Abstract:
In the media, one type of prejudice is often discussed as isolated from other types of prejudice. For example, after Breivik’s massacre, intolerance toward Muslims was intensely debated (for good reasons). However, his manifesto also disclosed extreme attitudes towards women and gays, a fact which passed without much notice. Still, in understanding why some individuals are so extremely intolerant compared to others, the psychological unity underlying different kinds of prejudice (e.g., racism, sexism) needs to be considered. This psychological unity, referred to as generalized prejudice, provided the starting point for personality theories on prejudice because it suggests that some people are simply more biased than other people in principle. Today it is well known that two basic personality characteristics, agreeableness and openness to new experiences, are powerful predictors of prejudice. However, more precisely what these variables can, versus cannot, explain has received little attention. Consequently, the aim of this thesis was to provide a more fine-grained analysis of generalized prejudice and its personality roots. Paper I demonstrated that personality mainly accounts for variance shared by several prejudice targets (generalized prejudice) whereas group membership mainly predicts unique variance in prejudice towards a particular target group. Thus, personality and group membership factors explain prejudice for different reason, and do not contradict each other. Paper II demonstrated, across three studies, that agreeableness and openness to experience are related to self-reported (explicit) prejudice, but not automatically expressed (implicit) biases. Personality seems informative about who chooses to express devaluing sentiments, but not who harbors spontaneous biases. Finally, Paper III examined the assumption that personality explains (explicit) generalized prejudice because some people simply favor their own group over all other groups (ethnocentrism). Providing the first direct test of this assumption, the results from three studies suggest that while agreeableness and openness to experience explain generalized prejudice, they do not account for purely ethnocentric attitudes. This indicates a fundamental difference between ethnocentrism and generalized prejudice. All in all, self-reported personality seems to have little to do with spontaneous group negativity or simple ingroup favoritism. However, personality strongly predicts deliberate and verbalized devaluation of disadvantaged groups.

Efter Breivik’s massaker debatterades till exempel intolerans mot muslimer i stor utsträckning, men det diskuterades inte mycket kring att han även uttryckt extrema åsikter om kvinnor och homosexuella. Likväl är den gemensamma nämnaren i sådana attityder av yttersta vikt för att förstå varför vissa individer är mer intoleranta än andra. Tidigare forskning visar att personer som är mer rasistiska än andra också tenderar att vara mer sexistiska, samt nedvärdera till exempel, handikappade människor. Den gemensamma nämnare i sådana attityder kallas generaliserad fördomsfullhet och utgör grundbulten i personlighetsteorier om fördomar då det pekar på att somliga alltid tycks ogilla/nedvärdera utsatta grupper. Idag är det även välkänt att två personlighetsvariabler, vänlighet och öppenhet för nya erfarenheter, beskriver vem som uttrycker mer fördomar än andra. Däremot har det inte ägnats mycket kraft åt frågan vad exakt det är som dessa variabler förklarar, respektive inte förklarar. Syftet med avhandlingen var därmed att erbjuda en mer detaljerad analys av kopplingen mellan personlighet och generaliserad fördomsfullhet. Artikel I visade att personlighet förklarar den gemensamma nämnaren i olika typer av fördomar, medan grupptillhörighet (exempelvis kön) förklarar skillnader som är unika för fördomar mot en viss grupp (kvinnor). Personlighet och grupptillhörighet kompletterar alltså varandra som förklaringar snarare än att vara motsägelsefulla, såsom vissa forskare menat. Tre studier från Artikel II visade att vänlighet och öppenhet till nya erfarenheter hänger samman med viljekontrollerade fördomar, men inte spontana negativa associationer. Målet med Artikel III var att undersöka om personlighet förklarar fördomar av anledningen att vissa alltid favoriserar sin egen grupp över andra grupper (så kallad etnocentrism). Denna tanke har tagits för givet inom forskning om fördomsfullhet, men antagandet har inte testats empiriskt. Resultaten från tre studier pekar på att, till skillnad från generaliserad fördomsfullhet, så visar etnocentrism i sig inte på några starka samband med personlighet. Sammanfattningsvis så hänger varken vänlighet eller öppenhet ihop med spontan gruppnegativitet eller att ogilla ”de andra”. Däremot så pekar personlighetsfaktorer i stor utsträckning på vem som väljer att uttryckligen nedvärdera utsatta grupper.

In this thesis, I strive to expose societal rules and regulations that constrict and restrict our social interactions in a way that promotes prejudice and xenophobia. Through interacting with the series of sculptures, viewers are given the opportunity to question these societal norms and start a process of self-reflection to truly understand the freedom that comes without prejudice. Interaction is the main element that ties the series of works together, to form a seamless journey of self-discovery. The following artists are discussed in relation to this series of work: Niki de Saint Phalle and Björk Guðmundsdóttir. Their art works share the same spirit of liberation and social revolution.

