the verb and adjective. Even before the data analysis, we indicated several notes about the use of the present participle, guided by modern grammatical textbooks, in order to contrast the information with uses found in the comedy writer text. In a synchronic cut, we observe the participles always taking into account their context of use. We collect the samples in the 21 comedies, and based on them, we propose four functional standards: a) present participle with verbal function: b) present participle having individual functions; c) present participle with adjectival function; e) present participle with circumstantial function. Based on these patterns, we proved to our initial hypothesis that the participle has scalar levels of meaning, according to their appearance of context, and that such scalar levels range from the category of the verb for the category of adjective

This research work takes as its starting point for an artistic work of my authorship, where there was an appropriation of banal images of newspapers, books, magazines, which were partially erased, removed, to bring up new drawings and paintings later. This process is metaphorically compared to the two important terms used in a biology, dehiscence and another in medicine, prosopagnosia. Terms were related with others no less important for all practical process, such as intuition, breath and the present moment. Thus, we tried to, but now with words, to recreate the same conditions that have brought the images to receive them better and at the same time, promote the creation of new designs, new paintings, new images.

Many of the traditional normative grammars stablish a well-marked differentiation between Indicative and Subjunctive verbal modes. As the Indicative is considered the mode of certainty, the value of uncertainty, or hypothesis, is attributed to the Subjunctive. However, there are cases where this distinction doesn’t show itself as safe, as in factual clauses the Indicative is not always used, as well as the two modes, sometimes, can express lack of certainty (PERINI, 2009; 2010). In addition, CAMARA JR. (2009: 280-281) states that “in Portuguese, as in other Romanic languages, the subjunctive suffered the interference of the indicative and appears only in certain types of sentences, by a grammatical servitude”. It is used in very specific contexts, among which are: independent clause after the adverb of doubt perhaps; integral clause subordinated to verbs with volitional or optative signification; adverbial clause that develops a concession, a purpose or causality. In this work, from the perspective of variationist sociolinguistics, we investigated the variation between the present tense and the present subjunctive, in those syntactic contexts in which the grammatical prescription recognize to the compulsory use of the verbal mode subjunctive. Thus, we analyzed cases where, to a greater or lesser extent, the expected use of subjunctive is counteracted, creating statements of questionable acceptability under the scope of Portuguese prestigious variant. To the consecution that work, Sociolinguistic tests of perception and production are carried out with initial and final classes of primary education and the second cycle of secondary education in six schools – both the public and private types – in the cities of Niteroi and Itaborai and we analyzed textual productions of the students of those schools. We also consider the extra linguistic variables type of school, schooling and city and as linguistic variables, we considered syntactic context and grammatical person with statistical significance. We also contacted that the variable syntactic context can be described in a continuum which adverbial clauses of purpose had more signal subjunctive use, while at the opposite pole are located the adverbial clauses of causality. Finally, it is clear that the 1 st grammatical person motivates the use of the indicative, as well as students from 6th grade tend to use more often this way in the use of verbal contexts we studied

Abstract:

Vitalitat d'ús i documentació actual en textos escrits i en entrevistes orals. Etimologia.

We consider the lexical characteristics of the Catalan dialect known as "tortosí" and which can be described as a transitional dialect between Northwest Catalan and Valencian.

In addition to presenting en inventory of approximately 4,000 terms characteristic of this speech area (words exclusive to the dialect or which present a formal or semantic peculiarity in the dialect), the thesis studies 1,000 terms in depth, according to the following structure, which is proposed as B model for lexical entries: "Word", "Phonetic transcription" (when necessary), "Grammatical category", "Meaning", "Geographic area" where used (which allows us to see similarities between the dialect under study, for which we have data from field work, and other Catalan dialects, for which we have published references such as lexicographic sources or dialect monographs. We use (L)/(F)/(S) to see if the assigned area refers to the extension of the lexeme or to the formal or semantic variant. "Old documents", "Dictionaries": we record the appearance or absence of the word lists specific to the area or in dictionaries of Valencian or of Catalan in general, "Degree of use" and current frequency in documents and oral interviews. "Etymology"

To document words, we have based ourselves on published works as well as on unpublished materials, which we present with annotations in the second (written documents) and third (transcription of oral passages) volumes of this dissertation.

