Abstract:
Este trabalho tece considerações sobre o acontecimento enunciativo ‘Projeto Pesquisa Escola Verde’ (PPEV), desenvolvido no espaço urbano da cidade de Sinop, região norte do Estado de Mato Grosso, na perspectiva teórica e metodológica da Semântica do Acontecimento. Objetiva apresentar a nomeação, a referência e a designação da formulação do nome do projeto, bem como o funcionamento enunciativo de Educação Ambiental e desenvolvimento sustentável no objeto pesquisado, através de entrevistas realizadas com os idealizadores do PPEV. O resultado deste trabalho apresenta que houve a reescrituração do projeto que possibilitou novas designações e, o funcionamento de determinadas palavras escritas no projeto, aparecem como termos de substituibilidade para a palavra ‘verde’, o que leva a considerar os espaços de enunciação e o memorável.

Abstract:
Abstract. In a 3.5-year long study, the long-term performance of a mobile, solar absorption Bruker EM27/SUN spectrometer, used for greenhouse gas observations, is checked with respect to a co-located reference Bruker IFS 125HR spectrometer, which is part of the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). We find that the EM27/SUN is stable on timescales of several years; the drift per year between the EM27/SUN and the official TCCON product is 0.02 ppmv for XCO2 and 0.9 ppbv for XCH4, which is within the 1σ precision of the comparison, 0.6 ppmv for XCO2 and 4.3 ppbv for XCH4. The bias between the two data sets is 3.9 ppmv for XCO2 and 13.0 ppbv for XCH4. In order to avoid sensitivity-dependent artifacts, the EM27/SUN is also compared to a truncated IFS 125HR data set derived from full-resolution TCCON interferograms. The drift is 0.02 ppmv for XCO2 and 0.2 ppbv for XCH4 per year, with 1σ precisions of 0.4 ppmv for XCO2 and 1.4 ppbv for XCH4, respectively. The bias between the two data sets is 0.6 ppmv for XCO2 and 0.5 ppbv for XCH4. With the presented long-term stability, the EM27/SUN qualifies as an useful supplement to the existing TCCON network in remote areas. To achieve consistent performance, such an extension requires careful testing of any spectrometers involved by application of common quality assurance measures. One major aim of the COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network (COCCON) infrastructure is to provide these services to all EM27/SUN operators. In the framework of COCCON development, the performance of an ensemble of 30 EM27/SUN spectrometers was tested and found to be very uniform, enhanced by the centralized inspection performed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology prior to deployment. Taking into account measured instrumental line shape parameters for each spectrometer, the resulting average bias across the ensemble with respect to the reference EM27/SUN used in the long-term study in XCO2 is 0.20 ppmv, while it is 0.8 ppbv for XCH4. The average standard deviation of the ensemble is 0.13 ppmv for XCO2 and 0.6 ppbv for XCH4. In addition to the robust metric based on absolute differences, we calculate the standard deviation among the empirical calibration factors. The resulting 2σ uncertainty is 0.6 ppmv for XCO2 and 2.2 ppbv for XCH4. As indicated by the executed long-term study on one device presented here, the remaining empirical calibration factor deduced for each individual instrument can be assumed constant over time. Therefore the application of these empirical factors is expected to further improve the EM27/SUN network conformity beyond the scatter among the empirical calibration factors reported above.

Abstract:
Ants were surveyed in three habitats at Mount St. Helens in 2008. The area most impacted by the 1980 eruption is the Pumice Plain. Less impacted is the Blowdown Zone where trees were toppled due to the blast. Two habitats were surveyed in the Pumice Plain varying in vegetation density (Pumice Plain Low-Vegetation (PPLV) and Pumice Plain High-Vegetation (PPHV)), and one habitat was surveyed in the Blowdown Zone (BDZ). Ten ant species were collected with the most species collected from the BDZ habitat and the least from the PPLV habitat. Ant abundance was higher at the BDZ and PPHV habitats than at the PPLV habitat. Ant biodiversity was highest at the BDZ habitat than at the PPHV and PPLV habitats. Significant correlations between ant community parameters and plant community parameters were also found. Few plants in the PPLV habitat may contribute to the lack of ants. High ant species richness at the BDZ habitat may be due to complex plant architecture. Results from this study suggest that ants are important focal species in tracking biotic recovery following disturbances.

