Abstract:
The article aims to analyse the influence on socio-economic development of contemporary socio-economic changes, or – using terminology after John Naisbitt (1982) – main megatrends, primarily from the point of view of the situation and changes characterising the EU’s Member States. The specifics of these processes in the capitalist countries of Western Europe and in the former countries of so-called “people’s democracy” in East-Central Europe are the key element of this discussion. In the context of the spatial patterns identified, discussion centres around trends of: (1) transformation, (2) economic integration, (3) globalisation, and (4) postmodernisation. The first part presents a synthetic characterisation of megatrends distinguished, including as regards specific definitions and reasons for them to arise. The second, most important part of the work addresses the impacts of megatrends n socio-economic development and the specific nature of the process ongoing with the two spatial European patterns. The analysis conducted supports the contention that the megatrends described have played a key role in the shaping contemporary processes of socio-economic development. However, it is difficult to analyse the separate influences of each, given the way they interact in one bundle (external in relation to endogenous ocesses), permeating one another, and ensuring an influence exerted that is diversified both temporally and spatially. It is not easy to state that any specific social or economic changes result solely from one or other of the processes iscussed. Thus, the influence of these megatrends should be perceived synergically. More or less intensive processes of transformation are strengthened by economic integration and globalisation and give rise to a diversified range of postmodernisation changes. This perception is needed even more, as many researchers often consider these processes in a slightly different configuration (Dicken, 2015).

Abstract:
This paper examines a comprehensive, sociological explanation of the increasing recognition and use of alternative therapies-such as acupuncture—by Australian GPs. Noting the 'pragmatic' motives of clinical legitimacy and market demand, this paper goes on to explore the deeper roots of this phenomenon in a widespread cultural shift often termed postmodernisation. In this instance, this development involves a return to and commodification of nature, spirituality, tradition and pre-modern, often non-Western values and practices. These postmodernising trends are compatible with the holistic health values that underpin alternative therapies. The analytic inductive methodology employed involved the collection of data from 60 health care providers from the Brisbane metropolitan region. This paper, however, draws on only part of the data collected to provide empirical evidence of clinical 'postmodern' encounters of biomedically trained GPs (n=17) who employ alternative medicine in their daily practice.

Abstract:
‘Postmodernisation’ is introduced as a unifying concept for the set of processes which characterise the development of the space economy in the 1980s. The concept consists in effects which include: an increase in the unevenness of developmental potential between ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ British regions, growing polarisation in income and unemployment indices over space, a shift towards economies of scope by producers, a growing dynamism in localities with large service-class components displaying a privatistic consumption culture, and a growth of casualised and informal labour-market opportunities at the expense of ‘lifetime’ employment. This contrasts with a set of processes characteristic of what may be termed the ‘modernisation’ period circa 1945–1975 in which there was a relatively even spread of developmental opportunities across regional space, there was income and employment convergence, production pursued volume markets and economies of scale, collective consumption provision was socially predominant and employment was relatively secure. It is suggested that this change is consistent with but by no means fully explained by the recent monetarist shakeout of the British economy.

Abstract:
This paper tries to connect the values of religion, spirituality and work place of an accountant. One of the reasons why there is unethical attitude of an accountant is the disappearance of spirituality values. The disappearance of these values can be caused by work stress on either body or soul faced by an accountant. Spirituality Diversity Model has been proposed by Krishnakumar and Neck (2002) to replace spirituality values of religion so that spirituality concept become higher and holier than religion. Religion must be placed on spirituality values. Religion is the guidance for human to behave and act in the world. This model is named as Religion Values Model (RVM). The result of empirical research by Sulistiyo (2004) strengthens RVM that internal auditor spiritual values would improve integrity of profession and its organisation including capability to adapt and anticipate the transformation of organisation or company. In fast changing environment, accountant must have self identity. The modernisation and postmodernisation mind set must be responded critically and wisely. Not all that come from the West always gives positive effect. This self identity would strengthen existence of an accountant as better professionals. This self identity certainly could be found in religion values. Keywords: Accountant, Spirituality, Religion, RVM.

Judge, Anthony John. "Policing reconceptualised : the impact of globalisation and postmodernisation on the public police of England and Wales and the United States of America." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28789.

