Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to identify trends in the economic behavior of the population in the field of consumer, saving, investment, and credit activity. The analysis of human economic actions only for solving scientific problems is divided into the listed types, but in practice, an individual makes a particular decision (chooses a certain strategy) under the impact of simultaneously influencing groups of factors that depend on gender and age, place and living conditions, social affiliation-income group, level of education, psychological and value attitudes, level of development of the financial infrastructure in a certain territory, stage of economic development of a country and / or region. And now another significant factor has been added — the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences. The article presents the results of the first stage of the interdisciplinary research project "Socio-psychological factors of economic behavior of the population: risks and opportunities (cross-country comparisons)" carried out by the authors. On the basis of the data obtained with the help of the sociological tools developed by the authors, the types of economic behavior are investigated in terms of four psychosocial aspects closely related to the features of mentality: trust, risk, stress, responsibility. An interdisciplinary approach to the study of the motives and strategies of economic behavior provides identification of the most realistic picture of all current risks and opportunities for population in the financial and consumer services market. At the second stage, the data obtained by the authors from the results of the survey of the Russian population, will be compared on the basis of a comparative analysis with the outcomes of the forthcoming surveys of respondents from Poland, Belarus, Lithuania and Slovakia.

Orsi, Maia. "Population synthesis models for IMF studies." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2014. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4525/.

Full text
Abstract:
Population synthesis models (PSMs) are fundamental tools to study the star formation history and IMF of unresolved stellar populations using spectral features. This work presents a new set of PSMs constructed using theoretical isochrones and two state-ofthe- art synthetic spectral libraries. The BT-Settl and Munari libraries were chosen for their ability to predict the observed values of Lick-type and IMF-sensitive indices in individual stars of the solar neighbourhood. The BT-Settl library was used to sample the cool main sequence stars and the Munari library for the rest of the evolutionary phases. The PSMs cover a range of metallicities with [Fe/H]= 0, -1.31 and -1.81 for scaled-solar and α-enhanced metal mixtures. The models were used to study the behaviour of the IMF indices defined in the literature and the results are in good agreement with what other PSMs have determined. The PSMs in this work predict a strong degeneracy between age, metallicity and IMF. I used the models to study which are the main evolutionary phases contributing to each IMF-sensitive index and found that most indices reach their final integrated values before the turn off. The post-main sequence stars contribute mainly to the continuum of these bands. Uncertainties in the the effective temperature of the isochrones can affect IMF estimates. The PSMs were applied to extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) and early-type galaxies (ETGs) using data from the literature. I determined the ages, metallicities and IMFs of these systems using index combinations in the optical and infrared. I explored how the morphology of the Horizontal Branch (HB) and dynamical evolution (which are key uncertainties in the modelling of GCs) can affect the IMF predictions. In a population with a Milky Way IMF, dynamical evolution can make the IMF indices mimic a bottom-light IMF. HB morphology has no impact on the IMF estimates at low [Fe/H]. In the IMF index-index diagrams for GCs, the results are significantly affected by the unknown sodium abundances of these systems. Using the PSMs in this work the best index combination to determine the IMF is CaH1 and TiO2. The ETGs and the [Fe/H]=0 GCs appear to have a bottom-heavy IMF with x ~ 3:0. These results are discussed in the work.

Abstract:
Disease gene fine mapping is an important task in human genetic research. Association analysis is becoming a primary approach for localizing disease loci, especially when abundant SNPs are available due to the well improved genotyping technology during the last decades. Despite the rapid improvement of detection ability, there are many limitations of association strategy. In this dissertation, we focused on three different topics including haplotype similarity based test, association test incorporating genotyping error and simulation tool for large data set. 1) Previous haplotype similarity based tests donât have the ability to incorporate covariates in the test. In chapter 2, we proposed a new association method based on haplotype similarity that incorporates covariates and utilizes maximum amount of data information. We found that our method gives power improvement when neither LD nor allele frequency is too low and is comparable under other scenarios. 2) In chapter 3, we proposed a new strategy that incorporates the genotyping uncertainty to assess the association between traits and SNPs. Extensive simulation studies for case-control designs demonstrated that intensity information based association test can reduce the impact induced by genotyping error. 3) In chapter 4, we described simulation software, SimuGeno, which is used to simulate large scale genomic data for case-control association studies.