We also dedicate a chapter to analyzing the way the teaching of Catalan in schools is tending to homogenize the lexicon in this area end make it more similar to that of the standard language.

Another chapter discusses the attitudes between speakers of the Tortosa dialect and speakers from Barcelona.

In sum this dissertation presents dialect work in a traditional framework combined with elements of sociolinguistic and anthropological methodology.

Comparative analysis of the basic vocabulary of "Tortosí", Valencian, and Northwestern Catalan with respect to the inventory of basic vocabulary (1,500 words) of Central Catalan indicates a higher degree of similarity with Valencian, as opposed to Northwestern Catalan, although the traditional dialect divisions classify "Tortosí" as a subdialect of Northwestern Catalan and not Valencian.

We record the tremendous lexical variety of this dialect which, as is the case for most Catalan dialects is in danger of disappearing because speakers autoctonous words with loans from Spanish, or from the standard dialect.

Abstract:
The use of the present progressive to express future is a grammatical construction imported into Portuguese from English. In this construction here called Future Present Progressive (FPP), the verbal predicate expresses the present tense, while a temporal adverb locates the event in the future. The assimilation of this construction to Brazilian Portuguese (BP) enriches the language’s inventory of periphrastic expressions of the future tense. This work studied the internal structure of FPP constructions in BP and the relationship between its components. Lexical and grammatical aspects were considered to investigate why utterances such as: ‘Estamos nos mudando em duas semanas’  (We are moving in two years) are grammatical, while utterances as: ‘*Estou morando no Candá ano que vem’  (*I am living in Canada next year) are not, although both expressions are grammatical in the present progressive in BP. The research was conducting with naturally occurring language, collected from the Twitter microblogging service, using a methodology, which one might call digital linguistics. The data was treated using the resources of the multi-lingual database TypeCraft, and is freely available at: http://typecraft.org/TCEditor/1730/. Our analysis of FPPs focuses on the relationship between lexical and grammatical aspect and suggests an extension of the semantic features that define different aspects. It furthermore highlights the role that the stage-level predicate ‘estar’ plays in deriving the semantics of this construction. Our research suggests that, besides the combination between lexical and grammatical aspect, different semantic mechanisms can also influence the compatibility pattern of verbs and syntactic constructions. Our research also shows that the FPP, although a borrowing from English, has morphosyntactic and semantic properties that makes it an integral part of the BP grammar.

Cheung, Kwan-hin. "The phonology of present-day Cantonese." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1986. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317605/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the phonology of present-day Cantonese. In addition to tone, onset and rime, the thesis also covers realization, variation, casual speech and intonation. A separate chapter considers the syllable as a whole. With sympathetic understanding, the thesis reviews previous work on the subject. In doing so, it tries to provide principled answers to the questions how and why Cantonese phonologies differ. In its own treatment of the subject, it benefits from indigenous Chinese phonology, classical phonemics, Firthian prosodic phonology, SPE phonology, and autosegmental phonology, as well as European structuralism, while dismissing the time-honoured principle of unilinear phoneme-size segmentation as inappropriate for Cantonese. The mora is introduced into the organization of Cantonese sounds. The descriptive device of autosegmental phonology enables us to consider morae as "autosegments", thereby capturing a number of regularities which are otherwise difficult to characterize elegantly. Another innovation in the thesis is the idea of "coercion", a process whereby uncanonical phonetic forms, which arise as the output of casual speech processes, are replaced by canonical forms. The mora, coercion, and autosegmental representations together account for a good deal of lower-level regularities, especially in casual, connected speech. They also contribute to understanding the discrepancies among different phonologies of Cantonese. By enabling a dynamic and holistic view of the organization of Cantonese sounds, they cast light on the static and fragmentary nature of many prevailing views on the subject.

