Abstract:
Abstract This paper compares hedging risk for various weights of feeder cattle hedged with a traditional cross hedge and a ratio cross hedge. A traditional hedge calls for the purchase/sale of one pound of futures for each pound of cash feeder cattle. By contrast, a ratio hedge requires estimation of a hedge ratio to determine the number of pounds of futures needed to hedge one pound of cash feeder cattle. Hedge ratios were found to be larger than 1.0 for light-weight feeder cattle. By using the estimated hedge ratios, it was shown that hedging risk could be reduced 20-50 percent compared to that achieved by using a hedge ratio of 1.0.

Abstract:
Many literati consensually consider Ezra Pound a very significant figure in bringing Eastern poetry into the English world. His Cathay and In A Station of the Metro manifest his engagement in Chinese and Japanese poetry respectively. Rarely have scholars systematically discussed and evaluated the interconnection between the three languages poetry displayed in Pounds work. Therefore, this article aims to provide a comparative and comprehensive analysis of Pounds works, Chinese ancient poems and haikus. It begins with an overview of poetry and then moves to introducing how English and Eastern poetry differ. In the discussion, Chinese and Japanese poetry have been explored respectively and jointly. This article, from the perspective of one with mastery or intermediacy in all three languages, aims to provide some more accurate and aesthetic translations of Chinese poems by poets including Wang Wei, and haikus by haijins such as Bash. These translations (unless specified, original) better serve to compare and contrast Pounds poems and their Eastern counterparts. A series of close, dialectic analyses demonstrate that Pound both possessed merits and defects in approaching Eastern Poetry. This study provides a more thorough account of this significant literary crossover, from which it is hoped that future studies discover how Pound developed and/or popularised certain styles in this process.

Abstract:
For almost 25 years between 1797 and 1821, the gold standard in Britain was suspended in order to finance the Napoleonic Wars, creating a paper pound or a fiat currency. Suspension was accompanied by substantial inflation and the accumulation of public debt. By identifying shifts in the spot exchange rate of paper pounds for gold, I document how contemporaries' expectations of how debt would be stabilized in the future shaped the pound's internal value. Thus, it is argued that during the “paper pound” period, fiscal prospects provided a third mechanism, beyond monetary and real factors, affecting the price level.

SACCONAGHI, CARLO. "VITTORIO SERENI TRADUTTORE DI EZRA POUND." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/471648.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation focuses on Vittorio Sereni’s translations of eight poems from Pound’s "Lustra", and investigates the influence that these translations exercised on Sereni’s own poetry. The first chapter outlines the context in which the translations were conceived. I detail the main inputs through which Sereni approached Pound’s poems in the early 1950’s: Luciano Anceschi and the group of young poets — later organized in the Neo-Avant-Gardist “63 Group” — who considered Pound as a master; the praise for Pound that T.S. Eliot had stated on several occasions; and the “Pound case”, which stimulated political and poetical discussions among Italian intellectuals after his arrest, extradition and internment. In this context, Sereni translated some poems from Lustra at the insistence of Pound’s main Italian publisher, Vanni Scheiwiller. The second chapter concerns the critical edition and a commentary of Sereni’s translations. In this section I collate the manuscripts, drafts and editions curated by Sereni and I record the author’s variants, which show the creative process preceding the final text. An overall interpretation of each poem is followed by a detailed analysis of Sereni’s stylistic choices and his translational attitude, which fluctuates between the assimilation and rejection of Pound’s technique. The last chapter reveals how the translations of Pound’s poems inspired Sereni’s own poetry. While searching for a renewed poetic language, Sereni was deeply intrigued by Pound’s poems because of their original aesthetic paradigm. I identify several textual elements which show Pound’s influence on the poems that Sereni wrote immediately after his translations — such as the combination of different languages, the extension of the verses’ measure, the assimilation of rhetorical devices as the iteration, and also, according to Pound’s aesthetics habit, the insertion of literary references. These stylistic features are not present in Sereni’s writings which precede Pound’s translations, and they characterize Sereni’s third book, "Gli strumenti umani" (1965). In conclusion, my research reveals the contribution that the translations from Pound’s early poems gave to the poetical development of Vittorio Sereni, and it represents a significant case study of the impact that Anglo-American modernist poetry had on the Italian post-hermetic poetic progress.

