A lunar lander is exposed to extreme lunar thermal environments with a nighttime of 14.75 earth days. Thus, a proper thermal design is an important task to guarantee a successful lunar mission. This paper describes a preliminary thermal design and analysis results of a lunar lander to ensure its survivability during lunar night. The effectiveness of the thermal designs of a lunar lander with various thermal hardwares was numerically investigated according to the landing candidate areas to determine which design is the most feasible for night survival. In addition, we analyzed the mechanical safety of the solder joint of electronic components in accordance with the operating temperature range, because it is an important factor for reducing the system power budget during night survival.

Two figures of merit for hybrid Thermal Energy Storage (TES) units are developed: the volumetric figure of merit, V˜, and the temperature control figure of merit, ΔT˜. A dimensional analysis shows that these quantities are related to the performance specification of the storage unit and its physical design. A previously benchmarked semi-empirical finite volume model is used to study the characteristics of various plate-type TES-unit designs. A parametric study is used to create a database of optimal designs, which is then used to form simple correlations of V˜ and ΔT˜ in terms of design requirements and attributes. A preliminary design procedure utilizing these figures of merit is suggested. Sample calculations show that these correlations can be used to quickly determine the design attributes of a plate-type TES-unit, given design requirements.

ABSTRACTThermal-mechanical design is a time-consuming process even at its preliminary design stage. This is due to the large number of components and boundary condition data, the complexity of the geometry, and the iterative nature of the design process. The conventional design process separates the geometric and physical models and results in considerable human interventions during the design process. By assigning the breakpoints to engine assembly features as internal parameters, this article reports a novel feature-based design approach where the associated boundary conditions are represented parametrically along the feature geometric contours. They are updated automatically as per the geometrical changes, including topological changes, and hence bridging the gap between the geometric and physical models. The current approach enables data re-use of both the geometries and physical information from previous engine designs to generate new designs, dispensing with the excessive human interventions. Although the methodology is generic and applicable to other design scenarios, its capability is demonstrated in this article by some representative challenging industrial applications, sitting in the 2D preliminary gas-turbine design domain. The test cases show that the method can significantly reduce the time-cost of the iterative thermal-mechanical design flow.

Abstract:
This work takes an empirical and evidence-based approach in the development of a resorption thermal transformer. It presents the initial modelling conducted to understand key performance parameters (coefficient of performance and specific mean power) before discussing a preliminary design. Experimental results from large temperature jump and isosteric heating tests have identified the importance of heat transfer in ammonia-salt systems. Both the heat transfer resistance between the salt composite adsorbent and the tube side wall, and the heat transfer from the heat transfer fluid to the tube side wall are key to realising resorption systems. The successful performance of a laboratory-scale prototype will depend on the reduction in these heat transfer resistances, and improvements may be key in future prototype machines. A sorption reactor is sized and presented, which can be scaled for length depending on the desired power output. The reactor design presented was derived using data on reaction kinetics constants and heat of reaction for calcium chloride reacting with ammonia that were obtained experimentally. The data enabled accurate modelling to realise an optimised design of a reactor, focusing on key performance indicators such as the coefficient of performance (COP) and the system power density. This design presents a basis for a demonstrator that can be used to collect and publish dynamic data and to calculate a real COP for resorption system.

Thermal design and thermal analysis of control cabinet for pattern sewing machine was researched to make components’ temperature meets the requirement. Basic flow sheet of research process was introduced. Then, preliminary thermal design and thermal analysis was performed, and the computed result indicated that temperature of some components was out of limit. Next, by optimizing the location of fan and components in cabinet, the temperature of servo driver 1 to 3 dropped 11.1 oC, 10.8 oC and 11.3 oC respectively. The data shows that cabinet’s heat dissipation is improved, and the thermal design of the cabinet is reasonable. Finally, Thermal test of the prototype was performed, which proves the thermal design is effective, and the numerical simulation result is correct.

Renewable energy sources have grown in popularity in a variety of applications over the last century, particularly in solar power generation. Exploiting solar energy in low-medium temperature systems via the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is a prospective idea for producing clean energy in remote areas at a low cost. The amount of solar energy available in Hungary is sufficient to power the ORC system. In this study, a parabolic through collector (PTC) solar collector is used to convert solar thermal energy into a heat stream that is used to boil the working fluid of R134a, which was chosen as a good ORC working fluid because it has a low boiling point as well as a low ODP and GWP value. Many recent studies have studied solar-ORC both from a theoretical and experimental point of view in various areas, especially in design system. In this study, the preliminary design that overcomes the need for solar-ORC, including an analysis of energy, the efficiency of the system, and turboexpander characteristics using different pinch temperatures (10 °C and 5 °C) will be elaborated. The weather data in June is used for initial data input, for calculations in the PTC solar collector. The result shows that the ORC system with 5 °C has a better result in view of the energy from the turbine and the thermal efficiency, compared to the ORC system with 10 °C.

