Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to compare sorting and ranking methods for prioritization of rehabilitation interventions of sewers, taking into account risk, performance and cost. For that purpose multiple criteria decision-aid (MCDA) methods such as ELECTRE TRI for sorting and ELECTRE III for ranking are applied in a real case-study and the results obtained are compared. The case study is a small sanitary sewer system from a Portuguese utility located in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. The problem to investigate is the prioritization of the sewer candidates for rehabilitation. The decision maker (a panel group of specialists) has chosen five assessment measures: water level and maximum flow velocity (hydraulic performance indices), sewer importance and failure repair cost (collapse-related consequences of failure) and the risk of collapse. The results show that the outcomes from ELECTRE III are easier to understand than those from ELECTRE TRI method. Two different sets of weights were used, and the sorting and ranking results from both methods were found to be sensitive to them. ELECTRE TRI method is not straightforward as it involves technical parameters that are difficult to define, such as reference profiles and cut levels.

Abstract:
Forensic sciences aggregate a series of scientific and technological domains that aid the judiciary and judicial system. Despite the highly specialized and qualified professionals taking a role in forensic practice, this paradigmatic integration of law, science, and technology often leads them to face significant ethical challenges. Indeed, forensic sciences hold a unique position due to the social and legal implications inherent to forensic expertise. The potential interference with personal rights and freedoms requires the professional practice of the forensic specialist to be guided by alignment with scientific-technical competence under the seal of the highest ethical principles. However, the absence of a specific statutory regulation blurs the performance of the forensic professional and may harm the professional credibility but also the scientific domain as a whole. The existence of ethical pillars is essential to support professional practice, following international recommendations in this regard. Herein, we propose a framework for a code of ethics and conduct that is based on the professional particularities characterizing the forensic practice but also considers the ethical issues that are mandatory to ensure high levels of reliability and credibility of forensic specialists.

Abstract:
In this paper data will be provided from an ongoing study on academic satisfaction in Portuguese higher education. The realization of this study is providing a diverse range of information on multiple dimensions of the faculty job in higher education, in particular dimensions of satisfaction, as well as dimensions of the academic career and the professional context in which it is exercised. In the context of this paper we will discuss particularly the academic job satisfaction as an amplifier of the organizational intellectual capital within the Portuguese higher education institutions. The research is being carried out at the Center for Research on Higher Education Policies (CIPES) and is being financed by Foundation for Science and Technology. The main research objectives are as follows: RO1: Determine the dimensions associated with job satisfaction of the academic staff; RO2: Analyze how job satisfaction differs among sub-groups of academics – sex, degree of education and institutional type. The main conclusions are that academics are in general satisfied with their jobs but not very or extremely satisfied. Academics more dissatisfied were those with a higher degree of education (PhD) and those teaching in public higher education institutions, especially those in public universities. Academics are more satisfied with “Non academic staff (administrative staff, technical and laboratorial staff)”, “Teaching Climate” and “Colleagues” and express dissatisfaction with “Research Climate” and “Conditions of Employment”. The results are intended as an aid in identifying areas for improvement and, consequently, this data can be used to shape policies and change, promoting the organizational intellectual capital. Key words: academics, job satisfaction, intellectual capital, higher education.

Abstract: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the screening test Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS) for the Portuguese language of Brazil was carried out in this article. The adaptations were developed based on authors' guidelines and specific literature: translation; synthesis; back-translation and cross-cultural adaptation (technical review and semantic equivalence). The tests were adapted with the aid of a pilot group of 46 healthy individuals, mean age 52.6 ± 13.88 years and 13.8 ± 5.10 years of studies, 26 females and 20 males, randomly recruited among the caregivers of the patients of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Goiás, Brazil. After translation of all fifteen ECAS subtests, nine were adapted and six not gone through cross-cultural adaptation. In the Language-Naming subtest the fox figure (13.04% of errors) was replaced by the image of the alligator; 5 words (41.66%) of the Language-Spelling subtest were replaced. In the Executive-Alternation subtest, 11-K or 11-L was accepted as a response, provided the subsequent sequence was correct. A Verbal Fluency Index (IFV) table was established, with data from the pilot group, which will be the reference for the Brazilian version. The three subtests for memory evaluation (Immediate Recall, Delayed Recall and Delayed Recognition) are based on a story that has been adapted to Brazilian culture. The protocol has been translated and adapted to Brazilian Portuguese and has undergone processes of content, verbal comprehension and semantic equivalence, being called Edimburgo - Rastreio Cognitivo-Comportamental em ELA (ECAS-BR). It is necessary to continue this study for external validity, equivalence of measurement and reproducibility.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the functioning of the main Spanish and Portuguese containers ports to observe if they are operating below their production capabilities. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the above-mentioned objective, one possible method is to calculate the data envelopment analysis (DEA) efficiency, and the scale efficiency (SE) of targets, and in order to consider the variability across different samples, a bootstrap scheme has been applied. Findings The results showed that the DEA bootstrap-based approach can not only select a suitable unit which accords with a port’s actual input capabilities, but also provides a more accurate result. The bootstrapped results indicate that all ports do not need to develop future investments to expand port infrastructure. Practical implications The proposed DEA bootstrap-based approach provides useful implications in the robust measurement of port efficiency considering different samples. The study proves the usefulness of this approach as a decision-making tool in port efficiency. Originality/value This study is one of the first studies to apply bootstrap to measure port efficiency under the background of the Spain and Portugal case. In the first stage, two models of DEA have been used to obtain the pure technical, and the technical and SE, and both the input-oriented options: constant return scale and variable return scale. In the second stage, the bootstrap method has been applied in order to determine efficiency rankings of Iberian Peninsula container ports taking into consideration different samples. Confidence interval estimates of efficiency for each port are reported. This paper provides useful insights into the application of a DEA bootstrap-based approach as a modeling tool to aid decision making in measuring port efficiency.