Abstract:
Near-surface observations of air mixing ratios of CH4, CO2, CO, benzene, and δ13C–СH4 at the IAP-RAS site in Moscow for years 2018–2020 are analyzed to describe typical interannual, seasonal, and diurnal variations. The highest mixing ratios of CH4, CO2, and CO (above 2.2, 430, and 0.2 ppmv, respectively) are mostly observed in winter as a result of the seasonal maxima in the emissions of these gases from motor transport and energy sectors and the slow removal of the emissions from the near-surface air due to suppressed turbulent vertical mixing in the cold season. The highest impact of local and distant microbial emissions on the CН4 mixing ratios is observed in summer, as follows from the low δ13C–СH4 values from –50 to –60‰. The highest increase in the mixing ratios of all the measured species is associated with air transport from the industrial area located at the east – southeast from the site. The estimated emission ratios CH4/benzene = = 0.52–0.54 ppmv/ppbv, СH4/СО = 0.56–0.75 ppmv/ppmv, СО2/benzene = 77–93 ppmv/ppbv, СО2/СО = = 81–131 ppmv/ppmv, СО/benzene = 0.65–1.11 ppmv/ppbv show the prevailing contribution of emissions from motor transport and energy sectors to the content of trace gases in the near-surface air in Moscow and are consistent with other similar estimates published on the basis of observations in large cities.

Abstract:
The present study analyses the continuous in-situ observations of surface ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOX) conducted in an urban location, Bengaluru, India, during the year 2019 (January to December). The seasonal concentration of O3 fluctuated with the highest concentrations in the summer (39.6 ppbv) and winter (40.4 ppbv) and the lowest concentrations during the monsoon (16.8 ppbv). The seasonal mixing ratio of CO showed the highest value in post-monsoon (1.71 ppmv) and lowest during monsoon (0.79 ppmv). The seasonal trend of NOX showed highest in winter (56.8 ppbv) and lowest in monsoon (22.5 ppbv). The monthly mixing ratios of O3, CO, and NOX showed distinct variability, which may be attributed to changing anthropogenic activities, planetary boundary layer processes, and local meteorology. O3 was significantly related to temperature but inversely associated with relative humidity and wind speed. The association between CO, NOX with relative humidity, temperature, wind speed showed discrete results. The (dO3/dt) in the morning and evening duration were about 5.0 ppbv/h and -4.1 ppbv/h respectively.

Abstract:
Abstract. Accurate and consistent monitoring of anthropogenic combustion is imperative because of its significant health and environmental impacts, especially at city-to-regional scale. Here, we assess the performance of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) global prediction system using measurements from aircraft, ground sites, and ships during the Korea-United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) field study in May to June 2016. Our evaluation focuses on CAMS CO and CO2 analyses as well as two higher-resolution forecasts (16 and 9 km horizontal resolution) to assess their capability in predicting combustion signatures over east Asia. Our results show a slight overestimation of CAMS CO2 with a mean bias against airborne CO2 measurements of 2.2, 0.7, and 0.3 ppmv for 16 and 9 km CO2 forecasts, and analyses, respectively. The positive CO2 mean bias in the 16 km forecast appears to be consistent across the vertical profile of the measurements. In contrast, we find a moderate underestimation of CAMS CO with an overall bias against airborne CO measurements of −19.2 (16 km), −16.7 (9 km), and −20.7 ppbv (analysis). This negative CO mean bias is mostly seen below 750 hPa for all three forecast/analysis configurations. Despite these biases, CAMS shows a remarkable agreement with observed enhancement ratios of CO with CO2 over the Seoul metropolitan area and over the West (Yellow) Sea, where east Asian outflows were sampled during the study period. More efficient combustion is observed over Seoul (dCO/dCO2=9 ppbv ppmv−1) compared to the West Sea (dCO/dCO2=28 ppbv ppmv−1). This “combustion signature contrast” is consistent with previous studies in these two regions. CAMS captured this difference in enhancement ratios (Seoul: 8–12 ppbv ppmv−1, the West Sea: ∼30 ppbv ppmv−1) regardless of forecast/analysis configurations. The correlation of CAMS CO bias with CO2 bias is relatively high over these two regions (Seoul: 0.64–0.90, the West Sea: ∼0.80) suggesting that the contrast captured by CAMS may be dominated by anthropogenic emission ratios used in CAMS. However, CAMS shows poorer performance in terms of capturing local-to-urban CO and CO2 variability. Along with measurements at ground sites over the Korean Peninsula, CAMS produces too high CO and CO2 concentrations at the surface with steeper vertical gradients (∼0.4 ppmv hPa−1 for CO2 and 3.5 ppbv hPa−1 for CO) in the morning samples than observed (∼0.25 ppmv hPa−1 for CO2 and 1.7 ppbv hPa−1 for CO), suggesting weaker boundary layer mixing in the model. Lastly, we find that the combination of CO analyses (i.e., improved initial condition) and use of finer resolution (9 km vs. 16 km) generally produces better forecasts.

