Abstract:

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) maintain a constant supply of power to a critical load. The distinguishing features are a fixed voltage and frequency, low harmonic content and the ability to supply the load for a period of time after the incoming supply has failed. The document begins by identifying the typical power-line disturbances and their effect on various types of equipment. Together with the power conditioners used to suppress these disturbances, various UPS standby, line-interactive and on-line configurations are introduced. Next, the possibility of modifying a locally manufactured UPS to meet the design specifications is investigated. The performance of the system under load is evaluated, and forms the basis for the following decision. Due to the large number of modifications required and the inflexibility of local UPS topology, an alternative topology is adopted. In the new topology a power factor corrector, constructed around a DC to DC boost converter, interfaces with the incoming AC line. It delivers a half sinusoidal current into the DC bus. An IGBT inverter using sinusoidal unipolar pulse-width modulation regenerates the AC load voltage after filtering through a LC-filter. The DC bus voltage ripple is reduced by synchronising the inverter load and power factor corrector current while the battery pack maintains the DC bus during a power failure. The power factor corrector employs a dedicated analogue controller chip while a MCS-51 microcontroller generates the inverter PWM, provides the remote monitoring facilities, battery charging and performs general support tasks. The total harmonic distortion of the input current is measured at less than 4% while the power factor remained above 0.99 over the entire load range. The ripple regulator reduced the DC bus voltage ripple without any noticeable effect on the load. Under maximum load, the steady state output voltage is maintained during the -20%, +10% variation in the incoming line voltage. However, the transient response fails to meet the 5% design specification. A 0-100% load step results in a 7% drop in the output voltage while the loss of the load results 10% jump in voltage. System efficiency is measured at 85%. It is the lack of processing power, precluding the use of floating point or an optimal control algorithm, which ultimately compromises the performance of the system. It is recommended that the microcontroller be replaced with a 16-bit processor or digital signal processor to provide the extra computational power needed to optimise the UPS response. To improve the voltage regulation, it is recommended that the control include an inner current loop while the switching frequency should be increased to reduce the energy storage in the output filter. Further adjustments and refinements to the topology are suggested in the final chapter.

Abstract:
A switching power supply to drive magnetrons for microwave heating has been designed, prototyped and tested. The magnetron has an rf power output of 6000 watts and requires a DC voltage of 7200 volts at a current of approximately 1.1 amps for a power input to the magnetron of 8000 watts. Six magnetrons are to be connected per railway tanker for heating the tankers at a railway terminus. The power supply has been designed for small size, efficiency and reliability. Current technology has been used. Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) and power MOSFETs, both of moderately high current and voltage ratings, have been used at 25 kHz and 50 kHz switching frequencies respectively. MOSFETs of 20 amps and 500 volts and IGBT's of 40 amps and 600 volts ratings have been used. Ferrites for use at high switching frequencies have been used for transformers and iron powder material has been used for energy storage inductors. High quality insulating materials have been used to achieve the high voltage insulation requirements. Kapton, PTFE, mylar and nylon have been used where appropriate. Special features of the power supply include the power factor correction first stage, the use of the higher than normal leakage inductance of the power converter second stage transformer to make a resonant converter and the ripple cancelling effect of the series connection of the units on each phase. The power factor correction meets I EC 555 and AS2279 standards for harmonic content on the power supply source. The resonant converter yields zero load current switching of the converter transistors. The output 100 Hz ripple on the 7200 volt supply is negligible because of the series connection of the three outputs.

Abstract:
Managing supply chain relations has evolved over a decade and many companies have given importance to regulate their relations in supply chain relations to stay competitive in the market. In this context of adjusting relations among supply chain members, central point of discussion is the role of power. Power can be a component that persuades one member of supply chain to do certain things that he/she wouldn’t agree on doing it voluntarily. The implication of that power among supply chain members is called as power relations. These power relations between the supply chain members need to be sustained under circumstances of whether the power is balanced or not balanced between the two actors. The key research questions are formulated as followed, What is the perspective of the supply chain members regarding to the role of power relations among supply chain actors? How do the cost, transparency, reliability and flexibility help to sustain the power relations in supply chain? In order to answer these questions, structured literature review was conducted. The conceptual model to sustain the supply chain relations included four main components that were cost, transparency, reliability and flexibility.  Interviews were conducted in three companies located in Sweden, Turkey and India. The company profiles regarding to power relations in this dyadic relationship were the main concern. The three cases tested were supplier dominancy, mutual dependency and subordinate buyer. In this thesis, we accomplished how supply chain members sustained their relations under the influence of power practices among supply chain members. We concluded our thesis study, showing the inter-connection in between these four elements to enable the sustainability of power relations. Moreover, we inferred that even though power seems to be a negative concept, the companies are able to maintain their power relations through awareness of existing power. In addition to that, the companies don’t give equal importance to each four elements though each element is present to maintain the power relations in their dyadic supply chain relationship.

