Abstract:
This chapter offers a transnational, historical, and comparative look at the political mobilization of the European working classes against austerity and inequality. It examines the recent example of Syriza, a radical left coalition that emerged in opposition to neoliberal attempts to impose a crushing austerity on the Greek population. It compares this experiment to earlier political efforts mounted by the left wing of the British Labour party in London in 1982–86 and that of the Brazilian Workers' party (PT) in opening up decisions about new municipal investment to a citywide process of popular participation in Porto Alegre from 1989 until 2004. Both the experiences of the Greater London Council in the early 1980s and the PT in municipal government in the 1990s were attempts to change the state from being a means of domination and exclusion to becoming a resource for transformation by campaigning for electoral office in order then to decentralize and redistribute power. In practice, Syriza is attempting the same project at a national level.

Abstract:
This chapter provides the broadest evidence on behalf of my power asymmetry argument. It begins by discussing my index of presidential powers (the dependent variable), which draws heavily from Shugart and Carey and other scholars. It then creates a measure of power asymmetry (the main independent variable): the difference between the share of seats held by Incumbent versus Opposition forces at the constituent assembly. I call this “table asymmetry.” Finally, it compares all the new constitutions to those replaced. Evidence is provided that variations in outcome are strongly correlated with variations in power asymmetry. The chapter also shows how changes in constitutions contributed to changes in regime conditions (liberal democracy declined in cases where constitutions granted presidents more power).

Abstract:
Anticolonial theories analyze complex power relations between the colonizer and the colonized to promote the political project of decolonization. This chapter situates anticolonial feminist theories in relation to two schools of anticolonial thinking, postcolonial and decolonial theory, particularly the strand of decolonial theory developed by the modernity/coloniality school of thought of Latin America. It compares key theoretical arguments and political projects associated with intersectionality, postcolonial feminism, and the decolonial feminism that Maria Lugones has advanced with her notion of the coloniality of gender. The chapter explores the reception of Lugones work in Latin America and the critical insights that decolonial theory offers contemporary social justice projects.

Thompson, Douglas I. The Power of Uncivil Conversation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190679934.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter investigates Michel de Montaigne’s engagement with the Italian humanist conception of “civil conversation” as an exercise for training effective political counselors and ambassadors. Using himself as a model, Montaigne prescribes a more confrontational, uncivil form of conversation as a means to train his readers into a high tolerance for political negotiation with the widest possible range of interlocutors and opinions. Following the conventions of the humanist literature on political education, Montaigne argues that the best way to practice political negotiation and other forms of conversation with political opponents is to go out and do it. The chapter then compares this theme of the Essais with Rainer Forst’s conception of tolerance as a form of civil public reason.

Shaner, Katherine A. Power in the Ekklēsia. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190275068.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter compares the relationship between leadership qualifications for bishops and deacons and limitations placed on widows and enslaved persons in both the letters of Ignatius and 1 Timothy. This comparison yields fissures in each argument that reveal power struggles in the ekklēsia around enslaved participation and leadership. First Timothy asserts that widows and slaves must be subordinate to those with higher status and that the leadership structure of the ekklēsia should reflect this subordination. Such an instruction suggests that, in practice, slaves participated in the community differently than the proposed guidelines. Ignatius’s Letter to Polycarp as well as his Letter to the Philippians reveal not only ambiguity around enslaved leadership but also power struggles within communities purchasing enslaved members’ freedom. The chapter suggests that enslaved persons participated in the complex structuring of power in communities; sometimes as dehumanized tools, sometimes as ambiguous actors, and sometimes as fully equal partners.

Thomas, Hugh M. Power and Pleasure. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198802518.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Power and Pleasure reconstructs life at the court of King John and explores how his court produced both pleasure and soft power. Much work exists on royal courts of the late medieval and early modern periods, but the jump in record keeping under John allows a detailed reconstruction of court life for an earlier period. Following an introductory chapter, Chapter 2 covers hunting and falconry. Material culture forms the subject of Chapter 3, with an emphasis on luxuries such as fine textiles and gold and silver plate. Chapter 4 explores aspects of court life for which less information survives, among them art and music, games and gambling, chivalry and marshal splendour, and sexual activities, including King John’s sometimes coercive pursuit of noblewomen. Chapter 5 concerns religious life at court and a deeply unsuccessful effort to project an image of sacral kingship. Food and feasting are the subjects of Chapter 6. Chapter 7 covers royal castles and other residences, the landscapes in which the court spent time, and ceremonial activities during the court’s rapid itineration around King John’s lands. Power and pleasure are discussed throughout the book, but Chapter 8 focuses on the former, analysing various forms of symbolic communication, gift exchange, and the interaction between new forms of bureaucracy and older forms of soft power. The chapter also addresses why John received so little political benefit from his magnificent court. Chapter 9 compares John’s court to others of his own time and those of previous and subsequent centuries.

Shuy, Roger W. The Effects, Frequency, and Power of the Government’s Uses of Deceptive Ambiguity in Criminal Investigations. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190669898.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter first summarizes the role of deceptive ambiguity in relationship to the legal institution’s need to discover predisposition, intentionality, and voluntariness. It then compares the relative frequency of the government representatives’ uses of deceptive ambiguity found in the six elements of the Inverted Pyramid: speech events, schemas, agendas, speech acts, conversational strategies, and lexical and grammatical language. Finally, it summarizes and compares the uses of deceptive ambiguity by police and prosecutors, when institutional power is strongly evident, with the way deceptive ambiguity is used by three types of cooperating witnesses, when this institutional power is hidden during their undercover interactions with targets.
