Abstract:
This research uses a mixed methods approach to explore the both the preparation for and perceptions of graduate consultant writing center work. A review of literature shows a gap in both the knowledge surrounding graduate writing consultant education and the long-term outcomes or transfer of writing center training and work to post-graduate careers. The survey instruments in this study draw from two established studies, the Peer Writing Tutor Alumni Research Project and the National Census of Writing, while a request for curricular artifacts draws on case study research conducted by Jackson et al. Findings indicate that graduate consultants are being prepared for their work in writing centers, but that directors are not intentionally including discussions of how that work may transfer into academic careers, particularly those in writing center leadership. Despite this, current and alumni graduate consults report both immediate and long-term transfer of writing center experiences, skills, and knowledge into their occupations. The transfer of learning is perceived as being most profound for those who have remained in the academy as either professors or administrators. This research has implications for graduate students, directors, and institutions, and I conclude with an analysis of how directors can be more intentional in their work with graduate consultants in order to better prepare a new generation of writing center administrators who are aware of the academic, political, and scholarly opportunities that are possible through writing center careers.

Abstract:
Sexual minorities (SM) are at a greater risk for experiencing a serious mental illness (SMI) compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Furthermore, SM with a SMI continue to experience stigma and discrimination that leads to more negative outcomes and a greater need for counseling services. Current researchers have not adequately addressed the specific needs of SM with a SMI and how to prepare counselors to work with this population. Furthermore, most SM with a SMI find that counseling services are inadequate and do not meet their unique needs. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study, grounded in a Husserlian philosophical and Minority Stress Model conceptual framework, was to explore the experiences and perceptions of counselors who provide counseling services to SM with a SMI. Data was collected from six participants using a semistructured interview and followed a thematic data analysis process, ensuring thematic saturation. The results of this study highlighted many themes regarding the unique needs of SM with a SMI, such as their multiple minority stressors, negative counseling experiences, and the impact of family, as well as counselor's perception regarding the lack of preparation in graduate school to work with SM with a SMI. Study findings may improve counselors' understanding of the needs of SM with a SMI so they may provide more effective counseling services. Also, this study highlights the importance of training counselors to work with this population and may bolster the efforts of counselor educators.

Abstract:
The discovery of unique properties of graphene has led to the development of graphene for a variety of applications like integrated circuits, organic electronic devices, supercapacitors, sensors, and composite materials. Fluorination of graphene enables control of its physical, chemical, and electronic properties. Our initial studies demonstrated the viability of sulfur hexafluoride plasmas to fluorinate epitaxial graphene as a safer alternative to the commonly reported techniques of fluorination that include exposures to fluorine and xenon difluoride gas. Formation of carbon-fluorine bonds after SF6 plasma-treatment was confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction studies suggest that the framework of sp2-hybridized carbon atoms remains intact after the plasma-treatment. Increase in work function after the fluorination was determined by ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy. The findings of our subsequent investigation to controllably modify the work function of epitaxial graphene via plasma-fluorination indicate that the work function of fluorinated epitaxial graphene is controlled by the polarity of carbon-fluorine bonds. Further studies to investigate the effect of the surface topography of epitaxial graphene on the work function of plasma-fluorinated epitaxial graphene were performed using scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM). The results of SKPM characterization of plasma-fluorinated epitaxial graphene demonstrated that the increase in the work function of epitaxial graphene after plasma-treatment is independent of its surface topography, but non-uniform fluorination may result from non-uniformities in plasma density.