A city’s characteristics of mixed-use zoning, diverse built form, high-density development, and residual heat generation by urban processes, present potential for optimizing the thermal energy end-use of certain waste streams. A method was developed to identify sources of waste thermal energy and heat demand clusters in a mixed-use jurisdiction and design a preliminary primary network of a district heating system based on these waste heat sources. The method applies systems analysis, energy potential mapping (GIS spatial analysis) and network optimization (linear programming) techniques. The method is implemented using a case study of data for peninsular Halifax. Finally, the method and implementation’s influence on climate change (i.e. a reduction in GHG emissions) and energy security, two central themes of this research, are discussed.

Turbomachinery plays an important role in the propulsion and heavy-duty industry. Improving the efficiency and reliability of gas turbines continue to be an important driver in the development of modern engines and power generation. There are two straightforward and effective methods for improving the performance of a gas turbine engine. One is increasing the engine pressure ratio to raise the thermal efficiency, the other is increasing the outlet temperature of a combustor to raise the specific thrust. Therefore, the gas turbine combustors working conditions are moving towards higher temperature rise and higher heat capacity. Therefore, the design requirements for a combustor become stricter, such as a wider working range, shorter length, and smaller distribution of outlet temperature. Simultaneously, the combustor is required to have a longer life and lower pollutant emission. In this scenario, a fundamental role is played by the cooling system. The definition of the most appropriate scheme represents one of the most challenging tasks in the combustor since it directly determines the components life. During the design and subsequent optimization phases of a combustor cooling system, the designer must consider several uncertainties related to manufacturing, geometry and operating conditions. These gaps can be very impacting on the system performance, so it is obvious that the design becomes a matter of optimization of the whole system. This requires an accurate assessment of trade-offs to meet all requirements. The design choices made in the first phases influence the following developments and it is essential to have a tool as efficient and flexible as possible to rely on. During the initial stages, 1-D codes are still widely used in industrial practice, and a low-order approach is preferred over high-fidelity simulations. These tools are important for designers because they allow having a good understanding of the problem, in relatively short times and with low general costs. Although these analyses have a good predictive level, they are often used when input quantities that characterize the problem are roughly known. These gaps lead to the inclusion of uncertainties within the code, which propagate and eventually influence the solution. The final common objective is to optimize the various components to find out the configuration in which the machine is independent from the uncertainties that may afflict it, thus arriving at a robust design. The aim of this thesis is the development of a numerical procedure for the preliminary thermal design of combustor liners (Therm-1D/Dakota). This procedure is based on the coupling of a one-dimensional tool (Therm-1D), developed by DIEF of the University of Florence, and a software that allows uncertainty quantifications analyses (Dakota). This has allowed the development of an innovative, faster, and more reliable procedure for the preliminary design and optimization of combustor cooling systems that is able to estimate the uncertainties affecting the results of this numerical simulations. In this way, the output quantities are as independent as possible from input uncertainties.

AbstractWe study whether the vibrotactile and thermal senses are independent in terms of information transmission. In Exp. 1, we estimated the respective information transmission capacities of vibrotactile and thermal stimuli. In Exp. 2, we measured the information transfer (IT) of vibrotactile-thermal multimodal stimuli. We compare the IT values obtained in the two experiments and demonstrate that approximately 90% of the information encoded through the two sensory modalities is preserved when they are combined. This result can contribute to the design of multimodal haptic stimuli for various user-interactive purposes.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common non-communicable diseases; approximately 0.72 million people in South Africa require insulin treatment. Insulin—a hormone peptide drug— is temperature sensitive and undergoes thermal fibrillation when exposed to temperature above manufacturers' recommendations. Most insulin formations must be stored at 2°C - 8°C in a refrigerator when unopened to maintain its potency and to keep insulin within manufacturers' suggested expiry date. However, one of the unforeseen consequences of frequent power outages in South Africa—and many other developing nations—is thermal denaturation of insulin within household refrigerators caused by frequent power outages. In addition, users cannot tell if insulin has reduced pharmacological action. This publication presents a preliminary design for an in-refrigerator medicine storage container utilising phase-change material to stabilise the temperature of insulin or other medications during power outages, and to provide a visual indicator if a melting event has occurred, even if refrigeration has subsequently been restored, to alert the user that their insulin may have expired. It is found that the principal variables of interest to determine the time to melting are the thickness of the layer of phase-change material in the unit's walls, and the degree of insulation of the outer shell surrounding the phase-change material. It is also determined that asymmetric insulation parameters for the inner and outer surfaces of the container's walls are a crucial design feature for usability, permitting an initial freezing time that is more rapid than the melting time. The current design has been found to be unable to meet all usability criteria, primarily due to an unacceptably long freezing time, regardless of the values of the available parameters. It is therefore concluded that design revisions are required to meet all usability criteria

