Abstract:
What is theory? Who does theory? And what can theory do? Is theory important as humans strive to explain, understand, and speak to the nature of their lives? For the re-launch of Anthropological Theory, Julia Eckert, Stephen Reyna, and Nina Glick Schiller, the new editors, challenged members of the Editorial Board to offer their understanding of the nature of anthropological theory. In response, 12 contributors discussed the central theoretical questions and debates that are confronting anthropology, which they collectively understand as a project that explores what it means to be human and whether the human project can survive. Contributors highlight the importance of positioning theory in relationship to the historic project of decolonizing anthropology, current debates about ‘southern theory’ and the ontological turn, and the need to place theory in relationship to structures of power. In ‘Positioning Theory: An Introduction’, I note the way each contributor approaches the question of who is theory for and whose voice it represents, examining theory as both tool and vision in struggles to understand the world and in transformative struggles for social justice.

Joint-typical Industrial robots tend to have higher repetitive positioning accuracy and lower absolute positioning accuracy. In order to improve the absolute positioning accuracy of robots, this paper puts forward a compensation algorithm based on the mapping theory combining with the kinematics equation, which establish the connection between the space of off-line programming and teaching-programming, so as to approximate the repeat positioning accuracy. A experiment is implemented to confirm its correctness, and the result shows that the supposed method can improve the absolute positioning accuracy heavily, which the absolute positioning error reduces from 8.32mm to 1.08mm.

Abstract:
Developed as a socio-constructivist theory with the aim of understanding discursive construction of selves, Positioning Theory has been applied to the analysis of conversations and narratives across disciplines. This paper provides an overview of Positioning Theory developed by Rom Harré and his colleagues and describes the basic concepts and principles of the theory. By illustrating how it has been applied to studies in contexts that involve English language learners or teachers, the paper identifies ways that Positioning Theory may positively impact classroom practice and outlines areas for further research that EMI classroom practitioners can carry out. A number of practical guidelines for conducting positioning analysis are also offered.

Abstract:
Abstract Tony Lawson has recently advanced a theory of social positioning, in terms of which various aspects of social reality are conceptualised. A central idea of the theory of social positioning is that social relations are ultimately power relationships, which structure how social phenomena are organised. This article further explores this idea, while also conceptualising various forms of power, such as coercion, manipulation, domination and subjectification, drawing on the theory of social positioning. In so doing, the theory of social positioning is also used to explain how institutionalisation influences the dynamics of empowerment and disempowerment, and its implications for human development and dehumanisation.

Abstract This exploratory case study uses multimodal positioning analysis to determine and describe how a purposefully crafted emergent artifact comes to influence and/or manipulate social dynamics, structure, and positionings of one design team comprised of five third-graders in an afterschool elementary engineering and literacy club. In addition to social semiotic theories of multimodality (e.g., Kress, G. (2010). Multimodality: a social semiotic approach to contemporary communication. New York, NY: Routledge) and multimodal interactional analysis (Norris, S. (2004). Analyzing multimodal interaction: a methodological framework. New York, NY: Routledge, Norris, S. (2019). Systematically working with multimodal data: research methods in multimodal discourse analysis. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley-Blackwell), Positioning Theory (Harré, R. and Van Langenhove, L. (1991). Varieties of positioning. J. Theor. Soc. Behav. 21: 393–407) is used to examine group interactions with the artifact, with observational data collected from audio, video, researcher field notes, analytic memos, photographs, student artifacts (e.g., drawn designs, built designs), and transcriptions of audio and video data. Analysis of interactions of the artifact as it unfolds demonstrates multiple types of role-based positioning with students (e.g., builder, helper, idea-sharer). Foregrounding analysis of the artifact, rather than the student participants, exposed students’ alignment or opposition with their groupmates during the project. This study contributes to multimodal and artifactual scholarship through a close examination of positions emergent across time through multimodal communicative actions and illustrates how perspectives on multimodality may be analytically combined with Positioning Theory.

<p>The article addresses the emerging framework of ‘positioning theory’, which has become influential in educational theory. We will present the central concepts and ideas of ‘positioning theory’ and subsequently how they are being used to contribute to educational theory. We will focus on an article by Svend Brinkmann where he uses ‘positioning theory’ as the foundation for moral education. Seemingly, Brinkmann uses ‘positioning theory’ rather uncritically in an attempt to ‘strengthen’ the educational process by introducing fixed categorisations and concepts to it. Contrary to this approach, we will use the educational theories of Knud Grue-Sørensen and Gert Biesta to emphasise how we instead should recognise what is here defi ned as the ‘weakness’ of educational theory, and how we have to consider both the adaptive element of education as well as the emancipatory element of it.</p>