Abstract : The contemporary organizational interest about innovation has led to several attempts to tame it through broad calls for creativity and design practices. Most of the times, these calls evade the confrontation between the process of continuous renewal of the ephemeral on one side; and the tradition and prejudice on the other. The purpose of this study is to make sense of a discourse that augment the potential of groups to create knowledge so to act into the future, towards better performance and longevity. Based on the concept of Need for Closure, from a hermeneutic perspective and inspired by a reflexive methodological approach, the present study sheds light on the impacts of prejudice on innovative efforts of groups. The presented data and results answer positively the research question of this thesis by indicating that there is a relation between the motivated cognitive tendency of an individual in a group (NFC Mean) and the potential of that group to create products perceived as innovative (OUP Mean). These results enable to describe NFC Mean as a positive and significant predictor of OUP Mean. Supported by an empirical study and quantitative data analysis, it proposes a Prejudice Related Innovativeness Determinants Heuristic (PRIDHe) to enable groups to effectively augment their innovative potential. The heuristic suggests forms of assigning people to and defines a governance policy for groups, in order to provide a creative environment where prejudice does not so much confine actions as suggest new opportunities to act into the future. The main theoretical contribution of this work lies in the reflections about the positive impacts of prejudice in innovative efforts. The discourse proposed by this text can be summarized as: organizations that are aware about their prejudices and the impacts of these are more likely to perform better.

O interesse organizacional contemporâneo a respeito da inovação levou a várias tentativas de domá-la por meio de amplas chamadas para as práticas de criatividade e design. Na maioria das vezes, essas chamadas fogem do confronto entre o processo de renovação contínua do efêmero de um lado; e a tradição e o preconceito, por outro. O objetivo deste estudo é fazer sentido de um discurso para aumentar o potencial de criação de conhecimento de grupos, de modo a atuarem na direção do futuro, para um melhor desempenho e longevidade. Baseado no conceito de Necessidade de Enquadramento (Need for Closure), a partir de uma perspectiva hermenêutica e inspirado por uma abordagem metodológica reflexiva, o presente estudo lança luz sobre os impactos do preconceito nos esforços inovadores de grupos. Os dados e resultados apresentados respondem positivamente à pergunta de pesquisa da tese, indicando que existe uma relação entre a tendência de motivação cognitiva de indivíduos em um grupo (NFC Mean) e o potencial desse grupo de criar produtos percebidos como inovativos (OUP Mean). Esses resultados habilitam a descrever o NFC Mean como uma variável preditora (ou explicativa) positiva e significativa do OUP Mean.Apoiado por um estudo empírico e análise quantitativa de dados. Assim, este estudo propõe uma heurística baseada em determinantes de inovatividade relacionados a preconceito (denominada Prejudice Related Innovativeness Determinants Heuristic  PRIDHe), para aumentar efetivamente o potencial inovativo de grupos sociais. A heurística sugere formas de alocar pessoas em e define uma política de governança para grupos, a fim de proporcionar um ambiente criativo onde o preconceito não somente limita as ações como sugere novas oportunidades de atuar em direção ao futuro. A principal contribuição teórica deste trabalho reside nas reflexões sobre os impactos positivos do preconceito nos esforços inovativos. Em seu núcleo, o discurso proposto neste texto pode ser resumido como: organizações cientes de seus preconceitos possuem maior probabilidade de apresentar um melhor desempenho.

Abstract:
Background: With the return to relative peace in Northern Ireland, available demographic data suggest that its population is growing in the sense of becoming increasingly diverse in line with the UK. However, there has been very little research on the social psychological implications of this growing diversity. One aspect of the implication of the growing diversity is prejudice. But past research had focused on Catholics and Protestants with little on the multiethnic dimension. In view of this gap, this research was directed at multiethnic prejudice in Northern Ireland. Aims: To understand the extent of multiethnic prejudice in Northern Ireland in view of the growing diversity. Research Design: The research broadly comprised four studies. The first, focused on a qualitative perspective with seven ethnic groups. It employed the simultaneous use of focus groups with sample sizes of 4-6 persons and Interpretative Phenomenological Analytical (IPA) approaches. The quantitative part had a total sample size of 417. In a cross-sectional design using a convenience sample method, Study two was an evaluation of intergroup relations based on Social Identity to understand its dimensionality in a multiethnic context. The third and fourth studies were focused on Blatant/Subtle Prejudice and Social Distance as measures of the prevalence of ethnic prejudice respectively. These studies also sought to understand their factor structures. Findings: The qualitative study uncovered feelings of dislike and mutual suspicion between ethnic groups. The study also showed that it is possible to simultaneously use Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and focus in analysing data. The quantitative analysis which employed the use of SPSS and AMOS found a three factor structure for Social Identity in a multiethnic context. In addition, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied due some of the limitation of factor analysis. There were significant differences between Catholics and Protestant on Social Identity and all the prejudice measures. There was also evidence of significant negative views between majority and minority groups in the country. Conclusion: The main implication of this research is that there is evidence of a broad divide between the ethnic groups involved in the research indicating a lack of integration. Further implications and areas for future research are suggested.

