Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to compare sorting and ranking methods for prioritization of rehabilitation interventions of sewers, taking into account risk, performance and cost. For that purpose multiple criteria decision-aid (MCDA) methods such as ELECTRE TRI for sorting and ELECTRE III for ranking are applied in a real case-study and the results obtained are compared. The case study is a small sanitary sewer system from a Portuguese utility located in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. The problem to investigate is the prioritization of the sewer candidates for rehabilitation. The decision maker (a panel group of specialists) has chosen five assessment measures: water level and maximum flow velocity (hydraulic performance indices), sewer importance and failure repair cost (collapse-related consequences of failure) and the risk of collapse. The results show that the outcomes from ELECTRE III are easier to understand than those from ELECTRE TRI method. Two different sets of weights were used, and the sorting and ranking results from both methods were found to be sensitive to them. ELECTRE TRI method is not straightforward as it involves technical parameters that are difficult to define, such as reference profiles and cut levels.

Abstract:
Forensic sciences aggregate a series of scientific and technological domains that aid the judiciary and judicial system. Despite the highly specialized and qualified professionals taking a role in forensic practice, this paradigmatic integration of law, science, and technology often leads them to face significant ethical challenges. Indeed, forensic sciences hold a unique position due to the social and legal implications inherent to forensic expertise. The potential interference with personal rights and freedoms requires the professional practice of the forensic specialist to be guided by alignment with scientific-technical competence under the seal of the highest ethical principles. However, the absence of a specific statutory regulation blurs the performance of the forensic professional and may harm the professional credibility but also the scientific domain as a whole. The existence of ethical pillars is essential to support professional practice, following international recommendations in this regard. Herein, we propose a framework for a code of ethics and conduct that is based on the professional particularities characterizing the forensic practice but also considers the ethical issues that are mandatory to ensure high levels of reliability and credibility of forensic specialists.

Abstract:
In this paper data will be provided from an ongoing study on academic satisfaction in Portuguese higher education. The realization of this study is providing a diverse range of information on multiple dimensions of the faculty job in higher education, in particular dimensions of satisfaction, as well as dimensions of the academic career and the professional context in which it is exercised. In the context of this paper we will discuss particularly the academic job satisfaction as an amplifier of the organizational intellectual capital within the Portuguese higher education institutions. The research is being carried out at the Center for Research on Higher Education Policies (CIPES) and is being financed by Foundation for Science and Technology. The main research objectives are as follows: RO1: Determine the dimensions associated with job satisfaction of the academic staff; RO2: Analyze how job satisfaction differs among sub-groups of academics – sex, degree of education and institutional type. The main conclusions are that academics are in general satisfied with their jobs but not very or extremely satisfied. Academics more dissatisfied were those with a higher degree of education (PhD) and those teaching in public higher education institutions, especially those in public universities. Academics are more satisfied with “Non academic staff (administrative staff, technical and laboratorial staff)”, “Teaching Climate” and “Colleagues” and express dissatisfaction with “Research Climate” and “Conditions of Employment”. The results are intended as an aid in identifying areas for improvement and, consequently, this data can be used to shape policies and change, promoting the organizational intellectual capital. Key words: academics, job satisfaction, intellectual capital, higher education.

