Abstract:
There are several options how to configure Web Map Service using several map servers. GeoServer is one of most popular map servers nowadays. GeoServer is able to read data from several sources. Very popular data source is ESRI Shapefile. It is well documented and most of software for geodata processing is able to read and write data in this format. Another very popular data store is PostgreSQL/PostGIS object-relational database. Both data sources has advantages and disadvantages and user of GeoServer has to decide which one to use. The paper describes comparison of performance of GeoServer Web Map Service when reading data from ESRI Shapefile or from PostgreSQL/PostGIS database.

PostgreSQL with PostGIS extension plays one of the major roles in many complex GIS frameworks. There exist many possibilities how to access such data storage, but most of them might be seen as not simple for new users. In this paper we would like to introduce the concept of the implementation of a web based PostGIS client application. The main emphasis of described solution is placed on simplicity and straightforward approach for visualisation of general SQL queries.

Abstract:
Abstract. Three-dimensional (3D) raster data (also named voxel) is important sources for 3D geo-information applications, which have long been used for modelling continuous phenomena such as geological and medical objects. Our world can be represented in voxels by gridding the 3D space and specifying what each grid represents by attaching every voxel to a real-world object. Nature-triggered disasters can also be modelled in volumetric representation. Unlike point cloud, it is still a lack of wide research on how to efficiently store and manage such semantic 3D raster data. In this work, we would like to investigate four different data layouts for voxel management in open-source (spatial) DBMS - PostgreSQL/PostGIS, which is suitable for efficiently retrieving and quick querying. Besides, a benchmark has been developed to compare various voxel data management solutions concerning functionality and performance. The main test dataset is the groups of buildings of UNSW Kensington Campus, with 10cm resolution. The obtained storage and query results suggest that the presented approach can be successfully used to handle voxel management, semantic and range queries on large voxel dataset.

Abstract:
Incorporating data stored in a geographical information system (GIS) within the development of hydraulic simulation models is crucial for operating, updating, and hence redesigning water supply systems (WSS). Building and updating hydraulic models can be both time and resource consuming; moreover, the need to update infrastructure cadastral information makes the model itself outdated. In addition, typical dispersion of data across several databases requires extra effort to maintain the whole system and ensure it is properly assembled. Albeit there are some GIS-based hydraulic modelling solutions available, they typically use external connections to assemble all components resulting in additional costs and less flexibility. In order to be able to establish a single fully integrated data model towards global characterization of a WSS and associate hydraulic simulation, this paper proposes the specific implementation of an EPANET 2 model in PostgreSQL along with PostGIS extension. The system developed enables the construction of the model, hydraulic simulation, and storage of results within a single database. Required procedures and functions were coded either in pgSQL or Python and their execution were carried out using SQL statements. Finally, a case study was selected in order to test the system proposed. Results show that an integrated approach indeed allows the expedited creation of more realistic hydraulic models based on the stored cadastral information.

Geography Markup Language (GML) was developed to standardize the representation of geographical data in extensible markup language (XML), which facilitates geographical information exchange and sharing. Increasing amounts of geographical data are being presented in GML as its use widens, raising the question of how to store GML data efficiently to facilitate its management and retrieval. We analyze topology data in GML and propose storing nonspatial and spatial data from GML documents in spatial databases (e.g, Oracle Spatial, DB2 Spatial, and PostGIS/PostgreSQL.). We then use an example to analyze the topology relation.

Abstract:
Handling of alarms on network nodes is a process that requires network technicians to visit several sources of information before they can draw a conclusion on the reason behind the alarm. By visiting several different sources of information, it may be difficult to establish a good overview of the problem. This study is made on request by the Swedish traffic authority Trafikverket to ease the workload of the co-workers at the department network operations center (NOC). A web application has been developed to amalgamate the most common sources a network technician visits. The web application presents the amalgamated information in a way that eases the troubleshooting process for the network technicians. The web application also indicates what the most common reasons are, depending on which kind of alarm that is being handled. Due to the large availability of different software it can be difficult for a developer to choose a suitable software. Even if some are excluded based on the purpose of the development there are still many choices. This study emphasizes that the software NodeJS, PostgreSQL and PostGIS works well together and is a suitable choice when creating a web application that needs to use spatial functions. To evaluate the web application a user test was conducted were nine participants, 47% of the personnel at Trafikverket NOC participated. The result shows positive results in both how well the web application filled its purpose by indicating possible reasons for a network alarm as well as the participants experiences with the web application. In the user test 100% of the participants claim that the web application would save them time and the three most popular features were polygons of electricity distributors, real time weather data and an amalgamation of internal data in one place.

Brazil is the fourth largest swine producer and exporter in world, with swine farming being very representative in the national scenario. This production, however, implies generation of waste and this needs to be mitigated. One of the alternatives to reduce the impact caused by pig waste is the application of anaerobic biodigestion treatment, obtaining biogas and digestate as by-products. Digestate can be used as biofertilizer, generating a new product. In this context, this work proposes to define a geographic database from different sources about the national production of swine and to estimate, supported by calculation methodology defined in activities of the BiogasFert Network, the respective production of waste and biogas. These results were provided in an web system using GeoServer map server. In addition, a methodology was defined in this work to identify areas of permanent preservation in top of hills, based on the Brazilian new forest code published since 2012, and in classes of declivity unfit for fertilizer inputs (regions with slopes greater than 45%). As result, a total of 60,879,431 km² (0,72%) of areas considered inapt for the application of fertilizers in the national territory were identified. Another objective of this work was to highlight the use of free GIS software and its processing power, since the metrics applied here were elaborated using exclusively open source software.