Abstract:
The purpose of my PhD is to examine one mechanism by which attachment security may lead to decreased prejudice, thus examining novel research hypotheses. Research supports the prediction that high attachment avoidance and high attachment anxiety are associated with high negativity toward outgroups (Hofstra, van Oudenhoven, & Buunk, 2005) and decreased empathy compared to individuals low in attachment avoidance or anxiety (e.g., Batson, Eklund, Chermok, Hoyt, & Ortiz, 2007). However, whereas fearful individuals characteristically use hyperactivating strategies to avoid rejection from others, dismissing individuals use deactivating strategies to avoid contact with others. Thus, it is important to assess how empathy influences the relation between attachment avoidance and prejudice, and between attachment anxiety and prejudice. I hypothesized that empathy would mediate the relation between attachment dimensions and prejudice. Specifically, I predicted that the relation between attachment avoidance and prejudice, and between attachment anxiety and prejudice, would be mediated by low empathy. Dispositional attachment security and primed attachment security were examined separately in three studies. In the Study 1 the mediating role of empathy in the relationship between dispositional attachment security and prejudice was identified. In Study 2 the mediating role of empathy on the relationship between primed attachment pattern and prejudice was confirmed, providing specificity as to which aspect of empathy is the key component through which prejudice can be reduced in attachment-avoidant individuals. Study 3 extends the findings to demonstrate that primed attachment security influences self-reported intention to discriminate and subsequent discriminatory behaviour. Combined, the findings within this thesis make valuable contributions to social psychological understanding of why variations in prejudice toward Muslims exist, and provide evidence that have important implications in future interventions aimed to reduce prejudice

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how K-12 education can reduce prejudice. Firstly, I define what I mean by prejudice and explain what my research methodology is for the study. Through a conceptual examination of existing research, including theories on why people are prejudiced and what we know about prejudice reduction from social psychology, I go on to propose four areas of individual cognitive and social development in which educational strategies can act on prejudicial thinking and lessen it. These are: - Understanding beyond the other; - Critical Thinking; - Metacognitive thought; - Empathy. I also synthesise findings into two institutional approaches that are effective. These are: - The contact hypothesis; - Specific pedagogical principles that are embedded in international education. These six areas are brought together in a multi-facetted response to the problem of prejudice. The thesis problematises the construct of prejudice reduction by grappling with its complexity through a critical account of the substantial literature on the subject. This means not only contextualising studies according to the parameters of their method but also engaging with prominent discourses in associated fields in a reflexive manner. The thesis is an original contribution to knowledge in that it builds a bridge between work on prejudice in the schools of social psychology, cognitive psychology and neurobiology and K-12 education. My study offers a framework synthesising effective classroom interventions that can be adapted and adopted in a variety of contexts to combat the central operating system of prejudice formation.

This study investigated low- and high-prejudice whites' personal standards for prejudiced behavior toward African-Americans, gays and lesbians, and Arab-Americans. Using structural equation modeling, the study examined whether feelings of moral obligation, internal motivation to respond without prejudice, and concern with acting prejudiced each mediate the relationship between egalitarianism as defined as equality of opportunity and personal standards. Because the low-prejudice groups uniformly demonstrated non-prejudiced personal standards, the proposed models could not be fit for these groups. Across the high-prejudice groups, however, results indicated that the mediating models demonstrated only fair to poor fit. Moreover, the fit of two alternative models were evaluated; a discussion of theoretical and practical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

In recent American culture, expressions of racial prejudice have become increasingly subtle and ambiguous. Given such ambiguity, whether or not prejudice is perceived by observers may be related to individual differences in the tendency to make attributions to prejudice. The present set of studies test the hypothesis that the beliefs and expectations related to a propensity to make attributions to prejudice are moderated by different information about harm and intent that have been shown in previous research to influence observers’ attributions of prejudice. Study 1 manipulated information about the harm caused by a White actor to a Black target (no harm, ambiguous harm, clear harm). Study 2 manipulated information about a White actor’s intent to racially discriminate against a Black target (no intent, ambiguous intent, clear intent). Across both studies, evidence supported the conclusion that attributions of prejudice are related to observers’ beliefs and expectations about racial prejudice when they are given ambiguous information about harm and intent. Understanding when differences in observers’ propensity to make attributions to prejudice might influence their attributions will contribute to our understanding of when expressions of prejudice are perceived, and more generally about how and when beliefs influence how individuals interpret their social world.