ABSTRACTEdible coating and film from chitosan and incorporating it with the action of ZnONPs on active phenol compounds from extracts of pomegranate peel (PPE). The physical and chemical properties of edible films made with zinc oxide ZnONPs and active phenol compounds extracted from pomegranate peel (PPE) were studied. Adding ZnONPs with active phenol compounds from extracted pomegranate peel (PPE) to chitosan films can provide safe edible films, decrease microbial growth, consequently, prolong the shelf life of pomegranates, and improve the physiochemical stability of the pomegranate. The substances used in this experiment were film with a (A) extract of pomegranate peels (PPE), 5% (0.1%), (B)ZnONPs 1% (0.02%), (C) ZnONPs 2% (0.04%), (D) ZnONPs 3% (0.06%), (E) ZnONPs 1%/PPE1% (0.02%), (F) ZnONPs 2%/PPE2% (0.04%), (G) ZnONPs 3%/PPE3% (0.06%) wt% of chitosan on quality attributes and prolonging the shelf life of pomegranates were stored in edible film containers at 2 °C and 90–95% relative humidity for 20 days. The treatments of (G) ZnONPs 3%/PPE3% (0.06%) loaded on chitosan as well as chitosan and (D) ZnONPs 3% (0.06%) reduced the weight loss, had excellent microbial counts until 20 days of storage, and recorded the lowest microbial count and mold & yeast colonies. Other chemical properties studied included total soluble solids content, acidity, anthocyanin content, firmness, and ascorbic acid. Results indicated that ZnONPs 3%/PPE3% (0.06%) loaded on chitosan or ZnONPs 3% (0.06%) were the best treatments for preserving pomegranate arils. It was found that the best measurements were that the film-forming nano emulsion solutions decreased by E = 110 nm and B = 134 nm. Nano-edibles followed treatment, at F% 188.7 nm, compared to nano-edible films, which were A0% 1312 nm. Abstract:
Abstract. High-resolution CH4 and CO2 measurements were made onboard the FAAM BAe 146 UK atmospheric research aircraft during a number of field campaigns. The system was based on an infrared spectrometer using the cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy technique. Correction functions to convert the mole fractions retrieved from the spectroscopy to dry air mole fractions were derived using laboratory experiments and over a 3 month period showed good stability. Long-term performance of the system was monitored using WMO traceable calibration gases. During the first year of operation (29 flights) analysis of the system's in-flight calibrations suggest that its measurements are accurate to −0.07 ppbv (1 σ precision at 1 Hz = 2.48 ppbv) for CH4 and −0.06 ppmv (1 σ precision at 1 Hz = 0.66 ppmv) for CO2. The system was found to be very robust, no major motion or altitude dependency could be detected in the measurements. An inter-comparison between whole air samples that were analysed post-flight for CH4 and CO2 by cavity ring down spectroscopy showed a mean difference between the two techniques of −2.4 ppbv (1 σ = 2.3 ppbv) for CH4 and −0.22 ppmv (1 σ = 0.45 ppmv) for CO2. In September 2012, the system was used to sample biomass burning plumes in Brazil as part of the SAMBBA project (South American biomass burning analysis). From these and simultaneous CO measurements, emission factors for savannah fires were calculated. These were found to be 2.2 ± 0.2 g (kg dry matter)−1 for CH4 and 1710 ± 171 g (kg dry matter)−1 for CO2, which are in excellent agreement with previous estimates in the literature.

