Abstract:
Abstract Between 1999 and 2004, with reverberations until 2011, several Moluccan islands (Indonesia) faced violent clashes between Christians and Muslims. Based on 79 interviews, this article seeks to understand how people from both religious groups look back at the conflict, 12 years after the Malino II peace treaty was signed in 2002. We identified three major conflict-related themes that continued to come to the fore during the interviews: explanations about causes of the conflict, religion-related justifications of violence and miracle stories. Most interviewees indicated that the causes of the conflict were non-religious, but rather political. Religion-related language however was frequently used to justify violence as self-defense while miracles-stories were often part of war-narratives. Looking back, Christians and Muslims still understood their communities as injured and victimized. The ‘right to protect’ one’s community as a threatened Christian or Muslim community prevailed in most stories although the source of this threat was not always clear.

Abstract:
The paper presents an important part of the Soviet memory policy in Germany in 1945–1949 – the activities of the Soviet military to identify and record the graves, as well as to establish the identity of the Soviet citizens who have died in captivity – the prisoners of war and the so-called “Eastern workers”. It was also of great importance to record the atrocities committed by the Nazis against Soviet citizens. The article shows the process of forming a system of interaction between the Soviet military and the German local self-governing authorities, as well as the allies in the anti-Hitler coalition; the establishment of the system was necessary for the implementation of the above mentioned objectives. The specifics of the activities of the Soviet military missions in the western zones of occupation in Germany is pointed out, with the emphasis laid on the zone of British occupation, where the infamous Nazi camps for the Soviet prisoners of war were located, and the death toll was extremely high. Special attention is paid to the change in the position of the Soviet military missions in West Germany in connection with the escalation of the Cold War. The present paper displays the position that the Soviet prisoners of war who have died in captivity and the “Eastern workers” have taken in the modern culture of memory of Russia. The conclusion is made about the need for their commemoration as a kind of return to their homeland after many years of silence and oblivion.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the means by which the state in Britain has attempted to influence the technological development of private industry in the period 1945-1979. Particular emphasis is laid on assessing the abilities of technology policy measures to promote innovation. With that objective, the innovation literature is selectively reviewed to draw up an analytical framework to evaluate the innovation content of policy (Chapter 2). Technology policy is taken to consist of the specific measures utilised by government and its agents that affect the technological behaviour of firms. The broad sweep of policy during the period under consideration is described in Chapter 3 which concentrates on elucidating its institutional structure and the activities of the bodies involved. The empirical core of the thesis consists of three parallel case studies of policy toward the computer, machine tool and textile machinery industries (Chapters 4-6). The studies provide detailed historical accounts of the development and composition of policy, relating it to its specific institutional and industrial contexts. Each reveals a different pattern and level of state intervention. The thesis concludes with a comparative review of the findings of the case studies within a discussion centred on the arguments presented in Chapter 2. Topics arising include the state's differential support for the range of activities involved in innovation, the location of state-funded R&D, the encouragement of supplier-user contact, and the difficulties raised in adoption and diffusion.

Abstract:
The formation of the Liberal Party of Australia in the mid-1940s heralded a new effort to stem the tide of government regulation that had grown with Labor Party rule in the latter years of World War II and immediately after. It was not until 1949 that the party gained office at Federal level, beginning what was to be a record unbroken term of 23 years, but its efforts faltered at State level in Victoria, where the party was divided, and in New South Wales, where Labor was seemingly entrenched. The fortunes were reversed with the rise to leadership of men who bore a different stamp to their predecessors, and were in many ways atypical Liberals: Henry Bolte in Victoria and Robin Askin in New South Wales. Bolte, a farmer, and Askin, a bank officer, had served as non-commissioned officers in World War II and rose to lead parties whose members who had served in the war were predominantly of the officer class. In each case, their man management skills put an end to division and destabilisation in their parties, and they went on to serve record terms as Liberal leaders in their respective States, Bolte 1955-72 and Askin 1965-75. Neither was ever challenged in their leadership and each chose the time and nature of his departure from politics, a rarity among Australian political leaders. Their careers are traced here in the context of the Liberal revival and the heightened expectations of the post-war years when the Liberal Party reached an ascendancy, governing for a brief time in 1969-70 in all Australian States as well as the Commonwealth. Their leadership is also examined in the broader context of leadership in the Liberal Party, and also in the ways in which the new party sought to engage with and appeal to a wider range of voters than had traditionally been attracted to the non-Labor parties.

Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale se produit un phénomène éditorial sans précédent : alors que le contexte y est peu favorable, d’innombrables revues francophones sont créées, aussi bien en France métropolitaine que dans les colonies et à l’étranger, à l’instar de Fontaine, Poésie, Confluences, L’Arbalète, Cahiers de Poésie, Les Lettres françaises et bien d’autres encore. Elles viennent s’adjoindre aux périodiques qui existaient avant 1939 et qui ont réussi à se maintenir, afin de souligner la grandeur intellectuelle du pays. Ensemble, ils reprennent à leur compte la mission de La Nouvelle Revue Française, qui se trouve peu à peu dénaturée du fait de ses positions politiques avant d’être interdite : s’ils publient les textes d’écrivains reconnus, ils s’attachent aussi à lancer de jeunes auteurs qui, sans eux, n’auraient pu atteindre la notoriété qui a été la leur. Ainsi, jusqu’en 1953, date à laquelle La N.R.F. obtient l’autorisation de reparaître, ils contribuent à dessiner le paysage littéraire de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle.Les revues publiées entre 1939 et 1953 apparaissent comme la condition même de l’émergence de la poésie durant cette période. Elles contribuent à replacer ce genre au centre de toutes les attentions et favorisent son renouvellement. Elles font ainsi découvrir à leurs lecteurs les poèmes d’écrivains comme Olivier Larronde, Adrian Miatlev ou encore un certain Noël Mathieu, qui deviendra bientôt le fameux Pierre Emmanuel. Elles diffusent leurs textes aux côtés de ceux d’auteurs reconnus comme Paul Éluard ou Aragon, dont l’œuvre est alors en pleine mutation, et remettent sur le devant de la scène des écrivains du passé.Aux côtés des poèmes eux-mêmes se déploie dans les revues un important discours critique, dans lequel les chroniqueurs s’interrogent en profondeur sur les évolutions de la poésie. S’ils dessinent ses lignes de force, évoquant tour à tour un néo-classicisme, un renouvellement du lyrisme et une poésie tantôt engagée, tantôt matérialiste, tantôt spiritualiste, ils s’interrogent aussi sur leur mission et engagent de ce fait la critique dans une dimension autoréflexive. Leurs articles et chroniques, dont la fonction première est de contribuer au rayonnement de la poésie, apparaissent ainsi comme le berceau dans lequel s’éveille, peu à peu, la Nouvelle Critique, qui connaîtra son plein essor après 1953 et rayonnera durant toute la seconde moitié du XXe siècle
The editorial scene during World War II was a witness to an unprecedented phenomenon. Beating the odds, a great number of French-speaking magazines were created, whether it be in Metropolitan France, in colonies or abroad. Among them : Fontaine, Poésie, Confluences, L’Arbalète, Cahiers de Poésie, Les Lettres françaises, and many more. These just add to the list of periodicals that predate 1939 and managed to stay afloat in order to underline the country’s intellectual greatness. Together - and in their own way - they upheld the mission of La Nouvelle Revue Française, whose nature was slowly altered because of its political views, before being shut down altogether. Not only did they publish renowned authors’ works, but they helped launch the careers of young authors who would not have been known otherwise. Hence, they contributed to the French literary landscape until 1953 - when La N.R.F. magazine was authorized to be published again.Without these magazines published between 1939 and 1953, poetry would have been completely forgotten during that era. Not only did they help make this genre the centre of attention and allowed its renewal but, thanks to them, readers discovered writers such as Olivier Larronde, Adrian Miatlev and Noël Mathieu – the latter would soon become the famous Pierre Emmanuel. Their work is published along those already renowned by Paul Éluard and Aragon – whose work was undergoing changes at the time – and they published long forgotten writers.Alongside these poems, criticism could be found in the columns of these magazines, in which chroniclers raise fundamental questions about the evolution of poetry. Pointing out main tendencies, they wrote about a newly found lyricism of a politically committed, materialistic or spiritualist poetry, but also about their own mission, which led to self-criticism. Their articles and chronicles whose prime goal was to help the prestige of poetry, slowly gave birth to the New Criticism, which knew full bloom after 1953 and shone throughout the second half of the twentieth century

Abstract:
Onward Bound: -- the first 50 years of Outward Bound Australia traces the founding and development of this unique, Australian, non-profit, non-government organisation from its earnest beginnings to its formidable position today where it attracts some 5,000 participants a year to its courses. The project included interviewing hundreds of people and scouring archives and public records to piece together a picture of how and why Outward Bound Australia (OBA) developed -- recording its challenges and achievements along the way. A mediated oral history approach was used among past and present OBA founders, staff and participants, to gather stories about their history. This use of oral history (in a historical book) was a way of cementing the known recorded facts and adding colour to the formal historical outline, while also giving credence to the text through the use of 'real' people's stories.