Abstract: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the screening test Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS) for the Portuguese language of Brazil was carried out in this article. The adaptations were developed based on authors' guidelines and specific literature: translation; synthesis; back-translation and cross-cultural adaptation (technical review and semantic equivalence). The tests were adapted with the aid of a pilot group of 46 healthy individuals, mean age 52.6 ± 13.88 years and 13.8 ± 5.10 years of studies, 26 females and 20 males, randomly recruited among the caregivers of the patients of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Goiás, Brazil. After translation of all fifteen ECAS subtests, nine were adapted and six not gone through cross-cultural adaptation. In the Language-Naming subtest the fox figure (13.04% of errors) was replaced by the image of the alligator; 5 words (41.66%) of the Language-Spelling subtest were replaced. In the Executive-Alternation subtest, 11-K or 11-L was accepted as a response, provided the subsequent sequence was correct. A Verbal Fluency Index (IFV) table was established, with data from the pilot group, which will be the reference for the Brazilian version. The three subtests for memory evaluation (Immediate Recall, Delayed Recall and Delayed Recognition) are based on a story that has been adapted to Brazilian culture. The protocol has been translated and adapted to Brazilian Portuguese and has undergone processes of content, verbal comprehension and semantic equivalence, being called Edimburgo - Rastreio Cognitivo-Comportamental em ELA (ECAS-BR). It is necessary to continue this study for external validity, equivalence of measurement and reproducibility.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the functioning of the main Spanish and Portuguese containers ports to observe if they are operating below their production capabilities. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the above-mentioned objective, one possible method is to calculate the data envelopment analysis (DEA) efficiency, and the scale efficiency (SE) of targets, and in order to consider the variability across different samples, a bootstrap scheme has been applied. Findings The results showed that the DEA bootstrap-based approach can not only select a suitable unit which accords with a port’s actual input capabilities, but also provides a more accurate result. The bootstrapped results indicate that all ports do not need to develop future investments to expand port infrastructure. Practical implications The proposed DEA bootstrap-based approach provides useful implications in the robust measurement of port efficiency considering different samples. The study proves the usefulness of this approach as a decision-making tool in port efficiency. Originality/value This study is one of the first studies to apply bootstrap to measure port efficiency under the background of the Spain and Portugal case. In the first stage, two models of DEA have been used to obtain the pure technical, and the technical and SE, and both the input-oriented options: constant return scale and variable return scale. In the second stage, the bootstrap method has been applied in order to determine efficiency rankings of Iberian Peninsula container ports taking into consideration different samples. Confidence interval estimates of efficiency for each port are reported. This paper provides useful insights into the application of a DEA bootstrap-based approach as a modeling tool to aid decision making in measuring port efficiency.

Abstract:
IntroductionProstate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers among men. However, screening for prostate cancer carries many risks and a small benefit. Thus, based on the available evidence, most medical organisations advocate a shared decision-making process, in which decision aids may play an important role. Nevertheless, to date there is no such instrument to be used by Portuguese men. Our goal is to translate and perform the cultural adaptation of an English language prostate cancer screening decision aid called ‘Making the best choice’, in web and printed formats, which has been developed and tested by a workgroup from Georgetown University (USA).Methods and analysisCulturally and technically inappropriate recommendations in the original decision aid will be reviewed by the process coordinator and a linguistic expert. Two forward translations from English to Portuguese will be done, followed by a back-translation and an independent expert review. We will further improve the decision aid through an iterative process of data collection, data analysis and decision aid review. Individual semistructured cognitive interviews will be conducted and audiotaped with 55–69-year-old men recruited from the local community (urban and suburban) of Oporto district. We plan a total sample size of 30 participants (15 interviews per format). All participants will receive written information about the study and will sign individual consent forms. After verbatim transcription of the audiofiles, a thematic categorical analysis will be conducted using Ligre Software.Ethics and disseminationThe study protocol was approved by the Health Ethics Committee from Centro Hospitalar de São João/Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto. Results from this study will be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and the Portuguese decision aid will available to Portuguese men.

Abstract:
AbstractThe purpose of this chapter is to present and discuss the main impacts of Portuguese public policies in the area of education in Portugal, since 25 April 1974. To this end, diversified information was collected, processed and analysed involving legal and other documents about these national policies, especially those of greater impact on Ciganos, in addition to thorough mapping of ongoing projects of local and social support in the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan areas, where the empirical research is being carried out. At a later stage, interviews were held with technical staff, project coordinators and local institutions, as well as Ciganos and their families. The purpose of using various data collection techniques is to capture the reality experienced by Cigano individuals and families, namely patterns of continuity and social change, particularly in the area of education, through triangulation between the discourses of informants and scientific knowledge already consolidated in these matters. We present a critical and reflexive interpretation of the policy orientations and achieved social rights, focusing on narratives of Ciganos, stakeholders and school representatives centred on what has changed in the school trajectories of Ciganos, in terms of continuity, success and permanence in public education.