Abstract:
To test the generalizability of the theory of aversive prejudice in predicting discrimination against gay men, a partial replication of Dovidio and Gaertner's (2000) experiment was conducted. Two hundred and five White undergraduate students from a Midwestern university evaluated an ostensible applicant for a counseling position. The current study was a 2 (Applicant Sexual Orientation: gay, straight) x 2 (Applicant Race: Black, White) x 2 (Applicant Qualification: high, moderate) x 2 (Participant Gender) between-groups experiment. Men provided straight applicants with significantly higher qualification ratings than gay applicants. Gay applicants were perceived as less competent on leadership than straight applicants. A gay Black applicant was least likely to be recommended for the position only when he was ambiguously (moderately) qualified, compared to straight White, straight Black, and gay White applicants. Limitations, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation aimed to ascertain, in a practical theological way, how to bridge the gulf between the congregation and the AIDS community using home based care as the vehicle of change. The initial hypotheses of the research were based upon a model initially developed by World Vision in Nkhotakota, Malawi. The research question, which the study address, is as follows: 1. Can the negative attitudes, prejudices and behaviours which are held and demonstrated by many in the church towards those suffering with HIV/AIDS, be changed by using deliberate attempts to alter their perspective of this pandemic by providing accurate information, in juxtaposition with the demonstration of Christ’s love and compassion to this community? 2. In conjunction to this first question comes a second: Can the compassionate outreach of the church, as it follows Christ’s mandate to love change the perspective of those in the HIV/AIDS community so that instead of viewing the church (as a whole) as cold and unloving, their perception will change with the demonstration of such love and compassion by its membership that they begin to see the church as a source of hope and love? To describe the contextual situation in which this study takes place, the historical background concerning the church’s response to the issue of the HIV/AIDS pandemic was explored in chapter two. The third chapter discusses the cultural paradigmatic focuses, unique to the African situation, with attention to the role in the church as it seeks to comply with its mandated mission. Chapter four then examines the cultural practices found, specifically in the Malawian context, that promote the spread and transmission of the HIV/AIDS virus amongst the Chewa people and the surrounding tribes. Over and against the identified traditional practices and their interrelationship with the worldviews of the people of Malawi, chapter five focuses on the practical theological implications of the church seeing to find identity in Christ. The ramifications of the praxis process regarding this hermeneutic, in consideration with the response of the Church as it seeks to reflect the character of the God, as represented primarily by the attribute of love towards those who are suffering from being infected or affected by this disease are explored in this chapter. It deals with the theological ramifications concerning the faith community as it represents the body of Christ by providing eschatological hope to this suffering world. The remaining chapters describe the methodology and praxis process utilizing the research hypothesis developed from the Nkhotakota model. Final conclusions were then drawn in order to provide understanding as to how to obediently participate in God’s witness to the world as the faith community addresses the problem of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in very poor areas in Malawi. Although the initial optimistic goals of this research were not met as anticipated, essential discoveries that illuminate the faulty paradigms associated with critical issues such as the effects of abject poverty were exposed. Difficulties that were initially considered secondary to the main thrust of this research, whose complexities are generally misunderstood by the western paradigm came to light as the praxis process unfolded. Attempts to sidestep stark issues such as poverty, in order to address the ‘real’ issues under study served to highlight these problems as their magnitude forced their recognition and consideration. This research has exposed is the necessity for further exploration into the intricate ramifications of issues such poverty by demonstrating the unfortunate fact that for those struggling to survive at the lowest levels of Maslow’s hierarchy, the luxury of benevolent service is simply not possible. For these, there is no other issue but survival. Calling on these sufferers to act as ‘the church’ when their need is so dire is not only unrealistic, it borders on sacrilege.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis beoog om op ‘n prakties-teologiese wyse vas te stel hoe om die kloof tussen ‘n gemeente en ‘n Vigs-gemeenskap te oorbrug met tuisversorging as medium van verandering. Die aanvanklike hipoteses van die navorsing is gebaseer op ‘n model wat oorspronklik deur World Vision by Nkhotakota, Malawi, ontwikkel is. Die navorsingsvraag waarop dié studie gerig word, is die volgende: 1. Kan die negatiewe houding, vooroordele en optrede van baie kerklidmate teenoor MIV/Viglyers verander word deur die gebruik van doelgerigte pogings om hul siening van hierdie pandemie te wysig deur die verskaffing van die korrekte inligting, tesame met blyke van Christus se liefde en medelye aan hierdie gemeenskap? 2. Tesame met hierdie eerste vraag, volg ‘n tweede. Die derde hoofstuk bespreek die kulturele paradigmatiese fokusse, uniek aan toestande in Afrika. Dit gee aandag aan die rol van die kerk in sy doelwit om sy sendingmandaat uit te voer. Die res van die hoofstukke beskryf die metodologie, proses en navorsingshipotese wat ontwikkel is uit die Nkhotakota model. Die finale gevolgtrekkings spreek die probleem aan van hoe om die MIV/Vigs pandemie onder mense wat in uiters arm stedelike areas in Malawi woon, aan te spreek en ‘n Christelike getuienis te lewer. Al is die aanvanklike optimistiese doelwitte van hierdie navorsing deels bereik, is wesenlike ontdekkings gemaak wat die foutiewe paradigmas in verband met kritieke vraagstukke, soos die invloed van volslae armoede, blootgelê. Probleme wat aanvanklik sekondêr beskou is tot die hoofmikpunt van die navorsing het aan die lig gekom in die navorsingsproses. Abstract:
My dissertation draws upon ancient political philosophy (Plato and Aristotle) and 20th century hermeneutic thought (Heidegger and Gadamer) to argue that our judgment and understanding is always “situated” within a world, or horizon, shaped by the projects, practices, and traditions in which we are engaged. This means that judgment never starts from scratch. The exercise of judgment, in evaluating competing arguments in politics or law, in trying to understand a philosophical text, in deliberating about how to act in this or that circumstance, is always informed by preconceptions and commitments that we have not justified in advance. In this sense, our judgment is always “prejudiced.” But contrary to a familiar way of thinking, the prejudicial aspect of judgment is not some regrettable limitation. Certain prejudices, I argue, can actually enable good judgment rather than hinder it. The primary goal of the dissertation is to clarify the concept of prejudice and to draw out its implications for politics, ethics, and philosophy. What does it mean to reason from within the world? What room does such reasoning allow for human agency and political reform? By drawing upon Heidegger’s notion of “Being-in-the-World” and Gadamer’s notion of “horizon,” I develop the idea that our life circumstance is an intelligible perspective that informs our deliberation and judgment. Moreover, our life perspective provides the basis for a kind of situated agency. After elaborating the situated conception of understanding, I show that it is implicit in Aristotle’s notion of practical wisdom (phronesis) and in Plato’s notion of dialectic. My goal is to bring out a link that is often overlooked between their philosophy and 20th century hermeneutic thought. By reading each in light of the other, we gain a deeper understanding of what it means to reason from within the perspective of our lives.