Abstract:
Les mécanismes pathogéniques impliqués dans les phases initiales de l'infection par le SARS-CoV-2 restent mal compris au niveau pulmonaire, en dépit d'une abondante activité de recherche depuis l'émergence de la pandémie COVID-19. Des travaux conduits sur des modèles de culture de cellules humaines isolées, d'explants, d'organoïdes ou de lung-on-a-chip ont donné des résultats discordants quant aux cibles initiales pulmonaires principales du virus et à la réponse innée induite. Dans ce travail de thèse, j'ai évalué un modèle original d'étude des premières étapes de l'infection virale qui consiste à infecter un poumon humain entier maintenu vivant ex vivo selon une technique utilisée couramment en transplantation pulmonaire, permettant ainsi d'étudier l'infection dans des conditions respectant les interactions spatiales. Cette technique (perfusion pulmonaire ex vivo, PPEV) consiste à ventiler et perfuser des poumons pendant quelques heures et conduit à évaluer et réhabiliter des poumons dits marginaux. Par la technique de RNA-seq sur cellule unique, nous avons découvert que le poumon entier maintenu sous PPEV sans virus présente un programme d'activation génique particulier que nous avons exploré dans un premier volet de la thèse. Ainsi nous avons mis en évidence, que la PPEV en elle-même induit une réponse inflammatoire qui varie en fonction du temps et des types cellulaires. Cette réponse s'accompagne d'une signature génique indiquant une réduction de la signalisation du cytosquelette dans les cellules épithéliales alvéolaires de type 2 et les cellules endothéliales, ainsi qu'une réduction de la migration et de l'activation des lymphocytes et cellules dendritiques. Ce travail révèle pour la première fois la réponse biologique à la PPEV en fonction des types cellulaires, potentiellement associée à des effets sur les suites cliniques. Dans un second temps, nous avons infecté sous PPEV des poumons avec différents isolats viraux et réalisé des analyses de RNA-seq sur cellule unique qui ont révélé que les macrophages alvéolaires (AMs) et ceux dérivés des monocytes (MoMacs) sont les cibles principales du virus. Par contre, les cellules épithéliales et les sous-populations de monocytes pulmonaires ne sont pas significativement associées au virus. Nous avons étudié la réponse de différents types de monocytes/macrophages in vitro après dissociation de tissus pulmonaire humain, tri en cytométrie puis culture avec le virus. Nous avons révélé des réponses spécifiques inflammatoires en fonction des populations cellulaires, des souches virales et des doses, les cellules MoMacs étant les plus inflammatoires en réponse au virus. Ces résultats originaux mettent en évidence le rôle des macrophages à l'étape initiale de l'infection et suggèrent que leur réponse pourrait conditionner l'apparition des lésions ultérieures associées à la gravité en fonction de la composition initiale alvéolaire en sous populations de monocytes/macrophages, de la souche virale et de la dose. Dans un projet parallèle, j'ai étudié une méthode visant à réduire cette inflammation, sur poumon de porc, en procédant à une dialyse du perfusat pour éliminer les déchets métaboliques accumulés. Nous avons montré que la dialyse ne réduit pas l'inflammation, mais l'augmente plutôt, après 6 ou 12 heures.Au total, ce projet de thèse a montré les atouts et les limites d'un modèle d'infection virale de poumon entier maintenu ex vivo. Il a mis en lumière l'implication des sous-populations de monocytes/macrophages dans les premières étapes de l'infection par le SARS-CoV-2. The pathogenic mechanisms of the initial phase of the SARS-CoV-2 infection remain poorly understood at the pulmonary level, despite strong research efforts since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemics. Studies conducted with various models, including isolated human cell cultures, explants, organoids or lung-on-a-chip systems have generated conflicting results concerning the primary pulmonary targets of the virus and the induced innate immune responses.In my thesis, I evaluated an original model for studying the early stages of viral infection. This model involves the infection of a whole lung that is maintained ex vivo with a technique used in lung transplantation, allowing the study of infection under conditions that preserve spatial interactions. This technique (ex-vivo lung perfusion, EVLP) involves ventilating and perfusing lungs for several hours and has the potential to evaluate and rehabilitate marginal lungs. We conducted single-cell RNA-seq analyses and we discovered that the whole lung maintained under EVLP without the virus displayed a specific gene activation program, which we analyzed in the first part of my thesis. We found that EVLP in itself induced an inflammatory response that varied over time and across cell types. This response was accompanied by gene signatures indicating reduced signaling of cytoskeleton in alveolar type 2 epithelial cells and endothelial cells, as well as reduced cell migration and activation of lymphocytes and dendritic cells. This work reveals, for the first time, the biological responses to EVLP based on cell types that may be related to the clinical outcomes. In the second part of my thesis, we infected lungs under EVLP with different viral isolates and conducted single-cell RNA-seq analyses. These analyses revealed that alveolar macrophages (AMs) and monocyte-derived macrophages (MoMacs) are the primary targets of the virus. Epithelial cells and pulmonary monocyte subpopulations were not significantly associated with the virus. We studied the response of the monocyte/macrophage populations in vitro after dissociation of human lung tissue, flow cytometry sorting and culture with the virus. We observed specific inflammatory responses depending on cell subsets, viral strain and doses, with MoMacs being the most inflammatory. Our original work reveals the role of monocyte/macrophage subsets in the initial phases of the SARS-CoV-2 infection and suggests that the initial response of alveolar monocyte/macrophages will drive the subsequent development of lung injuries, depending on the composition in AMs and MoMacs, the viral strain and doses. In a parallel project, we investigated the effects of a method aimed at reducing the inflammation during EVLP, on porcine lung, by performing a dialysis of the perfusate to remove accumulated metabolic wastes. However, our findings showed that dialysis did not reduce inflammation; rather, it increased inflammation after 6 or 12 hours.Overall, this thesis project has demonstrated the strengths and limitations of a whole lung viral infection model maintained ex-vivo. It has highlighted the involvement of monocyte/macrophage subpopulations in the initial step of SARS-CoV-2 infection and has also contributed to a better understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the ex vivo lung maintenance technique, which will be useful for improving lung transplantation procedures

