Wintcher, Amanda. "Post-palaeolithic rock art of northeast Murcia, Spain : an analysis of landscape and motif distribution." Thesis, Durham University, 2011. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3315/.

Abstract:
Multiple studies demonstrate a connection between landscape and the distribution of rock art in Mediterranean Spain. Looking beyond styles as the primary analytical dimension, and instead focusing on similarities across style boundaries, can deepen our understanding of this connection. While previous studies of the relationship between post-Palaeolithic rock art and landscape have considered different classes of image, including humans, animals, and geometric shapes, they have maintained the primary split into the main styles defined in the Mediterranean region. This is problematic because each style has considerable variability, distinct distributions within the Iberian Peninsula, and different histories of development. Different styles frequently occur together, occasionally superimposed or showing multiple painting episodes. The styles were therefore at least partially contemporary, and did not correspond to distinct territories. Style may have been deliberately used to carry meaning, suggesting that the use of specific types of image was more closely related to landscape than the overall styles. A typology of motifs which transcends styles was created, and the frequency of the appearance of these motif types in specific landscape contexts and the combinations in which they appear together on panels was evaluated. The results suggest that there are indeed patterns beyond style, which may indicate different functions or meanings behind both image and place.

Abstract:
It is not uncommon that certain rock and other popular music is attributed with artistic ambitions or is befitted with epithets such as "artistic" or "art music-like". However, it is rarely elaborated in which way these artistic qualities are conveyed. The purpose of this paper is to investigate from an analytical standpoint what can incentivize these wordings and if they can be viewed as adequate. The material for the investigation is three pieces/songs from the rock genre which have been described with the above terms: Close to the Edge by the group Yes from 1972, Sense of Doubt by David Bowie from 1977 and Sleep by the group Godspeed You! Black Emperor from 2000. The method is auditive music analysis which means that the analysis is based upon actively listening to the music. There are two areas of focus: one is on the music itself; one is on the intentions that may lie in and with the piece/song. The analysis is based upon a definition of the terms art music and popular music that is made at the beginning of the paper. This, in turn, is based upon a rundown of term definitions made in, above all, lexicons and dictionaries, but also in musicology, and thus it can claim a certain generality. The result of the analysis shows that all music examples move outside the boundaries of the definition of popular music and, at the same time, show qualities that fall inside the boundaries of the definition of art music. Thus, the descriptions of the songs as "art music-like" and "artistic" can be viewed as adequate. However, the analysis and the preceding term discussion raise awareness about the problems that are contained in the distinction between art music and popular music, respectively. This is elaborated in the concluding discussion in which the terms are interrelated to a contexture involving the history of ideas. The distinction is shown to have its roots in the cultural debate of the 19th century, and during the 20th century it has been nurtured by a modernist view of culture and society. The post-modernistic trends of the last few decades, characterized by increased value relativism and loosened musical genre boundaries, have contributed to making the terms obsolete.

