Full textThe main purpose is to redefine the family saga genre – the latest literary representations were confronted with the saga model that functions in the literary genology; the definition was expanded in order to open it up to the cultural evolution of the genre, not only in the field of subject but also poetics. It includes analysis of twelve novels and one set of short stories. In this research the cultural genology, in which there are elements of cultural studies serves as a key methodology. The first part is a theoretical introduction to cultural genology (the history of the saga, the image of the family in culture…). The analytical part begins with an introduction on the family narrative. Analyzed family sagas are divided into two groups: conventional and contentious. The first group includes so-called popular female saga: by Małgorzata Kalicińska, Ałbena Grabowska, Ewa Madeyska, which continue the traditional line of the genre. The second group includes works that argue against the traditional saga model: by Joanna Bator, Magdalena Tulli, Wit Szostak, Jacek Dehnel. The analysis of the literary representations shows two ways of evolution of the genre. The first one is a continuation of the traditional family saga model. They are also based on the same elements of poetic structure. Literary works from the second group of sagas refer to the genological tradition, but at the same time they serve as its critical reinterpretation. The last part of the dissertation introduces the term "anti-saga" for such representations of family sagas.