Plagued by corruption, illegal connections, mismanagement, and more than $300 million in annual deficit, Electricite du Liban (EDL), the vertically integrated government owned Power Company, has become a financial burden on the Lebanese public sector. The following paper proposes a strategy for its privatization. We first start by exposing the relevant characteristics of the country, the current socio-economic situation and the factors that have led to the recent calls for privatization. We then focus our discussion on the power sector and on EDL, identifying the problems that have undermined its operations. The second part of the paper tries, based on an overview of three case studies, to define the different market models available and the requirements, strengths and weaknesses of each model. Finally, based on the country's and sector's specificities, we recommend a two-phase privatization strategy that calls for a corporatization and restructuring transitional phase preceding a limited form of wholesale competition.

It is well-known that in mines for mining equipment supply is used the high voltage values (U = 1140/660 V). Besides, the safety system’s devices are based on chip components that used the spark-safe voltage of lesser of 5 V. Taking into account this fact, for automation systems supply a lot of companies produced the low-voltage power supplies. To convert the high-voltage into low-voltage are used transformers or high-voltage capacitors in pulsed power supplies. These devices have a significantly overall dimension and are needed to use a bulk explosion-safe protective covers. There is also difficult problem of the electro-magnetic pulses safety. These pulses are occurred while switching the electrical motors with power.

Abstract:
Magnet Power Supplies (MPSs) for high current magnet loads are extensively used in high energy physics applications such as partical-beam excitation and control for particle accelerator systems. The requirements for MPSs include very low output waveform ripple and demanding transient performance. In addition, low volume and high efficiency are also a benefit in many applications. The purpose of this project was to investigate the suitable converter topology for a DC magnet load using the example power converter specification used to power the Diamond Light Source Storage Ring Quadrupole Magnets. The proposed converter was based on soft-switching resonant converter technology. The input stage consisted of a three phase diode rectifier with a DC link capacitor connected on the grid. The output stage was composed of a synchronous current doubler rectifier (SCDR) linked to the input stage using a series resonant parallel loaded (SRPL) inverter with a high frequency step down transformer. The dynamic model of the converter suitable for control design was based on a DQ approach. The power losses analysis was also presented to predict the converter efficiency. The converter was simulated using a MATLAB simulink in conjunction with PLECS. The design and construction of the converter including the magnet load emulator were presented in detail. Simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed converter topology and the modelling method. Finally, the experimental converter power losses compared to the simulated losses estimation confirm the reliability of the power losses principle.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the design and development of a novel Arc Welding Power Supply utilizing a modified two-switch forward converter topology. The proposed design improves the power quality by improving power factor to near unity and reducing total harmonic distortion. State space analysis of the proposed circuit showed that the circuit followed a boost-buck input output relationship. Simulation of the circuit was first implemented in LTspice to verify the functionality of the new topology. Hardware implementation of the proposed design was built on a scaled-down prototype for a proof-of-concept of the new topology. The prototype specifications were created for a 5A, 20V output with a 20-24V, 60Hz input. This project demonstrated that the proposed new topology was successful in obtaining a near unity power factor and a total harmonic distortion of less than 2%. Additionally, the prototype followed the simulation and calculations of a boost-buck function while varying duty cycle, and the final measurements aligned well with waveforms from the simulation.