Abstract:
IntroductionProstate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers among men. However, screening for prostate cancer carries many risks and a small benefit. Thus, based on the available evidence, most medical organisations advocate a shared decision-making process, in which decision aids may play an important role. Nevertheless, to date there is no such instrument to be used by Portuguese men. Our goal is to translate and perform the cultural adaptation of an English language prostate cancer screening decision aid called ‘Making the best choice’, in web and printed formats, which has been developed and tested by a workgroup from Georgetown University (USA).Methods and analysisCulturally and technically inappropriate recommendations in the original decision aid will be reviewed by the process coordinator and a linguistic expert. Two forward translations from English to Portuguese will be done, followed by a back-translation and an independent expert review. We will further improve the decision aid through an iterative process of data collection, data analysis and decision aid review. Individual semistructured cognitive interviews will be conducted and audiotaped with 55–69-year-old men recruited from the local community (urban and suburban) of Oporto district. We plan a total sample size of 30 participants (15 interviews per format). All participants will receive written information about the study and will sign individual consent forms. After verbatim transcription of the audiofiles, a thematic categorical analysis will be conducted using Ligre Software.Ethics and disseminationThe study protocol was approved by the Health Ethics Committee from Centro Hospitalar de São João/Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto. Results from this study will be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and the Portuguese decision aid will available to Portuguese men.

Abstract:
Aim The aim of this study was to identify and categorise the nursing practices of Portuguese nurses in the context of primary healthcare services. Methods A scoping review was undertaken using the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences literature database; Spanish Bibliographic Index of Health Sciences; Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online; Cochrane Library; Scientific Electronic Library Online; El Banco de Datos de Enfermería nursing database; and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature databases. The search strategy included articles of original research, which involved nurses or nursing practices in the context of Portugal’s primary healthcare, published in Portuguese, Spanish and/or English. The review involved the analysis of 11 studies published in Latin American, Brazilian and Portuguese journals, therefore all were available in Portuguese, published between 2007 and 2013. Results From the analysis it was possible to establish four categories of primary healthcare nurses’ work: technical procedures, health promotion, independent actions, and management and training practices. Conclusions Primary healthcare nursing in Portugal is challenged in the context of making more effective use of its own competences, investing more in actions of health promotion and disease prevention and less in technical curative procedures, thus contributing to better performance in the Portuguese National Health System.

Abstract Oliveira, M. M., Camanho, A. S., and Gaspar, M. B. 2010. Technical and economic efficiency analysis of the Portuguese artisanal dredge fleet. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 1811–1821. An efficiency analysis of the commercial dredge fleet operating along the south coast of Portugal between 2005 and 2007 sought to determine the efficiency of the vessels using data envelopment analysis models, considering fixed inputs (vessel power, length, tonnage, and an indicator of stock biomass) and a variable input (number of days at sea). The annual quota per vessel was also included in the model as a contextual factor. In the technical-efficiency (TE) analysis, outputs were defined by the catch weight for each of the three target species (bivalves). Using price data for each species in the wholesale market, revenue efficiency was also estimated to complement the TE analysis. The advantage of the approach lies in the ability to separate technical aspects from allocative aspects in the efficiency assessment, allowing two-dimensional graphic representation of vessel performance. The procedure allows the identification of benchmark vessels, which maximized the catch weight of the species landed, given their inputs, as well as the vessels that selected the appropriate target species to maximize the revenue of the fishing activity, given output prices. The approach also allowed the specification of targets for inefficient vessels that correspond to the catch by species, permitting revenue maximization from fishing.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine the influence of different small-sided games (SSGs) format on external, internal load and technical actions of professional U-23 portuguese soccer players. Eight players (20.1±0.8 years, 180.4±7.2 cm, 75.9±4.9 kg) performed three different 4 vs. 4 ball possession SSGs (3x3 min play/rest) in different pitch dimensions, SSG1 16x24 m, SSG2 20x30 m and SSG3 24x36 m. All SSGs were video recorded for technical actions analysis. WIMU PROTM (RealTrack Systems, Almeria, Spain) inertial devices were used for internal and external load data collection. The distribution normality was determined with the Shapiro-Wilk test. Parametric and nonparametric statistics were selected accordingly. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS™ 25.0 version) was used for data analysis. No significant differences were observed comparing the different SSGs in total distance covered, acceleration/deceleration distance, as well as in maximal and mean heart rate. Regarding the technical actions, no significant differences were observed in successful passes, contrary to the observed from SSG1 to SSG3 in duels (7.00±2.13; 4.38±2.44; 4.25±1.98), number of balls lost (2.63±1.30; 1.00±0.53; 0.88±1.12) and in between SSGs in high-speed running (p<0.05, ES=0.37). In senior and professional soccer players, the modification of the pitch size between 16x24 m and 24x36 m during 4 vs. 4 ball possession SSGs with 3x3 min play/rest promotes modifications in the dynamic of technical actions and internal and external training load variables Keywords: Small-sided games, Professional soccer, Technical actions, External and internal load, Performance.