Abstract:
"The process of securing data has always been a challenge since it is related to the safety of people and society. Nowadays, there are many cryptographic algorithms developed to solve security problems. However, some applications have constraints which make it difficult to achieve high levels of security. Light weight cryptography aims to address this issue while trying to maintain low costs. Side-channel attacks have changed the way of cryptography significantly. In this kind of attacks, the attacker has physical access to the crypto-system and can extract the sensitive data by monitoring and measuring the side-channels such as power consumption, electromagnetic emanation, timing information, sound, etc. These attacks are based on the relationship between side-channels and secret data. Therefore, there need to be countermeasures to eliminate or reduce side channel leaks or to break the relationship between side-channels and secret data to protect the crypto systems against side-channel attacks. In this work, we explore the practicality of Threshold Implementation (TI) with only two shares for a smaller design that needs less randomness but is still leakage resistant. We demonstrate the first two-share Threshold Implementations of light-weight block cipher Present. Based on implementation results, two-share TI has a lower area overhead and better throughput when compared with a first-order resistant three-share scheme. Leakage analysis of the developed implementations reveals that two-share TI can retain perfect first-order resistance. However, the analysis also exposes a strong second-order leakage. "

Cobalt has become more and more popular in the realms of academia, industry, and media due to its integral role in many of the most commonly-used lithium-ion battery cathodes today. Many issues have been evaluated regarding the controversial labor and volatile sociopolitical environments associated with cobalt mining and concerns over the ability of cobalt supply to continue to meet demand, especially the increasing demand due to the electric vehicle revolution. Cobalt is a critical element in a variety of products outside of the battery industry, including: superalloys, hard-facing metals, cutting tools, magnets, chemical catalysts, and pigments. In this thesis, I assessed the criticality of cobalt demand in non-battery sectors with the intention of assessing whether demand of cobalt in its traditional, inelastic sectors will supply be a limiting factor of technological progress by 2030 and by 2050. In order to do so, data was collected on the past and present demands of cobalt in its four primary sectors, outside of batteries: superalloys, cutting tools and hard-facing metals, magnets, and chemical catalysts. Future demand projections were made based on the historic data as well as via a bottom-up approach from industry projections for future product demand and cobalt intensity of products. Substitutes for cobalt in these applications were also investigated and are discussed below. The prices at which substitutes become more favorable than cobalt were also evaluated.

Abstract:
In 2016 it is 70 years since the first patent for a two-stage servovalve was filed, and 60 years since the double nozzle-flapper two-stage valve patent was granted. This paper reviews the many alternative servovalve designs that were investigated at that time, focusing on two-stage valves. The development of single-stage valves – otherwise known as direct drive or proportional valves – for industrial rather than aerospace application is also briefly reviewed. Ongoing research into alternative valve technology is then discussed, particularly focussing on piezoelectric actuation and the opportunities afforded by additive manufacturing.

Abstract:
The creative nonfiction essays and poetry in this collection explore family survival during the hardest of times--when the desire to give up is at its greatest--as told from the perspective of a woman who is a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. These are not stories of defeat. Nor are they merely explorations of death and dying. They are cleebrations of living, of surviving, of loving and being loved against all odds.

Abstract:

This article presents a panoramic and critical overview of isiXhosa lexicography and its impact on the intellectualisation of this indigenous South African language. The history of isi¬Xhosa lexicography dates back more than two centuries. However, there still exists a need for dic¬tionaries that serve the language-speaking community as practical tools for addressing diverse communication and learning-oriented needs in the current language policy dispensation. The Isi¬Xhosa National Lexicography Unit (XNLU) is currently working on dictionary projects that attempt to address this situation while at the same time not losing sight of the mandate that the Pan South African National Language Board (PanSALB) placed on all the National Lexicography Units (NLUs). For this to happen, the article argues that the NLU needs to put lexicographic prac¬tice into its historical perspective, i.e. conceiving dictionary projects in the light of existing diction¬aries and lexicographic traditions in the language. Over and above that, there is a need to take into account the recent developments in lexicographic research, adopt co-operative lexicographic prac¬tice and develop a dictionary culture among the isiXhosa-speaking community.

Abstract:
The term "nanotechnology" has evolved over the years via terminology drift to mean "anything smaller than microtechnology," such as nano powders, and other things that are nanoscale in size, but not referring to mechanisms that have been purposefully built from nanoscale components. Nanotubes, in particular, prove to be useful as molecular components for nanotechnology. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) discovered in 1991 by Sumio Iijima resemble rolled up graphite, although they cannot really be made that way.