Abstract:
This master thesis studies the possible pathways to support military vehicles and ground troops with electrical power a more efficient way, than the present solution. Present energy solution is based on generation of electrical power from internal combustion engines and/or stored energy in batteries. The usage of the vehicles engine for generation of electricity in static positions, results in several disadvantages on a modern battlefield. The batteries specific energy increase every year, but the soldier’s energy need has increased even faster, resulting in a problematic weight load for the dismounted soldier. In the thesis several new or improved solutions are investigated. The solutions are based on technology available today or within the next decade (2020) and selected on the basis of military criteria. A flexible model has been made in an energy simulating program capable to simulate a number of different energy configurations based on future electrical power consumption. Modelling and simulation of the soldiers power system has been recommended by earlier studies [10], but similar models have not been found by the author. The simulation results reveal that improvements of soldiers’ energy solution are feasible. By implementing new or better batteries in the current energy system, considerable improvement can be achieved. Introduction of fuel cells based on methanol fuel starts to become mature, and can result in several advantages on the battlefield. Solar harvesting can give an additional energy supply, but depend highly on insolation and available time for harvesting.

Power supply is the most critical unit in an airplane. A defect in a power supply might lead to a crash. Therefore, it is very useful and important to monitor the status of the airplane's power supply during flight. This paper presents a real-time evaluation system constructed by a central process unit for processing and detecting defects and several remote units for acquiring parameters. Because of the huge amount of data acquired, a combination of Ethernet and time division multiplexing technique has been applied for constructing a 2.5Gbps synchronous data transportation network for the system.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the development of the wireless applications for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) system, the energy harvesting technique for powering the passive sensors in the building environment, and the flexible screen printed coils for Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system to provide the power for a body-area sensor network in an AAL system. The AAL provides safe environments around assisted peoples and help them maintain independent living. The applications in AAL include the fixed monitor sensor in building environment and the wearable sensor on users body area. For supplying power for the applications of AAL wireless power supply provides the power without cables while offers a more environmentally friendly solution. Compared with energy harvesting technology, WPT is capable of supplying more power without increasing the size of the device. In this work, a solar powered PIR sensor demonstrates that the energy harvesting technique for a passive sensor application for the fixed monitor sensor in building environment, which can work for up to 16 hours without ambient energy input. For the on-body area application, the flexible coils are employed in the WPT system because of the comfort requirement. The coils are printed on 65/35 polyester/cotton textile with a Fabink-UV-IF1 interface layer coating. The interface layer provides a relatively flat and smooth surface to prevent the permeation of the conductive paste into the textile and allows the printing of finer profile coils, and the flexibility and breathability of textile can be remained. The measured inductances of the printed flexible coils are 3.9 μH for single layer. The design of the printed coil minimises the coil’s parasitic capacitance, which is less than 25 pF, and consequently increase the self-resonant frequency of the printed coil. A 5 V 1.51 W DC output has been achieved by a wireless power transfer system using the printed flexible coils with Qi standard circuitry; a DC-DC efficiency of 38% has been measured. It has been compared with the system employed with Qi standard wound copper coils which has the recorded 52% DC-DC efficiency.

