Mason, Peggy. The Vestibular Sense. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190237493.003.0018.

Full text
Abstract:
The vestibular system contains semicircular canals that respond to angular acceleration and otoconial organs that respond to linear acceleration of the head. Information is sent to the motor system and, under normal circumstances, does not lead to conscious perception. Yet damage to the vestibular system can result in disequilibrium or vertigo, disturbing perceptions that dominate conscious experience. The shared residence of the cochlear and vestibular end organs in the inner ear can give rise to inner ear disorders such as Ménière’s disease. The effect of gravity on the otoconial masses in the sacculus and utriculus enable detection of static head tilt. Age-related disequilibrium, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, motion sickness, and alcohol intoxication–induced vertigo are explained. How natural head movements elicit combined canal and otoconial organ responses is described. Finally, the dependence of posture and gaze on vestibular inputs is introduced as a segue to the next chapter.

Häusermann, Silja. Social Democracy and the Welfare State in Context: The Conditioning Effect of Institutional Legacies and Party Competition. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198807971.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter links shifts in the social democratic electorate to the positions of social democratic parties on new and old welfare state policies and explains the programmatic responsiveness of social democratic parties to their new constituency with institutional policy legacies and party competition. The chapter demonstrates that shifts to middle-class electoral constituencies are correlated with shifts toward a progressive position on the socio-cultural dimension of political competition, and an increased support for social investment policies on the economic dimension. Importantly, however, the new middle-class electorate does not withdraw social democrats’ support for traditional welfare policies. Both institutional legacies and party competition moderate the link between these shifts in the electorate and party positions.

Full text
Abstract:
The White effect is an illusion in which gray test patches of identical luminance placed on the black and white bars of a square-wave grating appear different in brightness/lightness. The effect has received much attention because the direction of the brightness change does not correlate with the amount of black or white border in contact with the gray test patch or its general vicinity. The test patch on the black bar appears lighter than the test patch on the white bar despite changes in test patch height or inducing grating spatial frequency. In addition, although the test patch shows a smooth change in brightness/lightness as its spatial position is varied relative to the inducing grating, spatial inhomogeneities in brightness/lightness within the test patch are also visible. A large number of “higher-level” explanations have been offered for the White effect; only the oriented-difference-of-Gaussians model can account for all of these properties.

Hein, Elisabeth. The Ternus Effect. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0099.

Full text
Abstract:
The Ternus effect refers to an ambiguous apparent motion display in which two or three elements presented in succession and shifted horizontally by one position can be perceived as either a group of elements moving together or as one element jumping across the other(s). This chapter introduces the phenomenon and describes observations made by Pikler and Ternus in the beginning of the twentieth century. Next, reasons for continued interest in the Ternus effect are discussed and an overview of factors that influence it offered, including low-level image-based factors, for example luminance, as well as higher-level scene-based factors, for example perceptual grouping. The chapter ends with a discussion of theories regarding the mechanisms underlying the Ternus effect, providing insight into how the visual system is able to perceive coherent objects in the world despite discontinuities in the input (e.g., as a consequence of eye movements or object occlusion).

Full text
Abstract:
The Mona Lisa effect is the phenomenon in which certain portraits appear to direct their gaze at observers almost regardless of where observers are located with respect to the picture. This phenomenon has been well known for almost 2,000 years, yet it has not been studied much. The effect does not essentially depend on the motion of the observer. Rather, the effect is due to the fact that perception of gaze direction of a “looker” does not depend only on the position of the irises within the sclera but also on the orientation of the looker’s head with respect to the observer.