Abstract:
The western rock lobster (WRL), Panulirus cygnus is a decapod crustacean which is found in abundance in the coastal waters of Western Australia and which supports a major fishery of economic importance for the State, with an annual harvest ranging between 10-12 million kilograms. The growth of the existing markets in Asia for live exports and the competition exerted by other countries marketing spiny lobsters prompted the need for the Industry to assess and develop post-harvest handling procedures likely to contribute to an improved quality of live product. The physiological responses of P. cygnus to handling and transportation were virtually unexplored. The objectives of this project were, (i) to generate information with regard to the biological phenomena underlying morbidity and mortality of lobsters during live export shipments, (ii) to investigate the physiological responses of P. cygnus to the post-harvest handling practices currently used by the WRL industry in their five export program and, (iii) to identify protocols by which post-harvest handling techniques could be modified to reduce the occurrence of morbidity and mortality during five export. These objectives were achieved through, (i) a field survey conducted during the course of the 1992/93 fishing season, investigating the relative influence of environmental factors and processing techniques on the incidence of lobster morbidity+mortality during simulated live shipments and, (ii) a series of field experiments that monitored the physiological responses elicited by lobsters to post-harvest handling procedures and simulated live shipment conditions. From the field survey, it appeared that the rate of morbidity+mortality experienced in simulated live shipments, within the three processing units surveyed, averaged 5.22 +/- 0.63 %, with a highly significant difference (p [less than] 0.001) between the processing units. Scrutiny of the data revealed a major influence of two factors directly related to post-harvest handling procedures: a) the time spent under normal commercial conditions in packaging export cartons and, b) the ambient temperature within the export cartons. Following 30-36 hrs in packaging, the percent mortality increased twofold, from 5.2 +/- 0.0 % recorded following 20 - 24 hrs to 10.4 +/- 2.3%. With regard to the ambient temperature within the export carton, temperatures between 17.5 and 20.0 degrees celsius appear to be optimal for P. cygnus survival while temperatures above 20.0 degrees celsius induce significantly greater morbidity and mortality.A number of factors were identified as having a potential influence on lobster physiological responses to post-harvest handling conditions:a)Immediately after harvesting, lobsters are subjected to a range of transport environment options, according to their origins: i.e., (i) direct delivery from fishing vessels by local fishermen to the processing facility, (ii) onshore transportation by truck from coastal depots and, (iii) transport in baskets on board carrier-boats from the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.b) After delivery, lobsters are subjected to sorting and grading procedures, with a concomitant exposure to air and disturbance.c) Recovery in holding tanks is usually allowed for a period ranging between 24 to 72 hours.d) Prior to being packed in export cartons, lobsters are subjected to a short period (30 sec to 3 min) of immersion in chilled water (8 - 12 degrees celsius), the procedure varying from one processor to the other.e) During subsequent periods of transit in export cartons, (up to 48 hrs) lobsters are subjected to aerial exposure and fluctuating ambient temperature.A comparison of the physiological profiles of lobsters from different origins revealed significant differences, with respect to a range of physiological variables. On the basis of visual estimates of health status, lobsters from the "local" origin exhibited a consistently superior condition, when compared to "coastal" and "carrier-boat" animals. The examination of physiological variables revealed consistent trends reflecting the visual assessments. "Local" lobsters exhibited significantly lower levels in anaerobic metabolic waste concentrations, with the haemolymph lactate titre between 2.77 +/- 0.19 and 4.33 +/- 0.56 mmol L(subscript)-1, compared with the other groups, between 5.23 +/- 0.24 and 8.86 +/- 1.29 mmol L(subscript)-1. A 250 to 300% increase in haemolymph ammonia concentration was observed between "coastal" and "carrier-boat" groups and the "local" lobsters, at 0.32 +/- 0.02 mmol L(subscript)-1. Significantly higher pH values were recorded for the "local" group, at 7.72 +/- 0.04, compared with values below 7.64 +/- 0.04 for the other groups. "Local" lobsters recorded 8 to 15 times less circulating glucose, at 0.11 +/- 0.03 mmol L(subscript)-1, having 50% more ATP in their muscle tissues, at 6.07 +/- 0.15 mu mol g(subscript)-1 and 250% more arginine phosphate, at 6.56 +/- 0.72 mu mol g(subscript)-1.An assessment of the efficiency of the industry sorting procedures revealed differences between selected and rejected animals with regard to the ATP and arginine phosphate concentrations in their muscle tissues with, as a common trend for both variables, selected animals recorded higher values. Significant differences were identified within the "local" group of lobsters, with selected animals recording 40% more ATP, at 6.92 +/- 0.63 mu mol g(subscript)-1 and 30 % more arginine phosphate, at 7.77 +/- 1.01 mu mol g(subscript)-1.A monitoring of the physiological profiles of lobsters subjected to extended (up to 8 hours) periods of onshore transportation in trucks revealed a significant reduction in their health status. A consistent and almost linear fall in the concentration of total adenylate (35%), to 5.46 +/- 0.50 mu mol g(subscript)-1 and phosphagen reserve (70%),to 2.77 +/- 0.26 mu mol g(subscript)-1, were recorded throughout the 8 hour period. For up to 6 hours the concentration of lactate in the leg muscle tissues increased by 0.95 mu mol g(subscript)-1 h(subscript)-1 and then by 4.7 mu mol g(subscript)-1 h(subscript)-1,to reach 20.57 +/- 1.61 mu mol g(subscript)-1 after 8 hours. Haemolymph glucose and ammonia titres recorded a 3.5 fold increase over the first 6 hours, to reach 2.14 +/- 0.54 and 1.17 +/- 0.16 mmol L(subscript)-1, respectively, the last period (6 to 8 hours) being characterised by a 1.6 and 1.9 fold decrease in concentration. Lobsters were able to maintain their haemolymph pH close to 7.77 during the first four hours, with a concomitant rise in haemolymph calcium concentration. From the results, it appeared that, under current industry procedures, extending the period during which lobsters are transported in spray trucks to more than 6 hours is conducive of altered physiological status. An assessment of the effects of short periods (up to 60 min) of aerial exposure and disturbance revealed significant changes in the physiological profiles of lobsters. When exposed to air, lobsters exhibited a significant fall in haemolymph pH, a rise in lactate concentration, and a depletion in energy reserves. Lobsters left undisturbed were able to buffer an incipient acidosis for up to 40 min (7.78 +/- 0.03), after which a decline in pH was recorded to reach 7.71 +/- 0.02. Conversely, disturbed animals experienced an uncompensated acidosis and a decrease by 0.7 of a unit over a 60 minute period. Similarly, undisturbed lobsters did not demonstrate behavioural signs of stress while disturbed animals exhibited dramatically diminished responses to handling after 60 min of exposure. Both disturbed and undisturbed animals recorded a decline in ATP/ADP, to reach after 40 min, 8.31 +/- 0.77 and 5.05 +/- 0.45, respectively, compared to 13.18 +/- 1.69 (control). During the last period (40 to 60 min), the undisturbed animals recorded a 40 % decrease in ATP concentration, to reach 4.42 +/- 0.16 mu mol g(subscript)-1, while a 53% decline was recorded in the disturbed group, to 3.59 +/- 0.41 mu mol g(subscript)-1. During aerial exposure, the phosphagen reserve recorded a 55% decrease in the disturbed animals, at 4.82 +/- 1.37 mu mol g(subscript)-1, compared to 20% in the undisturbed group, at 8.64 +/- 0.87 mu mol g(subscript)-1. A 100% increase in lactate ion concentration was recorded in the muscle tissues of disturbed animals to reach 5.53 +/- 0.49 mu mol g(subscript)-1, compared to a 15% increase in the undisturbed group, at 2.83 +/- 0.29 mu mol g(subscript)-1.The monitoring of the physiological profiles of lobsters during extended periods (up to 72 hrs) of recovery in holding tanks revealed significant shifts in their physiological profiles and that a return to a steady state occurred only after 8 to 48 hours following re-immersion, according to the environmental conditions and the origin of the animals. Resting levels were identified after 24 hours for the haemolymph pH (close to 8.00), for the concentration in lactate, ions in the muscle tissues (2.00 to 3.00 mu mol g(subscript)-1 for the haemolymph glucose titre (0.30 to 0.60 mmol L(subscript)-1), for the haemolymph ammonia titre (close to 0.25 mmol L(subscript)-1), for ATP (6.50 to 7.70 mu mol g(subscript)-1), and for the phosphagen reserve (12.2 to 16.70 mu mol g(subscript)-1). Longer periods ([greater than]/= 48 hrs) were required for full recovery to occur when lobsters were stored at high stocking density and when lobsters were not isolated from their artificial environment. Extending the recovery period to 72 hrs resulted in slight changes in the physiological profiles of lobsters, with a 20 % decline in ATP/ADP, a 10% decrease in phosphagen concentration in the muscle tissues of the lobsters and subdued behavioural responses for those lobsters held at higher stocking densities. No attempt was made in the present study to establish the resting levels for the physiological variables surveyed. In a number of experiments, "control" groups have been studied and used as reference points to monitor changes accompanying exposure to a range of environmental conditions. The data pertaining to these different groups revealed a variability for most of the variables surveyed, suggesting that it would be hazardous to assume that these animals were undisturbed and to state with confidence that the values recorded for the variables surveyed would represent resting levels. The physiological responses of lobsters subjected to chilling procedures was investigated and significant physiological changes were identified. Short chilling procedures (3 and 6 min) were conducive of a dramatic reduction of the behavioural responses to handling, a reduction in pH values ranging between 0.13 and 0.24 of a unit, a rise in haemolymph lactate concentration by 1 to 2.6 mmol L(subscript)-1, a 20 to 100% increase in haemolymph glucose titre, a 35 to 75% decrease in phosphagen concentration. Extending the chilling period for up to 24 hrs resulted in a progressive return to control levels for most of the physiological variables surveyed. However, physiological signs of disturbance remained perceptible between 2 to 15 hours, as demonstrated by elevated lactate concentrations, lowered ATP and AP concentrations and lowered ATP/ADP values.Lobster body core temperature (CBT) reduction resulting from immersion in chilled water suggested that limited cooling effects were achieved by using the standard chilling procedures currently used by the WRL industry. Using "A" size lobsters (395 - 453 gr), a reduction of the CBT by 0.5 to 0.8 degrees celsius was recorded after 1 and 3 min immersion in 12 degrees celsius water, highlighting the limited low temperature effect exerted by these procedures in lowering the overall temperature of the mass of the product to be packed into export cartons.A study of the general physiological responses of lobsters to simulated live transport conditions in export cartons was conducted, investigating the effects of the period spent by the animals in export cartons, the effects of environmental temperature and the impact of chilling regimes. No attempt was made to duplicate exactly the conditions of cartons shipped overseas, that is carted by trucks to the airport and then transported by air to foreign markets. This study revealed that during the first 4 hours of transit, the animals exhibited physiological changes probably related to delayed responses to handling, disturbance and chilling procedures, as demonstrated by a decline in pH (0.1 to 0.3 of a unit), a rise in haemolymph ammonia (0.5 to 1 mmol L(subscript)-1) and glucose (0.5 mmol L(subscript)-1) titres, an increase in muscle lactate concentration (0.5 to 1 mu mol g(subscript)-1, a decrease in ATP concentration (1.5 mu mol g(subscript)-1, and a partial replenishment of the phosphagen reserve. These changes were less pronounced for those lobsters which underwent intermediate (30 min) chilling treatments. The subsequent periods (to 48 hours) were characterised, for all the treatments, by a rise in lactate concentration in the muscle tissues, this response being delayed for those lobsters which underwent a "6 min" or "30 min" chilling treatment. The data suggested that moderate changes in haemolymph lactate titre resulted from the increase in muscle lactate concentration, up to values ranging between 6 and 8 mu mol g(subscript)-1, beyond which levels, haemolymph lactate rose dramatically, to reach values up to 19.98 mmol L(subscript)-1. The ATP concentration remained relatively constant up to 18 - 26 hours, after which a steep decline was recorded to reach values below or close to 4 mu mol g(subscript)-1 after 42 hours, suggesting that the adenylate pool was maintained, probably through aerobic and anaerobic pathways of energy generation and by the "buffering" role played by the phosphagen reserve. After 24 to 36 hours, all the lobsters exhibited signs of energy depletion, as demonstrated by the changes in ATP/ADP ratio. A concomitant increase in lactate ion concentration and a decrease in haemolymph glucose titre was recorded, suggesting that anaerobic metabolism had become the major component of energy production. Simultaneously, a marked increase in the internal carton temperature was identified, which probably induced an increase in the metabolic rate of the lobsters. This "temperature effect" was delayed for up to 32-38 hrs transit, for those lobsters which underwent intermediate (30 min) and extended (24 hrs) chilling treatments. The changes in haemolymph pH and calcium titre suggest that the initial decline in pH identified at the completion of the first 4 hours of transit was, at least partially, compensated after 26 - 32 hours. A 30 to 40% increase in haemolymph calcium titre was recorded after 4 hours of transit, suggesting that bicarbonate ions were released in order to buffer the pH of the haemolymph. However, a decrease in pH (0.1 to 0.3 of a unit) was recorded during the subsequent periods suggesting that the bicarbonate buffering capacity did not suffice to match the recorded massive rise in lactate titre.By extending the duration of the chilling procedures and by using refrigerated material (wood-shaving fillers, ice-bottles), lower temperatures were achieved inside the packaging cartons and these were maintained for longer periods of transit (up to 20 hours), delaying the effect of the external environment on the temperature changes recorded inside the cartons and the concomitant metabolic responses of the animals. This effect was also achieved by maintaining the cartons in controlled temperature environments ([less than] 20 degrees celsius) and, to a lesser extent, by improving the insulation capacity of the polystyrene cartons. This study constitutes an overview of the physiological responses of Panulirus cygnus to post-harvest handling procedures currently used by the WRL industry. It revealed that an improved return for the Industry could be achieved by reducing the debilitating effects exerted on the lobsters by handling, exposure to air and elevated environmental temperature. It provides direction for future research, aimed at improving the quality and hence, the financial return in the live export of WRL.