Abstract:
The portuguese term “Aljamía” means ʻtexts in Portuguese in Arabic scriptʼ since the beginning of the XXth century under the influence of D. Lopes. The word “Aljamía” appears in Portuguese documents of the XVth century to designate the Portuguese language as it was perceived by the Moors. Thus, the word “aljamía” has two meanings: the historical ʻforeign languageʼ (Portuguese) and the modern ʻtext in Portuguese in Arabic scriptʼ. These meanings correspond to the Spanish “Aljamía” and “Aljamiado”. However, not all scientists agree with the terminological use of the word “Aljamía” as an analogue of the Spanish “Aljamiado”. The term “Aljamía” technically means portuguese texts in Arabic script, but it has other cultural and historical references. Spanish texts in “Aljamiado” were created by Spanish Muslims who lost their knowledge of Arabic in the period after the Reconquista (XIII–XVII). The Arabic script was a sign of their cultural and religious identity. The reason for the use of Arabic alphabet in Portuguese documents (XVIth century) is different. The Arab governors of the portuguese colonies in Africa had to address their reports directly to the Portuguese king. They knew Portuguese only in spoken form and used the Arabic alphabet to write down the Portuguese language. These documents are an important source in the history of the Portuguese language, especially in historical phonetics. However, from a cultural and historical point of view, they are not comparable with Spanish and cannot belong to the corpus of manuscripts in “Aljamiado”.

Abstract:
The present paper discusses document translation and analyzes the translation from Portuguese to Spanish of a report of the Council of Portugal, which describes the political-administrative situation of the Moluccas Islands. The concepts of bilingualism and diglossia (FISHMAN, 1967) are used to discuss the colonial translation scenario, and the taxonomic framework provided by Barbosa (2004) supports the translation analysis. The main research tools are the selection and editing of manuscripts, and the classification of translation procedures. Results indicate the historical study of document translation between Portuguese and Spanish as a new research field, mainly involving contact between languages; the tendency towards literality as the main feature of Iberian Union (1580-1640) administrative translation, as these are technical documents; punctual translator interference, with instances of source-text omission and rewriting; and the possible comparison between document translation in Asian and American Portuguese colonies.

Abstract:
Person-centered care aims to increase and guarantee the quality of care at residential care facilities for older adults. The implementation and development of this approach requires validated assessment tools, which are still lacking in Portugal. This study aims to adapt and validate for the Portuguese population the internationally and widely used essential instrument that is the Staff Assessment Person-Directed Care (SAPDC). The adaptation of the SAPDC included its translation, back translation, and a pilot-study. For validation, staff members were recruited by distributing the study via email and on social media. Respondents included 546 native Portuguese-speaking staff members working at residential care facilities for over 6 months. The mean score of SAPDC was 165.74 (SD = 36.78). The exploratory factor analysis showed eight conceptually distinct dimensions, considered adequate by the expert team. The total scale showed a very good internal consistency (α = .96) and excellent temporal stability assessed by Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (> .90). Providing a Portuguese version of the SAPDC is useful to substantiate technical and scientific advancements and define policies with implications on evolving care approaches. This tool helps optimize the quality and dignification of gerontological practices, which is urgent at Portuguese residential care facilities.

Abstract:
The present study investigates the relationship between knowledge sharing (knowledge donation and knowledge collection dimensions) with organizational innovation (Administrative and technological innovation forms) in Brazilian and Portuguese organizations. The hypotheses were tested using the partial least squares (PLS) approach. Knowledge donation was shown to be positively related with administrative innovation among Portuguese companies, but not among Brazilian companies. Knowledge donation was shown to be positively related with technical innovation among both Brazilian and Portuguese companies. Knowledge collection was shown to have no relationship with either of the two types of innovation in the two investigated countries. As a practical implication, companies that work in multiple locations need to customize their sharing processes considering differences in national culture. Other studies have made use of the two-dimensional concept of knowledge sharing, but view its relationship with a one-dimensional construct of innovation and without comparing contexts.

