Abstract:
Defence Research and Development Canada - Atlantic has been investigating ideas and tools to aid shipboard planning teams with course of action (COA) development. Considerable previous research on operational planning suggests that the process is not well-suited to shipboard planning. In light of the shortcomings of current planning methods, the PreMortem method was investigated as a methodology to aid shipboard planning teams in developing more intuitive and creative COAs. The aim of this research was to evaluate planning teams’ acceptance, ease of use and perceived value of the PreMortem as an addition to traditional decision matrix planning methods. The results suggest that the PreMortem method adds value in the form of COA creativity over traditional planning methods. The PreMortem method is a recommended addition to the current process.

Abstract:
Anticipating risks in software development is always challenging, but particularly so when the software application is part of a novel sociotechnical system with various human and physical components. Our interdisciplinary team of software engineering and human factors researchers is designing such a system. In order to identify and mitigate the risks latent in this previously unexplored space, we have used the premortem method at an early stage in system design. In the premortem, the team ideated failure scenarios across the range of system use, then collaborated on ways to eliminate, mitigate, or monitor the risks of these failures. We have found the premortem method valuable in recognizing and mitigating previously unanticipated risks and in enriching team communication.

Newman, David John. "Decision-Making for Oil and Gas Projects: Using Front End Loading and Decision Analysis More Effectively." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/121701.

Full text
Abstract:
The oil & gas industry has a history of projects not achieving the outcomes promised at sanction. It is well-known that good Front End Loading (FEL) will increase the likelihood of project success. However, despite this, a significant number of projects proceed with insufficient FEL. This research aims to find out why this is, and to develop ways of influencing decision makers so that FEL will be used more effectively in future. Making high quality decisions is the best way of maximising the likelihood of achieving desirable outcomes. Decision Analysis (DA) is a pragmatic methodology for making high quality decisions that has been around for many decades. However, it is not always used when making key decisions on oil and gas projects. This research aims to determine why this is, and to find ways to influence decision makers to use DA more effectively. Interviews and a survey were carried out with senior personnel from oil and gas companies to determine their knowledge and understanding of FEL and DA, how they think they should be used and how they are used in practice. These studies demonstrated a strong belief that FEL must be carried out if a project is to be successful, and that DA needs to be applied for major decisions - but these only happen in practice around half of the time. A follow up survey was carried out to clarify issues outstanding from the interviews and the initial survey, and to determine the likely uptake of proposals to encourage better use to be made of FEL and DA. There was strong support for the proposals which included developing a simple tool to give a pragmatic assessment of FEL, having performance incentives based on achieving good FEL and high Decision Quality, and undertaking training on project decision making. An experiment was set up to investigate how training, and the way a decision is framed, influence the approach taken for project decision making. Half of the participants received training by watching three short online videos, the other half received no training. They all then answered questions on three decision making scenarios for projects. The results showed that training influenced decisionmakers to take a more structured and process-based approach, and that the way a decision is framed by an authority figure has a strong influence on the approach taken for project decision making. An alternative way of assessing FEL has been developed to encourage FEL to be used more effectively and increase the likelihood of delivering better project outcomes. It is a simple, decision-based approach to assessing FEL which can be carried out in-house. It is proposed that it is used in conjunction with FEL benchmarking to gain the benefits of both approaches, provide a better understanding of FEL, and have a stronger basis for decision-making.

Abstract:
The first Western translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead by Walter Y. Evans-Wentz (1927) played a central role for the emerging belief that experiences near death are prevalent in non-Western cultures too. Especially noteworthy is the Tibetan Buddhist description of “Clear Light of Pure Reality,” but also frightening experiences of consciousness in the afterlife realm, and the necessity of a “guide.” The chapter describes how Theosophical preconceptions led to a view that Tibetan Buddhism corroborates premortal and postmortal out-of-body experiences or rebirth doctrines. As such, it became highly influential for C.G. Jung and other scholars of the “psyche,” paranormal experiences, and religion, allowing them to argue for a transcultural dimension of experiences near death, and experiences after death.

