A visual basic based front-end, for a labyrinth seal analysis program, has been designed herein. In order to accurately predict the excitation force, proper modeling of labyrinth leak path is important. Thus, the front-end developed herein incorporates a leak-path geometric diagram for visual analysis of labyrinth leak path and tooth location. Furthermore, to investigate influence of various operating conditions and gas properties on excitation force (effective cross-coupling stiffness), a parametric study is performed on both the eye seal and the balance piston labyrinth seal.

This thesis presents circuit design of the post-processor used in low density parity check (LDPC) decoders to reduce error floors in wireless communication systems. The error floor often occurs in LDPC decoders. It can be divided into quantization errors and absorbing errors. We have proposed the reset layer min sum algorithm (R-LMSA) previously to improve the error floor phenomenon due to the quantization error of the LDPC decoder without hardware overhead. It can make the error floor lower than 10-6, which meets the specifications of the popular wireless communication systems. However, it can not satisfy the system requiring BER less than 10-7. In this thesis, in addition to improve the R-LMSA, we investigate and analyze the error floor caused by absorbing errors, then improve the previously proposed check node tracing with boundary search (CNTBS) algorithm. Through simulation, one extra reset was inserted into the pre-determined eight iterations, and the variable boundary and check node tracing with boundary invert (CNTBI) is proposed to make the error floor do not appear when the BER close to 10-9. Finally, the proposed post-processor algorithm was implemented using field programmable gate array (FPGA) based on the look up table (LUT) method to minimize the circuit complexity. The occupied FPGA resource is approximately 1/2 of the LDPC decoder required.

The purpose of this study is to establish a standard post-processor for a specified multi-spindle machine tool, and build a virtual machine for machining simulation. This post-processor can generate standard NC codes by CL path information. A multi-spindle machine tool NC-2432/LV was used to verify this post-processor embedded in a specified CAM system. Computer-aided simulation machining can help users to identify possible NC code error in machining process, spindle interference and collision, and whether machined part meets design requirement or not? Post-processor can convert tool paths generated by a CAM system into NC codes that CNC machine tool can accept. It is a important interface between design and manufacturing; as a of multi-spindle machine tool is operated much more complicated than ordinary standard single-spindle one, its post-processor design is more complex, too. This study aimed to create a post-processor and generate NC code for a specified multi-spindle machine tool, and establish machining model the same as actual machine by virtual machining software for simulation validation. The results proved that the post-processor established in this study can be applied in actual machining.

This thesis deals with not only the tool path planning and cutting deviation analysis for sculptured surface machining but also kinematic transformation algorithms for different types of 5-axis machine centers. A generalized expression is presented first to define the cutting contact location for any type of milling tools. The actual cutting contact point and the cutter location can be determined by tool orientation angles. Furthermore, the gouge avoidance criterion is utilized with the admissible tool orientation classification and a localization algorithm is derived to calculate error estimation along tool paths. The inverse kinematics between two independent chains about the tool and workpiece is solved and the tool compensation procedure is established for each 5-axis machine configuration. Computer implementation and illustrative examples are also executed for qualitative and quantitative analysis. The theoretical and practical issues associated with this thesis could help to generate 5-axis CNC tool paths automatically from CAD model and to promote general post-processor developement for futher applications.

In DNA Sequence Assembly, assembly tools align and merge high-throughput DNA sequences to reconstruct original DNA sequence. In the general assembly flow, the pre-processor first filters out low quality reads to decrease the error rate as well as the problem size. Secondly, bases are changed from the 2-base color coding to pseudo bases that are compatible with general assembly tools. The second step is sequence assembly. After assembly, the post-processor changes pseudo-base results back to genome sequences. Since each of the three steps takes about 1/3 of the total computation time, we decide first to improve the performance of the pre-filter and post-processor. In this study, we proposed a pre-filter and post-processor hardware design for the assembly tool, Velvet. In the pre-filter, due to hardware advantages of parallel processing and pipelining, reads can be filtered efficiently. The execution time is linearly proportional to the number of reads but independent of the read length. In addition, it is a scalable architecture to speed up further by increasing the number of parallel computational units. As for the post-processor, we propose a new approach to change pseudo bases back to real bases by using only first several short reads in the whole sequence and the Velvet results which is also implemented in a pipeline manner. The chips are implemented with TSMC 90 nm technology. It is capable of processing 256 M reads and the maximum read length is 63. The two chip sizes are 2367051 um2 and 774724 um2, and the chips operate at 100 MHz. When compared to software approaches, the speed-up of the pre-filter and post-processor are as high as 11000 times and 34000 times, respectively.

[EN] The predictive uncertainty quantification in monthly streamflows is crucial to make reliable hydrological predictions that help and support decision-making in water resources management. Hydrological post-processing methods are suitable tools to estimate the predictive uncertainty of deterministic streamflow predictions (hydrological model outputs). In general, this thesis focuses on improving hydrological post-processing methods for assessing the conditional predictive uncertainty of monthly streamflows. This thesis deal with two issues of the hydrological post-processing scheme i) the heteroscedasticity problem and ii) the intractable likelihood problem. Mainly, this thesis includes three specific aims. First and relate to the heteroscedasticity problem, we develop and evaluate a new post-processing approach, called GMM post-processor, which is based on the Bayesian joint probability modelling approach and the Gaussian mixture models. Besides, we compare the performance of the proposed post-processor with the well-known exiting post-processors for monthly streamflows across 12 MOPEX catchments. From this aim (chapter 2), we find that the GMM post-processor is the best suited for estimating the conditional predictive uncertainty of monthly streamflows, especially for dry catchments. Secondly, we introduce a method to quantify the conditional predictive uncertainty in hydrological post-processing contexts when it is cumbersome to calculate the likelihood (intractable likelihood). Sometimes, it can be challenging to estimate the likelihood itself in hydrological modelling, especially working with complex models or with ungauged catchments. Therefore, we propose the ABC post-processor that exchanges the requirement of calculating the likelihood function by the use of some sufficient summary statistics and synthetic datasets. With this aim in mind (chapter 3), we prove that the conditional predictive distribution is similarly produced by the exact predictive (MCMC post-processor) or the approximate predictive (ABC post-processor), qualitatively speaking. This finding is significant because dealing with scarce information is a common condition in hydrological studies. Finally, we apply the ABC post-processing method to estimate the uncertainty of streamflow statistics obtained from climate change projections, such as a particular case of intractable likelihood problem. From this specific objective (chapter 4), we find that the ABC post-processor approach: 1) offers more reliable projections than 14 climate models (without post-processing); 2) concerning the best climate models during the baseline period, produces more realistic uncertainty bands than the classical multi-model ensemble approach.