Abstract:
This chapter reflects upon technology-mediated projects used to discuss and foster cultural awareness and proposes a methodology to be implemented in international, educational environments where communication could easily be hindered by cultural dissimilarities leading to conflict. More specifically, it seeks to answer two main questions, namely, whether technology is an aid or an obstacle in effective communication between students that never meet face-to-face and which obstacles, generated by technology-mediated communication in virtual teams, affect the intended outcome and how. These questions were raised during the participation of the authors of the chapter over a number of years in the Trans-Atlantic & Pacific Project, where the complex process of learning-by-doing was achieved through peer interaction and the completion of realistic collaborative activities performed by North American and Portuguese students, prospect technical writers, and translators, respectively.

Abstract The aim of this chapter is to present a case study of a particular instance of colonial fieldwork to explain why and how social knowledge was first produced and then not applied in the forced resettlement conducted in the Niassa district, in Mozambique’s far north-west, bordering Malawi and Tanzania, during the Portuguese counter-insurgency campaign against the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO). The chapter will explore the Portuguese civil and military authorities’ development discourse and practice as it concerned the inhabitants of the Niassa region. Of particular interest is the work of a female geographer, Raquel Soeiro de Brito (b. 1925), who was a professor at the Advanced Institute of Social Sciences and Overseas Policy (Lisbon Technical University) and researcher at the Mission for the Study of Portuguese Overseas Physical and Human Geography (Portuguese Overseas Research Board). Soeiro de Brito carried out fieldwork in the Niassa plateau and lakeshore before and during the war, her studies focused on the Yao and the Nianja people.

Abstract:
The central aim of this chapter is to verify the extent to which the orientation of scientific research on the topic, leadership follows classical or contemporary approaches, according to analysis of the main databases of publications on the topic in the period 2014–2021, in English and Portuguese. A Focus Group with experts on leadership define 28 descriptors responsible for revealing the incidence and content of publications of different natures with academic, technical, technological or scientific orientations, whether classical or emerging. A quantitative approach followed, through bibliometric research, in which the descriptors were investigated in three selected prestigious databases and two non-prestigious ones. The main conclusions were: (i) the low scientific production and the need for more prestigious publications in Portuguese on the topics of leadership and management; (ii) recognition that the traditional mental model of the twentieth century was massively disseminated in explicit communications in English, in all databases, when compared to the contemporary mental model, with inverse behavior for publications in Portuguese, a phenomenon that has increased over the last few years, contrary to the research expectations.

Abstract:
This chapter examines an implementation of an Activity-based Costing (ABC) system in a Portuguese telecommunications firm called Marconi. It is argued that they changed its management accounting system due to efficiency and institutional pressures from its constituencies following the liberalisation of the Portuguese and European Union telecommunications market. The replacement of Marconi’s “old” management cost accounting system by an ABC system popularised by the business mass media and consultants as a “progressive” management accounting tool, helped display expectations of dynamism and efficiency to important external institutions, such as regulators. Whilst it was used and welcomed by managers dealing with commercial matters, operational managers were more unconvinced and contributed to technical problems affecting its accuracy and operation. The divided reactions of the managers give support to both advocates of ABC and its critics who claim it is beset with problems of economic measurement, behavioural issues during implementation and operation, and questionable cost-benefit returns.

Abstract:
Texts produced by the Brazilian judiciary have a complex and technical vocabulary, with elaborate use of the Portuguese language and many legal terms difficult to be understood, generating a barrier in communication between the judiciary and the population. In this sense, the Automatic Text Simplification (ATS), activity of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) area, can be applied to improve the readability of these types of text using specialized algorithms, and promote scalability in simplifying them, in view of the great demand in the courts. In this context, this article presents an evaluation of four methods of state of the art in text simplification, evaluated according to readability metrics, to improve the quality of existing texts in the judicial summaries, dataset containing 100 summaries of the Federal Regional Court of the 5th Region (TRF5) and another 100 of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The methods MUSS(EN), MUSS(PT), Transformers and NMT + Attention were tested, and the results of the simplifications exceeded the FRE readability index of the original texts, making them more readable.

