Abstract:
The hypothesis put forward in this thesis is that tourism can be the agent for the sustainable conservation and development of the valuable legacy of colonial built heritage by capitalizing on its tangible and intangible assets. The key variable is the recognition of the intrinsic value of both iconic and non-iconic properties and sites that constitute the extrinsic value of the cultural attractions of the tourism destination. The research problem is concerned with assessing the impact of contemporary tourism development on these attractions and identifying the issues affecting preservation and realization of asset potential. The research aims to support the collaboration between tourism professionals and cultural heritage stakeholders committed to resolving issues and problems for the destination identified within the stages of the tourism destination's life cycle of evolution (Butler, 1980).

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of neutrality and collaboration during the Second World War in East Asia. It analyses the relations between China and Portugal during the conflict and the immediate post-war period, with a particular focus on the enclave of Macau, the only foreign-administered territory in China not to be occupied by Japan. It argues that the practice of Portuguese neutrality in East Asia was marked by great ambivalence and used by different actors for their own, often conflicting, ends. In social history terms, Macau was part of the war, with comparable experiences to other cities in China, including a massive refugee influx, as well as everyday experiences of hunger, popular mobilisation for relief, and urban crime. Wartime Macau was marked by multiple layers of collaboration involving Chinese, Portuguese, British, Japanese, and others. This thesis also argues that wartime issues left unsolved had an impact on Sino-Portuguese relations after the war. Its dealings with a small European imperial power reveal China's attempts and difficulties to exercise its regained sovereignty and new international status.

Abstract: Considering the ethnographical work conducted in the Casa de Macau in São Paulo, we shall retrace here the experience of these people that abandoned their city in China and immigrate to São Paulo between 1953 and 1977. We intend to discuss both the identity dynamics of this group, with the diaspora as reference, and how this group reacts to the changes around them and continually reinvent a universe of traditions. In order to do that our research considered the narratives of their individual story (Macanese in São Paulo)and some reports of Macanese from Rio de Janeiro, Lisboa and Macao, Macao¿s singularities itself, and the contemporary historiography on it. From direct contact with interviews, talks and reports of life stories, we wanted to understand some unknown stories of Macao: those that concern to the successive movements of families leaving it due to the crises that has marked that enclave since the middle of the XIX century

Abstract:
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau Mestre em Engenharia Civil – Perfil de Construção
The topic about internationalization in construction industry is often discussed and debated. In a context of internationalization success, it is significant to evaluate the process of the international experience by exploring the underlying reasons and factors. This master thesis is a descriptive and qualitative study about the internationalization strategies and methods of construction firms. Based on the value and contribution to the research regarding the topic, it sets out to explore the similarities and differences of the internationalization decision-making behavior between by eastern and western construction firms. To fulfill the objective stated above, in-depth, individual, face-to-face, research interviews were conducted involving six top-level management executives of Hong Kong construction firms in Macau, towards gathering all the relevant information regarding their perception of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, risks and entry strategies related to international expansion. Based on the analysis for the information collected, a comparison with the western behavior was conducted regarding the mentioned factors, based on recent similar studies conducted for Portuguese-European firms. The findings suggested that (1) the generalization of Hong Kong construction firms internationalization behavior is valid to a wider context of typical Chinese construction firms behavior,(2) significant parities and disparities were found between Portuguese – European construction firms and Hong Kong – Chinese construction firms, (3) both western and eastern construction firms follow basically the same logic and framework for the internationalization decision-making behavior. Based on these findings, a specific internationalization method is proposed towards addressing the specific characteristics and needs of Asian construction companies.

Abstract:
Following its handover in 1999, Macao has been given the mission of operating as a platform between China and the Portuguese speaking countries. Under the close orientation of Beijing, its historical, lusophone and multicultural vocations emerge aligned with the Chinese strategy of going out, which has been attempting to transform the region into a service and bilingual talent training center. In this context, Portugal represents an old acquaintance and friend, having on its side not only the vector of a shared culture and language, but the one of affection as well. Having placed on its most pressing foreign policy horizon the relationship with the Portuguese speaking world, it matters thus understand its position towards the concretization of those goals, also strategic to its international assertation. Therefore, this dissertation proposes to analyze our country’s role in promoting its cultural diplomacy in the territory from 2009 to 2019 via three significant organisms: the Instituto Português do Oriente (IPOR), the Escola Portuguesa de Macau and the Consulate General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong. From a constructivist theoretical approach grounded in the importance of the ideas, identities and norms in the decision-making processes and State standing in the world affairs, several leads have been raised for a better understanding of the Portuguese behavior. This study concludes that, regardless the previously mentioned institutions’ positive efforts, Portugal’s participation remains limited and dependent on the local and Chinese initiatives.