Abstract:
Mormon theology begins with idea of a covenant instituted in a premortal council, whereby heavenly parents invite humans into eternal relationship with them. The church is instituted to provide both salvation, and the assurance of such salvation. The Reformation radically redefined the nature of the church and the role of sacraments. Joseph Smith’s personal journey and religion-making career began in very similar circumstances to those of John Wesley (and indeed, Smith was long inclined toward Methodism and greatly influenced by it). Mormonism arose out of Joseph Smith’s anxiety over salvation, and returns to a Catholic model of sacramentalism and priesthood authority. To the underlying framework Smith gives the name the New and Everlasting Covenant, and the impetus for this reformulation is in the Book of Mormon. 96

Abstract:
Protestant covenant theology is predicated on opposition of Old Testament and New Testament, literal Israel and spiritual Israel, covenant of works and covenant of grace, Moses and the gospel. The Book of Mormon conflates all those polarities into the New and Everlasting Covenant that became central to Smith’s understanding of his prophetic calling and the massive project of “restoration” to which he devoted his life. When Smith published the Book of Mormon, the scripture’s title page heralded a new version of covenant theology, with an emphatic declaration of salvational assurance: the Book of Mormon’s very purpose, its final editor tells readers on the title page itself, is “to show unto the remnant of the House of Israel that they are not cast off forever.” Smith pushes the time frame of the covenant into premortal worlds and defines apostasy as the loss of this cosmic context and purpose of making the human family divine. Executing the plan involves adoption, an earthly Zion, and temples for sacraments. 107

Abstract:
This is a study of the general scheme of organization, offices, authority, and practices that God designed to bring to fruition his ultimate intentions for the human family, which scheme arises out of the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that is, Mormonism. As a study of ecclesiology, the focus is on how Mormon ideas and doctrines have been formally implemented through an ecclesiastical structure and modes of worship. Underlying Mormon theology is a radically reconstituted covenant theology, which Mormons call the New and Everlasting Covenant, which has its origins in premortal or pre-existent councils, envisions mortality as an educative process rather than as a digression entailed by an Adamic fall, and finds culmination in the theosis or divinization of all humans. Such theosis anticipates the incorporation of men and women into a heavenly family, which end is achieved through a system of covenants and temple ordinances or sacraments. Also vital to this process are proper authority, or priesthood, an organizational structure to the church, spiritual gifts, and scriptures that include but go beyond the Bible. The study concludes with an overview of Mormon practices of boundary maintenance and discipline.

Abstract:
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) packages can be described as the most sought after means of organisational transformation and IT innovation since the mid 1990s. Over the past decade, ERP packages have become a major part of the organisational landscape and form the cornerstone of IS architectures for an ever increasing percentage of organisations. Despite the strong push toward enterprise-wide ERP systems in the wider organisational community and the experience accumulated over 20 years of large scale integrated systems implementations, there is, in relation to ERP deployment, a lack of understanding of the specific project management required to counter the difficulties that can arise when organisations fail to ensure that all the required factors of success are present in their projects. Therefore, novel ideas to help managers and project managers to better prepare for enterprise-wide ERP projects are badly needed. This entry presents a method of practical relevance for organisational decision-makers by introducing the concept of a devil’s advocate workshop—reminiscent of Klein’s premortem sessions (Klein, 1993, 2002), but tailor-made for large scale Information Systems projects—which leverages the concept of sense-making, in introducing a preplanning “intelligence” phase in any enterprise-wide ERP project life-cycle.

