Abstract:
This article examines some of the different mappings of the globe by ecocritics and postcolonalists and the role of militarization as a constitutive part of both globalization and planetary thought. It discusses the historical connection between ecological thought and radioactive militarism and describes how postcolonial approaches can contribute an important critique of universalist modes of globalism. It also explores postcolonial ecocriticism’s emphasis on discourses of alterity and difference.

Abstract:
The chapter presents an overview of postcolonialism, outlining some of the key arguments, concepts, and contributing figures. It examines the major theoretical limitations of postcolonialism, in particular its overreliance on models of agency, difference, and secular models of social reality all of which are grounded in a causal negativity. Postcolonial studies has also largely missed the strategic importance of new developments in the study of religion due to the un-interrogated nature of ‘religion’ as an analytic category in postcolonial theory. This limitation is remedied to some extent by recent developments in the study of religion: e.g. (i) problematizion of religion as a cultural universal; and (ii) the critiques of ‘religion’ as a category manufactured by the modern state, and therefore intrinsically tied to notions of the secular. The chapter deploys a case study of Hinduism to show the continuing effects of postcolonialism and its importance for the study of religion.

Abstract:
The chapter traces key moments in the development of postcolonialism, principally through an engagement with the work of Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Among its principal contributions are its accounts of orientalism as a strategy of Western power/knowledge in relation to the rest of the world and of hybridity as its consequence, besides a considerable investment in the fraught project of taking the subaltern seriously. The chapter outlines Marxist objections to postcolonialism, namely that its poststructuralist-influenced critique of essentialism both fails to offer a historically compelling account of anticolonial resistance and undermines possibilities for resistance to contemporary capitalism. The third section of the chapter suggests that debates between Marxism and poststructuralism are anticipated in the archives of anti-colonial liberation, in which nativist essentialism, universal humanism, and deconstruction are all visible as strategies of resistance to power. Postcolonialism today is a divided house, bearing the inheritance of anti-colonial thought in its dissonant entirety.