Abstract:
Global supply chains have become increasingly complex and a critical source of competitive advantage, which makes the understanding of how supply chains create and distribute value an essential task. Prior literature on concentration risks has primarily focused on customer concentration and has overlooked the challenges posed by the major upstream supply chain partners. In addition, CEOs with an optimal mix of technical and behavioral abilities can shape the strategic decision-making process to obtain an advantage against the nonfinancial stakeholders. The existing literature has also overlooked the significant role of the CEO in reducing the impact of supplier-base/customer-base concentrations. Utilizing objective supply chain relation data collected from Bloomberg SPLC and Compustat, we map the supplier base and the customer base for each electronic and chemical manufacturing firm publicly listed under S&P1500 for the fiscal year 2017. We then construct objective measures of supplier and customer concentrations and examine their impacts on the focal firm's financial performance measured by Tobin's Q, gross profit margin, and net profit margin. The performance metrics also include the focal firm's payable period (against the supplier-base) and receivable period (against the customer-base). We also collect information related to the CEOs appointed by the focal manufacturing firm, such as gender, age, and tenure from Execucomp, and consequently investigate their impacts on the supplier concentration and the customer concentration. Our empirical analysis shows contradictory results in the context of supplier-base/customer-base concentrations: higher supplier-base concentration is observed to harm the focal firm’s financial performance, but higher customer-base concentration leads to an increase in the focal firm’s profitability. Although CEO characteristics such as tenure and age did not have any notable impact, female CEOs are found to reduce the adversarial impact of supplier-base concentration and are assumed to exercise a voluntary power restraint against the cooperative customer-base.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to better understand the role of market power and competition frictions between suppliers and buyers in intertwined global and national supply chains. This research leverages empirical and theoretical tools applied to the French dairy industry and French manufacturing importers.Chapter 1 suggests a new methodology to separately estimate firm buyer and seller power, which is important for policy-making but challenging, and apply it to French dairy processors. These firms exert buyer power when purchasing raw milk, and seller power when marketing dairy products. The analysis is based on plant-level data on dairy firms, with observations on prices and quantities of raw-milk input by origin and output by product from 2003 to 2018. Total margins are estimated relying on a production function approach. The existence of a commodity, (i) substitutable as an input or as an output, and (ii) exchanged on global markets where firms are price-takers, then allows separately estimating firm-origin markdowns and firm-product markups. The methodology can also be useful in other contexts, with more limited data. Markdown estimates imply that dairy firms on average purchase raw milk at a price 16% below its marginal contribution to their profits, while markup estimates indicate that firms sell dairy products at a price exceeding their marginal costs by 41%. This chapter also analyzes how exogenous farmer and processor cost shocks pass through the supply chain. Processors partially absorb such shocks by adjusting markups and markdowns, thus smoothing variations in farmer revenues. It further implies that 65% of subsidies are currently diverted from farmers due to processor buyer power.Chapter 2 analyzes the impact of production quotas and their progressive removal in the French milk market, showing that production quotas generated two types of distortions. First, by mechanically fixing production shares across French départements at their pre-quota (1984) level, quotas stopped a natural spatial concentration for about 25 years, a process that restarted right after the start of the progressive quota removal in 2008. Second, the design of the quota system spurred the growth of small farms while constraining the expansion possibilities of larger farms. This redistributive scheme thus successfully refrained inequalities among farms growing until then, yet at the cost of distorting the competition-led cream-skimming of farms. Results finally show how the catching-up process in farm selection following the quota removal intervened more or less early across départements, depending on the stringency implied by quota constraints at the local level. These observations are rationalized with a simple model of perfect competition between heterogeneous farms.Chapter 3 quantifies buyer power in input trade and evaluates its aggregate effects. The developed empirical strategy for estimating importer buyer power from standard trade and production data does not rely on assumptions about other input markets. The results show that French manufacturing firms exert an average markdown of 1.49 on imported inputs and of 1.59 on domestically purchased inputs, revealing their significant buyer power in both markets. The welfare implications are then explored using an equilibrium model

Camacho, Rojas Jorge Arturo. "Distributing power : a cratological study of emerging technologies for electric power supply." Thesis, University of East London, 2010. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/2601/.

Abstract:
This thesis has two main objectives. First, to develop a philosophical and theoretical framework for a cratological (from the Greek kratos: power) study of technology, i.e. one that explains and evaluates how certain technologies afford states or changes in the structure of power of the social systems in which they are embedded. The normative principle proposed is the ideal of equality of power. The second objective is to deploy these frameworks in an analysis of the technological and industrial development of systems for electric power supply. Driven by a quest to achieve greater economies of scale, the technological development of the industry during the 20th century emphasised constant increments in output scale and a model of centralised supply. Along with this process came a configuration and consolidation of the industry around a highly concentrated or monopolistic structure. In these conditions, utilities and other power companies acquired control over a key social resource, namely electric energy, and a concomitant share of social power. Since the 1980s, but particularly in the last decade, technological innovations are opening the possibility of a radical transformation in the industrial structure of power supply systems around the paradigm of distributed energy resources. Along with important technical, economic and ecological benefits, this new paradigm may afford a positive, from our cratological perspective, transformation: namely a shifting of control over the electricity supply system towards communities, small and independent generators, and a new breed of energy prosumers. All of these may find themselves newly empowered by the emerging technological paradigm, in a way that is similar to what is also becoming possible in the communications industry thanks to the development of the Internet.

