Full textThe Lassithi plateau, known in antiquity as the birthplace of Zeus, represents a unique agriculture-based socio-ecological system within the Mediterranean context, with the history of the settlement dating back to the Neolithic period (9ka BP). Once occupied by a shallow lake, this karstic depression (polje) has been used by the local population through time for timber production, herding and, more recently, irrigated agriculture. The study of the long-term evolution of this rural community is proposed to highlight in an historical perspective the introduction, functioning and shortcomings of one of the most impressive pre-industrial “renewable Aeolian

Full textThe present research investigates the history of the house of correction from an educational history perspective. More specifically, the study focuses on an analysis of the case of the Discolato of Bologna, making a comparison with other analogous institutions that came about in the two sample cities of Milan and Rome in an Italian context, and more broadly, examples of the house of correction in England in a more international context. The object of the research is focused on the relationship between deviance and internment, from a pedagogical perspective. To this end, this study aims to evidence not only the educational methods employed in these institutions but also the principles and goals that these educational methods aimed to foster and achieve. Furthermore, the present research analyses both the rules and regulations that formed the backbone of such corrective institutions, as well as the daily functioning and organization of imprisonment. In analysis of the correctional institution in Bologna, a wide range of documents from the Archivio Storico Provinciale di Bologna were consulted, thus enabling the operationalisation of a quantitative study of 1105 prisoners which gave invaluable insights into the principal demographic and social characteristics of the people interned in the Discolato. The interpretation of a variety of sources also facilitated the creation of a qualitative survey in an attempt to reconstruct the life stories of individual inmates. The present research paints a complex picture of the houses of correction. Over the course of centuries, and especially in the various realities examined in the study, they have taken on different characteristics and peculiarities. Their ineffectiveness was the main reason for their final closure, as it became increasingly evident that translating the theoretical prescriptions of regulations and statutes into practice was an extremely difficult task.

Full textThis work presents a comparative study of the main characters of insurance terminology in Italian and French language. The special purpose of language requires, fast and accurate communication for a limited group of experts who prefers a language that conveys information clear at an international level. The terminology is, therefore, the encyclopaedic knowledge of a specialized discipline, and offers the possibility to investigate and explore the different aspects of the specialized area. For our work, we have summarized in three different moments the insurance practice: 1. the history and the origins of insurance terminology; 2. description of the sources of insurance matters and analysis of dominant text types; 3. terminology studies applied to translation practice, with a review of sources of specialized lexicography. Finally, the work will be attached a descriptive glossary of insurance matters, with the aim to give a reference tool for the public and for translators.

Full textThe present thesis analyses the reception of the thought of Origen of Alexandria (c. 184-c. 253) in Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736). Its particular focus is on Origen's conception of freedom and the theological doctrines related to it. The goal of this thesis is to uncover, through Le Clerc's use of Origen, some of the argumentative practices and the intellectual dynamics of the time, in particular in religious, especially inter-confessional, debates. This thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part has mainly an introductory character and looks at the epistemological assumptions of Le Clerc and his relationship with intellectual and religious authorities of the past. The second part reviews the various ways in which Le Clerc quoted, referred to or otherwise made use of the thought or the name of Origen in his vast production. This part provides a first result in that it frames, in general, Le Clerc's reception of Origen. This step is, at the same time, also preparatory for the material contained in part three. In the third part, only the material is considered which is strictly related to Origen's idea of freedom and the related theological doctrines of original sin, grace/predestination, and the problem of evil. The result of this analysis, as it appears form the examination of argumentative practices in the previous sections, is that Le Clerc was no simple "Origenist" but neither was he was fully uncommitted to the Origenian cause. A full commitment to Origen, despite this strong sympathy, was still hindered by Le Clerc's epistemological, scriptural and theological outlook.