Forest fires has become an increasing threat all over the world. Pollution and rising greenhouse gases has led to an ever increase in global temperatures. Sweden has previously been spared from larger fires, but in the past few year it has been been made clear that these climate changes will affect the number and intensity of forest fires.  In this project I have investigated how forest fires work and how the process of  extinguishing them looks today. With a focus on the personal equipment I have looked into how to improve the working environment and the safety for fire-fighters. Using the design process this problem is tackled from a holistic point of view, looking at both the users and context. The solutions presented in this project is a professional safety product called “Phoenix. PPe Wildfire respirator”. A lightweight portable oxygen harness with an attached emergency mask.

O presente trabalho, intitulado “Contribuições à implementação do PPEC: superando dualidades”, foi desenvolvido no Mestrado Profissional em Gestão e Avaliação da Educação Pública da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, com o objetivo de apresentar propostas para o aprimoramento da implementação do PPEC (Projeto de Pesquisa de Enriquecimento Curricular), em uma Escola Técnica Estadual no Estado do Espírito Santo, tendo em vista a importância e a necessidade de avaliação dessa política pública, contribuindo para o seu aprimoramento. Os sujeitos envolvidos foram os professores e alunos do CEET Vasco Coutinho, que participaram desta pesquisa por meio de entrevista semiestruturada para os professores e questionários para os alunos. A realização deste estudo foi estruturada em duas categorias centrais: trabalho como princípio educativo, fundamentado nos autores, Gaudêncio Frigotto, Maria Ciavatta, Marise Ramos, Acácia Kuenzer, Ramon Oliveira, Dermeval Saviani e Ronaldo Araújo e a pesquisa como princípio educativo, baseada nas concepções de Marise Ramos, Pedro Demo, nas Diretrizes Curriculares de EPT e nas Leis Federais e Estaduais. Ao final, foi apresentado um Plano de Ação Educacional, a partir dos resultados obtidos na pesquisa, no que se refere às fragilidades e aos pontos positivos. Esse plano foi organizado com base em três categorias centrais: Interdisciplinaridade, Sustentabilidade e Inovação, tendo como foco a revitalização do currículo de EPT e o aprimoramento e monitoramento dessa política pública.
This work, entitled "Contributions to the Implementation of the PPEC: Overcoming Dualities", was developed in the Professional Masters in Management and Public Education Evaluation of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, in order to submit proposals for improving the implementation of the PPEC ( Research Project Enrichment Curriculum) in a public technical school in Espírito Santo state, in view of the importance and the need for evaluation of this public policy in order to contribute to its improvement. The subjects involved were teachers and students of CEET Vasco Coutinho, who took part in this research through semi-structured interviews for teachers and questionnaires for students. This research was structured into two main categories: work as an educational principle based on the authors, Gaudêncio Frigotto, Maria Ciavatta, Marise Ramos, Acacia Kuenzer, Ramon Oliveira, Dermeval Saviani and Ronaldo Araújo and research as an educational principle, based on the concepts of Marise Ramos, Pedro Demo, the Curriculum Guidelines of EFA and the Federal and State Laws. At the end, it was presented an Educational Action Plan from the results obtained in the research regarding to the weaknesses and the strengths of the project. The plan was organized from three main categories: Interdisciplinary, Sustainability and Innovation, focusing on the revitalization of the EPT (Professional and Technical Education) curriculum and the improvement as well as the monitoring of this public policy.