Abstract:
This study describes and compares the results of a survey of 53 masters of social work students to determine the nature and extent to which their educational preparation included instruction on acquired immune deficiency syndrome and sexually transmitted diseases. The study also assessed the social work students' attitudes toward people with HIV/AIDS and STDs, as well as their attitudes toward the role of social work education and the profession in addressing the HIV/AIDS and STD epidemics. To obtain this purpose the investigator developed a 56-item questionnaire. One of five hypotheses generated was accepted. Results showed that social work students need to increase their exposure to HIV/AIDS and STD related issues.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how students are prepared for work in schools in the context of post-communism in Russia. It aims to gain an understanding of what theories and processes constitute preparation for work in Russian schools. In the light of how they have changed as a result of the fall of communism in 1991, the thesis seeks to explore the ways in which students are prepared to enter the world of work. The socio-cultural and activity theory is employed to explore the relationship between students’ engagement in pedagogic practices and macro historical transformations in Russia that have affected it.
The methodology includes a documentary analysis of teacher-training textbooks, which were used in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and a case study of preparation for work in a secondary school in Perm, Russia, which involved a group of thirty teachers and thirty students. Biographical interviews were conducted with thirty individuals who lived through the economic and social transformations caused by the events of 1991.
The analysis of the data demonstrates that preparation for work in Russian schools is a combination of two pedagogic processes – vospitanie, which refers to the overall up-bringing of children, and ‘professional orientation’, which provides career guidance. The literature review and documentary analysis have revealed that the events of 1991 have influenced the ideological underpinning of vospitanie and professional orientation, especially in terms of humanisation of pedagogic processes. However, with regard to the conceptual framework, vospitanie and professional orientation have remained relatively intact. These pedagogic concepts emphasise a dialogic relationship between students and teachers. The case study analysis shows that the teachers’ conceptualisation of vospitanie and professional orientation reflect the findings from the documentary analysis, but the teachers have interpreted the theory in the ways that reflect their various, historically formed views of preparation for work. Some of these views, expressed by the teachers who were trained in the Soviet time, do not support the new humanistic approach advocated in the literature; instead, the focus is on differentiation by ability and on academic achievement. Combined with the fact that the case study school does not offer practical vocational experience, this provides some explanation of why only those students who receive support from outside the school are better prepared than others to overcome the challenges of the new market economy. Those students who do not receive relevant support outside the school are developing dispositions towards employment, which are less likely to help them progress in the context of the market economy.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Physical therapists (PTs) may care for full-term or premature newborns in all levels of hospital nurseries. There is some endorsement in the published physical therapy literature for restricting practice in the nursery setting to only those PTs with specialized training.1-4 PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of becoming and being a physical therapist in a special care nursery (SCN) or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) from the therapists’ perspective. METHODS: The participants were physical therapists who have practiced in a SCN or NICU in the United States. A phenomenological approach was used and data was collected through interviews. The constant comparative method was used to analyze the data and identify common themes to describe therapists’ beliefs about becoming and being a physical therapist in a hospital nursery. RESULTS: These four themes include: 1) Never Alone, which reflects the unique collaborative culture of the NICU; 2) Families First, which speaks to the need to focus on the family, avoid judgment, and facilitate their involvement in the care of their child; 3) Take a Deep Breath, which reflects the need to be mindful and cautious because of the potential to do harm due to the extreme fragility of the infant; and 4) Know What You Don’t Know, which reflects the depth and breadth of knowledge necessary to work in the NICU/SCN. CONCLUSIONS: This project was the first to systematically research practicing therapist’s beliefs and perspectives regarding PT practice in the SCN and NICU. It is evident that current practice does not align with the adopted statements from APTA and APPT, as well as other professional associations. Much evidence draws attention to the fragility of premature neonates, yet our PT practice and education does not appropriately address these concerns.

In doing so, the issue was examined in detail in a teacher education institution located in Fiji, namely, Lautoka Teachers College (LTC). An integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed to explore if beginning teachers from the College are provided with appropriate professional preparation as future teachers. Using LTC as a case study, basic data gathering methods utilized questionnaire surveys, interviews and documentary analyses. Survey-based data were gathered from the beginning teachers to find out their perceptions of the pre-service program that they had completed. Data were also gathered from their Head Teachers to ascertain views on the beginning teachers' professional preparation for the demands of work in their schools. In addition, an interview-based approach explored the perceptions of not only the College staff but also the Ministry of Education officials with regard to the preparation of teachers in meeting the demands of work and responsibilities in the field. Documentary-based research was also used to explore matters associated with teacher preparation at LTC and to integrate the findings with the data obtained in the surveys and interviews. The study indicated that the beginning teachers were not adequately prepared for the demands of work and responsibilities expected of them as perceived by the profession and other stakeholders. A number of factors were found to be contributing to the perceived inadequacy of the professional preparation of beginning teachers. Lack of physical facilities and quality of educational resources together with an outdated curriculum contributed to this situation. At the same time, lack of support from the principal stakeholder in terms of staff professional development and funding was also cited as impacting upon the quality of pre-service teacher education provided to the beginning teachers. An important emergent issue emanating from the study relates to colonial influence on Fiji's education in general, and teacher education at LTC in particular. Some of the problems LTC grappled with were attributable to certain features of the formalised educational system introduced during the colonial era. These aspects, such as the inheritance of the system of educational administration and centralised control, constrained the College in attempting to fulfil its professional role in an appropriate and responsive manner. The administrative system and related context, delivery and assessment elements established in education during the colonial period have been retained and not attuned to contemporary Fiji needs despite the changing times. In overview terms, the presence of these aspects appeared to have impacted negatively on College's effective conduct of its professional role and responsibilities. Further, this study provides specific insights into the pre-service primary teacher education in Fiji, in particular the importance of having relevant policies and programs to ensure the provision of an adequate and enriching professional preparation for teachers to meet the range of work commitments in the field. The study concluded that a number of factors influence the professional preparation of future teachers and these need to be considered with a view to ensuring that teachers are able to meet the demands of their profession. Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of former beginning agriscience teachers and to explore the relationships between these perceptions, the characteristics of former beginning agriscience teachers, work satisfaction, work-life balance, and their reasons for leaving the profession. Information was gathered from former secondary agriscience teachers across Texas who left the profession during the 2001-2 through 2005-6 academic years. A survey instrument was created specifically for this study through which information about perceived work satisfaction, work-life balance, effect of work-life on attrition, and demographic characteristics of the former beginning agriscience teachers was gathered. Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics. For this population, work satisfaction, work-life balance, and teacher attrition were not found to differentiate among demographic and career characteristics: age, gender, ethnicity, employment, salary, teacher training institution, years of experience, agriscience department size, hours on the job, or FFA area association. The results suggested evidence of an inverse relationship between work satisfaction and beginning agriscience teacher attrition as well as an inverse relationship between work-life balance and agriscience teacher attrition. Nearly half of all respondents reported the wanting of balance between professional work and personal life as their chief reason for leaving the profession. Closely following this reason were the placement of students in agriscience classes who did not choose to be in the elective courses and too much time away from family. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents offered the recommendation to set a maximum student enrollment per class period and to decrease the number of class preparations/course sections taught by beginning teachers. Over half of the respondents made the recommendation to share the load of shows and contests equally among teachers and to increase the number of teachers in the agriscience department. To improve the preparation and retention of agriscience teachers, two-thirds of the respondents recommended a salary increase. The recommendation following salary and given by nearly half of respondents was to provide mentor teachers. And, one-third of respondents offered the recommendation for more follow-ups from university teacher trainers.

