Full textThe number of unwanted pregnancies has not decreased in recent years and this should be addressed. Emergency contraception may be effective when used correctly having the advantage that it can be used after an episode of unprotected sexual intercourse (when regular contraception has failed or was not used). In this research project I set out to explore some of the major reasons why there are still many unwanted pregnancies in Australia. I decided to focus on the use and non-use of emergency contraception, e.g. emergency contraception pill (ECP) “method failures” are not well understood because the actual mechanisms of action are still unclear. There is evidence ECP can effectively interfere with follicle growth and ovulation. It is much less clear is whether ECP is able to interfere with fertilization and implantation, in a way, which may make it acceptable to those who have strong religious beliefs in fertilization being the start of new life. Emergency contraception has the potential to prevent many unwanted pregnancies when unprotected intercourse has occurred. It has relatively high efficacy in many studies, but true method failures are not well understood. By contrast, many unwanted pregnancies occur for “social reasons” where emergency contraception has not been used. I set out to study changes in knowledge and usage of emergency contraception in these groups of Australian women seeking termination of pregnancy: 1. Before a dedicated emergency contraception pill (ECP) pack (Postinor) became available in Australia 2. One year after dedicated ECP became available on prescription 3. One year after the ECP pack became available “over the counter” without prescription. Ninety-nine women were recruited during their presentation with a request for ECP at the six Family Planning Clinics in Australia. All women took LNG 1.5mg in a single dose during the clinic consultation. A blood sample was taken immediately prior to ingestion of the ECP for estimation of serum LH, oestradiol and progesterone levels to calculate the day of the menstrual cycle. Based on these endocrine data we estimated the timing of ovulation to within a ±24-hour period with an accuracy of around 80%. Women were followed up 4-6 weeks later to ascertain pregnancy status. The effectiveness of ECP when taken before and after ovulation was determined. Three women in this study became pregnant despite taking the ECP (pregnancy rate 3%). All three women who became pregnant had unprotected intercourse between day -1 and 0 and took the ECP on day +2, based on endocrine data. Day zero was taken as ovulation day. Among seventeen women who had intercourse in the fertile period of the cycle and took the ECP after ovulation occurred (on day +1 to +2) we could have expected 3 or 4 pregnancies, based on Wilcox et al data. Three pregnancies were observed. Among 34 women who had intercourse on days –5 to –2 of the fertile period, and took ECP before or around ovulation, four pregnancies could have been expected, but none were observed. The major discrepancies between women’s self-report of stage of the cycle and the dating calculation based on endocrine data were observed in this study. These data are supportive of the concept that the LNG ECP has little or no effect on post-ovulation events, but is highly effective before ovulation. Our interpretation of the data in terms of timing of treatment relative to ovulation may explain why EC with LNG works sometimes and fails at other times. A larger study is needed to prove this hypothesis. To investigate other reasons for such a high rate of unwanted pregnancy, which probably has a larger impact we looked into womens knowledge of and attitude towards ECP. Seven hundred and eighteen women participated in this study by answering a questionnaire consisting of 15 questions on their demographic and reproductive characteristics as well as the knowledge about the ECP, e.g. 208 women were enrolled before the ECP was marketed in Australia in 2001, 308 after it was marketed and 202 after it became available over the counter (Group 1, 2, and 3, respectively). We found that the participants who have heard about ECP were significantly younger (p<0.005). The mean age of women who have never heard about of ECP was 29.8 years compared to 26.3 years in women who have heard about ECP. More women were aware about the ECP after it became available over the counter. Women in group 2 had higher educational level in comparison to women in group 2 and 3 (p<0.005). There was significant trend in increased use of ECP in women of higher educational level (p<0.005). The use of ECP did not increase significantly with improved availability and access to the ECP amongst women presenting for termination of pregnancy. Wider availability of he ECP pack in Australia and an easier access to it has increased women’s awareness about the ECP. However, the use of ECP has not increased. This study provides better understanding of mechanism of action of LNG ECP and an explanation to the method failure. It also reveals poor knowledge about ECP despite its wider availability and accessibility. Improving these is a worldwide challenge for family planners and all health professionals.

Full textDaniel Catán's opera Il Postino was primarily inspired by Chilean author Antonio Skarmeta's 1985 novel Ardiente Paciencia, the 1994 Italian-language film Il Postino , and the poetry of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. The opera Il Postino was prepared and given its world premiere in Los Angeles in 2010. This initial premiere was followed by national premieres of the same production in Austria, France, Chile, and still to come, Spain in July 2013. Catán's sudden death in April2011 prior to the opera's opening in Paris stunned music lovers worldwide. Now recognized as his final complete opera, Il Postino represents the pinnacle of his effort to add Spanish-language opera to the international canon. This project report explores the reception of Il Postino both prior to and in the wake of Catán's death, introduces themes emphasized in the work, and offers observations on performance interpretation informed by the original production.