Abstract:
There are two general ways to introduce functionalities into a polymeric structure: functionalization of the monomeric units before polymerization and postfunctionalization of the preformed polymer. Building libraries of polymers with different functionalities can be completed with significantly less effort by the second method, as each postfunctionalization of a single batch of polymeric backbone can involve as little as one synthetic step. One method of building a polymeric backbone for postfunctionalization involves the synthesis of hyperbranched conjugated polymers (HCPs) from AB2 monomeric units. A polymer formed from n AB2 monomeric units should contain n reactive B groups, which act as sites of functionalization. Utilizing this principle, two different hyperbranched poly(phenylene vinylene-phenylene ethynylene) scaffolds were synthesized and studied in both their inherent properties and functionalization. The first HCP synthesized was compared against a monomeric cruciform model and a linear polymer with a similar structure. The hyperbranched polymer has red-shifted absorption and emission in comparison to the cruciform model and linear polymer. The HCP quenches paraquat more efficiently than the linear polymer by a factor of about two, suggesting a greater rate of energy transfer. The functionalization of HCPs was studied; iodine groups decorating the HCPs were replaced with terminal alkynes by Pd-catalyzed coupling, providing a library of 24 differently functionalized HCPs. Elemental analyses of the postfunctionalized polymers show nearly complete substitution of the iodine groups. The postfunctionalized polymers show increased fluorescence compared to the original iodine decorated polymers, due to the loss of the heavy atom effect inducing iodine groups. The emissions of the postfunctionalized polymers in solution show a strong dependence on the groups attached to the conjugated structures, with emission maxima ranging from 505 nm to 602 nm; quantum yields range from 0.7% to 25%. Solid-state emission studies show stronger and more red-shifted spectra compared to emissions observed in solution.

A caracterização opto-electrónica revelou uma forte absorção na zona espectral azul-verde, confirmando a aplicabilidade destes materiais para este tipo de dispositivos. Foram obtidos valores relevantes em parâmetros como factor de forma e eficiência. É apresentada uma tentativa de explicação dos resultados com base nas propriedades micro-eléctricas e morfológicas. Produziram-se, de igual forma, células flexíveis baseadas na mesma estrutura, tendo em vista a sua aplicabilidade em larga escala. ABSTRACT: In this work some thin film bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells based on polymer poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEHPPV) doped with nanostructures [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) was made and studied. The opto-electrical characterization showed a strong absorption in the blue-green spectrum region, confirming the applicability of these materials for this kind of devices. Relevant data was obtained for fill-factors and efficiency. An attempt to explain the macroscopic behavior based on micro-electrical and morphological properties was done. Flexible devices based on same structure were also made in order to test the possible application in large scale.