Abstract:

This exploratory mixed method convergent parallel study examined Connecticut Educational leadership preparation programs for the existence of mental health content to learn the extent to which pre-service school leaders are prepared for addressing student mental health. Interviews were conducted with school mental health experts and Connecticut school principals to learn what leadership competencies they believe are needed for pre-service school leaders to address the mental health conditions of students. Responses yielded 11 suggested leadership competency content categories which served as the basis of two researcher-developed surveys completed by Connecticut program course professors and pre-service school leader students rating the extent to which mental health content was included in course work and field experience. Program course syllabi were examined for mental health content. Findings from the three data sources suggest there is a dearth of mental health content in curricula, and insufficient attention to clinical internship experiences. Connecticut Educational leadership preparation programs could do better in preparing pre-service school leaders for addressing the mental health needs of students.

This study examines the perceived preparation and self-efficacy among offenders in the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation who are incarcerated at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Montgomery County, Maryland and are participants of the reentry program. Eighty-nine (89) participants were selected for the probability sampling. The 89 survey participants were sentenced inmates who were within the last 90 to 120 days of incarceration. The respondents were males and females over the age of 18. Findings of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant relationship between perceived preparation and successful release of the offenders in the reentry program.

A study made by Johansson, Fast-Berglund and Moestam (in press) shows that diversity regarding how information is used exists in global production networks. To be closer to markets, organizations have chosen to globalize their business which is one reason for why diversity arises. This because product types and brands historically have been different. One company that is currently working with improving consistency among processes is Volvo Group Trucks Operations (GTO). The company wants to evaluate how the process for preparing assembly work instructions looks like at different sites within their production network. This enables Volvo GTO to start their work towards a standardized process and uniformity. A starting point for this is to make a current state analysis of the process for preparing assembly work instructions when producing Volvo trucks, engines and transmissions in Sweden. The purpose is to identify key activities within the process and important factors to consider when standardizing the process. This is done on three sites, one for each area. Volvo GTO is the part of the Volvo Group that covers all production of engines and transmissions as well as the production of Volvo, Renault, Mack, and UD trucks. In 2012 the group choose to reorganize from brand based where each brand was an own organization to joint units, for example center of development, operations etc. This has led to a greater need of one common process for preparing assembly work instructions in order to create uniformity among the brands Volvo, Renault, Mack, and UD trucks. The result of the current state analysis shows that the process for preparing assembly work instructions is differently performed depending on the site studied. Despite this, some activities in each process are similar. These were found to be: design, review, time setting, time analysis, balancing, station marking, create assembly work instructions, and share information. Since some activities actually are similar, it would be possible to standardize the process for preparing assembly work instructions in the future. Important to consider when standardizing a process is to create awareness and involvement among employees. It is also important to have the management committed as well as uniformity among IT systems used when performing a process. One last thing to consider is that the process needs to be adaptable because sites are located all over the world and have different culture and regulations.

Viktigt att tänka på när man standardisera en process är att skapa medvetenhet och engagemang bland medarbetarna. Det är också viktigt att ha ledningens engagement och stöd samt enhetlighet mellan IT system som används för att utföra processen. En sista sak att tänka på är att processen måste kunna anpassas då siter är placerade över hela världen och har olika kultur och lagar.

The aim of this study is to analyse the importance of social factors and so­cial relations around food preparation. Methods used: a questionnaire, a food diary kept by the person(s) respon­sible for food preparation in the family and a number of interviews. 348 families from the counties of Uppsala and Umeå with at least one child un­der 18 years of age filled in the formulas. The kitchen is a working-place where women dominate as workers. Class has a considerable effect on patterns of meals, on methods used for food preparation and on the choice of food and dishes. The division of la­bour is auso effected, members of the family are more involved in the pro­cess of food preparation when the mother is a higher non-manual employee or self-employed. Distinctions revealed when reading the diaries with Bourdieu's con­ceptions in mind were of three kinds. One dimension is geografical, an other dimension is that of age. The third dimension is class. Upper-class families distinguished themselves by using more extras and more elaborate ways of labelling the gravy, the vegetables, the dishes themselves. They also had more alcohol with the dinner. Still another dimension is the gen­der power system. The results from the interviews revealed two patterns. One is that women express in various ways that there are conflicting goals involved, hard to cope with satisfactorily. The other is that there is a great variety of ways the couples deal with the gender system - men's open or hidden domination and women's open or hidden subordination.