This dissertation developed and tested a role-based framework drawing from role theory to understand how external factors contribute to the spread of bias in organizations. Using experimental social psychological methods, the twelve studies in this dissertation investigated why other people's prejudices can sometimes influence individuals' decisions and behaviors due to the demands of the decision maker role. Role theory posits that there are certain expectations associated with specific roles, and the roles that people occupy can determine their attitudes and behaviors. Across studies, participants placed in a decision-making role in charge of hiring selections accommodated the prejudices of relevant third parties in their decisions (i.e., the "third-party prejudice effect''). Specifically, consistent with the proposed model, in the studies described in Chapter 2, individuals in charge of selection decisions were significantly less likely to select a woman when a relevant third party was prejudiced against women. Chapter 3 extended this inquiry to novel, fictional groups, generalizing the third-party prejudice effect beyond the context of gender bias.

According to a role-based framework, concerns relevant to the decision maker role become highly salient in contexts of third-party prejudice, motivating those in charge of hiring selections to accommodate this prejudice in order to accomplish role-relevant goals. In particular, in the context of hiring selections, decision makers accommodate third-party prejudice without coercion because they engage in two types of considerations, focused (a) on maximizing performance (i.e.. task-focused concerns). and (b) on avoiding conflict or facilitating relations among the parties involved (i.e., interpersonal concerns). These task-focused and interpersonal concerns are relevant to the decision maker role and reflect well-established distinctions between instrumental and socioemotional dimensions of group processes. This proposed mechanism was experimentally supported. revealing that task-focused and interpersonal concerns significantly mediated the effect both in the context of gender prejudice (Chapter 2) as well as in a novel groups context (Chapter 3). Furthermore, in Chapter 2, experimentally reducing role-relevant concerns by manipulating task-focused considerations significantly reduced the accommodation of third-party prejudice against women.

In line with the notion that roles impact behavior above and beyond individual-level attitudes and beliefs, participants in two studies accommodated prejudice against women in their selections regardless of their personal endorsement of modern sexism and traditional gender stereotypes (Chapter 2). Participants similarly accommodated third-party prejudice against groups about which they knew very little, in contexts in which pre-existing biases or the endorsement of cultural stereotypes had little bearing on their selections (Chapter 3). Moreover, consistent with the proposition that roles shape behavior more strongly than social identity, participants across studies accommodated third-party prejudice in their decisions even when such prejudice was directed toward a social category in-group. A role-based framework can illuminate the institutional factors that produce social disparities, and can contribute to a growing understanding of the reasons why members of underrepresented groups sometimes appear to treat each other poorly in organizational contexts.

