Wilson, Robin, and Amirouche Moktefi, eds. The Mathematical World of Charles L. Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198817000.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is best known for his ‘Alice’ books, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, written under his pen-name of Lewis Carroll. He is also remembered as a pioneer of Victorian photography. But his everyday job was a lecturer in Mathematics at Christ Church, Oxford University. What mathematics did he do? How good a mathematician was he? And how influential was his work, both at the time and since? This book investigates these questions by outlining his mathematical life, describing in an accessible way his writings in geometry, algebra, logic, the theory of voting, and recreational mathematics, and discussing his mathematical legacy. There is also a full mathematical bibliography of Dodgson’s mathematical publications. This is the first academic work that collects the research on Dodgson’s wide-ranging mathematical achievements into a single accessible volume, and is written by acknowledged world experts on these activities. Much material is collected here for the first time, including the results of recent research. It has been carefully edited and is presented in an introductory and accessible form with many illustrations, both explanatory and historical. Expected to become the standard work on the subject, it should be of great interest to anyone interested in Lewis Carroll, Oxford, Victorian Britain, or mathematics.

McKay, David O. Pacific Apostle. University of Illinois Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5622/illinois/9780252042850.001.0001.

Abstract:
The year-long fact-finding mission of Mormon apostle David O. McKay and his traveling companion Hugh J. Cannon to the colonies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was one of the most significant moments of the twentieth century for Mormonism. Although the contemporary church has grown to become a global presence, the early decades of the last century found missionaries struggling to gain converts abroad. For the church’s leadership, it was a pioneering endeavor to visit, observe, and fellowship with the church’s expanding global constituency in the Pacific. Other general authorities had visited individual church missions at various times—especially across Europe. None, however, had ever circumnavigated the globe, using the Pacific as a focal point of travel. In today’s information age, where such visits occur almost weekly for many senior church leaders, the significance of such an expedition is easy to overlook. When McKay was called in October 1920, no one knew the tour would eventually form many of the most important initiatives he had undertaken when he became church president three decades later. McKay’s rich and vivid account of his and Cannon’s 61,646-mile around-the-world journey illustrates the roots of Mormonism’s globalization. His diary account is without doubt one of the more significant texts in the historical cannon of global Mormon studies.

Silva, Bráulio Lobo da. A Dimensão Eclesiológica do Batismo na Lumen Gentium. Brazil Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31012/978-65-5861-357-2.

Abstract:
The present work aims to present the ecclesiological dimension of baptism in Lumen Gentium, in view of an ecclesiology of communion. God in his magnificence creates all things in view of the salvation of the cosmos. To make this, he relies on the contribution of human action. From human freedom God wants to save by making them the sign and sacrament of salvation for other humans. Hence, he has constituted a people to be the light and presence of God inside of humanity. This same people constituted, as God's property, had been prepared to receive Jesus Christ to fulfill salvation, generating from within themselves the new people of God who is the Church. Thus, baptism constitutes the human being as a new creature regenerated in Christ, forming the new people of God, making him a child of God and a member of the Church. As the mission of God continues in the Church and in every baptized person, all the people of God have the privilege of helping in salvation. In this way, every baptized person has his radical equality in virtue of the dignity of baptism, where all are missionary disciples. Thus, as a people of God, the laity is an ecclesial subject and a missionary disciple because he is a baptized, participant in the divinity of Jesus Christ and the director of the kingdom and salvation of God in the world.