Abbasi, Behrooz. "AN IMPROVED ROCK MASS BEHAVIOR NUMERICAL MODEL AND ITS APPLICATIONS TO LONGWALL COAL MINING." OpenSIUC, 2016. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1190.

Full text
Abstract:
TITLE: AN IMPROVED ROCK MASS BEHAVIOR NUMERICAL MODEL AND ITS APPLICATIONS TO LONGWALL COAL MINING The rock mass constitutive models should include elastic moduli, strength and stiffness of intact rock as well as those of joints and geometric properties of joints. The post-failure behavior of intact rock and joints must also be specified. A direct application of the above comments is in longwall coal mining where the coal as well as the immediate roof and floor strata may undergo controlled brittle failure and associated weakening in tension and shear based on post- failure characteristics of the rock mass. In addition to controlled failure and weakening of the rock mass ahead and over the longwall face, large scale caving and compaction of caved materials occur behind the longwall face. Itasca’s Cave-Hoek three dimensional constitutive model has the ability to model longwall mining process that involve the above mentioned mechanism of rock mass failure and compaction. However, its testing to date is limited. The overall goals of research are two-fold: 1) Develop numerical modeling approaches that consider the caving behavior of jointed rock masses in design and analysis, and 2) Apply these techniques in designing stable chain-pillars and set-up rooms for longwall coal mining. Specific objectives are to: 1) Develop an improved constitutive model for prediction of post-peak behavior of rock masses typical of longwall mining in Illinois, 2) Implement the improved model for predicting gob material behavior using FLAC3D numerical code (most commercial codes do not have a built in model for gob material) and its effects on load transfer into gate entries, 3) Identify mechanisms of instability in setup rooms, 4) Develop alternate 3- and 4-entry set-up room geometries using 3-D numerical analyses, 5) Implement and field demonstrate developed geometries, and 6) Monitor performance of implemented geometries through field monitoring. An alternative method to estimate the residual strength of a rock mass is developed. A yielded rock mass and a rock fill have several common characteristics including dilation behavior under low confinement and extensive crushing of contact points under high stress, which decrease dilation. The residual strength takes on an initial value in the immediate post-peak (corresponding to near-zero porosity) condition, then degrades to an ultimate residual strength that is lower as a result of bulking, a corresponding increase in porosity, and a drop in interlock under continued shear. The following comments summarize the key findings of this research: • The model for predicting rock fill material shear strength was used as a residual strength criterion. A relationship for estimating Hoek-Brown residual parameters as a function of equivalent roughness of rock fill particles and basic friction angle was used. • Macro-level measurements around setup rooms and gate entry development areas indicated that most of the observed ground control problems may be related to subsidence movements over the setup rooms area. • Mechanisms that may be responsible for poor ground conditions in setup rooms and adjoining gate entries were identified. Collected field data and numerical analyses results tend to support the identified mechanisms. • The integrated field monitoring and numerical modeling study here assisted the cooperating coal company to plan for additional supports in development entries impacted by the fault zone and in taking appropriate safety measures while the longwall face advanced toward the fault and crossed it.