Abstract:
My dissertation discusses the early career of the American poet Ezra Pound in relation to visual art at the beginning of the twentieth century. Pound was a leading propagandist of modern art, advertising his friends Wyndham Lewis, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Constantin Brancusi, among others, in his extensive art criticism, and explaining his poetic theories by reference to art movements and practices. The majority of Pound's critics have followed his lead and describe his poetry by using the aesthetic values and terminology Pound conveniently supplied in his prose. I argue that this is an erroneous move, which hides a series of problems in the development of Pound's poetics. Pound's poetry shows surprisingly little evidence of his interest in art; however, unpublished manuscripts show that this evidence existed, but was deliberately excised. My dissertation aims to uncover the sequence of decisions which led to vital changes in Pound's poetic style, by focusing on the periods during which he aligned himself with particular artists or movements. In my first chapter, I look at unpublished essays and poetry written between 1906 and 1908, to explore Pound's interest in the work of James McNeill Whistler, and explain an apparent change in poetic style in 1908. My second chapter deals with Pound's association with the vorticists, which I argue was less a meeting of minds than a method of placing his imagist verse, with its nineteenth-century predilections, in an emphatically modern context. In the third chapter I analyse the earliest drafts of The Cantos in detail, showing how Pound's conception of the poem in 1915 as egalitarian in structure and argument was compatible with the type of visual description he had rejected in 1908. The dada movement, which I discuss in my fourth chapter, contributes to Pound's redefinition of artistic talent. His emphasis on the value of the artist's personality above the artist's works necessitates a reconsideration of the structure of The Cantos in 1922. The fifth chapter examines the role of sculpture in Pound's poetry and prose, in order to determine how it becomes an analogy for Pound's poetic technique.

Abstract:
This report documents the results of two of tests that were performed on an explosive containment vessel at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico in July 2013 to provide some deeper understanding of the effects of charge geometry on the vessel response [1]. The vessel was fabricated under Code Case 2564 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, which provides rules for the design of impulsively loaded vessels [2]. The explosive rating for the vessel, based on the Code Case, is nine (9) pounds TNT-equivalent. One explosive test consisted of a single, centrally located, 7.2 pound bare charge of Composition C-4 (equivalent to 9 pounds TNT). The other test used six each 1.2 pound charges of Composition C-4 (7.2 pounds total) distributed in two bays of three.

Guo, Xingzhou, Xinran Hu, and Yunfeng Chen. "Exploration of Back Exoskeleton’s Effectiveness on Transportation Maintenance Workers during Lifting Activities." In 14th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE 2023). AHFE International, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54941/ahfe1003044.

Full text
Abstract:
Safety statistics from Indiana Department of Labor showed that the transportation and warehousing industry has the second highest number of reported occupational fatalities (26) in 2020. One major cause of occupational fatalities is ergonomic issues including excessive force, repetitive motion, and awkward posture. These ergonomic issues have already been extensively studied and corresponding solutions were developed for the building construction activities. However, transportation activities are different from building construction activities in duration, intensity, and frequency. In addition, there lacks studies exploring whether the proposed solutions to ergonomic issues of building construction could also solve the ergonomic issues of transportation activities. To this end, field experiments were conducted with 29 transportation maintenance workers between August 9th 2023 and September 23rd 2023 at a transportation maintenance unit of Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Lifting bags of dry concrete mix was identified as the activity of top concern, according to (1) the perception of which activity most likely to cause an injury to back or shoulder, (2) the frequency of performing the activity, and (3) the number of historical sprain injuries caused by the activity. Therefore, the participants were asked to lift 12 bags of three different weight of dry concrete mix with and without a back exoskeleton. Specifically, three different weights of bags include: 80-pound bags (weight of bags that INDOT maintenance workers mostly use), 50-pound bags (weight of bags that INDOT maintenance workers sometimes use and which is recommended by Recommended Weight Limit equation under the ideal condition), and 31.5-pound bags (recommended weight of bags based on applying values from real lifting practice of INDOT maintenance workers into the Recommended Weight Limit equation). The participants need to lift bags from a pallet to a truck with liftgate, have a five-minute short break, offload those bags from the truck with liftgate to the ground, and then have a 20-minute long break. Skin conductance and heart rate, as the key indicators of physical fatigue, were measured during the lifting activity. In addition, perceived level of muscle exertion was also collected by using a Borg 6-20 scale during two experiment breaks of each trial for indicating level of fatigue risk level from low to very high. After performing a paired t-test of collected data, it shows that the back exoskeleton does not significantly help workers reduce physical fatigue risks while transportation maintenance workers lift 31.5-pound bags. However, the back exoskeleton can significantly lower the physical fatigue risks when transportation maintenance workers lift 50-pound bags and 80-pound bags. This study not only fills the gap of exploring the effectiveness of back exoskeleton implementation in transportation maintenance activities, but also provides evidence and practical recommendations for transportation workers, managers, and organizations that a back exoskeleton could reduce the level of fatigue risk when lifting materials with weight of 50 pounds and above.
