Abstract:
October 31, 2017 1. The church is always in need of reforming according to the Word of God if it is to remain the Christian church. 2. A program for reforming the church requires a reaffirmation of sola Scriptura. 3. The church’s way of reading and understanding Scripture must be formed by Scripture itself, with Scripture interpreting Scripture. 4. Postmodern rejections of Scripture’s story line propose substitute narratives based on an a priori rejection of the divine inspiration of Scripture. 5. Postmodern methods of biblical interpretation reject sola Scriptura and replace it with a biblically alien system of hermeneutics. 6. The Scriptures offer assurance and confident hope, whereas postmodern interpretations are self-focused, resulting in relativism, uncertainty, and narcissism. 7. The interpretation of Scripture is not ultimately governed by the beliefs of a community, but rather by Scripture interpreting Scripture. Without this standard, the message of Scripture is relativized, resulting in ambiguity, and theological and spiritual chaos. 8. The rule of faith of Scripture compared with Scripture and Scripture interpreting Scripture is an objective standard for truth claims, meaningful discourse, and theological accountability. 9. Confessional orthodoxy is relevant and must be taken into account in biblical and theological interpretation. 10. No church confession is infallible, as this is true of Scripture alone. 11. ...

Abstract:
Abstract The article shows the actuality of Tadeusz Różewicz’s poetic confession: “I’m looking for a teacher and a master” in the postmodern world, dominated by mass media and multimedia, the world not guided by authorities. A young man is surrounded by chaos of mass culture, popular culture and cyberculture and he needs a tutor – master, he needs a tutor – guide, who will carry him through the world of cultural values specific for 21st century, emphasizing educational chances and dangers. The tutor should also inform his pupil about the importance of tradition for shaping one’s personality. From this perspective the tutoring is one of the most important challenge standing before the contemporary cultural education.

Abstract:
In the modern Russian writer Yuri Buida’s novel "Thief, Spy and Murderer" (2014), Christian discourse reveals itself at different levels of the text’s organization: genre (autobiography / confession), imaginative (marginal, mad / poor in spirit), motivic (imperfection of human nature / sin), plot (the hard way the son to the father / parable of the prodigal son) and others. On the one hand, Christian allusions in the novel are a manifestation of intertextual poetics, creating a cultural context for the perception of the postmodern text. On the other hand, the Christian "code" is the most relevant for the disclosure of the philosophical and psychological content of the novel, as in Christian categories expressed by the author's attitude to the leading cultural meanings of the era, to modern man, and to himself.

Warner, Chantelle. "Speaking from experience: narrative schemas, deixis, and authenticity effects in Verena Stefan's feminist confession Shedding." Language and Literature: International Journal of Stylistics 18, no. 1 (February 2009): 7–23. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0963947008099303.

Abstract:
Confessional writing, such as Swiss feminist Verena Stefan's autobiographical novel Shedding (1977) (German: Häutungen, 1977[1975]), is often praised as being an expression of a particular individual's authentic voice. This readerly concept of authentic voice has been under-examined in contemporary and postmodern narrative theories, which have tended to emphasize the abstractness, the disembodiedness of voice. In this article I draw from Monika Fludernik's concept of narrative schemas and from theories of deixis in literature within cognitive poetics in order to develop a model by which to explain the authenticity effects attributed to Stefan's book and to other works of testimonial and confessional literature. Through an analysis of stylistic features related to different aspects of deixis, I illustrate how deictic shifts may encourage readers to pay more attention to certain narrative parameters over others within the framework of familiar narrative schemas, thereby creating a greater sense of immersivity in the text and consequently the effect of a narrative that is being experienced even as it is being told.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the uses of black humour in women’s poetry after 1989, collected in the anthology Solistki (2009). The humour underlying these poems is subversive. A cruel joke may serve the purpose of individuation, provocation, or protection from suffering. Poetic narratives highlight the grotesque aspects of the world in order to uncover the stigmatising stereotypes of gender or the pressure of social norms grounded in lies. They become axiological gestures, stressing the independence of heroines. Tragicomic laughter is occasionally a form of casting a spell on reality, playing with the macabre – a protest against illness and death. A clownish mix of humour and terror consciously disrupts the logic of communication, showing the blurred limits of frank confession in postmodern poetry. Poetic works by the ‘female soloists’ are intertextual, autotelic, polystyle. They are characterised by an exaggerated creativity of imagery that refl ects a paradoxical, fl uid reality. Poetry by women moves from a poetic joke to a serious existential and philosophical statement.

