Abstract:
This literature review explores the main causes and effects of absenteeism in a post-secondary educational context, as well as strategies that can potentially be used by such educational institutions to tackle absenteeism. With this aim, the literature review defines absenteeism in post-secondary educational institutions, highlights its main causes, possible effects, as well as examples of practice and recommendations on how this phenomenon can be curbed. Given the complex and multifactorial nature of the phenomenon, absenteeism cannot be tackled by simple intuition-based methods and is not a one-tool fix. Not only that effectively addressing absenteeism requires a combination of strategies and involves various actions and stakeholders, but also, there is evidence that strategies where educators show more interest in individual students life and behaviour have a significant effect on students attendance.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to report on a census of high-level sustainability initiatives at all accredited post-secondary institutions in Canada by documenting the institutions that have undertaken sustainability assessments, have signed one or more sustainability declarations, have sustainability offices or officers or have sustainability policies. The aim was to better understand the broad-scale patterns of commitments by post-secondary institutions to these sustainability initiatives by exploring the interrelationships among them, and with geographic and institutional characteristics. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected on existing high-level sustainability initiatives at Canada’s 220 accredited post-secondary institutions. Patterns in the data were analyzed using exploratory statistical techniques. This paper proposes a sustainability initiative score to help understand the diversity and patterns of sustainability initiative uptake. Findings – Institutions located in larger communities, and in British Columbia and Québec, tended to have higher sustainability initiative scores. Institutions in Saskatchewan and the territories had the lowest sustainability initiative scores. It was found that sustainability office(r)s, assessments and policies co-occurred disproportionately, potentially suggesting positive reinforcement mechanisms. On the other hand, having signed a declaration was not strongly linked to other sustainability initiatives. Terminological preference had shifted from “environment” and “sustainable development” to “sustainability”. Research limitations/implications – The scope was limited to a discrete set of high-level sustainability initiatives appropriate for a nation-wide census, at a moment in time, and is therefore not exhaustive in subject or temporal extent. This broad-scale comparative analysis compels further study into the relationship between the sustainability policy environment and sustainability practices on the ground, as well as implications for how post-secondary institutions engage with sustainability. The patterns and interrelationships this paper discovered help to structure future critical and comparative in-depth analyses of sustainability policies and practices within post-secondary education. Originality/value – Almost no extensive, comparative empirical studies of sustainability policy and practice in post-secondary institutions exist. This void is addressed by documenting and analyzing high-level sustainability initiatives across all accredited post-secondary institutions in Canada.

Abstract:
This study utilized student, teacher, and parent expectations during high school to analyze their predictive effect on post-secondary education status two years after scheduled graduation. The sample included 5,353 students, parents and teachers who participated in the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS; 2002–2006). The researchers analyzed data using a frequency analysis and a multinomial logistic regression. Results indicated that student, parent, and teacher expectations were significant predictors, with teacher expectations having the strongest effect across various categories of enrollment. This article also discusses the study's implications for school counselors.

Abstract:
Little is known about Nunavut students’ experiences in high school and post-secondary education, in particular their self-defined determinants of success. This study aimed to understand factors that influence secondary school completion, post-secondary education, and education success for students from Nunavut. An online survey was conducted with 91 current post-secondary students in 2018–19. Results found that students articulated complex support needs that influence their success, with roles for parents, teachers, and the community. Students identified support needs gaps, primarily in the form of funding distribution and delivery. Recommendations include increased financial, counselling, and mental health support for Nunavut students. Keywords: Inuit education, Nunavut education, Indigenous post-secondary students

Abstract:
The Special Article in this issue of Medical Problems of Performing Artists has the potential to usher in a new era in improving the lives of musicians (and potentially other performing artists) around the world. The Health Promotion in Schools of Music conference that was held in Texas in the fall of 2004 brought together a rich mixture of music and performing arts medicine professionals. Stimulated by the new National Association of Schools of Music accreditation standard that requires undergraduate music students to receive instruction in injury prevention and occupational health promotion, participants in the conference worked diligently for 3 days to discuss what we know, what we don't know, and how to approach the vital yet immensely complex issue of health promotion and injury prevention for college-level music students. While the recommendations in the Special Article are intentionally broad and allow each school to develop its own program, they are based on a true state of the art analysis of the field.

Abstract:
This is a prospective incidence study of 250 secondary post-tonsillectomy haemorrhages from a population of 2706 tonsillectomies performed over a seven-year period, which aims to ascertain the incidence and character of post-tonsillectomy secondary haemorrhage. Out of 250 post-tonsillectomy secondary bleeds (9.2 per cent of total; 95 per cent CI = 8.2 per cent – 10.4 per cent), 39 patients had a severe bleed (1.4 per cent; 95 per cent CI = 1.2 per cent – 2.1 per cent). The incidence of secondary tonsillectomy haemorrhage increased with age, peaking at 30–34 years in both men and women (p < 0.001), with no statistically significant difference between the two sexes (p = 0.23). The incidence of serious haemorrhage increases in the older age categories (p = 0.005) but is not influenced by gender (p = 0.50). The majority of secondary tonsillectomy haemorrhages presented between the fourth and seventh day post-operation (69.8 per cent). These results now provide the basis for informed consent for a tonsillectomy in our department.

Abstract:
In an ongoing evaluation of post-secondary financial aid, we use random assignment to assess the causal effects of large privately-funded aid awards. Here, we compare the unbiased causal effect estimates from our RCT with two types of non-experimental econometric estimates. The first applies a selection-on-observables assumption in data from an earlier, nonrandomized cohort; the second uses a regression discontinuity design. Selection-on-observables methods generate estimates well below the experimental benchmark. Regression discontinuity estimates are similar to experimental estimates for students near the cutoff, but sensitive to controlling for the running variable, which is unusually coarse.