It is endemic in many developing countries in Africa and southern Asia and is highly contagious, with the mortality rate approaching 90% in some outbreaks. Development of reverse genetics systems for other morbilliviruses such as rinderpest and measles has allowed more focused research into replication, pathogenicity and marker vaccines.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) noncompliance has been addressed through various lenses. In current literature, there is a greater focus on improving training and safety culture. Improving PPE design to persuade PPE compliance is less explored, especially in sectors beyond healthcare. This study investigates the reasons behind PPE noncompliance across construction, maritime, and chimney sweeping sectors. The results are then used to develop a set of design strategies for PPE manufacturers, as an alternative to merely addressing changes in training, work culture, or organizational procedures. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the sectors, participants, and work environments studied, the study builds upon a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and corresponding analysis approaches, with a greater emphasis on in-depth qualitative studies. The results were synthesized using an integrated synthesis method, which formed the basis for design strategies addressing multiple aspects of designing PPE, including but not limited to testing PPE in real settings and length of use, testing the simultaneous use of various PPEs, and assessing guessability.

Automatic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Monitoring System is a term for an image processing method which is used to identify compliance to PPE utilization practices by personnel on the field. The vast diversity and assortment of PPEs across companies make it quite challenging to take existing limited public dataset models from other companies and apply them directly to specific companies such as Pertamina Hulu Rokan. As a state-owned company that operates one of the largest fields in Indonesia with an extensive drilling program, Pertamina Hulu Rokan decided to use an Automatic PPE monitoring system with online Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) units to enable recognition of PPE objects in drilling operations by the implementation of Artificial Intelligence. As a first step towards building this system, we proposed to build PPE datasets from various Rig areas and in different light conditions. The next step was to use deep learning technology such as Yolov4 and train the model using the PPE datasets to localize PPE objects used by personnel such as gloves, gloves-off, helmets, helmets-off, shoes, shoes-off, masks, masks-off, glasses, glasses-off. Our Preliminary results indicate that our method has been useful to identify compliance of PPE usage during operation work and to minimize the safety risk exposure of our personnel.

Among the attractive polymers for electroluminescent devices are poly(phenylenevinylene)(PPV) and poly(phenyl-p-phenylenevinylene) (PPPV). Abstract:
The main features of limb scanning derive directly from the view geometry. The thermal radiation emitted by a gas along the tangential path through the atmosphere is seen against the cold background of space. These factors enhance the sensitivity to the emission of trace gases, and allow weak features to be seen up to altitudes limited only by the noise level of the instrument and the uncertainty of the background determination. Emission spectra of the atmosphere show features of the "major" (ppmv) trace species--CO2, O3, H2O, CH4 and N2O as well as species present only in ppbv amounts--HNOg and NOg, with interference from gases present in even smaller concentrations.

Abstract:
Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators will form the first line of defense in the event of a public health emergency including an airborne pandemic or a bio-terror attack. The two major pathways by which virus-carrying aerosols can reach the human lungs through these PPEs are: a) the intrinsic penetration through porous layers of the PPE and b) the leakage through gaps between the PPE and a person’s face [1, 2]. The contribution from the second pathway can be significantly reduced using fit-testing i.e. by choosing the appropriately sized respirator for a specific face. Unfortunately, in case of an emergency, it would not be possible to fit-test the entire US population. In this scenario, excessive leakage can occur through the gaps. [1]. Hence, it is critical to identify the potential anatomical leak sites (gaps) and quantify the amount of aerosol leakage through surgical respirators for the average US population. At the behest of Office of Counterterrorism and Emerging Threats, the Center for Devices and Radiological Health, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has been developing a comprehensive risk assessment model for determining the risk to different populations in case of an “off-label” use of such PPEs, i.e. for public emergency scenarios for which these FDA cleared respirators were not intended to be used. In order to develop the risk assessment model, establishing a correlation between the respirator gaps and aerosol leakage between the face and the respirator is critical. A previous study [3] identified the gaps of N95 surgical respirators for a large population and quantified the aerosol leak using computational fluid dynamics. However, the gap surface area, which is a key parameter required for establishing the gap-aerosol leak correlation, has not been quantified before. In this study, gaps were identified and the gap surface areas were quantified for multiple head-respirator combinations under realistic conditions using imaging coupled with computer-aided design and modeling.

