Lawson, Stephanie. 16. Critical Approaches to Global Politics. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/hepl/9780198704386.003.0017.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines seven critical approaches to global politics: Marxism, Critical Theory, constructivism, feminism, postmodernism, postcolonial theory, and green theory. In their book The Manifesto of the Communist Party, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels address the implications for global order of the rise of capitalism and the role of the bourgeoisie as controllers of capital. Their ideas have had a major influence on critical approaches to virtually all aspects of both domestic and global politics. The chapter considers some major strands of Marxist-influenced theory of direct relevance to global politics, including dependency theory, world-system theory, Gramscian theory, and Frankfurt School theory. It also discusses gender theory and compares postmodern/poststructural approaches to global politics with Critical Theory and constructivism in International Relations.

Abstract:
The sophists, so to speak, spearheaded enlightenment in Ancient Greece. By turning to subjectivism, they dethroned traditional, mostly religiously based morality; through their teaching, which included not least rhetoric and other techniques of self-assertion, they changed the political climate. This volume deals with the fascinating phenomenon of sophism by reconstructing the political thinking of sophists from the few existing fragments of Plato’s writings and his dialogues. This shows the range of their positions: The sophists advocated the idea of ‘social contracts’ as well as the right of the strongest. A comparative look at modernity and postmodernity shows just how relevant they are. Nietzsche, Foucault, Butler and even game theory fall back on patterns of thought that we find among ancient sophists. The authors of this volume, who are philosophers and political scientists, unfold the kaleidoscope of sophistic thought in both their time and ours. With contributions by Viktoria Bachmann, Thomas Buchheim, Bettina Fröhlich, Benjamin Hahn, Hendrik Hansen, Raul Heimann, Johannes Hoerlin, Vanessa Jansche, Christina Kast, Peter Kainz und Barbara Zehnpfennig.

Cartledge, Paul. Afterword. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190649890.003.0015.

Abstract:
In this chapter Paul Cartledge discusses the import and importance of historiography and history-writing in the present day. He sets his discussion in the widest and longest chronological, ideological and professional contexts, tracing his own historiographical engagements ultimately to Herodotus and Thucydides, and more proximately to Oxford (G.E.M. de Ste. Croix, Sir John Boardman) and Cambridge Universities. Or from the—admirable, imitable—ancient Greek concern with truth and authenticity to the—lamentable—preoccupation with “post-truth,” in both academic (postmodernist) and non- (or anti-) academic circles and media, today. Truth is neither single nor simple, in historiography any more- or any less-than in almost any other intellectual sphere, but that is not a reason, he contends, to give up on it either as a practical goal or as a moral value. Rather the opposite.