Abstract:
Youth soccer performance is multifaceted, includes physical growth, biological maturation, and physical fitness, and is linked to the sporting environment to which the players are exposed. We aim to describe age-related associations in body physique, body composition, physical performance technical and tactical skills, psychological and club characteristics of male soccer players aged 12 to 14 years. A total of 157 male soccer players clustered into three age-cohorts (12, 13 and 14 years) were recruited from six soccer clubs. Anthropometric, body composition and body physique, biological maturation, physical performance, skill/game proficiency data, psychological characteristics, and clubs’ characteristics were collected. Group means were compared using analysis of variance and covariance. Fourteen years old players were significantly taller, heavier, leaner, faster, stronger, and technically more skilled than their younger peers (p < 0.05). Differences in physical performance and technical skills (p < 0.05) were found between age groups when adjusting for confounders of soccer training and biological maturation. No significant differences (p > 0.05) between age groups were found in psychological domains. Our findings suggest that age, biological maturation, and training volume are key factors influencing young soccer players’ performance and development. Further, clubs’ conditions provide players with ample resources for their success in training and competition.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Managerial Behaviour Instrument, Portuguese ver-sion, for the Brazilian sport federations. The sample was composed of 263 members of federations, including managerial (39.5%), technical (35.1%), executive (20.6%) bodies and others (4.9%). The study used descriptive, reliability and confirm-atory factor analyses. Values of internal consistency for the sub-factors ranged from 0.83 to 0.92, correlation between 0.37 and 0.79, and adequate values for six indices (χ2, χ2/df, CFI, NNFI, SRMR, RMSEA) of the global adjustment of the meas-urement model. Thus, the Portuguese version of the Managerial Behaviour Instrument has acceptable values for its psycho-metric properties that allow researchers to use it to study leadership competencies of sports managers.

Abstract:
This paper presents the role of FabLabs in the Portuguese footwear and metal industrial sectors, regarding the use of new and disruptive technologies and processes at industrial scale, aiming for the digitalization of the industry. MetalShoe FabLab Network is a project intending to provide a physical space and, at the same time, offering knowledge for experimentation, demonstration, validation, and human resources training regarding digital manufacturing technologies, with focus in the industrial implementation. For that, a survey was conducted among industrials from both sectors to understand the needs and expectations regarding these types of technologies. Digitalization, automation and robotics, additive manufacturing and digital marketing were the ones selected as the technologies not yet integrated and that would bring value to the companies, while the companies want to learn more about digitalization, additive manufacturing & 3D Printing and IoT, these being similarly chosen, and automation and robotics following closely behind. In this sense, the outputs of the projects were technical referential about each technology, guides for applications of the technologies, workshops, technical sessions and demonstration actions. In the end, it is expected that Portuguese companies from both sectors would recognize the potential of digital manufacturing technologies and incorporate those that provide the most value to each entity.

Abstract:
In an attempt to establish a possible ‘norm’ for the distribution of translation modalities in English → Portuguese translational relationship, a varied sample of three different text typologies (legal, technical, and corporate) with six representative texts of each typology was compared, producing a total of 9,000 lexical items. By applying Vinay & Darbelnet’s and Aubert’s models, it was possible to obtain a basic pattern of the distribution of the most used translation modalities as well as to verify certain variables, such as the correlation between a higher or lower fluctuation in the frequency of the modalities and different types of texts. From three different levels of data analysis, we observed a translation hierarchy in relation to the three most frequent categories: literal translation, transposition and modulation and also that legal texts on the one hand, and technical and corporate texts on the other, seemed to organise themselves into two major groups. We also obtained some elements which would enable us to sketch a correlation between the modalities of literal translation and technical and corporate texts, as well as a correlation between the modalities of modulation and transposition with modulation and legal texts.

Abstract:
Background: Warm-up before competition and training is a strategy that is widely acknowledged to improve players’ physical condition and performance. However, the importance of warm-up is not well understood and so there is a research gap into this topic. Objective: This study aimed to characterize the warm-up of professional soccer players by differences and similarities between different coaches’ methodologies. Methods: A group of thirty-two Portuguese elite soccer coaches participated in this study An observational study design was conducted through a cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire with nineteen questions. During the questionnaire, coaches were asked to provide specific information about the warm-ups prescribed for soccer players, about their importance from a technical, physical and psychological point of view and the importance they attached to the warm-up / reheating of substitute players. The questionnaire was administered to the coaches at the end of a training session. Results: The results indicated that there is no consensus regarding the type of warm-up that should be prescribed. There are different opinions between elite coaches regarding the warm-up components that must be emphasized in order to prepare players for the game demands. Moreover, considering the tactical, technical, physical, and psychological dimensions, the coaches have different perspectives of the warm-up. Conclusion: This study allowed to conclude that there is no standard regarding the prescription of warm-up in professional soccer players, in the opinion of coaches. This is mainly due to the fact that there is a distinct appreciation in relation to the importance and influence of warm-up for performance.

Abstract:
The granite sludge (GS) produced during block sawing can be exploited as alternative raw material in ceramic and concrete industries. Based on the case study of a Portuguese granite processing plant, this work analysed, by experimental tests and Environmental and Cost Life Cycle analyses, the feasibility of GS valorisation as a substitute (i) for feldspar in a ceramic paste and (ii) fine–medium inert filler in structural concrete. The results demonstrated that both the valorisation pathways are more advantageous than GS landfilling. Due to granulometric, mineralogical composition and shrinkage, GS can substitute feldspar in sandstone tiles or tableware products, although its tinting effect can limit noble whitish ceramic applications. In structural concrete mixes, 5% w/w GS instead of fine inert filler reduces the compressive strength and increases the water:cement ratio. The GS generates lower environmental impacts as a substitute for inert filler than as a substitute for feldspar in most of the impact categories analysed, even though the latter valorisation pathway provides higher benefits in Climate Change and the Depletion of Fossil resources, Water, and Ozone. If no monetary value is recognised for GS valorisation by the market, the sustainability of GS life cycle cost decreases when compared to its landfilling.