Wong, James C. "Use of the general transit feed specification (GTFS) in transit performance measurement." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50341.

Full text
Abstract:
Until recently, transit data lacked a common data format that could be used to share and integrate information among multiple agencies. In 2005, however, Google worked with Tri-Met in Oregon to create the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), an open data format now used by all transit agencies that participate in Google Maps. GTFS feeds contain data for scheduled transit service including stop and route locations, schedules and fare information. The broad adoption of GTFS by transit agencies has made it a de facto standard. Those agencies using it are able to participate in a host of traveler services designed for GTFS, most notably transit trip planners. Still, analysts have not widely used GTFS as a data source for transit planning because of the newness of the technology. The objectives of this project are to demonstrate that GTFS feeds are an efficient data source for calculating key transit service metrics and to evaluate the validity of GTFS feeds as a data source. To demonstrate GTFS feeds’ analytic potential, the author created a tool called GTFS Reader, which imports GTFS feeds into a database using open-source products. GTFS Reader also includes a series of queries that calculate metrics like headways, route lengths and stop-spacing. To evaluate the validity of GTFS feeds, annual vehicle revenue miles and hours from the National Transit Database (NTD) are compared to the calculated values from agencies whose GTFS feeds are available. The key finding of this work is that well-formed GTFS feeds are an accurate representation of transit networks and that the method of aggregation presented in this research can be used to effectively and efficiently calculate metrics for transit agencies. The daily aggregation method is more accurate than the weekly aggregation method, both introduced in this thesis, but practical limitations on processing time favor the weekly method. The reliability of GTFS feed data for smaller agencies is less conclusive than that of larger agencies because of discrepancies found in smaller agencies when their GTFS-generated metrics were compared to those in the NTD. This research will be of particular interest to transit and policy analysts, researchers and transit planners.

The establishment of more efficient management and operating approaches of a water supply system, cannot be done nowadays without the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This fact is due to the spatial nature of data used and produced by the water utility. Within a GIS, the data could be used to develop and construct a hydraulic models. These are fundamental tools to support the design and operation of a water supply system. The construction and maintenance of a hydraulic model can be both a time and resource consuming process. The water supply data updating process renders the hydraulic model obsolete so less accurate. Using two databases, one for the GIS and another for the model, requires additional data updating efforts. In spite of the existence of hydraulic modeling softwares capable of connecting and importing GIS data, these solutions represent additional costs and may have lower flexibility to water utility existing procedures or sustaining future needs. This MSc dissertation aimed to design and implement a data model capable of characterizing water system’s main components and to integrate EPANET based hydraulic model into the open source database management system (DBMS) PostgreSQL, along with spatial extension PostGIS. The developed system is capable of assembling a hydraulic model, running a simulation and storing the results in a single database. The implemented procedures were coded in pgSQL or Python and can be executed using SQL instructions. This permits the user to choose among different front-ends or GIS Desktop solutions. Finally, a case study was conducted where the developed system was applied to Casal Ribeiro water system (Ourém), managed by Be Water S.A.. The implemented system showed that an integrated approach provides a fast method to create a hydraulic model using stored GIS data, in mapping results, and in creating queries or views using the DBMS capabilities.

Abstract:
AbstractCrowdsourcing together with Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) are currently part of a broader concept – Citizens Science. The methods provide information on existing geospatial data or is a part of data collection from geolocated devices. They enable opening parts of scientific work to the general public. DataBio Crowdsourcing Solution is a combination of the SensLog server platform and HSLayers web and mobile applications. SensLog is a server system for managing sensor data, volunteered geographic information and other geospatial data. Web and mobile applications are used to collect and visualize SensLog data. SensLog data model builds on the Observations & Measurements conceptual model from ISO 19156 and includes additional sections, e.g., for user authentication or volunteered geographic information (VGI) collection. It uses PostgreSQL database with PostGIS for data storage and several API endpoints.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates how the visualization of sensor resources on a 3D Web-based globe organized by level-of-detail can enhance search and exploration of information by easing the formulation of geospatial queries against the metadata of sensor systems. The case study provides an approach inspired by geographical mashups in which freely available functionality and data are flexibly combined. The authors use PostgreSQL, PostGIS, PHP, X3D-Earth, and X3DOM to allow the Web3D standard and its geospatial component to be used for visual exploration and level-of-detail control of a dynamic scene. The proposed approach facilitates the dynamic exploration of the Sensor Web and allows the user to seamlessly focus in on a particular sensor system from a set of registered sensor networks deployed across the globe. In this chapter, the authors present a prototype metadata exploration system featuring levels-of-detail for a multi-scaled Sensor Web and use it to visually explore sensor data of weather stations.