For a variety of reasons, college students with disabilities encounter stressors beyond those of students who do not have disabilities. One of the more salient examples is that students with disabilities are required to disclose that they have a disability and to communicate with faculty and staff in order to receive academic accommodations, as afforded to them under sub-part E of Section 504 of the Education and Rehabilitation Act of 1974. Therefore, postsecondary institutions are required to make appropriate accommodations available to students with disabilities, but they are not required to proactively seek them out. The purpose of this study was to learn about the needs that students with physical disabilities have concerning their successful transition into professional careers. This was accomplished by analyzing how five current senior students with disabilities reflected on their experiences, particularly in terms of using work preparation programs and/or accommodations necessary for them to participate in employment recruitment activities provided by the university’s career services office. The intent of those services was to transition disabled students from the university environment into the workforce. The findings showed that the students perceived they did not receive a lot of information regarding the services available, and they also expressed that the university should have done more in transitioning them into their professional life. The basic premise is that higher education professionals, key support staff, and administrators who provide work preparation programs, career, transition and accommodation services to disabled students are in a position to help remove informational barriers, facilitate the use of services and accommodations, and to actively encourage students with disabilities to enter the workforce upon graduation. The results of this study may inspire university personnel to find creative ways to get students involved and motivated to seek services available to them, to be best self-advocates to students needing their services, and to understand the transition challenges that exist between academic life and entry into the workforce. By being more aware and sensitive about the needs of students with disabilities, the professionals who work with them might be better positioned to help them experience a successful and more supported transition into a competitive employment and independent life after college.

This study examined the attitude, academic preparation, and practice competence of social workers in relation to substance use disorder in the state of Georgia. Three hundred and one (301) survey participants responded to the study for which they were selected, utilizing non probability convenience sampling. The survey participants were composed of bachelor-, master-, and doctoral-level students and professionals who currently live in the state of Georgia. The survey questionnaire titled A Study of Social Workers in Relation to Substance Use Disorders consisted of 35 closed-ended questions. The findings of the study indicated that although there was a statistically significant difference in the attitude of BSW, MSW, and DSW/PhD social workers overall, there was no statistically significant difference found with regard to academic preparation or practice competence.

Det innebär att genomtänkt planering blir en allt viktigare faktor för att kunna minska kostnader för slöseri samt uppnå en effektiv produktion och god kvalitet. Ett hjälpmedel för att uppfylla detta är verktyget arbetsberedning. Arbetsberedning är ett begrepp som genom planering underlättar genomförandet av en aktivitet. För att uppnå önskat resultat och kvalitet ska val av utförandemetod, arbetskraft, material, maskiner och hjälpmedel fastställas i god tid innan arbetsmomentet påbörjas. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att göra en nulägesanalys av hur Peabs arbetsberedningar fungerar i produktionen. Att kartlägga eventuella fel eller brister samt att undersöka möjligheten till effektivisering. Målet är att effektivisera arbetsberedningen och presentera förbättringar. Studien har genomförts på Peab region mellersta och aktuella byggprojekt i Karlstad under våren 2017. Den omfattar en fallstudie på Talldungen förskola samt en intervjustudie där platschefer, arbetsledare och yrkesarbetare har intervjuats. Resultatet visar att Peab har ett strukturerat arbetssätt gällande arbetsberedningar och att medarbetare anser att verktyget är ett bra hjälpmedel. Med hjälp av arbetsberedning klargörs krav och eventuella frågetecken kan redas ut innan aktivitetsstart. Vid beredningen deltar yrkesarbetarna aktivt och kan påverka val av arbetsmetod, maskiner och verktyg. Detta resulterar i en positiv inställning och upplevs även ge bättre sammanhållning mellan yrkesgrupperna. Ett återkommande problem är att arbetsberedning inte prioriteras tidsmässigt vilket gör att uppföljningen efter genomförd aktivitet blir bristfällig och saknar ofta dokumentation. Utifrån de slutsatser som tagits från analysen rekommenderas utbildning, erfarenhetsbank samt ritning- och anvisningsstation som åtgärder. Peab bör även bli bättre på att informera sina medarbetare om vilka verktyg som finns tillgängliga samt satsa på att utveckla BIM-användandet.
Studies show that good planning reduces operating coasts and costs for change and additional work. It means that thoughtful planning becomes a more important factor in reducing waste costs and achieving efficient production and good quality. A tool to achieve this is work preparation. Work preparation is a concept that, through planning, facilitates the performance of an activity. To achieve the desired result and quality, the choice of the performance method, workforce, materials, machines and other tools must be decided in good time before the work begins. The purpose of this graduate project is to make a status analysis of how Peab's work preparations are used in production. Identify errors or deficiencies and to investigate the possibility of streamlining. The objective is to get the work preparation more efficient and to suggest improvements. The study has been made in cooperation with Peab Region middle and the current building projects in Karlstad in spring 2017. It comprises a case study (on/at Talldungen preschool) and an interview study where site managers, supervisors and construction workers have been interviewed. The result shows that Peab has a structured work preparation and that the employees find the toolset useful. Working preparation clarifies requirements and any questions can be resolved before the start of the activity. During the preparation, the construction workers actively participate and can influence the choice of working methods, machines and tools. This results in a positive attitude and is perceived to provide better teamwork. One reoccurring problem is that time for work preparation is not prioritized, which means that the follow-up after a completed activity becomes insufficient and the documentation is often missing. Based on the conclusions drawn from the analysis, education, a bank of experience and also a drawing and instructional station are recommended as arrangements. Peab should be better at informing the employees about the available tools and should also be investing in developing the use of BIM.