Abstract:
When Portugal began building railways in its mainland territory in the 1850s, the main goal was to connect its harbours (mainly Lisbon) to the border with Spain (and beyond to Central Europe). This strategy left out of the network vast areas of the nation, some of which were perceived as very rugged, poor, and with low economic potential, where the construction of a railway was not cost effective. The same quandaries existed in the colonies, where investment in public works started in the 1870s. To bring railroads to these regions, it was necessary to find a low-cost technical solution. That solution was narrow-gauge railroads. In this paper, we analyse how this technology was transferred from Central Europe to Portugal and its colonies via a travel circuit of learning by Portuguese engineers and how it was developed through a mixture of Portuguese and foreign expertise.

Abstract:
Abstract The term “mixed fisheries” refers to fishing activities where more than one species are caught simultaneously and one species may be fished by different gears. Therefore, mixed fisheries present a harder challenge for fisheries management than single-species fisheries and the uncertainty can start at the definition of the target species. In these particular fisheries, we have a large group of species that are caught, being target or not, species with large landing values that are actually not target, and species with a high economic value that can fall in the bycatch category. Although the dynamics of such fisheries is poorly understood, they are known to have a relevant contribution to Portuguese fishers' revenue. The present demand on sustainable fishing activities to ensure marine ecosystem preservation has led towards an ecosystem approach where effort is being made to take into account biological and technical interactions on management measures and advice. In this work, logbooks data of the Portuguese multi-gear fleet were used to identify different fisheries based on catch composition and gears through cluster analysis (CLARA). Two identified fisheries were used to explore the impact of these fishing activities on the ecosystem scale. This approach was achieved by a productivity and susceptibility analysis and through foodweb analysis. The relation between species vulnerability and their functional role in the ecosystem were highlighted. Technical interactions among fishing gears, and species biological interactions, were explored within and among fisheries. We found and illustrated that these interactions go beyond the fleets and fisheries considered in the present work. This approach allows us to identify key elements that can, ultimately, be relevant to an ecosystem-based approach towards mixed fisheries management.

Abstract:
The characteristics of the Portuguese agro-industrial sector limit the adoption and promotion of innovation. A business-sector characterisation was carried out to identify needs and business behaviour. Capacity, in terms of skills and knowledge, motivation and opportunities, is the main factor in innovation and sustainability adoption and the alteration of the behaviours of people or organisations. Collaborative business practices to enhance networking and knowledge sharing and the diversity of skills and competencies, along with several pedagogical methods, within innovation and sustainability training, were outlined. Throughout a benchmarking methodology that analysed various courses and pedagogies in this type of training, it was possible to incorporate reflexive practices and action-oriented training to engage in transformative actions and the work community’s capacity-building creation. Thus, a model was designed to be able to promote the capacity for innovation and sustainability in the Portuguese agro-industrial sector, with training activities targeting its specific characteristics. It is focused on problem solving, technical exercise, and task performance, aligned with the multidisciplinary perspective needed to achieve a vision based on systemic, critical, and reflective thinking and able to answer the future market demand. Therefore, it will be possible for the Portuguese agro-industrial SMEs to establish partnerships and networks that will induce the incorporation of innovation and sustainable practices.

Abstract:
This study assessed attitudes toward patient-centred care, empathy, assertiveness, and subjective perception of communication skills and technical knowledge among Portuguese undergraduate students in healthcare. These students may develop rehabilitation activities with patients in their person-oriented or technique-oriented professions. Portuguese nursing and allied health students from two public higher education schools completed questionnaires in the first and third academic years: Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale, Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, Scale for Interpersonal Behaviour, and a subjective perception of technical knowledge and communication skills. A total of 183 students completed the surveys. In the first year, students showed moderate to high scores on patient-centredness attitudes, empathy, and assertiveness and perceived themselves as having good communication skills. Students from person-oriented programmes significantly improved their Total and shared patient-centred attitudes in the third year compared with students attending technique-oriented professions. Significant differences in empathy were found between groups in the third year. Distress associated with assertive behaviours increased significantly across time in students from technique-oriented programmes compared with their peers in person-oriented programmes. The results suggest that the health profession’s orientation and the programmes’ specific curriculum might have a role in how some dimensions evolved in the two groups of students. The increasing assertiveness-related discomfort highlighted the importance of assessing and monitoring students’ emotional wellbeing during their initial interactions with patients.