Social discrimination is a common experience with measurable consequences for those affected. The effects include poorer mental health and poverty, issues which are commonly addressed by human service professionals. People who are transgender are particular targets of discrimination and, as such, find themselves in need of human service assistance at levels disproportionate to the larger population. Research from social psychology suggests that intergroup contact reduces prejudice. This quasi-experiment explored the effect a transgender speaker, followed by informal social interaction, had on measures of transgender prejudice in a sample of college students

O cloreto de tributilestanho (TBT) é um poluente organometálico que é utilizado como um biocida em tintas antivegetativas. O TBT induz vários efeitos tóxicos e de desregulação endócrina. No entanto, estudos que avaliaram os efeitos do TBT na função renal são raros. Este estudo demonstra que a exposição TBT pode causar prejuízos a função renal, bem como o desenvolvimento de anormalidades morfofisiológicas nos rins de mamíferos. Nós utilizamos ratas Wistar que foram tratadas com TBT para posterior avaliação da morfofisiologia renal. Foi verificado neste tratamento anormalidades morfofisiológicas como a diminuição da taxa de filtração glomerular e o aumento dos níveis de proteinúria. Além disso, houve um aumento da inflamação, deposição de colágeno e maior expressão da proteína (α-SMA) foram observados nos rins das ratas TBT. Também foi verificado um desequilíbrio redox celular e apoptose no tecido renal dos animais tratados. As ratas TBT demonstraram redução dos níveis de estrogénio no soro e redução da expressão da proteína receptora de estrogênio (ERα). Dessa forma, estes dados fornecem evidência in vivo em que o TBT é tóxico para a função renal, e que esses efeitos podem estar associados com complicações renais histopatológicas. Previous research suggests that women without children are perceived negatively by others and experience adverse outcomes in various settings. This study investigated psychosocial justifications of prejudice toward childfree women. Participants (N = 891) completed measures of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), the internal (IMS-S) and external (EMS-S) motivations to respond without sexism, and prejudice toward childfree women (i.e., perceived disadvantages of being childfree, evaluations of childfree women, and perceptions of childfree women’s warmth). Most participants also completed one or more justification measures of hostile sexism (HS), benevolent sexism (BS), gender-specific system justification (GSSJ), and femininity ideology. Results indicated that greater RWA was directly associated with greater perceived childfree disadvantages and coldness in childfree women. Additionally, greater IMS-S was directly associated with fewer perceived disadvantages, favorable evaluations, and greater perceived warmth; and greater EMS-S was directly associated with more negative evaluations and perceived coldness. Greater BS and GSSJ were also associated with greater disadvantages. Furthermore, femininity ideology was directly associated with greater disadvantages, unfavorable evaluations, and perceived coldness. In mediational analyses, IMS-S and EMS-S were associated with greater disadvantages, unfavorable evaluations, and perceived coldness indirectly through femininity ideology. EMS-S was also associated with greater disadvantages and unfavorable evaluations indirectly through BS. This study makes a unique contribution to the literature on attitudes toward childfree women by not only replicating that childfree prejudice persists, but also documenting why it potentially exists. Additionally, by identifying several psychosocial constructs that may justify childfree prejudice, this study suggests future research and possible interventions to reduce childfree prejudice.

Sexism tends to be a culturally accepted form of prejudice. I propose the relatively strong trivialization of societal sexism stems from the unique benefits that men receive from the gender status hierarchy, compared to other types of group-based hierarchies. Three studies examined why people, men in particular, trivialize or justify gender bias in relation to other types of group-based biases. Study 1 was a correlational study that examined whether participants downplay the existence and social harm of gender bias in relation to racial, religious, and sexual orientation bias, moderated by participant gender. Participants reported stronger trivialization and denial of gender bias, compared to other three types of bias. Study 2 experimentally tested whether White men’s justifications for gender bias, in relation to racial bias, stems from the dyadic benefits men receive in interpersonal relationships with women. White men high in proximal benefits reported stronger essentialist justifications in the gender bias, compared to the racial bias condition. Study 3 examined whether heterosexual men, compared to heterosexual women and gay men, endorse stronger justifications for gender bias, compared to sexual orientation bias. Heterosexual men endorsed stronger essentialist justifications in the gender bias, compared to the sexual orientation bias condition. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Research on prejudice against older workers often tacitly subscribes to outdated attitude theory and rarely attempts to examine methodological questions about the effect of measurement strategy on results. This thesis compared empirically the validity of the tripartite and unitary models of attitudes in relation to prejudice towards (a) older teachers, and (b) the employment of older teachers. In addition, two alternative measurement strategies for assessing stereotypes of older teachers were compared (a 15-item rating scale versus a free-response measure). A postal questionnaire survey was conducted on a random sample of members of the National Union of Teachers (n=285) in May 2008. Two equivalent questionnaire versions were constructed that differed only with respect to the measurement strategy for assessing stereotypical beliefs of older teachers (aged 50+). The validity of the tripartite theory of attitudes was tested using hierarchical regression analyses that examined the ability to predict reported attitudes towards older teachers and the employment of older teacher on the basis of (a) stereotypical beliefs of the target group alone, and (b) a combination of stereotypical beliefs, and affective and behavioural associates of the target group. Prediction of attitudes was significantly improved above the level afforded by stereotypical beliefs alone by adding both affective and behavioural information to the regression model, supporting the validity of the tripartite model of attitudes. Measurement strategy was found to have a significant effect on the positivity of stereotypical beliefs elicited (r = -0.515), with the average response valence on the stereotypical beliefs rating scale being significantly less positive than the average response valence on the free-response measure. The content of the rating-scale measure was also found not to be representative of naturally elicited stereotype categories. The theoretical and methodological implications for attitude research in organisations were discussed.