Abstract: Le Corbusier’s graphic output was prolific, consisting of hundreds of paintings, thousands of drawings and watercolors, and scores of collages, lithographs, and murals throughout his career. By the late 1940s his double-nature as artist-architect emerged as a key component to his work, as he highlighted the correlations and correspondences that informed his creative endeavors. His post-war works, specifically his series of Taureaux paintings, reveal the development of such themes as well as the transformation of earlier works as he turned to a mythologically-inspired vocabulary of totemic figures and animals, developing a private cosmology of sun and moon, male and female, the machine and Mediterraneità. Abstract: While there is an abundance of commentary and criticism on Le Corbusier’s effect upon architecture and planning globally – in Europe, Northern Africa, the Americas and the Indian sub-continent – there is very little dealing with other contexts such as Australia. The paper will offer a first appraisal of Le Corbusier’s relationship with Australia, providing example of the significant international reach of his ideas to places he was never to set foot. It draws attention to Le Corbusier's contacts with architects who practiced in Australia and little known instances of his connections - his drawing of the City of Adelaide plan (1950) and his commission for art at Jorn Utzon's Sydney Opera House (1958). The paper also considers the ways that Le Corbusier’s work underwent translation into Australian architecture and urbanism in the mid to late 20th century through the influence his work exerted on others, identifying further possibilities for research on the topic. Abstract: The program of the summer house will mark the acceptance period of modern architecture in Portugal. The modern life is put into practice by a group of architects to an enlightened bourgeoisie clientele, in some summer resorts that will start to be developed in the Portuguese coastline. The Existenzminimum, will be a German expression used throughout the twentieth century, particularly after the First World War, where the concerns of social nature and housing, for a large number of people will be important issues to be discussed by architects. Petit cabanon was Le Corbusier’s summer house in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. This small pavilion experienced new possibilities of living in minimum area, similar to the theories of the existenzminimum studied by Modern architects in the post-first world war period. New ways to dwell in minimum space are then reinterpreted in the early experiences of holiday houses in Portugal where a simple way of living started to be tested. Resumen: El programa de la casa de verano se cumplirá el plazo de aceptación de la arquitectura moderna en Portugal. La vida moderna se pone en práctica por un grupo de arquitectos a una clientela de burguesía, en algunos centros turísticos de verano que comenzarán a desarrollar en la costa portuguesa. El Existenzminimum, será una expresión alemana utilizado a lo largo del siglo XX, sobre todo después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, donde las preocupaciones de carácter social y vivienda, para un gran número de personas serán temas importantes a tratar por los arquitectos. Petit Cabanon fue la casa de verano de Le Corbusier en Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Este pequeño pabellón experimentó nuevas posibilidades de vivir en área mínima, similar a las teorías de la Existenzminimum estudiados por arquitectos modernos en el periodo posterior a la primera guerra mundial. Nuevas formas de habitar el espacio mínimo son entonces reinterpretadas en las primeras experiencias de casas de vacaciones en Portugal, donde una forma moderna de habitar comenzó a ser testada. The daily life in the Moldavian SSR orphanages during the post–war years was determined by the living conditions, the sanitary and hygienic state of the institutions, the provision of food and clothing, and the activities in which the children were involved. In the present paper, on the basis of unpublished archival documents and published documents, we elucidate the living conditions and the attitude towards children in the orphanages of the Moldavian SSR in the post–war years. Following the worsening of the social situation in the immediate post–war period in the Moldavian SSR, the number of orphans and vagrants increased. The solution of the Soviet state for this serious social problem was to expand the network of orphanages. On September 1, 1947, 21,553 children were already taken care of in 124 orphanages, a number that exceeded the possibilities of accommodation and food. The institutionalization of children was one of the solutions accepted ideologically by the Soviet Power. However, the ideological ideals did not correspond to the serious social realities in orphanages, where children lived in unsanitary conditions, also demonstrated by the numerous diseases caused by unsanitary conditions and lack of hygiene in the institutions: typhus, itching, tuberculosis. Children also suffered from malnutrition and dystrophy. The overall mortality rate among children was high.

It is shown that in General, by the end of the fourth five–year plan, the state farm machinery and tractor fleet corresponded to its level on the eve of the war.