Abstract:

To create the ultimate wireless instrumentation unit for down-hole applications high temperature electronics with very high reliability is needed. It is possible to use ordinary bulk-CMOS devices at temperature up to 175 ⁰C, but the lifetime at these temperatures is to low for a down-hole instrumentation unit. An alternative is to use s Silicon on Insulator process under the fabrication of the semiconductors. The SOI process is a fabrication process where there is buried a oxide layer in the silicon wafer, and thus allowing higher breakdown voltage and/or lower current leakage. The low current leakage allows the semiconductors to be used at higher junction temperature. SOI devices that are commercial available off-the-shelf as a expected lifetime for at least 5 years at 225 ⁰C and thus much lower at junction temperatures below 200 ⁰C. The SOI technology can then be used together with hybrid circuits using ceramic substrate as a replacement for organic PCB and thick-film technology for the passive devices. A package like this gives a system with high reliability both toward high temperature operation and lifetime. The main limitation in the high temperature design is the availability off the larger capacitors; the limitation for high temperature stacked capacitors is 200 ⁰C. The converters designed are the standard step-up and step-down switch-mode power supplies. The converters are designed with current mode control; current mode control is used because of the advantage that comes with it. One off the advantages is the possibility to limit the inductor current; another advantage is the possibility to use constant current charging for the battery. When designing the SOI devices for high temperature operation it is difficult to achieve high enough breakdown voltage. With this in mind, the high temperature converter is designed with series coupled transistors to achieve high enough breakdown voltage for high voltage operation. The transistors have always some small perturbations in their specifications, this has to be considered when connecting transistors in series. This perturbations in for example turn-off speed makes an uneven voltage sharing; this is solved by connecting suitable capacitors in parallel with the switches to maintain an even voltage sharing.

Abstract:

This thesis studied reliability of power supply in Zambia following two major power blackouts that affected the whole country. The case study focussed on the generation and transmission network owned by Zambia’s biggest utility company Zesco. Three methods of study were selected. The first method looked at the transient stability simulations of Zesco generators when subjected to a large disturbance after a three phase short circuit was applied at three selected buses which are considered critical to the system. The simulations were carried out in SIMPOW. The results show that with fault duration of less than 200 milliseconds, all generators regained synchronism after fault removal. However, extending the fault duration to 200 milliseconds resulted in loss of synchronism in generators at Victoria Falls power station. The second method studied the contingency of some critical components in the Zesco system. The contingency analysis was implemented using software called NETBAS. Study showed that the Zesco system is N-1 stable for contingencies involving transmission lines and transformers. However the system is vulnerable to contingencies involving major power stations such as Kafue gorge and Kariba North bank. The third study proposed modification to the distance protection system to include the effect of zero sequence mutual coupling resulting from parallel circuits following a fault involving earth on a protected line. Adaptive techniques were developed where the settings of the distance relay would change to suit the circuit configuration. This technique resulted in optimal performance of the distance relay under all conditions of parallel line operation. The thesis concludes by making recommendations based on the findings from the studies carried out.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to investigate the design and implementation of a 7.5kVA Matrix Converter-based power supply for aircraft applications (GPU Ground Power Unit). A Matlab/Simulink as well as SABER simulation analysis of the candidate Matrix Converter system is provided. The design and implementation of the Matrix Converter is described, with particular attention to the strict requirements of the given power supply application. This AC-AC system is proposed as an effective replacement for the conventional AC-DC-AC system which employs a two-step power conversion. The Matrix Converter is an attractive topology of power converter for power supply applications where factors such as the absence of electrolytic capacitors, the potentiality of increasing power density, reducing size and weight and good input power quality are fundamental. An improved control structure is proposed. This structure employs an ABC reference frame implementation comprising at the Repetitive Control strategy combined with a traditional tracking controller in order to attenuate or eliminate the unwanted harmonic distortion in the output voltage waveform of the Matrix Converter and to compensate for the steady-state error. The system with the proposed control was initially fully analyzed and verified by simulation. The analysis of the input and output waveforms identified the constraints that need to be satisfied to ensure successful operation of the converter. Finally, to demonstrate both the Matrix Converter concept and the control strategy proposed, a 7.5kVA prototype of the proposed system was constructed and tested in Nottingham PEMC laboratory. The experimental results obtained confirmed the expectations from the simulation study and the validity of the power converter and control design.