Similarly, undisturbed lobsters did not demonstrate behavioural signs of stress while disturbed animals exhibited dramatically diminished responses ++
to handling after 60 min of exposure. Longer periods ([greater than]/= 48 hrs) were required for full recovery to occur when lobsters were stored at high stocking density and when lobsters were not isolated from their ++
artificial environment. However, physiological signs of disturbance remained perceptible between 2 to 15 hours, as demonstrated by elevated lactate concentrations, lowered ATP and AP concentrations and lowered ATP/ADP values.Lobster body core temperature (CBT) reduction resulting from immersion in chilled water suggested that limited cooling ++
effects were achieved by using the standard chilling procedures currently used by the WRL industry. The data suggested that moderate changes in haemolymph lactate titre resulted from the increase ++
in muscle lactate concentration, up to values ranging between 6 and 8 mu mol g(subscript)-1, beyond which levels, haemolymph lactate rose dramatically, to reach values up to 19.98 mmol L(subscript)-1. However, a decrease in pH (0.1 to 0.3 of a unit) was recorded during the subsequent periods suggesting that the bicarbonate buffering capacity did not suffice to match the recorded massive rise in lactate titre.By extending the duration of the chilling procedures and by using refrigerated ++
material (wood-shaving fillers, ice-bottles), lower temperatures were achieved inside the packaging cartons and these were maintained for longer periods of transit (up to 20 hours), delaying the effect of the external environment on the temperature changes recorded inside the cartons and the concomitant metabolic responses of the animals.

Guerra, Joan Lorraine. "A Comparison of Infaunal Community Structure Between Pre- and Post Construction Sampling of Artificial FDOT Rock- Pile Reefs in Broward County, Florida." NSUWorks, 2015. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/occ_stuetd/399.

Abstract:
Artificial reefs (ARs) are generally created with the intention of increasing local fish populations, biodiversity and corresponding habitat productivity, most often in support of commercial and recreational uses (e.g., diving and fishing). Numerous studies have investigated the communities that develop on artificial reefs. By contrast, far less research has focused on the surrounding infaunal communities, which represent critical trophic resources for many species that populate both natural and artificial reefs, and which may be affected both by AR deployment and the organisms that subsequently recruit to them. This study compared infaunal organism abundances at four sites between the inner and middle reefs off Broward County, Florida, before deployment of a series of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) AR boulders in 2009 (pre-construction) and four years later in 2013 (post-construction). Samples consisted of sediment collected in hand-held core tubes taken on open sediment adjacent to the proposed ARs and along transects at distances 3 m and 7 m from the ARs post-construction. Sample depths ranged from 12.1 to 14.6 m. Analyses were carried out on organisms retained on a >0.5 mm sieve and identified to the lowest practical taxonomic level. Data consisted of abundances rather than densities, because pre-construction samples did not record sediment volume per core. A total of 163 taxa were identified, of which only 50 were identified to genus and 64 to species. Polychaete families Spionidae, Sabellidae, Syllidae, and Hesionidae, and sipunculan superfamily Phascolosomatidea dominated pre-construction samples. Polychaetes also dominated post-construction samples, with high relative abundances of Sabellidae and Hesionidae, but with increased proportions of bivalves and amphipods. Statistical analyses (PRIMER, PERMANOVA, and SIMPER) determined whether infaunal composition, richness and, diversity differed among samples by year, site and distance from AR boulders. A slight but statistically insignificant difference in species diversity appeared between 3- and 7-m distances between years. However, composition, richness, and diversity of infauna did not differ either between pre-and post-construction samples or by sample distance from the adjacent AR boulders. The increase in homogeneity among samples post-construction may reflect recovery following the disturbance created by AR deployment, or a response to different benthic conditions generated by AR deployment. As other studies have suggested that AR fauna may influence surrounding infaunal communities to distances greater than 7 m, and that conditions may not stabilize around ARs for up to ten years following deployment, additional sampling is recommended to determine the longer-term effects of the FDOT ARs on infauna and benthic habitat (e.g., sediment composition, water movement) and assist in determining best practices for future AR deployments (e.g., composition, structure, location).

Abstract:
Cemented carbides are used in rock tool applications by reason of their beneficial mechanical properties, i.e. a combination of high toughness, wear resistance and hardness. The cemented carbides commonly receive their hardness from tungsten carbides (WC) whereas cobalt (Co) is the dominating binder material. To obtain a beneficial balance of these desired properties, the binder phase can be strengthened by post-sintering treatment to minimize the risk of catastrophic failure. Previous work has shown that the face centered cubic (FCC) cobalt phase is stabilized by a higher degree of dissolved tungsten in the binder. The residual stresses have been related to both further stabilization of the FCC and local transformation to a hexagonal close packed (HCP) phase. By exposing the inserts to mechanical deformation, i.e. inducing stress, the Co-binder material could theoretically transform from FCC to HCP. In this master thesis, five cemented carbides with three different binder phase compositions have been investigated. Additionally, the influence of the carbon content and addition of an alloying element was evaluated. This was done by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis of the microstructure of each sample in as-sintered state and after post-treatment to gain better understanding on how the phase stability of the binder is affected by a post-sintering process. In addition, magnetic measurements, hardness-testing and mechanical tests were performed on the materials to evaluate the effect of using different binder compositions. It was found that a low carbon content provides smaller and more rounded WC grains and binder phase dominated by FCC-Co compared to an equivalent material with a high carbon content. A low carbon content furthermore resulted in a more wear resistant material. The addition of alloy MA presented a greater increase in surface hardness after post-treatment and made the materials even more wear resistant compared to the non-alloyed. The non-alloyed material performed better in a test measuring the fracture energy. A material with an Fe-based binder showed the least increase in surface hardness and the highest increase and overall fracture energy. All materials experienced a WC grain size refinement and an increase in their surface hardness after post-treatment. Only one material gave an indication on FCC to HCP phase transformation, no conclusions could be drawn from the other samples.