Currently, there is a monthly breach with its vehicle delivery policy. This policy refers to said company, it refers to a minimum of 92% of units towards the points of sale. However, in the last quarter of 2017 and the semester of 2018, it has only been met from 82% to 90%. These are 5% -10% that have not come to meet in each month, but also directly to the profitability of the company. On the one hand, storage costs are increased by each car that does not arrive or dissatisfaction is generated by the customer, this is the problem of 3 main causes, which is the installation time of radios, installation of alarms and more vehicles that are not served in the damage assessment area. As a root cause, we have the first, since, on the one hand, a bottleneck is generated by the lack of car attention and, on the other hand, represents 20% of the monthly sales of the case study, For what needs to be done to reduce this bottleneck and increase the capacity of the vehicles in this area, the damage is detailed, two lines of evaluation are carried out. This type of triage, we ensure a standardized work, since there was a group of vehicles waiting with different types of damage in the same operating line. Also, the delivery of vehicles on time is improved to 95% and the times of the areas of installation of radios, installation of alarms and damage assessment are reduced by 42.85%, 51.42% and 50% respectively.

In 2019, 851,508 persons were apprehended at the Southwestern US border without lawful immigration status in the US; of whom 473,682 were part of a family unit, and 76,020 were classified as unaccompanied children (UC). UC are those entering the US under the age of 18 without a parent/legal guardian available to care for them. Recent research on unaccompanied children in the US has focused on educational outcomes, trauma, family separation at the border, and resiliency. However, more research is needed around this population given their unique vulnerabilities, the current unreceptive political climate in the US, and the fact that 2019 has had the highest arrival numbers yet. This dissertation draws on administrative data to provide information that can improve the services that social service agencies are delivering, to highlight areas of future research, and to recommend specific tools for data collection. I aim to advance three areas of research related to the human rights violations and social exclusions experienced by unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children in the US, as well as best practices used by service providers. The three areas are: (1) to understand the systems level facilitators and barriers to adjustment for UC, (2) to understand the challenges to formal education for UC, and the strategies that service providers are using to overcome these challenges, and (3) to examine the predictors of self-sufficiency for unaccompanied immigrants leaving foster care. The findings presented in this dissertation have multiple implications for policy, practice, research, and social work education. The qualitative studies provide a groundwork from which we can conduct more research in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the promising practices described, and advocate to increase funding and service availability. Through a greater understanding of the benefits and challenges to education for UC in foster care, we can build more inclusive and welcoming school environments, ultimately leading to higher educational attainment. Understanding the predictors of self-sufficiency can help caseworkers to better create service plans, and help agencies to advocate for funding of supplementary programming. Altogether, it is my hope that this knowledge can contribute to supports that help UC to be happier, thrive in school, and become productive members of our community