Abstract:
The debate on what should be offered by universities concerning their marketing education curricula in order to serve the market needs, specifically the employers' has been widely present in the literature. Its relevance derives from the fact that employers are one of the most important stakeholders of higher education institutions, given their responsibility in the career of graduate students. In this chapter we intend to contribute to the understanding of the state of undergraduate marketing education offered by Portuguese universities and assess whether there is a mismatch between marketing education and market needs. A better understanding of the mismatch and its implications can lead to better marketing education programs, increasing not only the acceptance and employability of students but also the transfer of innovative marketing knowledge to companies. The findings show that there is indeed a gap between what is being offered by the academia and what is requested by the job market, in terms of marketing, that could be higher than 50% of the requirements expected by employers.

Abstract:
Between 38°50′30”N/7° 04’35 W and 37°10′13”N/7°23′38”W has located the southernmost border of Europe, which stands apart from Portugal and Spain, which separates part of Portugal and Spain, making it one of the furthest from the central European area. A feature of this Spanish-Portuguese border stretch is that it is closely linked to the Guadiana River, one of the major waterways that cross the Iberian Peninsula from east to west. In 1998, the Albufeira Convention was signed, promoting Iberian cooperation at a scientific and technical level to strengthen the links of communication and collaboration at the technical level - the challenge of shared management of the waters and international basins that affect both countries. The Convention presented challenges and objectives on which the competent administrations have been working since then. Another peculiarity of this territory, except in a few situations, is its low population density. Therefore, knowing the demographic and environmental changes of the municipalities bordering the ‘Raya’ (common name as the border is known in these areas) constitutes valuable information that leads to the territorial management of these peripheral areas.

Abstract:
The contemporary food system, in its global and local dimensions, is a central element of the debate on the sustainability of the planet, a debate that increasingly involves more stakeholders and areas of knowledge in the search for answers to the multiple questions related to the attainment of more sustainable patterns for food and agriculture. The present chapter analyses the participative multi-stakeholder and multilevel model of food governance of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), in which stakeholders from different societal and expertise sectors participate in equal manners in the process of co-construction of institutional, technical, and financing measures for the functioning of a given food system. The present chapter has the main goal of sharing and critically analysing the CPLP´s institutional context for the promotion of sustainable food systems as an example of an integrated methodological approach to support the creation of coordinated public policies and institutional conditions to implement a transition to more sustainable food systems and diets.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to analyze, from the perspective of tax inspectors, what appreciation these tax auditors have to the collaboration between external and internal auditors for the prevention and detection of fraud in organizations. The investigation, based on the opinion of 142 Portuguese tax inspectors, reveals that tax inspectors attach a greater importance to the absence of barriers of communication between external and internal auditors, to the indications of the external to the internal auditors, on situations enhancing risk, and to the fact that, in dubious situations, the internal auditors must listen the opinion of the external auditors. In turn, tax inspectors value less the consideration of the external auditors in the work developed by the internal auditors, the frequency of meetings between the external and internal auditors, and the confidence of the external auditors in the technical work quality of the internal auditors. Despite the consistency of these results, the present study has allowed us to detect some differences between the tax inspectors surveyed.

Abstract:
This article concerns to a current research that aims to develop and implement processes of analysis focusing on design, in particular with regard to the identification, study and the redefinition of new concepts for the automotive segmentation. The project also intends to identify the types most widely sold in Portugal from 1990 to 2013 and produce knowledge in the area of automotive design according to the characteristics and preferences of Portuguese drivers, mainly focusing on the user with the license under the age of 30. The user segmentation versus the automobile segmentation must be approached by common indicators, unlimited by technical terms non consistent with the Portuguese market, to its function and its user. Portugal offers good conditions suiting as a "living laboratory" to experience new mobility concepts. The small size of the territory is combined with the Portuguese willingness for innovation, gathering the ingredients to make of Portugal as a trial area and experimentation (Pinto, 2011). The analysis model centered on design aims to blur the technical barriers of the segmentation imposed by the several entities in the automotive sector and to produce a matrix more flexible and accessible to the user's knowledge, understanding and to its needs at the time of purchase.