Abstract:
The unity, autonomy and autoreferentiality of the representational model upon which the uniqueness of the communicational concept of postmodern mass-media rests, as well as interactivity within the framework of which, assisted by the fictional Other, the modus subsistendi of a spectator is being constituted, represents the main subject of the critical discourse of the following essay. The thesis which is here proposed is that it is possible to identify and scrutinize a fundamental difference between the generative core of meaning and the effects which the reality show The Big Brother produces within the Euro-American cultural circle on the one hand and within the cultural context of the societies involved in a process of assimilation of axiological paradigms originating from that circle on the other hand. The secularization of the techniques of confession which manifest themselves in a number of aspects of this programme transforms itself in these societies into a self-induced adoption of traditionalist mechanisms of control and their perpetuating in a form of illusory permissiveness and anti-dogmatic social praxis.

Abstract:
AbstractHanif Kureishi, an acclaimed contemporary British writer of Pakistani origin, is known to the Romanian reading public primarily through the translations (under the aegis of the Humanitas publishing house) of his novels Intimacy, The Buddha of Suburbia, The Nothing, Gabriel’s Gift and Something to Tell You. One of the foremost representatives of British postcolonial literature, Kureishi masterfully, and at times shockingly, explores the postmodern urban world of human desolation, loneliness and alienation, with the surgical precision and mercilessness of a “terrorist”, as he himself describes the writer and his artistic mission in an interview. Intimacy, in a classic Proustian or Joycean manner, offers a glimpse into twenty-four hours in the life of a middle-aged Londoner, Jay, who fed up with the monotony and routine of his marriage, decides to leave his wife and children in order to pursue a passionate sexual relationship with a younger lover. The novel thematizes such concerns as the clash between traditional values and (post)modern society, between individualism / narcissism and moral duty, morality versus amorality / immorality, and the inevitable alienation of the individual who experiences these conflicts. The present paper aims at offering a reading of Kureishi’s text starting from the writer’s claim that “I’ve never had any desire to be good. (…) I don’t like goodness particularly. I like passion.” From the vantage point of this confession we shall proceed to analyze Intimacy not as a moral handbook, but as the eternal plight of the human soul, caught between the painfulness of duty and the irresistible call of passion.

Contemporary practices of recreational and confessional travel and visit of sacred sites of various denominations focus multitude of orientations and attitudes regarding religious cultural heritage. Postmodern tourist experience of organisation and research encompasses wide space from local to global, from material to invisible, form forgotten to live heritage, and from sustainable to dynamic, from subjective to generally valid, acknowledged, and human in religious culture and everyday life. Transmission of traditional values and rituals, as well as actualisation of cultural practices basic for religions, confessions, and communities would be impossible without sacral topoi as a focus of tourist interests, flow of people and dynamic site exploitation, and without development of the reflection on those processes. Abstract:
The creative component of my project is a conteporary, confessional novel, Refrain. The narrator, Jake, has spent his youth chasing a life that matched his dreams - first as a would-be rock star and then by fleeing to India in search of exotic adventures with his girlfriend. Now he returns alone to the suburban backwater he'd tried so hard to escape, ready for stability and responsibility. However, his attempts to reinvent himself in this world of chronic unemployment and limited horizons are thrown into confusion by old friends, estranged fmaily members, an unresolved attachment, and by his musical successor - a volatile young woman with her own problems, who draws him back to things he'd rather forget and towards a future he isn't ready to face. Refain is a story of idealism and desire, fading hopes and unexpected opportunities, long-distance love and short-sightedness. The exegetical component of my project investigates the term 'portmodern confession' as an i ntersection of the confessional narrative mode and postmodernism, and its application to two recent texts: The sportswriter by Richard Ford, and The remains of teh day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Meiring, Lieze. "Exploring ubuntu language in bridging gaps : a narrative reflection on discussions between members of two Reformed Churches in a rural town of South Africa." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61580.