Abstract:
Emergency response units increasingly use pressure cylinders made from fibre composites for breathing air as elements of personal protective equipment (PPE). Such applications expose the composite cylinders to harsh temperature and handling conditions. At least in Europe, standards have been used for certifying PPE, which are designed and mandatory for the approval of pressure receptacles for the transport of dangerous goods. Therefore, service conditions specific to PPEs are not accounted for in these standards. In this paper, BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) investigates the residual safety of a composite cylinder design at the end of their designated service life of 15 years. The cylinders (test pressure PH 450 bars; 6.8 Litres) are of one design type with aluminium liner and fully wrapped with carbon fibres, which is commonly considered a “Type III” cylinder. All cylinders were used as PPE by the Berlin fire department and randomly picked in three samples of 25 cylinders each before tested. At BAM, the cylinder samples underwent hydraulic load cycle tests (LCT), conventional burst tests (BT) and so called slow burst tests (SBT). A concept for quantification of strength degradation already introduced by BAM was applied. This concept is based on a probabilistic assessment of the average strength and scatter of each sample of cylinders. The strength distributions of the used PPE-cylinders is shown and analysed. Some unexpected effects are shown and a refinement of the statistical assessment is introduced.

Abstract:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic. The personal protection equipment (PPE), especially medical face masks and N95 filtering face piece respirators (FFRs) are typically worn by people at home/office/working place/outside to protect from infection. Thus, the increase in consumption of facemasks and FFRs across Qatar has given rise to a new environmental challenge, adding to the vast plastic waste in the environment. Our team has already established the baseline levels of marine litter (ML) including plastic waste along the west coast of Qatar based on November 2019 ML survey (Veerasingam et al., 2020a). To study the impact of COVID-19 on ML, we have conducted another survey along the west coast of Qatar in July 2020. The distribution of PPE is higher on the southern part of west coast of Qatar than the northern part. Attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was used to characterize the polymer types of surgical facemasks, N95 FFRs and gloves. Polypropylene (PP) and polyamide (PA) were the abundant polymer types of PPEs. This study confirmed that the PPE could be a potential source for microplastic contaminant in the environment, especially if the present situation continues. Therefore, proper waste removal measures have to be followed.

One significant contributing factor is the lack of understanding of fire behavior in residential structures resulting from the use of ventilation as a firefighter practice on the fire ground. The changing dynamics of residential fires as a result of the changes in home construction materials, contents, size and geometry over the past 30 years compounds our lack of understanding of the effects of ventilation on fire behavior. Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fans were introduced as a technology to increase firefighter safety by controlling the ventilation. However, adequate scientific data is not available for PPV to be used without increasing the risk to firefighters. This fire research report details the experimental data from cold flow experiments, fuel load characterization experiments and full scale fire experiments. During the project it was identified that the positive pressure attack (PPA) and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) were often used interchangeably. For the purpose of this report they have been defined as PPA for when the fan is utilized prior to fire control and PPV for when the fan is used post fire control. The information from the full scale tests was reviewed with assistance from our technical panel of fire service experts to develop tactical considerations for the use of PPV fans in residential single family structures.

Abstract:
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has increased the use of single-use medical fabrics such as surgical masks, respirators, and other personal protective equipment (PPE), which have faced worldwide supply chain shortages. Reusable PPE is desirable in light of such shortages; however, the use of reusable PPE is largely restricted by the difficulty of rapid sterilization. In this work, we demonstrate successful bacterial and viral inactivation through remote and rapid radio frequency (RF) heating of conductive textiles. The RF heating behavior of conductive polymer-coated fabrics was measured for several different fabrics and coating compositions. Next, to determine the robustness and repeatability of this heating response, we investigated the textile’s RF heating response after multiple detergent washes. Finally, we show a rapid reduction of bacteria and virus by RF heating our conductive fabric. 99.9% of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was removed from our conductive fabrics after only 10 min of RF heating; human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) was completely sterilized after 5 min of RF heating. These results demonstrate that RF heating conductive polymercoated fabrics offer new opportunities for applications of conductive textiles in the medical and/or electronic fields.

Review question / Objective: Currently, pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with ILM peeling is the gold standard treatment for full thickness macular hole (FTMH). Despite of the high macular hole closure rate, a refractory FTMH may occur. The next step for a recurrent or persistent MH is usually repeat PPV with extended ILM peeling. This is not always an option especially with high myopia patients or those who had already undergone an aggressive ILM peeling at initial surgery. A variety of novel techniques have been developed to address this issue, among which human amniotic membrane seems to be a promising adjuvant.
