Abstract:
Since the 1980s, feminism and post-colonialism began to exchange and dialogue, forming a new interpretation space, that is, post-colonial feminist cultural theory. There is a very complicated relationship between post-colonialism and feminism, both in practice and theory. It was obvious that they have always been consistent as both cultural theories focus on the marginalization of the "other" that is marginalized by the ruling structure, consciously defending their interests. Post-structuralism is used to deny the common foundation of patriarchy and colonialism—the thinking mode of binary opposition. However, only in the most recent period, Postcolonialism and feminism "Running" is more "near", it is almost like an alliance. (The factor contributing to this alliance is that both parties recognize their limitations.) Furthermore, for quite some time there have been serious conflicts between these two equally famous critical theories. They have been deeply divided on issues, such as how to evaluate the third world women’s liberation, how to view the relationship between imperialism and feminism, and how to understand that colonialists use the standards of feminism to support their "civilization mission." This article has greatly benefited from the perspectives and materials of Leela Gandhi's Postcolonial Theory; A Critical Introduction.

For a Canadian, a walk through the streets of an Australian city can be a disorienting experience. The memories of empire linger in both countries, and it comes as a shock to find that Melbourne, with its streetcars, Victorian buildings and streets named after empire builders and their battles, is more familiar than Chicago.

Liao, Xintian. "Colonialism, post-colonialism and local identity in colonial Taiwanese landscape paintings (1908-1945)." Thesis, Birmingham City University, 2002. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.248603.

Full text
Abstract:
The author identifies the formation of a Taiwanese identity from representations of landscape painting as introduced by Japanese colonisers and responded to by Taiwanese between 1908 and 1945. The first of two primary findings is that the history of discovering Taiwan can be traced via such visual records as maps, photographs, and landscape paintings from the seventeenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Landscape paintings represented the peak of this course of discovery. From the untamed to the civilised, the Taiwanese landscape was the site of adventure and travel activities, through which the Japanese imperial goals of modernisation for its colony were revealed. The second finding is that visual representations of landscape painting stands as evidence of an uneven relationship within which a European visual model was transported to Taiwan. Furthermore, it was found that representations of Taiwanese landscape paintings reflected a spectacle of modem life. Finally, the formation of Taiwanese local identity was discussed from the perspectives of "local colour," the culturalisation of Taiwanesen ature, and problems of identification. The concept of "local colour" as expressed in Taiwanese landscape paintings reveals a contradictory situation and predicament of local identity. With regards to the culturalisation of nature, the Taiwanese landscape was re-represented by a new aesthetic order and visual layout. Four local configuration stages (1895-1908,1908-1927,1927-1940, and 1940-1945) generalised the visual identification process. According to this analysis, colonial Taiwanese landscape painting emerged in order to fulfill the expectations of an imagined viewer, thus making identification with the environment through landscape paintings problematic. The primary conclusion of this thesis is that the discovery and representation of Taiwanese landscape during the colonial period revealed specific conditions of colonialism and modernity. For local Taiwanese, the predicament of identification was projected and acknowledged in the making of visual art.

Abstract:
This thesis is in the form of a novel about three work colleagues who, as part of their job, have to drive long distances together. The story is told from the perspective of all of them but mainly from one of the women who tells the story in the first person. The man and two women are so different from each other in personality and outlook on life, and the basis of the novel is their interactions with each other, the frictions within their relationships, and the thoughts that go through their heads while they are driving. These people spend long hours together in the car and in motel rooms yet they never get any closer to each other. The only one of them who seems to get anything from the experience is the woman who is in the first person, as she achieves a greater sense of her own identity. The other two regard the experiences as just another job and of no great importance in their lives.

Wan-Ahmad, Sharifah Sophia. "Culture, power and resistance : post-colonialism, autobiography and Malaysian independence." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/176/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examines the relationship between the representation of colonial history and the elite claim of authority in Malaysia. Specifically, it investigates the claim that Malayan independence was achieved through a peaceful struggle. In order to address this claim, it was important to examine: 1. The representation of the colonial period in national history 2. UMNO dominance in politics, economy and culture, and its claim of almost total authority for the achievement of Malaysian independence. 3. The extent to which the UMNO claim has hindered the development of democratic forces. The excavation of supplementary and alternative narratives of Malaysian history has been central for this research. In particular, the mainstream representation of history is challenged through autobiographical revelation. The thesis focuses on the formation of the dominant representation during the colonial era, showing how the process suppressed other perspectives. ‘Radical’ nationalism during anti-colonial struggle in the period after the Second World War, from 1945 to 1957, is explored. The perspectives and experiences of radical nationalists are used as the basis for a critique of the dominant discourse of the post-independence political elites. In particular, the emergence of autobiographical fragments has enabled exploration of mundane but abiding resistance. While some notable differences are found in the character of resistance, there remains a persistent theme of democratic aspiration in the counter-narratives of Malaysian politics and society, alongside the persisting elite structures of politics and culture extending from the colonial through to the post-colonial eras. The analysis of the autobiographical reflections of radical nationalists demonstrates levels of cultural resistance which have not been recognised until now.