Abstract:
Performative architecture suppose synergy between both functional and formal aspects of architectural design. Considering these aspects as distinct from each other may result in an architectural expression where the functional and technical aspects are merely an afterthought, added in the final stage to comply with regulations and standards. A more comprehensive approach to design considers its performance in all stages of the design process, integrating the technical and aesthetic aspects. This research intends to reassert the role of designers in ensuring the performance of buildings by integrating actively simulation software in the design process. Climate Studio and Rhinoceros 3D were used to analyse the daylight and thermal performance of the case study that supports this research. The architectural field is undergoing a transformation through the growing integration of digital and computational tools, experiencing a shift in the architectural design process. Since the 1970s, computer-based modelling and simulation software have been employed to analyze the performance of buildings. Currently, due to the progress in both hardware and software, simulation tools are extensively available and can be integrated into various stages of the design process. The housing complex of Bouça Residents' Association results from a notable initiative that aimed to offer comfortable and affordable housing to individuals residing in the informal communities known as "ilhas" in Porto. Designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, the project represents a pivotal moment in the 20th-century Portuguese social housing experiments and stands out as a significant milestone in the history of Portuguese architecture. This study examines various design alternatives, building upon the existing case study, to explore the benefits of integrating modelling and simulation software to evaluate and enhance their performance.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this article is to present a set of experiences and challenges related to the current Buzios FPSOs and the perspectives offered by these related experiences, which should drive further enhancements for next generations of pre-salt production units. Buzios field is a giant oil discovery located at Brazilian southeast coast and has four production systems already in operation: P-74, P-75, P-76 and P-77. Throughout these projects, Petrobras observed technical and business opportunities that are going to lead improvements for next generation of Buzios field's FPSOs. These include enhancements on high production wells, H2S removal technology, vessel standardization, digital transformation solutions, design procedures improvements and several measures to strength the integration between design, construction, commissioning and operation phases. During the construction, commissioning and startup period of the Buzios’ current installed units, Petrobras identified technical issues that should be addressed in order to add value to the next generation of Buzios’ FPSOs. These experiences point out to the need of technical design improvements and reviews such as: change in technology of H2S removal from solid bed to membranes; a complete analysis of hull capacities and dimensions and standardization of the vessel; and a set of standardization methods and processes to develop the basic design - including aspects of digital transformation. The result was a standard design project called Reference Project ("Projeto de Referência" in Portuguese) that intends to be a reference for new units to be installed in Buzios field. This design also intends to be the basis to other projects in order to allow faster business decisions.

Abstract:
The higher education institutions use scientific and multidisciplinary electronic publication with an anonymous review process and free access to spread technical and scientific knowledge. The Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB) has two electronic journals with the aim of provoking, in young people, the search for wisdom, scientific spirit, respect for authorship and boosting reading and writing skills. This paper presents an exploratory research that evaluated the student's production and publication from IPB by applying a questionary about scientific literacy in the first semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. Participated 102 individuals, majority women, with Portuguese nationality, undergraduate students from Higher School of Education of IPB. The analysis revealed that 71 (69,6%) students have difficulties linked to reading and comprehension skills, just as 82 (80,4%) with scientific writing. That aspect may concern a shortage that debate characteristics of scientific reading, interpretation, and publication. Also, 85 (83.3%) students had not yet published any article, which may require scientific literacy for a better understanding of the scientific method. However, it was possible to note several other types of production developed within the scope of school activities, which may come to stimulate scientific literacy.

