Tabacco, Giovanni. La relazione fra i concetti di potere temporale e di potere spirituale nella tradizione cristiana fino al secolo XIV. Edited by Laura Gaffuri. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-8453-995-3.

Abstract:

Abstract:
‘Practices, motives, and experiences’ considers why people undertake pilgrimages, the ways that they shape and perform them, and how the journeys affect them. It shows that pilgrimage is neither separate from the normal lives of participants nor transitory in nature: some people become permanent pilgrims, constantly on the road. While pilgrimage can be about being restless and wanting to get away from normal daily existences to find things anew, it also is closely associated with reinforcing the everyday nature of existence. Similarly, while it involves going away from home to places where something spiritually potent and empowering may be encountered, it also is associated with thoughts about home.

Abstract:
This chapter examines tales of beautiful Jewish men and women taken captive by Rome. In these stories, beauty performs potent cultural work. Through sexualized narratives that portray the captive Jew as victim of Roman greed, Bavli Gittin makes use of a common Roman moral trope—concern for luxuria, an insatiable desire for luxury that is also expressed in lust and licentiousness—to critique elite Roman decadence and moral degradation. These stories also reveal a striking departure from the conventional beauty politics of rabbinic culture. Elsewhere, the Babylonian Talmud frequently portrays women’s beauty as a source of spiritual danger to rabbinic men. By contrast, Bavli Gittin portrays the beautiful woman as a victim, not a threat. Amidst situations of overt Roman violence, Bavli Gittin affirms the moral innocence of violated men and women who are subjected to the conqueror’s lust.

Abstract:
This chapter charts the transformation of Hoodoo as it moves from the plantation environment and encounters both snake-oil Hoodoo and the spiritual marketplace of the urban environment. Prior to emancipation, the larger plantation slave communities, as well as areas of high black concentration, had functioned as culturally potent repositories and cultural germination sites where, partially due to demographics, the culture-making process was intensified. The period following emancipation was transformative in every sense for African Americans and black belt traditional Hoodoo. In particular, Hoodoo would find itself approaching a critical crossroads in its identity and existence from emancipation to World War II. This chapter examines how the black belt Hoodoo complex was modified and transformed under the influence of both internal and external factors from Reconstruction to World War II. It shows that conjure after emancipation would continue to figure significantly in black consciousness of self, family, and community under the new freedom.

McKillop, Heather. The Ancient Maya. ABC-CLIO, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400612800.

Abstract:
Thanks to powerful innovations in archaeology and other types of historical research, we now have a picture of everyday life in the Mayan empire that turns the long-accepted conventional wisdom on its head. Ranging from the end of the Ice Age to the flourishing of Mayan culture in the first millennium to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century,The Ancient Mayatakes a fresh look at a culture that has long held the public's imagination. Originally thought to be peaceful and spiritual, the Mayans are now also known to have been worldly, bureaucratic, and violent. Debates and unanswered questions linger. Mayan expert Heather McKillop shows our current understanding of the Maya, explaining how interpretations of "dirt archaeology," hieroglyphic inscriptions, and pictorial pottery are used to reconstruct the lives of royalty, artisans, priests, and common folk. She also describes the innovative focus on the interplay of the people with their environments that has helped further unravel the mystery of the Mayans' rise and fall.

Abstract:
Between the first and last words of a Black gospel song, musical sound acquires spiritual power. During this unfolding, a variety of techniques facilitate musical and physical transformation. The most important of these is a repetitive musical cycle known by names including the run, the drive, the special, and the vamp. Through its combination of reiteration and intensification, the vamp turns song lyrics into something more potent. While many musical traditions use vamps to fill space, or occupy time in preparation for another, more important event, in gospel, vamps are the main event. Why is the vamp so central to the Black gospel tradition? What work—musical, cultural, and spiritual—does the gospel vamp do? And what does the vamp reveal about the transformative power of Black gospel more broadly? This book explores the vamp’s essential place in Black gospel song, arguing that these climactic musical cycles turn worship services into transcendent events. In the following pages, the words and music of Richard Smallwood, a paradigmatic contemporary gospel composer, anchor the book’s investigation of the convergence of sound and belief in the Gospel Imagination. Smallwood’s expansive oeuvre is especially illustrative of the eclecticism and homiletic intention that characterize gospel music. Along the way, this study brings Smallwood’s songs and the ideas that frame them into conversation with many of the tradition’s exemplars: Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Twinkie Clark, Kurt Carr, Margaret Douroux, V. Michael McKay, and Judith McAllister, among others. Focusing on choral forms of gospel song, this book shows how the gospel vamp organizes expressive activity around a moment of transcendence, an instant when the song shifts to a heightened space of musical activity. This sonic escalation fuels traffic between the seen world and another, bringing believers into contact with a host of scenes from scripture, and with the divine, too.

Hoffmann, George. Reforming French Culture. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808763.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Satire has recently re-emerged as a potent political tool, but it has played many different roles in the past. French reformers waged massive satire campaigns in the sixteenth century to little or no political effect and, even, to their own disadvantage. Satiric forms nevertheless flourished because they fulfilled a devotional purpose. By portraying themselves as lonely travelers passing through the strange and exotic lands of Catholic custom, French reformers found a way to flesh out imaginatively the Pauline injunction to live in the world but not as part of it. The spiritual alienation cultivated in satiric literature allowed reformers to fashion themselves, after Calvin’s recommendation, as pilgrims in this world and confessional foreigners in their home country. At the same time, these satires’ self-presentation and their modes of address implied a reformed audience constituted by those who “got the joke.” The new communion entailed in laughing at Catholic excesses, modeled upon the reformed theological concept of “communication,” imagined a pan-European community held together by a non-local sense of belonging. Thus, French reformers embraced a diasporic identity well in advance of their actual emigration to the New World. But, more surprising still, the attitude of looking at one’s own culture through the eyes of an estranged traveler spread beyond reformed milieus to become a staple of French culture more generally. Through Montaigne, the ploy of acting the outsider in one’s homeland would become one of the signature devices of the Enlightenment’s challenge to the world of the Old Regime.