Abstract: The aim of presented paper is to grasp a sense in which Le Corbusier influenced his professional partners within ATBAT at 35 rue de Sèvres in Paris. On the example of Iannis Xenakis (Greek) and Jerzy Sołtan (Pole), which curriculum and experience will be superposed, authors wish to analyse a means in which the formation of Le Corbusier’s Collaborators induced a profoundly individualistic paths of both apprentices. Moreover it enabled both artists to develop autonomous views on creative activities, which still stayed in mutual compliance. That allows to speculate upon the forcefulness of approach towards passing skills that Le Corbusier applied in his Studio. With a parallel example of two pavilions for the World’s Fare Expo’58 in Brussels, it is presented how compatible, despite of being completely different in form, those two projects are. Resumen: El objetivo del articulo es comprender cómo Le Corbusier influenciado sus socios profesionales en ATBAT a los 35 rue de Sèvres en Paris. Abstract: Le Corbusier’s work and thought are a predominant influence over the Modern Movement, and their worldwide spreading acquired a significant dimension during the Second Post-War period. Such predominance of the architectural models conveyed by Le Corbusier may have originated in the rationale enunciated in his written work, which clearly explains a set of doctrinaire parameters, or in his active determinant role in international organisations such as the CIAM, but particularly in his ability to become a global architect, which led to a large international publication of his work. This paper intends to analyse the significance of the Corbusian legacy in architectural production in Angola and Mozambique during the 1950s and 1960s. These two former Portuguese colonies, far away from the centre of power dominated by the dictatorship of the so-called Estado Novo, were tantamount to a land of freedom and were, for a significant range of young architects working and building there, a laboratory for testing new languages of the Modern Movement, particularly on the basis of the Corbusian vocabulary. Two of those young architects Vasco Vieira da Costa (1911- 1982) and Fernão Simões de Carvalho (1929-), who worked in Angola from the beginning of the 50s, were trainees in Le Corbusier’s Paris ateliers. In addition to the work developed by those two architects, the specificity of the architectural production in Angola and Mozambique, particularly private order work, is clearly referenced to the Corbusian lexicon, whether in a more orthodox or a more hybrid way. World military expenditure is estimated to have been $1822 billion in 2018. It was 2.6 per cent higher in real terms than in 2017 and 5.4 per cent higher than in 2009. Global military spending has been gradually rising following a post-2009 low in 2014. It is now 76 per cent higher than the post-cold war low in 1998. This Fact Sheet presents regional and selected national military expenditure data for 2018 and trends over the decade 2009–18. The data is from the updated SIPRI Military Expenditure Database, which provides military expenditure data by country for the years 1949–2018.

Abstract:
This report is thought as a guide to early hydrographic log sheets of bottle data obtained by the former Institut für Meereskunde, Kiel (IFMK, now integrated into GEOMAR) in the post-war years 1946 to 1956, and which in summer 2018 when a building used by GEOMAR was to clear were not available in digitized format at GEOMAR. The data mostly were taken by the research cutter FK “Südfall” in the Baltic. It turned out that some of these data from 1950 to 1956 were available in digitized form at the on-line data bank of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Comparison with the original logged data sheets, however, showed that they needed to be improved w/r to time and position and to be completed by missing data. This report shortly describes the methods of sampling and measuring these old data, and the processing steps applied to improve the data set by using the data log sheets before archiving and submitting the now improved and complete data set to data centres for archiving.

In this article considered Journalistic and editorial activity of Volodymyr Lenika (14.06.1922–02.11.2005) – one of the leading figures of Ukrainian emigration in Germany. First outlined basic landmarks of his life and creation. Journalistic and editorial activity of Volodymyr Lenik was during to forty years out of Ukraine. In the conditions of emigration politically zaangazhovani Ukrainians counted on temporality of the stay abroad and prepared to transference of the created charts and instituciy on native lands. It was or by not main part of conception of liberation revolution of elaborate OUN under the direction of Stepan Banderi, and successfully incarnated in post-war years. Volodymyr Lenik, executing responsible commissions Organization, proved on a few directions of activity, which were organically combined with his journalistic and editorial work. As an editor he was promotorom of creation and realization of models of magazines «Avangard», «Krylati», «Znannia», «Freie Presse Korespondenz», newspapers «Shliakh peremogy». As a journalist Volodymyr Lenik left ponderable work, considerable part of which entered in two-volume edition «Ukrainians on strange land, or reporting, from long journeys». Subject of him newspaper-magazine publications directed on illumination of school, youth, student, cultural, scientific problems, organization and activity of emigrant structures, political fight of emigration, to dethronement of the antiukrainskikh Moscow diversions and provocations. Such variety of problematic of works of V. Lenika was directed in the river-bed of retaining of revolutionary temperament in the environment of diaspore, to bringing in of it to activity in public and political life. Problematic of him is systematized publicism and journalistic appearances, which was inferior realization of a few important tasks, namely to the fight for Ukrainian independence in new terms, cherishing and maintainance of national identity, counteraction hostile soviet propaganda. On an example headed Volodymyr Lenikom a magazine «Knowledge» some aspects are exposed him editorial trade.