Full text
Abstract:
The problematic of any analysis of public policing is that it is primarily based on the premise that policing is a state centred activity. As public policing has always been associated with the political institutions of the state, and with the advent of modernity, it has reinforced the notion that policing is power exercised through control by the (Weberian) resort to the legitimate use of force. However, developments in the theories of Globalisation and postmodernisation suggest that policing cannot continue to be analysed, explained, theorised, or compared merely on this basis. This thesis examines the current contributions by Reiner (1992 & 2000), Johnston (2000), and Wright (2002) that assess the impact of either Globalisation or postmodernisation, or both. It also examines policy discourses, and discursive practices, that indicate the tensions within the public police and policing of England & Wales and the US that may be said to be associated with the processes of Globalisation and postmodernisation. The postmodern notions of power/knowledge, and the role of agency, are utilised, as well as the multidisciplinary approach of the new Political Sociology. A comparative historical approach to the concept of public policing is undertaken and case studies, including the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on 11th September 2001, are utilised in order to contextualise the conceptual developments as they unfold. In essence, this thesis argues for a greater appreciation of, and emphasis on, the processes of Globalisation and postmodernisation when policing is analysed. It concludes that policing should be reconceptualised as power through control of information and knowledge, rather than through the legitimate use of force. In consequence, there would be a move towards a more strategic appreciation of policing as a major factor in the political economy of the state at the local, national and global level.

Attwood, Steven Michael. "A future to pine for : transmodernist movement in Japan." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/95228.

Full text
Abstract:
The natural and nuclear disaster of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants of TEPCO and its continuing aftermath reflected the emotions and frustrations of Chernobyl. The incident reignited the debate on nuclear power and critical engagement with modern society. More than ever, critical discussions and seeking alternative solutions is as important. The thesis explores one such alternative to modernity called transmodernism, a theoretical concept that was formulated by Enrique Dussel and expanded in various directions from contemporary writers. Dussel's concept is the defining idea of his engagement with modernity and its relationship to the Other. The thesis will focus on one such contemporary interpretation of transmodernism. Paul H Ray and Sherry Ruth Anderson conceptualised transmodernism to describe the emergence of a new social group called the Cultural Creatives in the United States and Europe. The Cultural Creative's value system fuses modern values with traditional and indigenous values from across the globe. Their core values revolve around the sacredness of the environment, self-actualisation through spiritual growth, importance of family and friends, green economics, activism and altruism. They are a generation of people that evolved from new social movements and consciousness movement of the 1960s and have pushed these ideas further than before. The Cultural Creatives are a new wave coming from advanced industrialised nations in the West. Can this concept of transmodernism be applied outside Western advanced industrialised nations to other advanced industrialised nations? Through a literature study, the thesis will examine 11 Japanese people from Andy Couturier's A Different Kind of Luxury, a group named in the thesis as the Slow Culture Artists. The Slow Culture Artists live by principles of slow, self-sufficient living and incorporate traditional arts and practices. Their values are a fusion of modern values and traditional or alternative values from traditional Japan and countries abroad. The way they approach their lives can be reflected in the core values of the Cultural Creatives. The thesis will show how Ray's transmodernism can also be used to describe them and will discuss the importance of transmodernism in relations to critically engaging modernity. It will involve a theoretical background of transmodernism, a discussion of the Cultural Creatives and Slow Culture Artists and a comparison. From this comparison, the thesis will point to: 1) the significance of Asia in the concept of transmodernism, as the foundations of transcendentalism that constitutes the philosophical foundation of Cultural Creatives; 2) the problems of linearity in the discourse of modernity; 3) and the importance of dialogue in transmodernism, both as an 'internal dialogue' in their formation of their values and 'external dialogue' to discuss their relationship with modernity and the Other.

Abstract:
The second period stretches until the outbreak of the first Intifada in 1987, witnessing major social and political transformations in Palestinian society in Israel. Above all, Palestinian novels reflect Palestinian efforts to deal with the implications of their modernization in Israel. Themes regarding social differentiation (individualization, break-up of family structure, and abandoning social and religious institutions) are paramount. Moreover, the renewed contact with the Palestinians in the newly Occupied Territories (the West Bank and Gaza Strip) placed Palestinians in Israel in a perplexing situation. Despite the social reunification of both parts of the Palestinian nation, living on both sides of the Green Line, the two parts mutually acknowledged their distinctive political orientations, thus resulting in excluding Palestinian citizens in Israel from the Palestinian national struggle.