Staff members supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities often provide the primary supervision and direct instruction to those served. These services are often provided in locations with limited resources and funding, especially within adult services. Supervisors in these settings must ensure necessary documentation and job responsibilities are completed in order to meet regulatory requirements and ensure appropriate care and treatment for individuals’ served. By providing simple and cost effective feedback, supervisors can ensure the staff members are meeting job expectations while ensuring the individuals’ served are having their needs met. This study implemented a reversal design in two separate program rooms within an adult day program to examine the effects of posted group feedback, posted group feedback paired with goal setting, as well as the effect of the placement of the postings in a conspicuous versus non conspicuous location with staff completion of required daily documentation. Results in both rooms indicated that posting group feedback alone did not have as much effect on staff performance unless paired with goal setting. The posting locations in each room also did not seem to have an effect on staff performance.

SKINNI is an application that allows users to access, annotate, and share contextually relevant information from smart digital kiosks in public spaces. These platforms will not only enable information exchange from public spaces, but will also support more complex tasks like enterprise integration, informal collaboration, and public need servicing. To test the effectiveness of our system, we deployed SKINNI on four kiosks throughout MIT CSAIL. Usage statistics that we have gathered suggest that SKINNI has been well-received by both lab members and visitors. In short, SKINNI has contributed to the utility of ubiquitous computing in transitional spaces like elevator lobbies, hallways, and lounges.

Three interventions using public posting and review of client data in order to increase the effectiveness of staff implementation of functional communication training (FCT) within a school setting were compared. These interventions included: public review and posting of client data, public review and posting of client data paired with a coded shape for each staff member, and public review and posting of client data paired with a coded shape for each staff member with added reinforcement incentives. There were three student participants and three staff participants. For two student participants, FCT increased from baseline through intervention phases and staff were more likely to implement functional communication training during the final phase where reinforcement was added for the staff. Added reinforcement increased staff implementation of FCT paired with public review and posting of client data. For the third participant, results varied, but staff implemented the most during the public review and posting phases compared to baseline and reached a mean of 10 responses per session. There was also a negative correlation between functional communication responses (FCR) and challenging behaviors for two participants. This supports previous research and demonstrates the value of functional communication training as a behavior intervention tactic.

The aim of this work is to estimate an equilibrium job search model with heterogeneity in productivities of firms using microdata from the Monthly Employment Survey (PME) collected in 2009. The model is estimated for the six metropolitan regions covered by the PME. Moreover, it is considered two mechanisms of wage determination: wage posting by monopsonistic firms and as a outcome of a Nash bilateral bargaining. To estimate the model, we use the non-parametric method developed by Bontemps, Robin and van den Berg (2000). There is a significant heterogeneity among the structural parameters estimated for the six metropolitan regions. Furthemore, the model with wage determination through bargaining show plausible results and not rejected by the data.

In the past decade, a fundamental research topic in the information systems (IS) discipline has been to examine the value of online platforms on businesses, society, and consumers, notably in the form of improved efficiency in information sharing, consumer engagement, and increased sales. However, the risks rooted in online platforms may cannibalize the value created, which have received limited attention in the literature and practice. In my dissertation, I attempt to fill this gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the risks of online platforms from the angle of these three main entities in the ecosystem with three separate yet related essays. The first essay focuses on the risks for businesses that leverage social media platforms, and assesses how their posting on social media fan pages affects consumers’ decision to purchase and unfollow from the firms. The second essay focuses on the risks of fake news on social media and how social media platforms may use identity verification to reduce online anonymity and combat this increasingly critical social problem. The third essay focuses on estimating the risks of using monetary incentives to motivate consumers to write online product reviews, and examines how such strategy may affect product sales. Our studies have theoretical and practical implications for designing effective online platform information systems.

It supports the assumption of a relationship between the symbolic system, the linguistic one and the cognitive one which, according to the socialization modes, led to the interpretations differentiated from the situations of training, as of the nursery school. For that, she studies the manner whose pupils of great section, resulting from contrasted social environments, build the significance of the plurisemiotized systems of a seldom studied school object, the didactic poster. In support of an analytical method relating to talks of pupils confronted with this kind of support, the analysis of the linguistic phenomena cognitivo and their variations leads to results showing that the modes of interpretation of the pupils are different according to their capacity to symbolize and to use the language in its elaborative function. The originality of this thesis is due to the link that it makes it possible to establish, starting from configurations of subject-social-interpreting, between the modes of interpretation privileged by the pupils and the representations which they are made of the objects of knowing, in the context of the trainings first

Abstract In the present work a quality evaluation of a better machining strategy with 5 axes is done, depending on the geometry of the desired component. The machining strategies are then compared to 5 continuous axes and 5 positional axes, having as comparison parameters the machining time and a surface nish quality of the component. Using case studies, the in uence of the machining trajectories in the productive times is studied, as well as the in uence of the xation devices of the components. It was also studied the in uence of the xation system of the small and medium sized inserts, in the surface nish, in the geometric and dimensional tolerance, and in what way is in uenced the number of tightenings necessary for the total machining of the due components. It can be concluded that for machining small and medium size inserts, machining at 5 positional axes is better than machining at 5 continuous axes, except for contour nishing using the swarf strategy, although this strategy is dependent on the geometry of the component.