Abstract:
Abstract In Portugal, family doctors work with a well-defined list of patients to whom they provide healthcare throughout their lives. Several studies showed that larger list sizes are associa- ted with poorer health outcomes and compromise the quality of care. A significant increase in the average list size has been observed in recent years due to the Portuguese unfavorable socioeconomic context and the lack of family doctors. In 2017, the Portuguese Association of General and Fa- mily Medicine (APMGF) developed technical and scientific research that ultimately typified a set of different clinical practice contexts. It considers the geographic and socioeconomic characteristics and a set of population-based indicators, adjusting the list size according to the population’s specific needs. Such adjustments ensure health care services with better quality, safety, efficacy, and personalized to their features. In this paper, a brief review is made on this topic, focusing on the work developed by APMGF and its main results.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the legal regime of institutional cooperation in anti-corruption. To this end, a clipping of the theme is carried out, addressing the genres of leniency agreements and the proposal for a Technical Cooperation Agreement (TCA, in Portuguese the acronym: ACT) signed by representatives of various institutions responsible for internal and external control, together with the Federal Supreme Court (FSC, in Portuguese the acronym: STF). The first part of this work presents the history of the legal institute in the national system and its different genres. Then, it addresses the TCA and the importance of cooperation between government institutions aiming at legal certainty and the strengthening of the institute. To this end, the work adopts the hermeneutic-dialectical method, and the exploratory research employs secondary data analysis, such as bibliographic and documentary research. It is concluded that the existence of a system that favors cooperation is important, with the preservation of the legal-functional criterion of each institution in the celebration of leniency agreements to guarantee the legal security of relations.

Translation goes through other fields and goes beyond the textual level. The activity of translating brings aspects that permeate cognitive, social, and cultural aspects. In this article, we apply sociology to Translation Studies by adopting a Bourdieu-based approach to show the structure and the interactions among social agents in the field of translation and in the fields where technical-specialized translators find themselves when developing a translation project. From a practical experience of a professional translator with the translation of a web-based educational platform into Portuguese, we show how important it is for translators to be aware of the structure, norms, and interactions in that specific field so they can draw up their strategies and choices to succeed in their search for recognition and symbolic capital. First, we review key concepts of Bourdieu’s theory of practice and then we advance in the discussion about the dynamics among the agents engaged in the translation project and language implications from a sociological perspective.

Abstract This article traces the emergence and institutionalization of plantation systems and cash crops in East Timor over two centuries. It examines the continuities, ruptures and shifting politics across successive plantation styles and political regimes, from Portuguese colonialism through Indonesian occupation to post-colonial independence. In following plantation agriculture from its origins to the present, the article explores how plantation subjects have been formed successively through racial discourse, repressive discipline, technical authority and neoliberal market policies. We argue that plantation politics have been instrumental in reproducing the class distinctions that remain evident in East Timor today.

Background: The consumption of meals at resturants has increased mass catering establishments. Such food services may present several risk factors for foodborne diseases, which have a substantial negative impact on public health. The smallest business with no technical or financial support struggles to comply with food safety European Regulation. The aim of this four years study was to assess Good Manufacture Practices (GMP) in Portuguese restaurants applying a designed food safety methodology, FoodSimplex, through audit data to determine good manufacture practices, and microbiological sampling of the meals before and after its implementation, by food groups according to their risk. Methods: FoodSimplex is a combination of four stages methodology, based on Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), combined with technical-functional and food safety audits, with pretested checklist, training and microbial analysis (Mesophylic bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli, Coagulase-positive staphylococci and Salmonella spp) of the meals served. Results: Results of the food safety audit for GMP parameters showed a general improvement with 80% compliance with the checklist subitems. The ready-to-eat food samples presented, regarding the total mesophilic aerobes count, a statistical significant change to acceptable and satisfactory condition (p-value= 0.029). 100% compliance, with acceptable and satisfactory results was observed for Listeria monocytogenes (p-value= 0.180) and for E. coli, coagulase-positive Staphylococci and Salmonella spp., all the food samples presented satisfactory results in the study (100%). Conclusion: At the end of the investigation period, a decrease in bacterial populations in food samples was observed with an improvement of the GMP audit data which indicated that the FoodSimplex methodology improved the food safety status of these establishments.

Assessing the Importance Given by Basketball Coaches to Training ContentsThe purpose of this study was to compare the importance given by novice, intermediate and experienced basketball coaches to training contents. To achieve this purpose, a sample composed of Portuguese basketball coaches (n = 212) described how they rate the importance of technical, tactical, physical and drill contents. According to the results, there is a wide-ranging differential from novice to experienced coaches. First, while experienced coaches tend to focus on tactical development, novice and intermediate coaches seem to privilege the improvement of technical skills. Second, whereas significant differences between novice and intermediate coaches were found, evidence confirmed that they were higher (both in number and weight) when comparing experienced coaches against novice and intermediate. The study provided strong support to justify the necessity to adjust coaches' knowledge to players' biological developmental, and could form the basis of focused interventions in coaching development.