Since the 1980’s, education had to face various challenges such as new technologies, new ways of information gathering but also a reconsideration of conventional educational approaches. As a result, more emphasis has been placed on laboratory work in school science. In many industry nations, this trend was likewise bolstered by unexpected poor results in international comparative assessments (e.g. PISA, TIMSS), as well as students’ poor perception of science and, in relation to that, negative effects on career choices. To combat this growing trend, in Germany many out-of-school science laboratories were established in the recent years to foster interest in science. However, despite their positive temporary effects, approaches to increase effects or to develop long term positive changes are in demand. This research investigates how the out-of-school laboratory effects are affected by a preparation and post enhancement based upon previous studies. Therefore, an online portal was developed which provided cognitive and affective content in order to prepare and post enhance students for their visit in an out-of-school laboratory. The research-based study was aimed at students from grade 10 of lower and upper secondary level who perform one-day experimental activities at the out-of-school laboratory located at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf research center. In doing so, a comparative analysis was conducted between students who used the online portal and control group members who just regularly visited the laboratory without a special preparation or post enhancement. The evaluation follows a pre, post, and follow-up approach. Based on the results of this research, it could be confirmed that the online portal, as a tool to prepare and post enhance students, had a significant impact. Moreso, students’ situational interest was positively promoted through the online portal. This also applied for related features, like students’ self-concept as well as their perceptions of the out-of-school laboratory environment and even slight effects on their individual interest. As it turned out regarding the desired situational interest, females benefitted most. However, again most results suggest that evoked effects diminish over time. Even though this likely can be traced back to the characteristics of the post enhancement of the online portal, outcomes regarding students’ interest in science and a career in physics indicate the post enhancement’s ability to ensure sustainability. Within the sample three classes were identified based on their interests. Accordingly, for all classes’ members the portal fosters their situational interest. This especially applies for less scientific interested students. Assessments on the portal’s perception by the students revealed a high degree of willingness to prepare for the laboratory visit and to spend the time required. A large majority appreciated the online portal for their laboratory work. An extended preparation, like presented in this study, is still regarded as acceptable to the students. Nevertheless, a compulsory preparation and post enhancement is highly recommended. On the whole, it can be concluded that the online portal respectively a preparation and post enhancement is beneficial for activities out-of-school
Anfang der 1980er-Jahre ergaben sich im Bildungssektor eine Reihe von Herausforderungen, die im Zusammenhang mit neuen Technologien, neuen Wegen des Informationsaustausches, aber auch des Hinterfragens traditioneller Bildungsansätze standen. Im Ergebnis dessen kam der experimentellen Arbeit im naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht eine stärkere Rolle zu. Unerwartet schwache Ergebnisse internationaler Vergleichsstudien (z.B. PISA, TIMSS) sowie ein schlechtes Image der Naturwissenschaften und damit einhergehende negative Auswirkungen auf die Kurs- und Berufswahl verstärkten diesen Trend in vielen Industrienationen. Vor diesem Hintergrund und mit dem Ziel, Interesse an Naturwissenschaften zu fördern, wurden in Deutschland in den vergangenen Jahren zahlreiche Schülerlabore etabliert. Trotz der Tatsache, dass die Einrichtungen positive Effekte erzielen, sind diese teilweise gering oder schwächen mit der Zeit ab. Wie bisherige Studien vermuten lassen, scheint die Vor- und Nachbereitung von Veranstaltungen im Schülerlabor eine Lösung hierfür zu bieten. Anhand der vorgestellten Studie soll dies untersucht werden. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde ein Online-Portal für Schülerinnen und Schüler entwickelt. Basierend auf kognitiven und affektiven Inhalten bietet es Teilnehmern die Möglichkeit, ihren Schülerlaborbesuch vor- und nachzubereiten. Die Studie richtete sich an Schüler ab der 10. Klasse der Sekundarstufe 1 und 2, die einen Experimentiertag im Schülerlabor DeltaX am Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf absolvierten. Dabei wurden in Form einer Vergleichsstudie Teilnehmer mit und ohne Nutzung des Online-Portals gegenübergestellt. Die entsprechenden Daten der Untersuchung wurden durch eine Fragebogenerhebung im Pre-Post-Follow-up-Design erhoben. Die Ergebnisse der Studie bestätigen den signifikanten Einfluss des Online-Portals. So zeigen sich durchaus positive Effekte hinsichtlich der Entwicklung des aktuellen Interesses der Schülerinnen und Schüler. Gleiches gilt auch im Hinblick auf verwandte Konstrukte wie das Fähigkeitsselbstkonzept, die wahrgenommenen Merkmale der Laborumgebung und auch abgeschwächt für dispositionale Interessen. Bezogen auf die angestrebte Förderung des aktuellen Interesses zeigte sich, dass vor allem Schülerinnen profitieren. Allerdings ließ sich für die meisten der hervorgerufenen Effekte ein Absinken im Verlauf der Zeit erkennen. Möglicherweise ist das auf die Umsetzung der Nachbereitung im Rahmen des Online-Portals zurückzuführen. Die Ergebnisse lassen die Vermutung zu, dass die Nachbereitung bezüglich des Interesses an Naturwissenschaften und an einem physikalischen Beruf das Potenzial besitzt, mehr Nachhaltigkeit hervorzurufen. Um Vorinteressen der Teilnehmer zu berücksichtigen, konnten drei unterschiedliche naturwissenschaftliche Interessensklassen identifiziert werden. Es stellte sich heraus, dass die Entwicklung des aktuellen Interesses aller drei Interessenklassen durch das Online-Portal gefördert wird. Dies gilt vor allem für die gering naturwissenschaftlich interessierten Schülerinnen und Schüler. Untersuchungen, die sich auf das Online-Portal selbst bezogen, offenbarten zum einen ein hohes Maß an Bereitschaft, sich auch mit dem dafür notwendigen zeitlichen Aufwand auf den Experimentiertag im Schülerlabor vorzubereiten. Zum anderen schätzt die breite Mehrheit der Teilnehmer das Online-Portal für ihre Arbeit im Schülerlabor. Selbst eine umfangreichere Vorbereitung wird von den Schülerinnen und Schülern als akzeptabel betrachtet. Es wird dennoch dazu geraten, die Vor- und Nachbereitung obligatorisch durchzuführen. Insgesamt zeigen die Ergebnisse dieser Studie den positiven Einfluss des Online-Portals bzw. der Vor- und Nachbereitung auf außerschulische Aktivitäten

The main objective of the research is to analyze critically how the curriculum at a Community College in the Western Cape prepares young adults for the world of work in the fields of Travel and Tourism and Small Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME) and develops their capabilities to become functioning members in society. I was guided by concepts such as knowledge and skills necessary to enhance employability as well as people‟s wellbeing and capability development. The data was gathered through interviews and analysis of national and institutional policy documents. The analysis of documents helped me to understand the curriculum‟s orientation to the world of work and its responsiveness to personal and social needs of young adults. The interview data helped me to reflect on the main research question, “What are the perspectives of academic staff, industry/sector representatives and young adults themselves on the knowledge and skills needed in the curriculum to prepare young adults for the world of work?” My research shows that the curriculum of the ABET Level 4 programme has become more vocationally oriented. It prepares students for the world of work in a general way; but there are some limitations. There is no practical work experience or work exposure as in the curricula of programmes at TVET colleges and universities. The research also found that the formal curriculum in combination with the extra-curricular activities had benefits for students in terms of personal development and equipping them to function better in their social environments. However, offering these activities depends on efforts made by lecturers over and above their normal duties and on donations from various sources. Extending or sustaining this combination of activities requires adequate staffing and resources. Finally the research highlighted various barriers students encountered and suggested that many of these barriers arise from structural constraints in the world of work and society. The research suggests that it is necessary but not sufficient to focus on the employability of young people and to equip them with knowledge and skills to prepare them for the world of work; it is also necessary to look beyond employability and consider the wellbeing of students (Powell, 2012; Jackson, 2005; Baatjes and Baatjes, 2008; Ngcwangu, 2019; Motala and Pampallis, 2007). Therefore my research suggests that education should not have a narrow focus and that the curriculum should integrate vocational and general education (Young, 1999). Furthermore, there should be a holistic approach in the curriculum which responds to multiple objectives including preparation for work and for functioning effectively in other areas of one‟s life. This implies that the curriculum should prepare students for the world of work AND take into account their well-being, dreams and aspirations for a better life.