Rust, Catharine. "Meta-tourism, sense of place and the rock art of the Little Karoo." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1187.

Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil) (Geography and Environmental Studies))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
The subject is the rock art within the region known as the Little Karoo in the Western Cape that lies between the coastal plain and the Greater Karoo, penned in geographically by the Langeberg in the south and the Swartberg in the north. During a ten year site survey of 150 sites with rock art, content and details of the rock art images have been recorded on site forms and where possible traced on polyester film and photographed. The sites tend to be small with, on average, fewer than 50 images, but then 7 sites have more than 100 images per site. The sites are located mostly in ravines in the mountainous areas. Few sites with rock art have occupation deposits. Human figures in the rock art, predominantly male, are most commonly represented. Other images are animals, such as eland, smaller antelope, elephants, felines, canids and therianthropic figures of half-human, half-animal forms. Finger dots, handprints and geometric or non-representational marks are present in the rock art sample as well. The art can be linked to shamanistic experiences in altered states of consciousness. A number of depictions are interpreted as part of rainmaking ritual and the significance of the symbolism of water. There are resemblances in content and style to the rock art in the Hex River Valley, the Cederberg, and south of the Langeberg, on the coastal plain, but some imagery point to a variation more specific to the Little Karoo. These are rare rock art depictions of a combination of human head and upper torso with ichthyoidal lower limbs, at times reminiscent of bird-like human figures. Verbatim accounts recorded of stories and sightings of numinous watermeide (water maidens) at waterholes and rivers of the Little Karoo and correlations drawn with research on similar folklore in the Northern Cape and elsewhere make a traditional link between these regions. The myth of the watermeide takes on a therianthropic nature in form, that of half-human half-fish, reminiscent of the well-known westernized mystical concept of mermaid features; a description popular in the vernacular. The described form of the watermeid espouses a connection to the uniqueness of the rock paintings of therianthropic figures with distinctive fishtail and human shoulders, head and arms. A connection with explanatory accounts of rock paintings and folklore recorded in the Oudtshoorn district more than a hundred years ago, recorded information of stories and myths of mystical water creatures in the Northern Cape, and verbatim accounts of the watermiede, is made to suggest a basis for interpretation of the therianthropic nature of some of the rock art imagery in the Little Karoo. The rock art is produced in a space and a time frame that may be related to that of the current stories of the watermeide.

Abstract:
The aim of this study has been to revaluate Bronze Age society using rock art as an archaeological material. It has also sought to question certain prevailing interpretative trends within the research of rock art; ascribing it as ritual practices, expression of a social elite and the adoption of symbols from cultures along the Mediterranean Sea. This has chiefly been made possible through the application of Slavoj Žižeks ideas about the ideological fantasy and the sublime object of ideology. The thesis proposes a connection between art and ideology. A selected sampling of rock carvings from three areas in Sweden has been made in order to further investigate the relationship between different figurative motives both at a regional level, as well as a local. This study claims that rather than having been under the control of an elite, rock art has been accessible for the majority of the population both to produce and view. The depiction of human representation as rock carving does not depict a clear social stratification. It is also argued that the idea of images displayed on the rocks having roots in the imagery of Mediterranean civilizations is a construct of current western ideology, as the symbolic connection between the cultures is tenable at best, according to this study.

Abstract:
In Spain, the era of political transition to democracy known as La Transición during the 1970s and 1980s led to changes in Spanish popular music (i.e., pop, rock, punk) which became the musical representation of the new democracy’s social and political changes. Two different musical movements of that period, La Movida Madrileña and Rock Radical Vasco, established boundaries between official mainstream music and its musical counterculture counterpart, underground, and subversive musical practices within Spanish democracy. This thesis examines the nature of those musical practices, their song lyrics, and their social and political interpretations, including their influence on current musical practices.

Hobson, Mary A. "Exploring the Financial Management Skills of Independent Rock Bands." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1969.

Full text
Abstract:
In the post-Napster era of disruptive innovations, independent artists are managing more nonmusical roles and more revenue streams to remain competitive and earn a living wage from their music. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the financial management strategies that one independent rock band needed to understand music royalties. Disruptive innovation was the conceptual framework used to guide the study. The sample was comprised of 4 members of an independent rock band based in Northeast Ohio. The selected band met the criteria for the study as members who earned revenue from copyrighted works, merchandise, and CD sales. The multiple data sources included face-to-face interviews with band members; public document review of ReverbNation standard policy, Fox licensing agreement, and the IRS W-9 Form; and direct observations of band members during a rehearsal and live performance. Member checking was used to strengthen the credibility and trustworthiness of interpretations. Four themes emerged from the data analysis: organizational governance of band member responsibilities, financial management education and skills, developing multiple revenue streams from royalties, and financial strategies to manage all revenue streams. Social change from this study might include college-level financial training certificate programs designed for artists given their time constraints, mobility, and need to attract financing sources other than major labels.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is about female rock musicians who are involved in two Swedish non-profit feminist music associations; Rockrebeller, which is situated in Uppsala and She´s Got the Beat in Umeå. The aim of the study is to analyze how the informants describe their lives as rock musicians and as active participants in these feminist music associations. The main issues are musicianship, identity, feminism and gender. The empirical material consists of in-depth interviews with ten informants – five from Umeå and five from Uppsala – and these interviews are complemented by a number of participatory observations. The focus of thesis is on the informants’ self-presentations: their stories and experiences. One central theme is the ways that the informants’ different identities are interlaced and closely knit together in different ways: as feminists, as musicians and as active participants in the associations. Two major themes in my thesis are music and politics and they can be regarded as two sides of the same coin; in order to make it easier for women to play rock music they have become involved in the associations, and this relationship is regarded as a form of political work. The informants have been influenced by punk and Riot Grrrls Movement – a feminist movement that is associated with punk bands and fanzines is sometimes seen as representative of a "third wave feminism". All the informants are members of rock bands, but many are also engaged in other projects, for instance in the role of a singer-songwriter, and these different identities as musicians are often seen as complementary to each other. Rock bands are generally considered to be fascinating but insecure experiences because bands tend to split up with time. Those who are also active musicians outside of the band (most often guitarists) usually regard their own individual identity as musicians as the most important thing; a safe harbor that is always there. Their ideological beliefs are for instance visible in a common vision of the ideal rock band as democratic, anti-hierarchic and where an equality of opportunity exists. Rock music is in some ways used as an expression for an alternative way of life, of rebellion, and is seen as politically subversive. One of the ambivalences of the source material is the kind of identity politics that the associations represent and whose purpose is to improve the gender equality in the field. There is a well-known dilemma involved in this practice; how is it possible to navigate from a marginalized, subordinated position, without using the method of categorizing that may increase the probability of reproducing their own marginalization? Their life as rock musicians is described as enjoyable rewarding, and as a means of expressing their cultural belonging and ideological beliefs, such as feminism. However, the overall picture highlights the pleasures of creating and making music, which serves as an explanation why they strive to make rock music more accessible for women. The descriptions of being in a band and performing on stage are varied and on the whole complex. The group dynamics of the band are portrayed as very meaningful but also trying at times, and playing in front of an audience is described as everything between ecstasy and a nerve-wrecking experience. However, there is an overall adaptation to the norms surrounding rock music; a sense that one has to adjust oneself in order to function as a rock musician. The informants´ statements generally emphasize gender, but from time to time they identify themselves with other male amateur rock musicians.