Social Media Activism (SMA) has become a staple of almost every modern-day movement around the world. The appeal of this tool is obvious in its prevalence, and diversity of uses. Social media enables any voice, anywhere to be heard by anyone around the world including those that have the power to implement necessary changes globally. However, the world is still yet to discover how it can be used most effectively and avoid the pitfalls of becoming slacktivism instead of activism. Many users participate in movements because they are trendy as opposed to passion for the changes sought which leads to inconsistency and a decrease in impact. Other users underutilize the tools or incorrectly use them. There are various reasons why movements fail, and most of those reasons stem from the way movement participants use tools for activism. As a result of this, in order to ensure that current and future movements can operate at maximum effectiveness, the most important aspect of movements to be studied is the participants and consistency. This thesis sheds light on how to engage participants as best as possible by analysing the use of Facebook by participants in the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the Catalan Independence Movement, whether the movements have been successful thus far through an analysis of Legal changes, and also through an examination of the consistency of the movements over time. These two movements seem at face value to be incredibly different which is good for coming to an unbiased conclusion, however they have many similarities in that both have had various degrees of success over the years and seek both social and legal changes that will greatly transform their respective societies. The Black Lives Matter movement was created to combat the wrongful killings of Black Men and women in the United States as well as the laws that allow the killers to get away with murder and unfair treatment in general. The Catalan Independence Movement was created to seek independence of the region of Catalunya from Spain. Both movements gained international recognition over the years and consist of members who are extremely passionate about the causes, achieving the transformations they seek, and securing a better future for those affected. By comparing the results of the research for each of these two extremely different movements with extremely different participants in terms of geography, ethnicity, age, etc., and different goals, and then noting the similarities in the results, it is quite clear that the identified patterns in consistency, responses from participants and even the legal ramifications to some extent, show an obvious correlation between what has been effective in the Black Lives Matter movement and in the Catalan Independence Movement. As a result of this, this thesis sheds much needed light on how to utilize Facebook most effectively as a tool for activism particularly through communication, organization and mobilization in Social Movements. That insight will help current and upcoming movements to achieve the social and political transformation they seek and ultimately aid in transforming the world.

Full textProject Management is multidisciplinary in nature; it involves a number of activities and requires the project manager to possess a wide variety of competences. This thesis aims to investigate which competences organizations currently require from project managers. In particular the focus of this research is to examine and contrast the “soft” (interpersonal) and “hard” (technical) competences required by the job market and to find out if organizations recognize the importance of both of them or if they pay special attention to one of them. A total of 50 online job advertisements from different industries and countries were analyzed using content analysis in order to determine what competences are valued by employers. Furthermore, 9 semi-structured interviews were conducted with project management academics and practitioners in order to provide a more in depth study and to allow triangulation between the findings. The results indicate that some competences are more valued than others. Communication, project integration management and scope management are the top three competences required by employers. The results also suggest that employers, academics and practitioners are aware of the need to balance hard and soft competences.

This thesis has as its object of study and research analyzing people with no religious belief in the cyberspace through the virtual communities, mainly within Orkut, for being the social network used by most Brazilians as a means of disseminating ideas and defend these ones in virtual space. The research questions are: How does the changing from Brazilian religious hegemony to pluralism happen and develop? What are its causes and effects? Is the current religious situation a crisis or a new institutional enhancement? How is cyberspace used by a non-institutional religion? What is God s interface on the Orkut social network? What comprehension can we have about the postings of no religious Internet users on Orkut? The main hypothesis shows that people with no religious belief are a heterogeneous group but not necessarily marked by disbelief, these ones can be classified as: No religion syncretic people, people who move from one church to another, skeptic people about the institution, the agnostics and the atheists. The cyberspace enables a social, cultural and religious reconfiguration of the same ones with a religious breaking within the traditional and no institutional religious system, but the religiosity is still maintained. The first part of thesis analyses the Brazilian religious changes that led to the emerging of people who have no religious belief, that is, the transition of the religious hegemony to the pluralism. Religious changes were worked, which led from the catholic supremacy to the religious pluralism until the emerging of people who have no religious belief in the postmodernity situation process. The second of thesis research part studies people who have no religious belief in the virtual communities, as Orkut in a special way, to understand the action of this social network

Full textLast years, e-recruitment expansion has led to the multiplication of web channels dedicated to job postings. In an economic context where cost control is fundamental, assessment and comparison of recruitment channel performances have become necessary. The purpose of this work is to develop a decision-making tool intended to guide recruiters while they are posting a job on the Internet. This tool provides to recruiters the expected performance on job boards for a given job offer. First, we identify the potential predictors of a recruiting campaign performance. Then, we apply text mining techniques to the job offer texts in order to structure postings and to extract information relevant to improve their description in a predictive model. The job offer performance predictive algorithm is based on a hybrid recommender system, suitable to the cold-start problem. The hybrid system, based on a supervised similarity measure, outperforms standard multivariate models. Our experiments are led on a real dataset, coming from a job posting database