This research analyzed the National Program of Access to Technical Learning and Employment (PRONATEC) in the form of Graduation Grants in partnership with the S System, specifically in the town of Ampére, Paraná. The object was to understand PRONATECH‘s operation and structure, especially in partnership with the S System within professional graduation social policies, figuring out how it came to be in the town of Ampére. The research has been grounded on the critical analysis of OLIVEIRA (2007), FRIGOTTO (2005), BARRADAS (1986), CUNHA (2005), NEVES; PRONKO (2008), RAMOS (2011), POCHMANN (2007), to unveil the PRONATECH policy and the partnership with the S System. From bibliographic review, it aimed at putting PRONATECH in a historical context considering the professional preparation in Brazil, from 1909 to the creation of the S System in 1940 to the Workforce Intensive Preparation Program (PIPMO) from 1961 to 1986 to the National Workforce Preparation Plan (PLANFOR) in the 1990s which lasted until 2000. We also highlighted the National Plan of Qualification (PNQ), the latter having preceded PRONATECH. Thus, it was possible to reveal how focal policies are rooted, what the main objectives are and how a program with the PRONATECH magnitude comes true in a small town, bearing in mind the social, political, and economical contexts Brazil has gone through historically. With that in mind, the research aimed at a nationwide analysis, highlighting how PRONATECH is structured, ranking all the initiatives that make up the program in the form of Graduation Grant. As far as PRONATECH is concerned, MEC‘s Control Panel data were used. Through these numbers it was possible to structure and organize the data to put the research together and have an enrollment overview in Brazil, the state of Paraná, in the microregion of the Southwest of Paraná, and in Ampére. These enrollments were identified according to age groups, sex, loan, providing networks and region, technical course types, and Continuous Beginner‘s Preparation (FIC). Finally, the research deeply analyzed PRONATECH in Ampére with semi-structured interviews of students leaving the program and getting to know if the program has helped them entering the job market, and also by showing the dropping-out numbers. The result we have reached showed that the courses offered at PRONATECH in the town of Ampére have not contributed to young people entering the job market, which, according to statements of students who left the program the drop out index has occurred more in technical courses than in FICs. Another aspect that was identified is that FIC courses do not prepare students properly due to their length.
A pesquisa faz uma análise aprofundada do Programa Nacional de Acesso ao Ensino Técnico e Emprego (PRONATEC), na modalidade Bolsa-Formação, em parceria com o Sistema S, na especificidade do município de Ampére – PR. O objetivo consiste em compreender o processo de operacionalização do PRONATEC e sua estruturação, sobretudo em parceria com o Sistema S, no âmbito das políticas sociais de formação profissional, e verificar como se materializou, no município de Ampére. Para desvelar a política do PRONATEC e a parceria com o Sistema S, o estudo fundamenta-se nas análises críticas de OLIVERIA (2007), FRIGOTTO (2005), BARRADAS (1986), CUNHA (2005), NEVES (2008), e historiciza o PRONATEC, no contexto das políticas de formação profissional, no Brasil, em que se evidencia o caminho histórico, desde 1909, à criação do Sistema S, na década de 1940, ao Programa Intensivo de Preparação de Mão de Obra (PIPMO) de 1961 a 1986, e na década 1990, com a criação do Plano Nacional de Qualificação do Trabalhador (PLANFOR) que teve vigência até 2000. Tem destaque, também, o Plano Nacional de Qualificação (PNQ), este que antecedeu o PRONATEC. A partir disso, a pesquisa desvela como as políticas focais estão enraizadas, quais são os principais objetivos e como uma política da envergadura que foi o PRONATEC se materializa, num município do interior, mas em paralelo ao contexto sociopolítico e econômico de cada período histórico, vivido no Brasil. Com base nisso, a pesquisa faz uma análise do contexto nacional, em que evidencia como se estrutura o PRONATEC, elencando todas as iniciativas que compõe o programa, na modalidade Bolsa-Formação. Para a análise do PRONATEC foram utilizados os indicadores do Painel de Controle do MEC, pelos quais foi possível estruturar e tabular os dados para organização da pesquisa e ter um panorama completo das matrículas do Brasil, Paraná, Região Sudoeste e do município de Ampére. Por fim, a pesquisa elucida o PRONATEC, no município de Ampére, através da análise de entrevistas semiestruturadas com alunos egressos que frequentaram esse programa, a fim de identificar se o mesmo contribuiu para entrarem no mercado de trabalho, além de apresentar uma amostragem das evasões. O resultado das entrevistas demonstra que os cursos ofertados, pelo PRONATEC, no município de Ampére, não contribuíram para o ingresso do jovem no mercado de trabalho, e que o índice de evasão ocorreram mais em Cursos Técnicos, do que em FIC (Formação Inicial Continuada). Outro aspecto identificado, na pesquisa, é que os cursos de FIC não formam para o exercício da profissão, tendo em vista o tempo da sua duração.