Abstract:
Rock music emerged in the USSR as "a questionable art form" the practice of wich was handled in a differentiated and somewhat inconsistent manner by soviet institutions. The means chosen by its protagonists to legitimise rock music during the 1970's and 1980's took account of both the genre's international dynamic and the national constraints placed upon it (typical of the "regime" and of soviet culture). The Leningrad rock milieu's oscillation between these two contexts created particular methods of adaptation and a form of autonomy unique to the protagonists involved. Finding itself at the epicentre of the political struggles generated by Perestroika and consumed en masse, rock music nevertheless became a somewhat minor activity in post soviet Russia. New creative figures, inspired by emerging trends and breaking with old models of legitimacy and otherness, distributed themselves across St Petersburg via night clubs, establishments new Russia and wich were modelled on their western counterparts but wich had their own style. Establishing themselves as an "underground" scene and thus giving musicians recognition within a closed circle (being part of the same microcosm) the club in becoming commercial at the end of the 1990's redefined their priorities and moved away from their origins. They started imposing new limits on musicians. This process created a profound restructuring of the local scene and its milieux revealed here both through archives and other publication as well as coutinuous fieldwork benefiting from an openness in comparative studies

Abstract:
Based on a study of two protest rock movements in Belarus, this thesis examines the phenomenon of politicisation in an authoritarian regime. The “national” rock emerged in the 1980s as a modern artistic movement inspired by Western music conventions. Singing in Belarusian, this scene aspired to promote a heterodox vision of “national identity”. The authoritarian turn in 1995-1996 provoked protest re-politicisation of this artistic movement. “National” rock musicians continued to claim the “underground” status, while aspiring to professionalisation and commercial production. Against the backdrop of the authoritarian change, another protest movement emerged in the mid-1990s. Following the internationalised Do-It-Yourself model, the DIY anarcho-punk is closely linked to anarchist groups and promotes amateurism, limited artistic production and radical political expression. Based on the example of the two artistic movements, this thesis studies the logics of politicisation and the modes of political protest

Abstract:
The South African government faces numerous challenges in redistributing resources and ensuring access to those resources by historically disadvantaged individuals. This is particularly relevant in the fishing industry where people have been dependant on marine living resources, but under Apartheid, were restricted from accessing these resources. The manner and extent to which the South African government seeks to address the injustices of the past in fisheries allocations is an important indication of its commitment to transformation. Transformation of the fishing industry must be balanced against the South African government's commitment to promote historically disadvantaged individuals on the one hand, and sustainable development, the internal transformation of previously advantaged companies and the government's commitment under international human rights and environmental law instruments on the other. The South African government's Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has published numerous White Papers and laws that recognise the government's role as custodian of natural resources and the need for the redistribution of resources especially to historically disadvantaged individuals. However, the manner in which legislation and policy is implemented and, more importantly, the way transformation is interpreted by the courts is an important indication of what levels of transformation would satisfy the courts that transformation was considered and given effect to. As stated above, this is important not only for the fishing industry sector but for the redistribution and transformation processes in other areas as well. Transformation requires a marked change. The process under the Marine Living Resources Act and the levels of transformation that it has achieved resembles a negotiated settlement, where the process in allocating fishing rights is relatively transparent, rather than change that is so significant that it may be considered as marked.

Abstract:
The plate-boundary Alpine Fault runs immediately offshore of the popular tourist destination of Milford Sound, which is visited by more than half a million tourists each year. Glaciers retreated from the fiord between ~24-16 ka, leaving behind a legacy of extreme topography, including some of the world's highest sea cliffs, which tower nearly 2 km above the fiord. Visitors come to view the spectacularly steep and rugged landscape, with many cruising the fiord by boat. This project utilizes surface exposure dating (TCND) of glacially modified surfaces, to gain further insight into the glacier retreat history of Milford Sound. Exposure dates from strategic locations near the entrance to the fiord indicate that the main trunk glacier had retreated about 9 km from its peak LGM position by ~18 ka. Additional TCND and calibrated Schmidt Hammer data from a range of positions within the Milford catchment provide strong evidence that the main trunk glacier receded rapidly after about 18 ka, retreating a further 16 km to a position near the present-day confluence of the Tutoko and Cleddau rivers, by ~16 ka. Available seismic reflection data suggest that post-glacial sediment infill has been strongly influenced by massive deposits of rock avalanche debris. New high-resolution bathymetric and seismic reflection data reveals the presence of at least 18 very large post-glacial rock avalanche deposits which blanket ~40% of the fiord bottom. Geomorphic mapping and field investigation reveal the presence of at least ten additional very large to giant terrestrial landslide deposits in the lower Milford catchment; radiocarbon and surface exposure dating indicate that these events occurred during the Holocene, between ~9-1 ka. Ages of six of these deposits are in agreement with published rupture dates on the southern on-shore portion of the Alpine Fault.

Abstract:
The natural landscape of western North America is being destroyed in the search for mineral resources. There is an opportunity for Landscape Architecture to play a role in the remediation of these sites, in which alternate reclamation plans can be proposed. This project is an exploration of industrial design in the early stages of a mine proposal. By analyzing the site as it sits prior to production, careful consideration of existing landscape elements can aid in better placement of waste material. Communication between the mining industry and affected communities allows for contributions to the final site design and the potential for an alternative end land use. Throughout this project I have explored layering the numerous industrial, social and environmental factors involved, and creating a design where these layers are represented in partnership with each other.