Alves, Tiago, and António R. Andrade. "Scheduling Maintenance Technicians in a Railway Depot." In 2021 Joint Rail Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc2021-60425.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a mathematical programming model that optimizes the daily schedule of maintenance technicians in a railway depot. The aim of the model is the minimization of the associated labor costs, while assigning the different technicians and skills required for each maintenance task. A case study of a Portuguese train operating company is explored, including many technical constraints imposed by the company. A mixed-integer linear programming model is formulated and applied to the case study, while observing the rolling stock schedule and the maintenance tactical plan. The optimized solution shows that the maintenance team could be shortened, as some workers are not necessary to carry out all maintenance actions, suggesting the need for more flexible maintenance crew scheduling and associated labor conditions. The present model is integrated within a tactical maintenance planning model, which finds a feasible annual maintenance plan for the entire fleet, and an operational maintenance scheduling model, which assigns train units to service tasks and schedules the maintenance tasks within the rolling stock. Together, the three models provide a decision framework that can support maintenance planning and scheduling decisions. Finally, the present maintenance crew scheduling model adds a key aspect to the literature: the skills of maintenance technicians.

Abstract:
Addressing the acceptability of automated vehicles (AVs) implies, beyond technical, legal, or ethical aspects, the debate on perceptions and use intentions. The focus of this study is placed on questioning the technique by the social dimension: what acceptability profiles emerge from these perceptions? This study analyzes the determinant factors of AVs acceptability to identify different Portuguese population clusters. A survey was developed, in the scope of the AUTODRIVING project, with 501 participants. Three acceptability clusters were identified: Objectors; Ambivalent; and Enthusiasts. To complement these results, five focus groups were carried out, involving both professional and regular drivers. The results enabled the access to a situated point of view, considering the current experience of driving, particularly in the case of professional drivers. This study could contribute to deploying AVs, highlighting the importance of a contextualized analysis hic and nunc, and allowing to bring to the fore the demands and constraints of driving.

Elacqua, Gregory, Patricia Navarro-Palau, Maria Prada, and Sammara Soares. The impact of online technical education on schooling outcomes: Evidence from Brazil. Inter-American Development Bank, November 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003778.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of online technical education offered to complement regular academic instruction in high school on student schooling outcomes. Using a regression discontinuity design with an oversubscribed large-scale online technical course in Brazil, we find that students who score above the cutoff on the online technical education admission exam are less likely to drop out of high school, while their performance on standardized tests in math and Portuguese is similar to that of students just below the admission exam cutoff. Overall, we provide evidence that complementing high school regular instruction with technical education in an online format can be an effective public policy to increase students work readiness as it reduces the dropout rate from secondary education without negatively affecting students academic proficiency.

Donovan, Michael G., and Jolyne Sanjak. A Methodological Framework for Comparative Land Governance Research in Latin America and the Caribbean. Inter-American Development Bank, May 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0009291.

Full text
Abstract:
Strengthening land governance is critically needed in Latin America and the Caribbean to protect the environment, achieve gender equality in land rights, expand the transparency of land records, and facilitate planned urban growth. Inadequate land administration limits the development of housing markets, tax collection, and the scale and speed of housing and land regularization programs in low-income communities. The region faces major challenges in land tenure informality and overlapping mandates for titling, mapping, and registration. In response to these issues, this technical note identifies the gaps in land governance information for five Latin American and Caribbean countries (Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago), and provides a comparative methodological framework for field research in these countries. The annex provides Spanish and Portuguese translations of the questionnaire, which includes new questions absent from existing tools, such as the World Bank's Land Governance Assessment Framework and USAID's Blueprint for Strengthening Real Property Rights.