The purpose of the present stud is to focus on applying two theoretical models, the justification-suppression model and the role congruity theory, to age discrimination in selection occupational decision-making. Participants from varying age demographics evaluated either stereotype-confirming or stereotype-disconfirming Facebook interests of candidates who are applying for a fictitious job opening. The results supported the role congruity theory in that candidates were rated lower on likability ratings when their Facebook interests were congruent with the stereotypical interests of the candidates’ respective age groups. However, there were no significant differences supporting the justification-suppression model in that perceptions of candidates did not differ in hirability ratings, regardless of their observable Facebook interests. However, the hirability ratings overall decreased after participants viewed Facebook profiles, regardless of the congruence of interests to their stereotypical interests. These results suggest that the presence of Facebook profiles as well as displaying atypical interests regarding respective age groups can result in negative perceptions of likeability or hirability ratings.

Através de conceitos oriundos da Psicologia Social, esta tese visa proceder a uma investigação exploratória deste tipo específico de preconceito e sua correlação com sintomas clínicos tais como depressão e suicídio, transtornos alimentares, abuso de álcool e drogas, comportamentos sexuais de risco, violência doméstica, e a busca por terapias de conversão da homossexualidade. Com este intuito, realizamos entrevistas em profundidade com homossexuais masculinos de classe média e moradores da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, avaliadas através da metodologia de análise do discurso. Dentre os resultados obtidos citamos as semelhanças encontradas entre os achados citados pelas bibliografias norte-americanas e européias sobre preconceito sexual internalizado e os dados colhidos entre nossos entrevistados brasileiros, principalmente no que diz respeito a depressão, dificuldades na conjugalidade homossexual (e.g. violência doméstica), experiências com preconceito e discriminação, e obstáculos similares no processo de aquisição de uma identidade gay positiva.
Despite the fact that in the last two decades we have witnessed the emergence of a series of studies on homosexuality, little research has been produced on the subject of internalized prejudice and its relationship to gay identity. Using Social Psychological concepts, this thesis is an exploratory investigation of this specific type of prejudice and its correlation with clinical symptoms such as depression and suicide, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, high risk sexual behavior, domestic violence, and the search for conversion therapies. With this objective, we made in-depth interviews with male homosexuals that live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the material obtained being later examined using a discourse analysis methodology. Among our results we mention that North-American, European and Brazilian male homosexuals seem to experience internalized prejudice in a similar way, particularly with respect to depression, difficulties in gay male couples (domestic violence), experiences with prejudice and discrimination, and comparable obstacles in the process of acquiring a positive gay identity.