Abstract:
Military dictatorship was a too common feature of Argentine politics for much of the twentieth century. The most recent dictatorship (1976-1983) led by General Videla saw the disappearance of an estimated 30,000 Argentines. In the preceding decade, Argentina had been crippled by a civil war that raged between violent, Cuba-inspired guerrillas and the military. It was in this violent context that Argentine rock music, the best of which was called rock nacional , appeared. Inspired by international rockers like The Beatles and by international student politics such as was seen in Paris in 1968, Argentina's first rockers were at once eager participants in an international rock scene and strident resistors to local violence. From 1965 to 1983, rock nacional went from being a subculture to mass culture. Imprinted in its history and in its most popular hits of that period are references to the violence that pervaded Argentine culture. When dictatorship ended in 1983, Argentines turned to its atrophied judicial system to address the war crimes perpetrated in the previous seven years. However, with the military still a powerful force, 1980s governments bowed to military pressure and legislated impunity laws that destroyed any hopes of judicial retribution. Over a decade after the end of military rule, Argentines in the 1990s sought new means of atonement in commemoration. With anniversaries of the coup coinciding with anniversaries of the first recordings of rock music, and with original rockeros like Charly García and León Gieco still garnering mass audiences, human rights organizations like Las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo and Argentine governments turned to rockeros to animate memory of the dictatorship era. The symbiosis developed between rockeros, Las Madres and Argentine politicians has enabled a commemoration of the Dirty War which recalls only those who suffered at the hands of the military. Ignored in this commemoration are the systemic causes which led to the coup in the first place, guerrilla terrorism, and the uncomfortable fact that many Argentines benefited from the Dirty War era. This study of rock nacional and memory of dictatorship highlights the partisan selections that are being made and illustrates the problems with current commemorative projects in Argentina

Competent rocks often occur brittle failure after peak strength. Behaviors of brittle failure are happened instantly with heavy strength decay, therefor it is very difficult to understand the characteristics of brittle failure on the post-peak. In this research the author investigate the degrees of competent rock post-peak strength loss which affected by confining pressure and foliation angles, in the meanwhile the effect of foliation angles between fractures development and propagation. By using uniaxial and triaxial compression test to obtain the degrees of post-peak strength loss. The results indicate under the low confining pressure, compare to the low foliation angles high foliation angles have lower degrees of post-peak strength loss. With the rising of confining pressure the degrees of post-peak strength are getting lower. Scan the surface of specimen to get the connection between foliation angles and fractures development, the result of scanning showed the fractures develop along the high foliation angles but cross the low foliation angles. The result of AE(acoustic emission) test reflected the brittle failure by a sequels of high instant AE event and the different AE event type between competent rocks and soft rocks. The numerical models have the close simulation result with the experiment result, which illustrate the characteristics of brittle failure and the degrees of post-peak strength loss affected by both confining pressure and foliation angles.

Coulson, Adam Lee. "Investigation of the Pre to Post Peak Strength State and Behaviour of Confined Rock Masses Using Mine Induced Microseismicity." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/19183.

Full text
Abstract:
As hard rock mining progresses into higher stress mining conditions through either late stage extraction or mining at depth, the rock mass is driven not just to the peak strength, but often well into the post-peak until complete ‘failure’ occurs and easier mining conditions become evident. Limited research has been accomplished in identifying the transition of the rock mass and its behaviour into the post-peak and this research investigates this behaviour in detail. As the rock mass progressively fails, fractures are initiated through intact rock and extension and shear failure of these and pre-existing features occurs. Associated with this failure are microseismic events, which can be used to give an indication of the strength state of the rock mass. Based on an analogy to laboratory testing of intact rock and measurement of acoustic emissions, the microseismicity can be used to identify, fracture initiation, coalescence of fractures (yield), localization (peak-strength), accumulation of damage (post-peak) and ultimate failure (residual strength) leading to aseismic behaviour. The case studies presented in this thesis provide an opportunity to examine and analyse rock mass failure into the post-peak, through the regional and confined failures at the Williams and the Golden Giant mines, both in the Hemlo camp in Northern Ontario, Canada. At the Williams mine, the progressive failure of a sill pillar region into the post-peak was analysed; relating the seismic event density, combined with numerical modelling and a spatial and temporal examination of the principal components analysis (PCA), to characterize the extent, trend and state of the yielding zone, which formed a macrofracture shear structure. Observations of conventional displacement instrumentation, indicates regional dilation or shear of the rock mass occurs at or prior to the point of ‘disassociation’ (breakdown of stable PCA trends) when approaching the residual strength. At the Golden Giant mine, the complete process from initiation to aseismic behaviour is monitored in a highly stressed and confined pendent pillar. The PCA technique, numerical modelling and focal mechanism studies are used to define significant stages of the failure process, in which a similar macrofracture structure was formed. Temporal observations of key source parameters show significant changes prior to and at the point of coalescence and localization.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of three post and core systems in endodontically treated teeth by loading to failure, and to measure marginal gaps before and after cyclic loading. Sixty extracted canines were assigned to three groups. The groups tested were: 1) Single cast post and core (Group CP). 2) Prefabricated metal post and composite resin core (Group MR). 3) Glass fiber post and composite resin core (Group FR). All teeth were obturated and prepared to receive a post and core with a coping. Thirty teeth (10 from each group) were loaded to failure, and the other 30 teeth were fatigue-loaded. The marginal gaps on the facial and lingual surface of the fatigue-loaded group were measured before and after cyclic loading. There were two hypotheses for this study. The first was that the FR group would have less marginal gap opening on the lingual surface than the other groups. The second was that the CP group would have a higher load at failure than the other groups. Group CP was found to have a significantly smaller pre-loading marginal gap than group FR (p = 0.0265) and group MR (p = 0.0273), while groups FR and MR did not have a significantly different pre-loading marginal gaps (p = 0.86). Group FR had significantly less change in marginal gap than group MR (p = 0.0013). Groups CP and MR did not have significantly different changes in marginal gap (p = 0.09). Groups CP and FR did not have significantly different changes in marginal gap (p = 0.11). The three post types did not have significantly different maximum loads to failure (p= 0.49), moments of inertia at cervical area (p = 0.75), or moments of inertia at fracture site (p=0.12). There was no significant difference between groups CP, FR, and MR in the load-to-failure test. Group CP demonstrated the highest load-to-failure values; however, the highest load-to-failure mean was for group MR. All fractures observed in this study were catastrophic. Group FR demonstrated better stress distribution and caused no early fractures in the fatigue-loading group. All groups demonstrated significant marginal gap changes on the lingual surface after fatigue loading; however, group FR demonstrated <45 μm marginal gap opening. In group FR, the reduced marginal gap opening was attributed to the use of Panavia 21 with the proper surface treatments to bond to the tooth structure, the resin composite, and the metal coping.