The energy efficiency of digital circuits continues to be a major factor in determining the size and weight of battery-operated electronics. Integration of more functionality in a single system has made battery longevity a major problem. Operating circuits at their minimum energy operating voltage (MEP) has been proposed as a solution for energy critical applications where performance is not a key constraint. This thesis explores the sensitivity of the MEP to operating conditions and motivates the need for continuous minimum energy tracking based on the energy savings possible. A circuit that can dynamically track the MEP of a digital circuit with varying load conditions and temperature is presented. A low power, voltage scalable DC-DC converter is also embedded within the chip. The proposed minimum energy tracking algorithm uses a novel approach to sense the energy consumed per operation. The energy sensing circuitry does not use high-resolution Analog-to-Digital converters or high gain amplifiers. The energy estimate is used in a slope tracking algorithm to track the minimum energy operating voltage. The minimum energy tracking loop along with a low-voltage DC-DC converter and test circuitry were fabricated in a 65nm CMOS process.
(cont.) The circuits are powered from an external 1.2V supply. The digital test circuitry was capable of operation at voltages as low as 0.25V. The tracking of the minimum energy operating voltage with change in workload and temperature was observed. The DC-DC converter was able to deliver load voltages between 0.25V and 0.7V with an efficiency > 78% at load power levels of the order of 1 0.1W and above.

This thesis discusses the design and implementation of a custom power supply interface for the Pioneer mobile robot used in MIT's 6.01 course, "Introduction to Electrical Engineering and Computer Science." The interface is a printed circuit board that provides bipolar voltage rails of +7VDC and -7VDC, expanding on its predecessor, which only provides a unipolar voltage rail of +1OVDC. The board is mounted internally to the robot and can power the student breadboard circuits via the bipolar voltage rails. This redesigned power supply interface will help the course staff teach students about circuit design in a much simpler context and allow students to focus more on engineering different circuits rather than spending time on tangential problems.

The intensity of the laser is controlled by adjusting the magnitude of the input laser diode current. Therefore, it is the purpose of this thesis to design a power supply with adjustable current for the laser. Through the architecture design of the power supply, the energy conversion efficiency is improved, the volume of the power supply module is reduced, and three sets of independent laser machines can be simultaneously provided with a stable and adjustable current source. In the system architecture of this thesis, a power factor correction circuit, a phase shift full bridge conversion circuit, and a buck converter are included. The boost power factor correction circuit uses a model UCC28180 control chip manufactured by Texas Instruments, with the input AC voltage range of 100 to 240 V and the output voltage to a phase-shifted full-bridge conversion circuit is DC 390 V. The phase-shifted full-bridge conversion circuit uses a model UCC3895 control chip manufactured by Texas Instruments, and uses a phase shift technique to achieve a zero voltage switching flexible technology. The PI controller in the buck is composed of an operational amplifier to form an analog controller, which can adjust a single independent output current between 21.6 and 32A.

This thesis is to describe the design process and methods of a programmable power-quality power supply. The main purpose is to design an AC power supply, but it can editing an arbitrary output voltage waveform through a programmable program not only the general common sinusoidal output voltage waveform. The alternating current with arbitrary waveform can be used to emulate a power supply of pollution with power harmonics, flicker, sags, swells and other disturbances. They can be used as a reference simulate power source when we are designing a power source filter or can be used to test equipment for power pollution interference. Power-quality power supply rated output power given here is 500 VA, which is mainly use of class-D power amplifier as the main body. The stage before class-D power amplifier is a boost circuit which used to rise the input voltage. Input voltage of the class-D power amplifier is output voltage of the boost circuit. Programmable signal and user interface are edited by the LabVIEW software, and the signal DAC output through myDAQ which input to the microcontroller dsPIC30f4011 for the PWM control of switching elements in the system. Conventional audio power amplifiers are operating with fixed power supply. It means that the power losses caused by quiescent current are also fixed and regardless to output power. When power amplifier working in low power condition, the voltage across power devices will be larger than high power condition such that the losses on power devices increase. This dissertation presents an audio power amplifier with variable power supply controlled by input audio signal. In low-power output condition, the power supply will provide low voltage to reduce the power loss on power transistors and improve circuit efficiency. The power supply voltage of power amplifier can be controlled by the audio input signal used as the reference of power converter. The amplifier system is divided into two parts: the audio power amplifier adopting an integrated amplifier driving circuit with class AB topology and the power supply implemented with a full-bridge phase-shifted converter.