While there are many places in Italy that cater to the population with low vision or who is blind, for example the “Museo Tattile Statale Omero” in Ancona, the remarks made by the Unione Italiana Ciechi e Ipovedenti (U.I.C.I) of Bologna on the issue state that “the issues produced by perceptual barriers, inherent in visual disabilities, do not find adequate answers in the current accessibility regulations”. To integrate the accessibility of museums and other cultural services, considered by UNESCO as a fundamental human right that must be granted to people with disabilities (article 30, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) the authors present a design, in its early stages, of a system that aims to make the fruition of scale models independent for users with low vision or who are blind. Said system aims to integrate some sort of augmented reality to haptic perception by reproducing sound cues to help users with disabilities navigate a single, or a series of models without any outside aid. The system is based on the deployment of technological plinths to support the scale models. This approach is well fit for retrofitting existing scale models while integrating the navigation system in an effective fashion. The activation of the plinths will be triggered using a smartphone app (either using NFC or Bluetooth) and will reproduce a set routine to guide the user in the haptic exploration of the models. On the outer rim of the plinths a series of triggers and devices will be placed for the user to interact, while leaving some space between the elements to house details at a larger scale or braille plaques. The triggers will be distinguished by their shape, a proud start trigger and a recessed end trigger; the interface is completed by an array of 8 speakers (one each 45°) with the possibility of ulterior sound emitting elements embodied in new models. The current design also defines the properties of the material that will be used in the prototyping phase by excluding rough surfaces that could introduce haptic noise and suggesting the use of thermoplastic polymers or stabilized wood over metals (since a metallic surface could be problematic in exterior installations due to its high thermal conductivity). The concurrent deployment of multiple plinths will consent the independent navigation and queuing of users in a contained exhibit by triggering a positional sound to guide them, while in urban context the app will have to be integrated with systems that implemented detailed voice guidance such as google maps. The paper ends by describing the future prototyping stages the system is expected to go through to fine tune the preliminary design.

The FireFlux II field experiment was conducted on January 30th, 2013 in south-east Texas, USA, under high fire danger conditions. The experiment was designed to study the behavior of a head fire progressing through a flat, tall grass prairie, and it was informed by the use of a coupled fire-atmosphere model. Vegetation properties and fuel moisture were measured shortly before the experiment. Near-surface atmospheric conditions were monitored during the experiment using an elaborate meteorological instrumentation array. Fire behavior was observed through a combination of remote and in-situ sensors. Clements et al. (2019) presented the analysis of the experiment micrometeorology and in-situ fire behavior observations acquired using a thermocouple array. In this paper, we extend the study of fire behavior during the FireFlux II experiment with the analysis of remote sensing observations. Two thermal infrared and two visible cameras were deployed during the experiment. One thermal and one visible camera were mounted on a helicopter, whereas the other two cameras were installed on a 40-m-height tower next to the burn unit. The tower infrared camera covered a reduced area of interest coincident with the thermocouple array and it allowed monitoring the fire spread as well as measuring the spatially-resolved evolution of brightness temperature. Imagery collected from the helicopter allowed extending fire behavior measurements to the complete burn unit. While airborne IR footage was saturated and did not allow estimation of emitted radiant heat, its analysis allowed tracking fire progression through the plot and therefore estimating rate of spread and fire time of arrival. The existence of in-situ temperature observations provides an outstanding opportunity to validate remote sensing methodologies. In addition, the combination of remote observations with in-situ temperature measurements allows a comprehensive characterization of fire behavior, including spatially-resolved fire rate of spread and fire time of arrival, fire radiative power, Byram’s fire line intensity, and air temperature during fire front passage. The current version of this paper presents preliminary results from this analysis. Such results demonstrate the usefulness of the selected datasets and the potential of the proposed methodology, encouraging further work. Possible applications of the resulting dataset include (i) the validation of existing fire behavior models that are able to predict any of the measured variables, (ii) the development of data-driven fire behavior models, and (iii) the investigation of the relative contribution of radiative and convective heat transfer mechanisms to fire spread.