Abstract:
Traditional Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology has been predicated on traditional systems of thought, such as colonialism and that the west has been a purveyor of intellectual work and its traditions. Consequently, the shaping of Asian and non-Asian academic and industrial sector have emerged to separate these two regions, though dynamically. This paper seeks to provide a new framework for Anthropologically describing Asian Linguistic and Cultural contexts, which show great contradiction. The paper builds on colonialism and post colonialism, and then draws on a comparative ethnography of Asian and non-Asian regions, to present that the symbolic typologies of each of these regions show contradiction. The paper then presents that these contradictions speak against both traditional notions of Asia and nonAsia, and that traditional Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology can become modal, and can be realigned to incorporate complex perspectives in the symbolic analysis of language and culture.

Abstract:
French philosopher of technology Gilbert Simondon is undoubtedly one of the key figures when it comes to conceptualizing individuation across physical, mental and social strata. In this article, we develop a rather overlooked aspect of Simondon’s work, namely how his ontogenetic project also implies an idea of a “human science” based on a “human energetics,” which—maybe in spite of its name—is an inherently transhumanist project transducing across both disciplinary and experiential fields, with a particular emphasis on the role of technology. We present key concepts in Simondon’s work and relate them to lines of thinking on energies in the arts (Kahn) and post-colonialism (Wynter), exemplified through an analysis of Nigerian artist Otobong Nkanga’s video work “Remains of the Green Hill.” Our primary aim with the article is to continue a mobilization of Simondonian concepts and thinking for an experimental, transhumanist exploration in relation to its ethico-aesthetic and artistic potential.

Abstract:
How do we as researchers and educators discern how past institutions of higher education responded to pandemics and other social stresses, and what practices we can adopt from them? Combining Jussi Parikka’s ideas of media archeology with the radical post-colonialism of Nonwestern Educational Traditions by Timothy Reagan, this research explores specific artifacts of western and nonwestern systems of education innovation at specific periods in history, how these institutions responded to crises and pandemics, and what this suggests to our contemporary post-literate networked system of higher education. The emerging field of Media Archeology suggests a literature review mash-up and remix to find under-represented historical ideas around pedagogy and higher education. The impacts of these education innovations are seen through the artifacts such as ‘open plan’ school architecture, educational broadcasting, and proto-internet distance learning classes. Each of these dyads of a western tradition of higher education contrasted with a non-western or resistance tradition of higher education has left artifacts and practices that have been able to escape intentional destruction or cultural appropriation into current western hegemonies. By standing outside the constraints and politics of corporate narratives, these artifacts can point the way toward reviving educational systems based on techniques and technologies that can address the systematic problems with higher education. This study of media, sociology, education, and history seeks to suggest workable practices for a post-COVID world, that resists hegemonic practices and corporatization of education and addresses new challenges in the future.

Ivanyshyn, Petro. BASIC CONCEPTS OF YEVHEN MALANIUK’S NATIONAL-PHILOSOPHICAL INTERPRETATION: ESEISTIC DISCOURSE. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11070.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to outline the structure of the main methodological ideas within the frames of interpretive thinking in the essay of the famous Vistnyk’s writer, critic and essayist Yevhen Malaniuk. Considering the purpose and tasks of the studio, an interdisciplinary methodological base, related to the author’s “national approach”, has been worked out. The epistemological potential of national philosophy as a philosophy of national existence, national science as a theory of nation, hermeneutics as a theory and practice of interpretation and post-colonialism as interpretation of cultural phenomena from the standpoint of anti- and post-imperial consciousness are used in the work. The scientific novelty is that on the basis of the previous hermeneutic generalization and definition of national-existential methodology, a propaedeutic outlining of the structure of national-philosophical concepts within the frames of the essayistic interpretation of reality in Ye. Malaniuk is proposed. In the methodological sense, the writer’s essayism is structured by such concepts as nation-centrism, idealism, voluntarism, heroism, and can be considered as one of the variants (close by the experiences of D. Dontsov, Yu. Lypa, M. Mukhyn, etc.) of the Vistnyk’s national-philosophical (national-existential, nationalistic or nation-centric) hermeneutics, that is, the way of understanding, which the author by himself outlined as a “national approach”. The support of Ye. Malaniuk as a culture-philosopher and exegete on the eternal nation-centric values and criteria in his essayistic studies makes his reflections not only historically interesting, but also theoretically productive, classically important for the development of modern Ukrainian hermeneutics and humanities in general.