Kitron had wishes to be able to test and measure how disturbance affects their vehicle electronic units before they have been verified by SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden in Borås. This work started with the writing of a demand specification together with Kitron for a product PSQS, Power Supply Quality Simulator, which can generate some test pulses according to a standard for electronic units to Volvos vehicles. A design proposal was developed with the help the demand specification and was verified with the help of simulations. All electric schematics was designed with the guide of the design proposal. The pulses realized in the works of this thesis are those which Kitron experienced that they have a need to test in their own premises and which are possible to generate with the means available. All work took place at Kitron in Jönköping, the restriction of the work has been the cost of components not to be to high as well as the finished product shall be easily managed. This thesis work resulted in a unit which is possible to produce a number of disturbances on the voltage feed to a unit under test. Some pulses have not been completely correct according to Volvos standard. There are large possibilities to further develop PSQS to a unit that follows Volvos standard and even other vehicle producer’s standards.

The computer and communication products were widely spread recently. The power quality demanded of above products is higher than the conventional electrical products. However, the power quality of the utility is degraded due to the wide use of nonlinear load. The requirement of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is increased. The cost is the most important factor in designing the small capacity UPS. The single chip microprocessor based UPS has the advantages of lost cast, high flexible and simplified circuit. Hence, the single chip microprocessor is widely used in designing the small capacity UPS. In this paper a microprocessor-based controller is developed for a low cost UPS.

In this paper, power supply automated test system is designed by Labview software. The main purpose is to perform electrical tests of power supply by program, and to turn the test results into a relevant test report. This research has the following advantages: (1)decrease test time. (2) shorten test steps, improve test accuracy and reduce human errors.(3) set up the program conveniently. (4) the system provides operational history for debug. This paper has been proved by experience: under the same power supply test items, compared with manual test time, this automated system test time is reduced by 40%~50% approximately. It can make it convenient for tester schedule arrangements. The automation test system settings are simple; you only need to set up the relevant test conditions, then the system can perform the tests and automatically turn the results into a test report. In addition, the report provides a recording function for debug, so that testers can have the debug history for the relevant tests; successors can refer to the history, effectively avoiding the time of studying all over again. The automated test system has the advantages of standardizing tests, increasing productivity, and reducing costs. Currently, it has become a trend that automated tests are gradually replacing manual tests. In this paper, the Labview diagram-controlling program (which is based on diagram programming language) can let users perform device control and test data retrieving more quickly, compared with traditional character programming language.

This thesis presents the study and implementation of a power supply with a input AC voltage of 600 Vrms and output power of 7 kW. A two-stage power converter topology consisting of an interleaved power factor corrector (PFC) and an open-loop controlled full-bridge series resonant convertor is adopted. The complete system incorporates the EMI filter, auxiliary power supplies, and protection circuits. The front-stage interleaved PFC helps improve the power factor and reduce the input current harmonics. The post-stage full-bridge series resonant converter can raise the conversion efficiency with zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero-current switching (ZCS) techniques. Finally, a 7-kW power converter is designed, implemented, and tested. Experimental results are measured and analyzed.

1Because of the critically global warming pollution, economy of energy resources has become a serious issue. This thesis is devoted to design an AC-to-DC regulator for optimizing the conversion efficiency of the converter and decreasing the power loss during no-load condition. The advantages and drawbacks of the power supply under is operated in different modes, are also discussed especially about the power loss under no-load condition. The power supply consists two parts. The pre-regulator is an active power factor correction circuit to raise the input power factor. The post-stage is a half-bridge series resonant converter that utilizes zero–voltage switching and synchronous rectification to achieve high conversion efficiency. In this thesis, the control mechanism reducing the duty cycle is utiliged to solve the output over voltage problem of the half-bridge series resonant converter under no-load condition.