Abstract:
WSN’s practical application has high level of spontaneity in positioning information and is susceptible to the outside interference, which may lead to the reduction of positioning accuracy. This paper studies Gauss distribution function, the single sensor batch estimate fusion theory and RSSI positioning technique based on the design of the CC2430/1 wireless sensor network positioning system hardware and puts forward a kind of positioning algorithm of WSN based on the Gauss distribution function and batch estimation fusion theory. The algorithm first uses Gauss model to analyse RSSI, reject RSSI value of a small probability event through the Gauss model, and then applies single sensor batch estimation fusion theory to estimate in batches the fushion theory’s calculation of the RSSI value of high probability events as the RSSI value of the final positioning operation. Experiments show that using this algorithm, the positioning precision of the system can be improved to be within 0.5 meters.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to broaden and sharpen the use of positioning in social science inquiry. Historically, positioning has either been aligned with ethogenic and ontological constructionist views of discourse/identity or post-structural projects interested in positioning as means to uncovering how people’s minds work or how an ordered extant exterior world shapes and constitutes human action. Rather than looking through acts of positioning to minds or worlds, the present chapter offers an epistemic discursive psychological view of positioning as sets of local discursive processes whereby speakers elegantly exploit the features of ordinary talk so as to make relevant their own and/or other’s identities as part of some social business that has an interactional logic as well as here-and-now relational consequences. The discursive dexterity of positioning is illustrated through an analysis of the negotiation of gendered identity categories.

Abstract:
This paper sets out to test the possibilities of the Positioning Theory as a means to approach small group phenomena from a micro-cultural perspective. The study draws on a transcription of a videotaped inter-professional team meeting in the field of social services. Analysis of the data was set to examine how the basic concepts of the Positioning Theory suit the analysis of in-group phenomena, what different forms of positioning are present, and how the positioning is connected to the group processes. Studying the group’s interaction shows how it is possible to approach the interaction via the basic concepts of the Positioning Theory and how the positioning is intervened with group processes, such as decision-making, arguing, and conflict. The study also offers a new theoretical and empirical perspective to the research on small group dynamics.

Abstract:
The process of responding to supervisory feedback requires student writers to position themselves toward both the provider and content of that feedback, indicating their stance in the interaction and their evolving disciplinary competence. How positionings are discursively shaped, developed, and enacted to influence thesis revisions, however, has been relatively unexplored. In this article, we trace how two master’s students construct their positions in supervisory interactions and in the subsequent revisions of their literature review drafts. Through discourse and intertextual analyses, we propose three dimensions of interpersonal positioning ( cooperative, self-assertive, explorative) that are co-constructed to reinforce local supervisory cooperation and modify conceptualizations of the research work. We highlight scaffolded, responsive, and reflexive types as concrete expressions of mediated positioning which help regulate the ways students orientate to their writing and their discipline.

Flexible and conformal positioning of the skin is of great significance for the efficient and low deformation assembly of aircraft panels. As the main conformal positioning part of the skin, the fixture positioning surface is complicated to design when taking into account the flexible positioning. In this study, taking the low deformation and flexible clamping of the skin under complex stress conditions as the target, a fixture positioning profile design method is proposed to predict the deformation of the skin and provide moderate support for the skin based on thin plate theory (TPT). In the face of complex stress and boundary conditions of the skin, the differential method is used to solve the stress and deformation of the skin under different support conditions, which is correctly verified by finite element simulation. The proposed method reveals the influence of the fixture positioning profile on the deflection of the aircraft skin under concentrated load (drilling force), which provides a good design theoretical basis for the fixture design for the low deformation flexible clamping of the skin.

Abstract:
In this commentary, we identify key influences on mathematics education that are largely outside the domain of the academic world in which most mathematics education researchers live. The groups that we identify–including the media, companies and foundations, and other academic domains–affect the public's perception of mathematics and mathematics education. Identifying this set of influences in particular is important because these groups often shape policymakers' viewpoints and decisions, but there is not always agreement between mathematics education researchers and these groups about the ways in which mathematics and mathematics education are framed. Whenever a conflict is brought to the foreground, it can be difficult to raise issues without appearing defensive or sounding querulous. It is helpful, then, to bring to bear a theory that can help us interpret this reality (Mewborn, 2005); theories can provide a way to encode, read, and examine a problem as well as offer insights into the design of new practices (Silver & Herbst, 2007). In this case, we use positioning theory to examine potential conflicts between mathematics education researchers and other groups because it offers interesting interpretive insights into the phenomenon and because it can lead to potential strategies for working toward different positionings for mathematics education researchers. We begin by explaining relevant ideas from positioning theory, including storylines, positions, and communication actions. We then use these ideas to highlight current storylines underlying communication by the abovementioned groups about mathematics and mathematics education and trace some of their historical and contextual roots. We argue that mathematics education researchers can intervene to shift these storylines and positionings and to have greater impact on policy, practice, and public perception in the future. Finally, we end by offering specific suggestions for beginning this work.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamics of social positioning and interpersonal conflicts in management teams. This paper utilizes positioning theory to analyze team conflicts by combining microlevel interaction analysis and explicit, meso-level team research in the context of managerial work. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on an analysis of 34 conflict episodes that occurred during management board meetings conducted by two Finnish public research institutions. By analyzing naturally occurring interactions and video material, this paper presents a discursive analysis of conflict from the perspective of positioning theory, focusing on local moral orders, social positions and the construction of dialogue. Findings This study’s findings illuminate how team conflicts may be understood in terms of positioning theory, as well as how positioning is connected to managing conflicts and constructing either degenerative or generative dialogue in teams. The present study indicates possibilities for applying positioning theory as a methodological tool when studying team interactions and dialogue. Practical implications The study offers practical implications regarding team conflict management. By developing an understanding of the positioning dynamics of managers and other team members, one can help create constructive and generative dialogue in teams. Originality/value From a methodological perspective, this paper presents a novel approach to the study of team conflicts and outlines several suggestions regarding the theoretical approach in the analysis of team interaction and dynamics.