Abstract:
An innovative safety administration paradigm, resilience engineering (RSE), is becoming more popular in today's sociotechnical organizations. It is thought that the properties of complicated social and technical structures better align with RSE. Especially when it comes to measuring and modeling, RSE is much more difficult due to its various criteria character and the inclusion of both qualitative and quantitative latent components. Using the extant neutrosophic TODIM (Portuguese of interactive and multi-criteria decision-making) approach, this study seeks to create a neutrosophic mixed multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework for assessing and evaluating resilience. Several indicators of resilience were defined as part of the first assessment methodology. After that, the neutrosophic TODIM technique was used to assign relative importance to the various resilience indicators and to rate the effectiveness of the various operational units. As an illustration of the model's efficacy, we conducted a risk assessment of a gas refinery, a prototypical sociotechnical structure.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper discusses the historical construction of the Expanded Family Health Center (NASF, in Portuguese), based on the analysis of 17 documents edited by the Ministry of Health (MH) between 2005 and 2021. This is a qualitative study of documental review that seeks to understand how the regulations and official instructive manuals have been shaping the way NASF teams operate. It proposes to divide the NASF construction process into five periods: previous movements (2003 to 2007); support guidelines (2008 to 2011); the universalization of nasf (2012 to 2015); expansion of support (2016 to 2018); and the dismantling of NASF? (2019 to 2021). The results show changes in guidelines over the years of the team’s existence, especially in relation to the matrix support concept and its two dimensions: technical-pedagogical and clinical care. This study also demonstrates the effects of the Previne Brasil Program on the NASF, which resulted in the reduction of 379 teams in 2020 and 2021. Added to this scenario is the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which may be repositioning NASF interventions in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS, in Portuguese).

Abstract:
In the last few decades, the agricultural extension services in Mozambique have been focused mainly on the training and strengthening of producer associations, improved technology transfer, and technical assistance. This study aimed to establish the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the producers which impact the access to agricultural extension services. In methodological terms, a logistic regression model was estimated and the variables used were provided by 2010 Agricultural and Livestock Census, also known as CAP- (Portuguese acronym for Censo Agropecuário de 2010). Results showed that despite the universal character of the agricultural extension policy, the distribution of access to these services was very uneven, in terms of variables such as gender and age of the household head, education levels, ability to read, and technology use (irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides). This information is highly relevant to decision-making, as it can guide future improvements in the services, both in terms of coverage and of quality of the technical assistance.

Abstract:
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Refractive error is a public health concern and even with relatively simple and cost-effective interventions it remains usually outside national health services (NHSs) not ensuring universal health coverage. This study aimed to generate evidence about the availability and accessibility of refractive services in Portugal and to present a plan for more efficient services. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A situation analysis of the Portuguese existing refractive services within the NHS was conducted based on three health systems building blocks: service delivery access, service coverage, and workforce. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis was performed based on existent evidence to identify internal and external factors that can facilitate or hinder the integration of refractive services within the NHS. The number of eye care personnel to be integrated in the NHS was calculated considering the minimum ratios recommended by national and international technical reports. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Portugal has no specific services to address refractive errors within the NHS. Treatment of refractive error occurs at the level of eye care general services. There are 39 NHS eye care services, all hospital-centred and divided into three large groups, according to technical differentiation, the technology required, and workforce capacity. The workforce available is composed of ophthalmologists and orthoptists, together with nurses and other general paramedical assistants. 3 Portuguese municipalities have more than 1 NHS eye care service, 35 have 1 NHS eye care service, and 240 municipalities (in the mainland) have none. In 2021, 52% of the hospitals providing eye care services did not meet the recommended response times. Centralization of eye care services in urban areas, undifferentiated referral systems, and a shortage in the workforce per inhabitant was observed. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> Portuguese NHS has all the requirements to reorientate refractive care from the current hospital-based model to primary care. The country also has a trained and qualified workforce to address this condition. Evidence demonstrates that the provision of refractive services at primary care is efficient and effective and translates into an opportunity to identify other visual conditions.

Abstract:
Residential care facilities (RCF) for older people are facing high demands due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to explore the workers’ perspectives on the changes in work and care dynamics amidst the first wave of the pandemic at Portuguese RCF. This is a descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional study. An online questionnaire about pandemic-induced changes in work and care dynamics was sent to 2325 RCF. These entities were then asked to share it with their workers. The participants (n = 784) were mostly women (92.7%) and mostly composed of technical directors (41.6%) and direct-care workers (17.1%). The respondents reported that during the first wave of the pandemic, when compared to the pre-pandemic period, there were greater difficulties in providing care related to the basic necessities of older people (52.7%); direct-care workers were required to work more consecutive hours in each shift (69.95%); direct-care workers had to live at RCF (14.8%), and there were changes concerning the possibility of promoting person-centered care (PCC) practices. It also revealed that focusing on disease prevention and sanitary measures alone facilitates practices that reinforce the traditional model of procedure-centered care and have negative consequences on the rights and well-being of those living and working at RCF, exposing and accentuating preexisting vulnerabilities. This study considers the pandemic’s serious implications and alarming questions about basic care, dignity, living, and working conditions at Portuguese RCF. These notions reinforce the need for change through redefining care policies and practices in Portuguese RCF beyond the pandemic. The current situation provides an opportunity to adopt a formal PCC model.