Abstract:
The article deals with solution of the scientific-practical task of modern forensic medicine: substantiation for medicolegal assessment of prescription of formation of posttraumatic sub- and epidural haemorrhages in living persons. The purpose: to determine the age of hematoma in living persons by the parameters of functional changes in the blood system and erythrocyte hematopoiesis. Methodology of the study is based on general research methods of analysis of cytological results the haematological indices, which were the most available and effective ones in accelerated diagnosis of the prescription of appearance of posttrtaumatic sub- and epidural haemorrhages, were studied by means of including methods of examination of aggregate properties of blood cells (superficial cytoarchitectonics of erythrocytes) and coagulation haemostasis parameters (fibrinogen, prothrombin, thrombocytes) into the methodological scheme. Results. In victims with epi- and subdural hematomas, changes in blood parameters (hemoglobin, erythrocytes, platelets, prothrombin, fibrinogen) were phase in nature. Against the background of stable control group figures, the number of erythrocytes decreased from the 1st to the 6th day with further rise (12th – 21st days of observations) and stabilization for 90 days. The increase in hemoglobin occurred from the 1st day of observation to the 21st day and ended with a digital plateau on the 90th day of the study. The parameters of coagulation hemostasis (fibrinogen, prothrombin) had similar digital profiles with outbreaks of rises on the 1st day of observation and a decrease in indicators on the 6th and 12th days, respectively. The increase in platelet count was gradual until the 12th day of observation. The erythrocyte link of the blood reacted to the occurrence of epi- and subdural hematomas by the appearance of coordination phenomena and changes in the surface membrane of cells with the development (in the approximate and distant delayed periods – 3-21 days) of expressive dispersion of forms from ovals, spherocytes to echino-. Gender-age dependence was not observed in the groups. Practical implications. The obtained data fully contribute to a reasonable solution of an important practical issue: determining the role of functional parameters of blood, its erythrocyte population in the development of unified programs / algorithms to determine diagnostic premortem markers of hematoma in the face of craniocerebral injuries. Value/originality lies in the possibility of applying the results of the work in modern diagnostic algorithms for the prescription of hematomas.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the lexico-stylistic analysis of the scene of Prince Andrei’s premortal dream, which includes a number of complex ontological, existential, psychological problems. The rhythmic organization of the episode, the key images-symbols: “it” / death, a door, a dream, a mirror, white colour associated with the concept of Tolstoy’s death, and their functioning in other works of Russian classical literature are analyzed in detail. The author of the article pays special attention to the works of V.V. Vinogradov, A. Pothebnya. Implemented observations carried out expand the ideas about the artist’s ambivalent thanatological views, which echoed both Christian and ancient, Buddhist, Taoist ideas with the ideas of Schopenhauer, and allow one to penetrate deeper into Tolstoy’s interpretation of the fate of one of the central heroes of “War and Peace”. The scene of Prince Andrei’s premortal dream prepares the reader to the dream of his son in which he appears in the otherworld, without image and form.

Abstract:
In 1835, Joseph Smith acquired four mummies and a trove of papyri from an antiquities dealer. He claimed that the papyri included a narrative of the patriarch Abraham, and over the following years he translated the Book of Abraham. It describes a creation presided over by “gods” and details a premortal council in which human “intelligences” are present and a Savior is chosen. Controversy over Smith’s “translation” erupted almost immediately and reignited in 1967 when some of the original papyri were made public. Egyptologists identify those fragments as Egyptian funerary documents, unrelated to Smith’s Book of Abraham chronologically or thematically. Some Latter-day Saint apologists disagree, finding the Egypticity of Smith’s narrative credible. Other apologists agree that his work fails as translation in the conventional sense but succeeds as genuinely inspired scripture.

Abstract:
The article is related to the issue of the highest expediency of the world order, the organic connection between the earthly and the heavenly, the musical harmony of the universe and the purpose of man, the moral duty of an individual and all mankind on the example of analyzing Petya Rostov’s dreamy vision before his death. The dreams of a young hero are a revelation associated with the issues of the universe, they become omens to the lesion of dark, destructive elements and victories of ordering and beauty over evil and ataxia. The salvation of Russian people became possible with the spiritual union of the nation, the awakening of the “swarm” principle. This fragment of the epic novel clearly reflected the artist’s cosmology, which is close to the ideas of ancient Greek philosophy, the teachings of the Pythagoreans, Plato, and the ethical views of the founder of German classical philosophy I. Kant. In the events of the Patriotic War of 1812, the writer saw the manifestation of those patterns that, from his point of view, govern the universe, the predetermined course of history, the triumph of the correct world order.