Robinson, Frank Alexander. "Geochronological and geochemical constraints on the lithospheric evolution of the Arabian shield, Saudi Arabia: understanding plutonic rock petrogenesis in an accretionary orogen." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/84674.

Full text
Abstract:
The Arabian-Nubian shield reflects the complex interplay between juvenile oceanic and continental arc fragments accreted during the final stages of Gondwanian super continental assembly. To date, much of the geochronological and geochemical data from the Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia, is absent or poorly constrained and extrapolated from neighbouring Middle Eastern and African countries. Little attention has been paid to the petrogenesis and tectonic significance of the plutonic rocks pursuant to lithospheric orogenesis. A total of 137 samples from 26 geological units were collected from the Midyan, Hijaz, Asir, Tathlith, Afif, Ad Dawadimi and Ha’il terranes with particular emphasis on accretionary suture zone and within plate setting relationships. Extensive data bases are constructed using zircon U-Pb geochronology and Hf isotopes to evaluate Gondwanian significance and whole rock major and trace element geochemistry, Nd, Sm, Sr isotopes and zircon geochemistry to determine their petrogenetic properties. These parameters provide new insight into changing mantle conditions beneath collisional sutures (Yanbu, Nabitah and Halaban) and within plate asthenospheric upwelling. 19 granitic units are subdivided into metaluminous, peraluminous and peralkaline groups that possess distinguished island arc (~950-730Ma), syncollisional (~<730-636Ma), post tectonic (~<636-600Ma) and anorogenic (<600Ma) U-Pb geochronology. These magmatic phases represent accretionary cycles initiating from the dismantlement of Rodinia, closure of the Mozambique Ocean and final Gondwana amalgamation. Evidence for final assembly is recorded at ~525Ma (Najd fault reactivation) which is now the youngest dated magmatism in the Arabian-Nubian Shield and warrants repositioning of the regional unconformity at ~542Ma. Emplacement of sampled Arabian Shield classic A-type post-tectonic and anorogenic granitoids falls into three categories: 1) Intrude sutures immediately following collision which contain extensive mafic cumulate fractionation and N-MORB affiliation. 2) Plate boundary juxtaposed suites without obvious mafic cumulates, but posses contaminated N-MORB geochemistry. 3) Within plate granitoids isolated from plate boundaries and also without obvious mafic cumulates, but with a distinctive enriched (OIB) like asthenospheric mantle source. All categories produce similar felsic endmembers, but contain isotopically distinct mantle source. These are differentiated using a newly developed geochemical scheme (contaminated and enriched mantle granitoids) that is successfully applied to regional Arabian-Nubian examples. The diachronous Nabitah Orogenic Belt symbolises collision and subduction between western oceanic and eastern continental terranes that was terminated by the appearance of category 1 post-tectonic granitoids. This long lived (~50Ma) granitic magmatism contains mingling textures, discrete crystallisation ages, distinguished zircon morphologies and isotopically less juvenile mafics that geochronologically and geochemically reflect magmatic pulsing from a contaminated lower crustal MASH zone. The transition from N-MORB like mafics to isotopically enriched granitoids (isotopically similar to category 3 suites) reflects subduction magmatism followed by slab tear and asthenospheric influx. Conversely, the appearance of category 3 anorogenic plutons is characterised by widespread, tightly constrained (<10Ma) magmatism that is geochemically enriched, economic and symbolic of lithospheric delamination and asthenospheric (OIB like) upwelling. Differences between category 1, 2 and 3 zircon geochemistry constrain further contaminated and enriched mantle source behaviour that produces similar felsic products from distinguished petrogenetic processes. In summary, the work presented in this thesis establishes clear distinctions between accretionary syncollisional suites and anorogenic suites, but more significantly, post-orogenic plutons confined to suture zones from those confined to within plate settings. This allows new petrogenetic insights into changing juvenile mantle beneath the Arabian Shield.

Ilivitsky, Susan. "Making sense of sudden personal transformation: a qualitative study on people’s beliefs about the facilitative factors and mechanisms of their abrupt and profound inner change." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/3383.

Full text
Abstract:
Sudden personal transformation (SPT) was defined as a subjectively reported, positive, profound, and lasting personal change that follows a relatively brief and memorable inner experience. Although such change has been described in numerous biographies, works of fiction, and religious and scholarly texts, a consistent definition and systematic program of research is lacking in the psychological literature. Moreover, almost nothing is known about what causes such change from the subjective point of view of individuals who have experienced it first hand. This study used semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to explore the common beliefs of three participants about the factors that facilitated and the mechanisms that caused their SPT. Findings reveal that all participants reported a life transition, feeling miserable, feeling exhausted, feeling unable to resolve adverse circumstances, reaching a breaking point, and support from others facilitated their individual SPT’s. All participants also indicated that a formalized activity or ceremony as well as a process outside of their conscious control (either a higher power or a deep inner wisdom) produced or caused their SPT’s. Implications for future research and counselling practice are discussed.

Abstract:

A marked proliferation in the publication of literary nonfiction globally led to the classification of such texts as a fourth genre. The political transition in South Africa in 1994 caused a similar increase in autobiographical texts in which commentary is offered on the South African political reality through the telling of both personal and collective histories. Daymond and Visagie (2012) identify autoethnography, apologia and confession as characteristics of post-1994 South African autobiographies. In this research report some contemporary writers’ autobiographies, respectively those of Elsa Joubert (’n Wonderlike geweld: jeugherinneringe (2005); Reisiger (2009)), André P. Brink (’n Vurkin die pad (2009)) and Koos Kombuis (Seks & drugs & boeremusiek: die memoirs van ‘n volksverraaier (2000); Die tyd van die Kombi’s: ‘n persoonlike blik op die Afrikaanse rock-rebellie (2009)) are evaluated using the criteria proposed by Daymond and Visagie. The description and interpretation of various autoethnographical markers confirm that these autobiographies can be considered a form of cultural introspection.