Abstract:
The history of two roads projected and built for cars during the first phase of the Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal (1933–1945) is reconstructed in the context of similar developments in interwar Europe, showing the particularities of a peripheral European country. It shows the importance of automobile infrastructure to this dictatorial regime, the political uses of this technological sublime, and the controversies triggered by the exceptionality and arbitrariness with which this road plan was carried out. The Lisbon–Cascais coastal road and the Lisbon–National Stadium motorway stretch were two small roads compared with the national network, for which the State concentrated substantial economic and technical resources because of political reasons, but also due to concerns about urban development and tourism. Their construction entailed the development of national engineering and the promotion of future car use.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of match location, quality of opposition and match outcome on match running performance according to playing position in a Portuguese professional football team. Twenty-three male professional football players were monitored from eighteen Portuguese Football League matches during the 2019–2020 season. Global positioning system technology (GPS) was used to collect time-motion data. The match running performance was obtained from five playing positions: central defenders (CD), fullbacks (FB), central midfielders (CM), wide midfielders (WM) and forwards (FW). Match running performance was analyzed within specific position and contextual factors using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures, standardized (Cohen) differences and smallest worthwhile change. CM and WM players covered significantly greater total distance (F = 15.45, p = 0.000, η2 = 0.334) and average speed (F = 12.79, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.294). WM and FB players covered higher distances at high-speed running (F = 16.93, p = 0.000, η2 = 0.355) and sprinting (F = 13.49; p < 0.001, η2 = 0.305). WM players covered the highest number of accelerations (F = 4.69, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.132) and decelerations (F = 12.21, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.284). The match running performance was influenced by match location (d = 0.06–2.04; CI: −0.42–2.31; SWC = 0.01–1.10), quality of opposition (d = 0.13–2.14; CI: –0.02–2.60; SWC = 0.01–1.55) and match outcome (d = 0.01–2.49; CI: −0.01–2.31; SWC = 0.01–0.35). Contextual factors influenced the match running performance with differential effects between playing positions. This study provides the first report about the contextual influence on match running performance in a Portuguese professional football team. Future research should also integrate tactical and technical key indicators when analyzing the match-related contextual influence on match running performance.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to reflect on some of the current trends in Portuguese illustration for children, focusing on an intertextual reading of the picturebooks written and illustrated by Manuela Bacelar, as a precursor in the creation of this kind of book in Portugal. Based on the discursive interdependence of text and illustrations, stylistic and technical-narrative procedures are observed, in necessary articulation with the visual/graphic and material/peritextual aspects. The potential of these aspects is highlighted in the composition of the work and in the construction of its multiple semiosis. The interdependence of text and illustrations poses specific requirements in the process of reading and has an impact on the formation of competent and autonomous readers. Relying on modern literary currents to be found in a postmodernist aesthetic, this paper examines the corpus, from both a technical and compositional point of view, seeking to investigate some of the traits and formal rhetorical, stylistic and thematic resources that distinguish the work of this awarded artist.

Abstract:
Hydrogen is regarded as a flexible energy carrier with multiple applications across several sectors. For instance, it can be used in industrial processes, transports, heating, and electrical power generation. Green hydrogen, produced from renewable sources, can have a crucial role in the pathway towards global decarbonization. However, the success of green hydrogen production ultimately depends on its economic sustainability. In this context, this work evaluates the economic performance of a hydrogen power plant participating in the electricity market and supplying multiple hydrogen consumers. The analysis includes technical and economical details of the main components of the hydrogen power plant. Its operation is simulated using six different scenarios, which admit the production of either grey or green hydrogen. The scenarios used for the analysis include data from the Iberian electricity market for the Portuguese hub. An important conclusion is that the combination of multiple services in a hydrogen power plant has a positive effect on its economic performance. However, as of today, consumers who would wish to acquire green hydrogen would have to be willing to pay higher prices to compensate for the shorter periods of operation of hydrogen power plants and for their intrinsic losses. Nonetheless, an increase in green hydrogen demand based on a greater environmental awareness can lead to the need to not only build more of these facilities, but also to integrate more services into them. This could promote the investment in hydrogen-related technologies and result in changes in capital and operating costs of key components of these plants, which are necessary to bring down production costs.

Abstract:
Purpose – The text addresses the problem of planned obsolescence from the point of view of consumer protection, based on the decisions of Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato which condemned Samsung and Apple on the grounds of the prohibition of unfair commercial practices. It aims to consider the scope of the applicable similar norms in Portuguese and Brazilian legal systems. Methodology – Analysis of the grounds relied on those decisions, as well as the relevant doctrine regarding planned obsolescence and consumer protection from a comparative law perspective. Findings – The text demonstrates which norms can ensure consumer protection in the case of technical or functional planned obsolescence, especially considering the communication dimension, which focuses on the right to information.

Abstract:
This paper addresses two aspects of the Língua Geral Amazônica (LGA). First, we propose that Língua Geral as a technical term in Portuguese was inspired by administrative practices in Spain’s American colonies and that, given contemporary usage, the term should be understood functionally as any Tupi-Guarani variety broadly mutually comprehensible with the colonial Old Tupi, rather than as a structurally modified variety or the speech of a particular ethnic or social group, as has been claimed. We then briefly analyse two recent hypotheses that treat the emergence of LGA as creolisation (VIEIRA; ZANOLI; MÓDOLO, 2019; NOBRE, 2019). Next, we apply key notions of the Language Ecology creolisation model (MUFWENE, 2003, 2008) to the formation of LGA and suggest a periodization.