Abstract:
Options and possibilities for lesbian parents have changed fundamentally since the turn of the millennium. A legal change in 2003 enabled a same-sex couple  to share legal parenthood of the same child. An additional legal change, in 2005, gave lesbian couples access to fertility treatment within public healthcare in Sweden. The present thesis focuses on families where two women share legal parenthood of their children. It aims to provide knowledge about lesbian parenting couples and their children, and to focus on the interplay between family members within lesbian families, and between family members and their surroundings. Furthermore, the thesis aims to visualize and analyse notions of heteronormativity and homonormativity in contemporary Sweden. The thesis draws on interviews with 118 parents in 61 families, and 12 children in 11 families. The participants’ stories, descriptions, reflections and discourses have been analysed using discursive psychology and thematic analysis. The thesis includes five empirical papers. Paper I focuses on encounters with healthcare professionals prior to and during pregnancy, at childbirth and during the early stages of parenthood. Paper II deals with the participants’ experiences of second-parent adoption processes. Paper III focuses on equality in parenting relations. Paper IV focuses on encounters with fertility clinics within public healthcare. Paper V highlights the children’s reflections and shows how the children talk about fathers and donors.
För lesbiska par har förutsättningarna för föräldraskap förändrats i grunden sedan millennieskiftet. År 2003 möjliggjorde en lagändring att ett barn kan ha två rättsliga föräldrar av samma kön. Ytterligare en lagändring öppnade år 2005 möjligheten för lesbiska par att få barn genom assisterad befruktning inom svensk sjukvård. I avhandlingen fokuseras familjer där två kvinnor delar det rättsliga föräldraskapet om sina gemensamma barn. Studien syftar till att bredda kunskaper om lesbiska familjeliv och fokuserar samspelet mellan familjemedlemmar såväl som samspelet mellan familjen och dess omgivning. Vidare syftar studien till att synliggöra och analysera uttryck för heteronormativitet och homonormativitet i dagens Sverige. Studien bygger på intervjuer med 118 föräldrar i 61 familjer och 12 barn i 11 familjer. Deltagarnas berättelser, beskrivningar, reflektioner och diskurser analyseras med diskursiv psykologi och tematisk analys. Avhandlingen består av fem empiriska artiklar och en kappa. I Artikel I analyseras föräldrarnas berättelser om att möta sjukvården i samband med graviditet och förlossning. Artikel II belyser deltagarnas berättelser om att genomgå en närståendeadoption. I Artikel III fokuseras hur föräldrarna pratar om jämställdhet i sina föräldraroller. Artikel IV analyserar intervjuer med föräldrar som vänt sig till svensk sjukvård för fertilitetsbehandling. I Artikel V, är det barnen som står i fokus. Studien bygger på intervjuer med tolv barn som var mellan 5 och 8 år gamla och växte upp i familjer med två mammor. I artikeln analyseras barnens beskrivningar av pappor och spermadonatorer.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the concept of socialisation through the experiences of nurse educators within a United Kingdom context in one higher education institution in the Northwest of England. Built upon the assumption that nurse educators‘ practices and dispositions are shaped and affected by the sociocultural field in which they occur, attention is paid to identifying these influences reflected through an understanding of their curriculum practices. A micro-ethnographic philosophy is adopted where semi-structured interviews are the key data source from a volunteer group of twenty nurse educators‘ informant accounts, inter-woven with observations and my reflections as a nurse educator, and therefore written in the first person. As I also claim a pertinent professional cultural heritage all data are collected and analysed from an insider-researcher position. Pierre Bourdieu‘s relational concepts of field, capital and habitus are applied as a template through which the accounts of nurse educators are filtered and interpreted. In this thesis I will argue that nurse educators experience difficult transitions in and between the fields in which they practise and that their dominant, but hidden, values contribute to their perceived marginalisation within the academic community and field of higher education. Nurse educators appear to adopt practices that reflect their practitioner habitus which contradicts the popular perspectives of academic roles and identity, referred to as an academic habitus. This negatively affects the development of academic identity and contributes to difficulties experienced in accruing academic capital. Specifically, curriculum practices are affected by the hegemonic values of nurse educators where practice-bred values conflict with academic world values.

Investigated in this study was whether a university education course that covers the topics of diversity and cultural responsiveness would change teacher candidates\' existing prejudicial attitudes.  The major variables reported in this study were exposure to diversity coursework which served as the independent variable and teacher candidates\' prejudicial attitudes, which served as the dependent variable. Using the Yoder-Hartman Survey of Beliefs Scale, three research questions were addressed: (a) Are there differences in prejudice level between preservice teachers who have taken a diversity course and those who have not taken a diversity course? (b) Are there differences in prejudice level in preservice teachers before and after taking a diversity course? and (c) Do preservice teachers who have taken a diversity course and those who have not taken a diversity course display different pre/post levels of assessed prejudice? No differences were found between students who had taken a diversity course and those who had not. The current study suggests that one diversity course is not sufficient to have a significant effect on prejudice reduction among preservice teachers. Analyses of the current study results suggest that the coursework designed to reduce prejudicial attitudes was ineffective. Continued investigation will be required to: (1) refine and develop a program that will reduce prejudicial attitudes among teacher candidates and (2) refine and develop measures of prejudice reduction.

In this thesis, I have examined the novel, Pride and Prejudice in the twenty-first century. As a lecturer of English literature I have found that many students are reluctant to engage with this novel because of their pre-conceived idea s of the novel' s trivial storyline and their assumptions about the writer. In light of this reluctance this thesis explores many of the issues related to Pride and Prejudice which both correspond to and reject student's conceptions of the novel. My methodology was to use various sources in order to find perceptions of it throughout its nearly two hundred years of existence. For this I used sources such as Todd's, Jane Austen in Context, Copeland and McMaster's, The Cambridge Companion to Jane Austen also two volumes of Littlewood' s, Jane Austen Critical Assessments among others. In the process of this investigation I became aware that from historical responses to this novel we ca n see a parallel with many readers in the twenty-first century. In this regard, I consider certain literary theories to define the difference between the story and the plot of novels which also helps to identify the different types of readers . Following this I explore how Jane Austen uses both story and plot in the novel to entertain her readers while also fulfilling her own literary needs. I then explore many of the literary devices which form a large part of most lectures on this novel. Because there is a discrepancy between the different readers of Pride and Prejudice it becomes important for students to understand why this novel is included in their curriculum. This then falls to the literary devices which Austen uses to comment on her own social world. As an aid to this, I would suggest that one can use the films to highlight the literary devices . Lecturers and students can use visual media as an addition to their engagement with this novel. Viewing the films can reveal why they can never replace the reading of the novels and for this reason students are encouraged to evaluate the films in relation to their reactions to the novel and its felicitous storyline.