Full text
Abstract:
Discussions with members of the Dutch Reformed Church and the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa in Ohrigstad, illustrate the possibilities of ubuntu language in dealing with misunderstanding and distrust. This research utilises a narrative approach, based on a postmodern epistemology and pastoral practical theology that explores ubuntu language as a helpful discourse. It engages the context of these two churches in Ohrigstad and investigates experiences and challenges within the local community. The local experiences are described against the broader history of the Dutch Reformed Church and the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa, which the Ohrigstad churches are imbedded in. Individual narrative research conversations with church members in Ohrigstad display a longstanding relationship with stories of trust and distrust. This culminates into a group discussion that explores the role of ubuntu language - and at times the lack thereof - in the concrete relationship between these two faith communities as an expression of recent South African history. The conversations offer local knowledge which displays both unique outcomes by strengthening identity, unleashing potential, celebrating diversity, awakening solidarity, revealing humanity, bolstering responsibility and enhancing Christianity, and it also deconstructs oppressive discourses including race and otherness, rich and poor, and language. The research offers an approach to deal with distrust and misunderstanding on grass roots level, using insights gained from ubuntu language.

Abstract:
Although there are a lot of popular books available on the subject of hope I still believe that there is a need for another study on the phenomenon of hope. Especially where proper exegesis and a multidiscipline approach are taken into account. In this study I’ve researched the effect of a society in transition on hope. I suspect that the changes since 1994 have a significant influence on the attitude, thought and behaviour of the Afrikaner especially. To come to such a conclusion the study take theories of change in Sociology into account. Some information were gathered from papers. The reason for that is the influence papers have on the spirit of society, and in this case its influence on people’s hope. Unfortunately one of the conclusions is that a lack of hope can very well be one of the consequences of the changes in society since 1994. The contemporary study is followed by a study on hope in Paul’s letter to the Romans. The background of the author, the congregation and the theology of the letter were taken in consideration. In most of the cases I’ve used the verses in the letter where the word hope was used. Surprisingly there is quite a comparison between the letter of Romans and society today as far as the reasons that causes hopelessness. Therefore Romans can be of great value to give hope in a disorientated society. Until now we know that there is a lack of hope in society, and that Romans give us reason to hope, but what is the person looking like that we want to communicate with? The study on post modernity show us how this “new” paradigm looks like. Post modernity is very different to modernism. The latest paradigm is universal and no one and nothing can escape it. Social sciences, the arts, economy, science itself and the theology were largely influenced by post modernity. With its larger emphasis on spirituality it creates wonderful opportunities for preaching. On the other side though, one should also keep its threats in mind, especially the proneness to relativism and New Age. In the last chapter I use all the information and conclusions of the previous chapters to get to a homiletic strategy for a postmodern context. The most important part of this chapter is to conclude that confession is a suitable hermeneutical and homiletical tool for preaching in post modernity. There is no need to prove confession, it is about something that is believed. The Bible therefore is still as relevant as ever. Communication strategies are included to guide the preacher in the most effective way when preaching in a postmodern context. The chapter ends with certain specific homiletic contents from the Roman letter that can be used today. We can know for certain that hopelessness is part of our society today. However we’ve got the promise of Romans 15:13 that God stays our God of hope. Our tasks are to posision us homiletically, hermeneutically and strategically in such a way that we give our faith the best possible chance.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the message of the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, which is crucial for Christianity and its relevant hermeneutical approach. In the first chapter we analyze the contemporary hermeneutical context of the message within the Hellenistic and Hebrew cultures. In the second chapter we present an analysis of pre-Pauline faith confessions, Paul's texts and synoptic Gospels focused on targeted formulating of the message for respective communities and their cultural background. The last chapter wants to present some contemporary relevant hermeneutical approaches to this message. One of them could be the so called mythmaking, which emphasizes the necessity of permanent updating of accepted opinions, messages and realities. We can observe the mythmaking process already with the New Testament authors and each and also our generation is expected to bring the message about the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth to future generations in a relevant way. Abstract:
Chapter 5 discusses nostalgia and avant-garde art in Bratislava with a case study of the musical group Požoň sentimentál. This chapter argues that although nostalgia is a feature of the postcommunist urban scene, Bratislava residents and many other Central Europeans are not nostalgic. Drawing on the ideas of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, the chapter proposes that Bratislava avant-gardists make postmodern reparative readings. The chapter details how during the 1990s and early 2000s, Požoň sentimentál dramatized the city as it had existed a century earlier; alongside older writers and performers such as Egon Bondy, Požoň sentimentál explored forgotten motifs of the city’s history. The chapter describes how the group’s humorous enactments provoked controversy around the artistic canon, played with the city’s sonic environment, and prompted discussion over representations of the city’s former ethnic and confessional groups, especially the Jewish population decimated by the Holocaust.