Abstract:
This study examined the effectiveness of employing videoconferencing and Web-based instruction in the preparation of special education personnel. Due to the acute shortage of special education personnel, it was anticipated that the use of videoconferencing and online instruction would provide a convenient way for students to attend class without having to travel to the actual location of the educational site. Further, it was believed that this initiative would result in higher student enrollment in special education teacher certification programs, consequently leading to an increase of personnel in the field. Moreover, the increase in personnel would enhance the ability of educational institutions to address the dismal academic, social, and behavioral outcomes of students with disabilities. Information for the study was collected from surveys that investigated how students perceived the use of videoconferencing and web-based instruction in the preparation of special education personnel. Ninety-four graduate students responded to the videoconferencing surveys while 88 responded to the Web-based instruction surveys. Six respondents were randomly selected to participate in face-to-face interviews designed to investigate the effectiveness of both approaches. Findings indicated that videoconferencing and Web-based instruction are convenient ways for students to attend class although videoconferencing sites may not be conveniently located to all learners. Furthermore, the effectiveness of these media depends on several factors: the instructor, the course structure, the learners' learning styles, the quality and quantity of interaction between learners and the instructor, and whether technological problems interfere with the learning process. The study determined that the more structured and organized the course, the more significant the learning outcomes. Also, the maturity level of the students lends itself to accountability toward achieving the desired learning goals. Technological problems and the lack of user-friendly technology lower the effectiveness of videoconferencing and Web-based instruction. Further research will be valuable in improving theories and approaches currently used in the application of videoconferencing and Web-based instruction in the preparation of special education personnel.

This study explores how tertiary education supports and prepares students to take up a career today. The research question is: How can the preparation for the transition from school to work be streamlined at Ibri College of Technology with reference to globalisation? Classroom-based practices were considered in this case study in Oman, to establish how the objectives of stakeholders can be met in pursuit of their goals, within the set curriculum and culture. The objectives were to: • Interpret and evaluate the respondents' responses to the research-instruments appropriate to existing literature and current employer demands; • explore perceptions of educational activities considering cultural diversity; and • provide guidelines for streamlining the transition. It is concluded from the didactic triangle that the better lecturers are prepared to comply with expectations of the students and curricula, the more positively learner achievement is impacted at college. Continuously updating the curricula embraces global occupational requirements as well as didactic goals. This theory applies equally to all the stakeholders and influences how students eventually manage modern workplace demands. Prioritising structured communication practices alongside EFL and technology as skills, support school to work transitions in tandem with the adolescents' progression towards adulthood. The value of this study lies in its contribution to the body of knowledge on this complicated transition in Oman. The findings and conclusions assist instructors as well as their students whose transition from school to work can subsequently be streamlined. It also sustains economic and social occupational processes, in the Sultanate and globally, now and in the future.

Darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti žmonių gelbėjimo, įvykus nelaimingam atsitikimui, aktualumą, atskleisti problemos aktualumą žemės ūkio gamyboje, ištirti žemės ūkio darbuotojų pasirengimą gelbėti mirtinai traumuotą žmogų ir pasiūlyti priemones šiam pasirengimui gerinti. Nustatyta, kad 60-70 proc. iš visų nelaimingų atsitikimų (NA) įvyksta dėl neteisingų dirbančiojo veiksmų. Išnagrinėtos žmogaus psichofizinės savybės, dėl jų susiformuojantys veiksniai, kurie tampa NA priežastimi. Nustatytos kai kurios priemonės, mažinančios šių priežasčių pasireiškimą. Aukštesnis saugumo lygmuo gali būti pasiektas diegiant naujų, sudėtingesnių pažangios technologijos pavojų kontrolę, tam kad aukšto lygio saugumas panaikintų pažangios technologijos pavojus bei tos priemonės butų įgyvendintos. Lietuvoje žemės ūkis pagal įvykusių NA darbe skaičių yra šeštoje vietoje iš penkiolikos tarp visų ekonominės veiklos rūšių. Atlikus sociologinį tyrimą, kuriame dalyvavo 241 žemės ūkio darbuotojai iš įvairių Lietuvos regionų, buvo nustatyta, kad ūkininkai du kartus dažniau nei samdomi darbuotojai sugebėtų gaivinti staiga mirusį žmogų. Atlikus eksperimentinius tyrimus, paaiškėjo, kad pirmosios pagalbos mokymo efektyvumas priklauso nuo mokymo metodų.

Research goal – analyse people life saving urgency during accident, discover problem importance in agriculture industry, examine agriculturists preparation for life saving to man who is deadly traumatized and propose a new measures to improve this preparation. It is established, that 60-70 proc. of all accidents are occurred because of wrong worker actions. Person‘s psychophysical characteristics, factors caused by these characteristics that become the reasons of accidents werw investigated. It was foreseen some means that decrease display of these reasons. A higher level of safety may be achieved through control of the new, more complicated risks of advanced technology if high-level safety complicated risks of advanced technology if high-level safety engineering has been implemented. In Lithuania agriculture industry is the sixth from the top in the list of fifteen kinds of economical activity in means of number of work accidents. After sociological investigation among 241 agriculture workers from different regions of Lithuania, we have discovered twice more farmers, comparing with hired labour men, know, how to act, when work accident has occured. The expermental investigation results proved dependence of right training methods to higher effectiveness of first aid training.