Salavisa, Isabel, Mark Soares, and Sofia Bizarro. A Critical Assessment of Organic Agriculture in Portugal: A reflection on the agro-food system transition. DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.15847/dinamiacet-iul.wp.2021.05.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last few decades, the organic agriculture sector has experienced sustained growth. Globally, as well as in the European Union and Portugal, organic production accounts for just under 10% of total Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA) (FiBL, 2019; Eurostat, 2019; DGADR, 2019; INE, 2019; GPP, 2019). This growth has been seen in terms of production, number of producers, amount of retail sales, imports and exports. This article attempts to build on the multi-level perspective (MLP) of the socio-technical (ST) transitions theory by employing a whole systems analysis (Geels, 2018) of organic agriculture in Portugal, which defends an integrated vision of the systems, where multiple interactions occur within and among the niche, the regime and the landscape levels. This approach has been employed in order to develop a critical analysis of the current state of the Portuguese organic agriculture sector, stressing the multiplicity of elements that are contributing to the agro-food system´s transformation into a more sustainable one. In fact, the agro-food system is related with climate change but also has connections with other domains such as public health, water management, land use and biodiversity. Therefore, it is affected by shifts in these areas. This analysis considers developments in increasing domestic organic production, number of producers, amount of retail sales, imports, exports, market innovations, and the sector´s reconfiguration. The organic sector´s increase has been attributed to European regulation, institutionalization, standardization, farmer certification, external (government) subsidy support programs, incremental market improvements (visibility and product access), the emergence of new retailers, the rise of supporting consumers and a shift away from conventional agriculture (Truninger, 2010; DGADR, 2019; Pe´er et al, 2019). However, together with positive incentives, this sector also faces numerous barriers that are hindering a faster transformation. Difficulties for the sector to date have included: product placement; a disconnect between production, distribution and marketing systems; high transport costs; competition from imports; European subsidies focused on extensive crops (pastures, olive groves, and arable crops), entailing a substantial growth in the area of pasture to the detriment of other crops; the fact that the products that are in demand (fresh vegetables and fruit) are being neglected by Portuguese producers; expensive certification procedures; lack of adequate support and market expertise for national producers; the hybrid configuration of the sector; and price. Organic agriculture as a niche-innovation is still not greatly contributing to overall agricultural production. The low supply of organic products, despite its ever-increasing demand, suggests that a transition to increased organic production requires a deeper and faster food system reconfiguration, where an array of distinct policies are mobilized and a diversity of actions take place at different levels (Geels, 2018; Pe´er et al, 2019). This paper will attempt to contribute an overall critical assessment of the organic sector´s features and evolution and will identify some of the main obstacles to be overcome, in order to boost the sustainability transition of the agro-food system in Portugal.

Abstract:
In this issue, this section presents four book reviews, with the first and the last being written by the authors themselves. A novelty is that all of them are also available in English language (Portuguese versions are also available on page 101). We remind you that the reviews are written in an abbreviated and concise way to summarize the content of the books (on subjects related to the various sciences involving acoustics, vibrations, and audio) and to bring information about the authors (to further contextualize the works). We present reviews of the following books in this issue: Room Acoustics: Design and Modeling (Acústica de Salas: Projeto e Modelagem) Author: Eric Brandão | Blucher, 2016 Array Signal Processing: Concepts and Techniques Authors: Don H. Johnson and Dan E. Dudgeon | Prentice Hall, 1993. Acoustics in Building Rehabilitation (A Acústica na Reabilitação de Edifícios) Author: Jorge Patrício | Engebook, 2018 (4 ed.) Virtual Experiments in Mechanical Vibrations: Structural Dynamics and Signal Processing Authors: Bin Tang and Michael J. Brennan | Wiley, 2022 Eric Brandão, professor of the Acoustical Engineering Program (EAC) at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM, Brazil), presents his book on Room Acoustics (a subject he teaches in the program) — the book was technically revised by William D’Andrea Fonseca (who is an EAC professor as well). The work won the Jabuti Prize (2017) and is in its first revised edition. Next, we have a classic, “Array Signal Processing”, by American professors Don H. Johnson and Dan E. Dudgeon, a must-read for studies on the subject that deal with mechanical or electromagnetic waves. The third book is authored by Jorge Patrício (professor in Portugal), who is a reference in Building Acoustics. Finally, we have the book “Virtual Experiments in Mechanical Vibrations: Structural Dynamics and Signal Processing”, by Bin Tang and Michael J. Brennan, who write the review of their own book (an international collaboration). We hope that reading the reviews offers an initial understanding and good impression about the studies and awakens the desire to know them in their entirety: an excellent way to expand knowledge and keep up to date in the field.