Abstract:
To address the problems of the large positioning error and long positioning time of the traditional positioning strategy, namely, the two-phase simultaneous power-off method (TPSPM), a new positioning strategy, called the first single-phase then two-phase power-off method (FSPTTPPM), based on the ultrasonic friction reduction theory, has been proposed in this work. This method realizes zero sliding displacement between the friction material and the stator during the torsional oscillation of the shaft by controlling the driving circle frequency and the duration of the single-phase power-off period, which reduces the deviation of the displacement reservation value. In order to verify the correctness of the driving mechanism, a test platform has been built, and two positioning strategies have been used for experimental verification. The following experimental results have been obtained: compared to TPSPM, FSPTTPPM has the advantages of higher positioning accuracy and short positioning time. In terms of the positioning accuracy, the relative errors of the displacement reservation values of FSPTTPPM and TPSPM vary with the initial angular velocity (0.24 to 1.18 rad/s) in the range of −0.4 to 0.1 and −0.8 to 0.8, respectively. In addition, the relative error of the displacement reservation value is closer to zero than that of TPSPM at the same initial angular velocity. In terms of the positioning time, when the initial angular velocity is greater than 0.7 rad/s, the positioning time of the FSPTTPPM is approximately 10 ms smaller than that of the TPSPM.

Abstract:
Abstract The argument of this paper is that the neglect of John Commons’s monetary theorising is in large part due to his contributions being insufficiently situated in his broader framework of analysis where community rights and duties are emphasised as essential features of social reality. It is further argued that the sophistication and significance of Commons’s account of money can be appreciated once it is recognised as a variant of the recently developed positioning theory of money. It is shown that the positioning theory of money in its modern form serves to clarify the aspects of Commons’s writings on money and can, in turn, be enriched by certain of Commons’s insights.

Abstract:
"Li Ning" is a well-known Chinese sporting goods company ("Li Ning Company") The brand had achieved great success in the Chinese market. However, due to increasingly tough international competition and the increasing proportion of the market share of foreign brands in China, Li Ning's business situation between 2012 and 2015 was not promising. Against this backdrop, Li Ning took the initiative to transform the company's brand strategy with a new image and a new slogan and achieved significant results. 2015 saw Li Ning end three consecutive years of losses. After reversing the crisis, Li Ning underwent another comprehensive strategic adjustment, with the brand focusing on rejuvenation and internationalisation. this adjustment had little effect in the short term but achieved the desired results in the long-term adjustment and refinement. in 2022, Li Ning, the leading Chinese professional sports brand, made its debut on the list of top 50 apparel brands released by strategic consulting firm Brand Finance and became Li Ning the fastest growing brand on the list. This paper analyses Li Ning's business strategy using positioning theory in the context of the company's recent financial statements and considers the company's successful transformation. By analysing the reasons for Li Ning's successful transformation, the paper provides a reference for other sports brands and points out the specific role of positioning theory in brand transformation

Abstract:
This authors attempt to determine the relationship between positioning and discourse from the standpoint of the media communication approach (based on the theory of philology and the theory of communication). The subject of the research is positioning as a discursive strategy. The work uses a set of methods: synthesis, comparative analysis, interpretive analysis. On the one hand, the study of positioning as a discursive practice involves an analysis of discourse; on the other hand, the designation of positioning as a discursive strategy focuses on the tools of achievement (the communicative moves used during positioning). A theoretical substantiation of positioning as a discursive strategy is proposed, which is based on discourse - speech, “immersed in life” (term by N.D. Arutyunova), which, according to the author's interpretation, acts as a means of communication. It is concluded that positioning is both a communicative influence directed at the consciousness of the receiving party and a manipulative phenomenon, the realization of which occurs through the influence on the connections existing in the consciousness of the individual. In turn, the actor operating with positioning is able to achieve many goals in the course of the implementation of the communicative act.