Abstract:

This study examined sexual victimization, resilience, and revictimization in the transgender community. Participants were recruited nationally through targeted Facebook advertising. This study observed that transgender participants were more likely to experience victimization and revictimization when compared to cisgender participants. It was also observed that transgender participants had more positive attitudes toward help-seeking but scored lower on a resilience scale than cisgender and sexual minorities. Implications will be discussed.

Weir, William. "Genomic and population genetic studies on Theileria annulata." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2006. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3584/.

Full text
Abstract:
Tropical theileriosis, caused by the tick-transmitted protozoan Theileria annulata, is a major disease of cattle in many regions of the developing world. Current research is directed towards developing a sub-unit vaccine, and it is therefore important that genetic diversity in field populations of the parasite is investigated and quantified. The recently completed genome sequence provided an opportunity to develop a panel of genetic markers for population studies and also enabled the identification of novel antigen genes. The genome was bioinformatically screened to identify micro- and mini-satellite loci, several of which were PCR amplified from a series of diverse parasite stocks in order to characterise their polymorphism and to determine their species-specificity. A panel of ten markers were selected for population genetic studies and were used to genotype laboratorymaintained cell lines and clonal stocks of T. annulata isolated from different countries. Cell lines comprised a multiplicity of genotypes, while clonal stocks showed evidence of a single haploid genome. Preliminary population genetic analysis revealed a large amount of genotypic diversity both between and within countries and indicated that the parasite population is geographically sub-structured. Comparison of a limited number of stocks isolated in different countries demonstrated that genetic differentiation between populations positively correlates with intervening physical distance. A low standard index of association (IS A) suggested that the population in Tunisia is in linkage equilibrium, indicating that the parasite possesses a panmictic (randomly mating) population structure. To confirm these findings, a large number of field isolates from Tunisia and Turkey were analysed (n = 305). This supported the earlier finding that geographical sub-structuring separates panmictic populations and an almost identical amount of genetic differentiation between countries was evident (FST = 0.05). Limited linkage disequilibrium was observed in some populations and this was attributed to several factors including inbreeding and the Wahlund effect, caused by putatively immigrant sub-populations. A similar multiplicity of infection was demonstrated in vaccinated and unvaccinated animals and the immunising genotype did not appear to establish in the field population. Multiplicity of infection was instead shown to positively correlate with the host age in several sampling locations. The genome of T. annulata was compared with that of T. parva to identify gene families under the influence of positive selection using mean family inter-genomic nonsynonymous to synonymous substitution rates (dNdS). Codon usage between the species and between several life-cycle stages within T. annulata was shown to be virtually invariant and independent of the dNdS distribution. In addition to a subset of merozoite genes, which were predicted to be antigens on the basis of their motif signature, a subtelomeric gene family (SVSP) and a family of parasite-encoded host nuclear genes (TashATs) showed evidence of positive selection between the species. An allelesequencing approach was taken to verify these predictions which indicated that, in general, the TashAT genes are under the effect of purifying selection while two SVSP genes were shown to be highly variable, however there was no firm evidence of positive selection. One of the merozoite antigen candidates showed evidence of both positive immune selection and balancing selection. Consequently, further studies are indicated to assess whether this gene has value as a vaccine candidate.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to investigate observational studies on the association between religion and sleep in the adult population. To this end, the proposed systematic review will address the following question: What is the role religion plays in shaping an individual's sleep health? Condition being studied: Sleep is a fundamental biological process increasingly recognized as a critical indicator of development and overall health. Generally, insufficient sleep is associated with depressed mood, daytime fatigue, poor daytime functioning and daytime sleepiness, increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and the cause of the higher risk of mortality. Furthermore, changes in sleep architecture and quality have been related to cognitive deterioration, including dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Here we will identify the role of religion in elements of sleep health, to include sleep duration and sleep quality, and associated health outcomes in the adult population.

Full text
Abstract:
In February 2023, the wolf population was likely composed of 31 wolves. This is a slight increase from last year’s estimate of 28 wolves (Fig. 1). The wolf population includes an East Pack with 11 wolves, a West Pack with five wolves, three groups of at least three wolves each, and several other wolves that are either loners or only loosely affiliated with one of the smaller groups. There is evidence that pups were born into three, possibly four, litters in April 2022. For context, no litters are thought to have been born between 2015 and 2018. However, following the translocation of wolves to Isle Royale between 2018 and 2019, one litter was born in 2019, two litters were born in both 2020 and 2021, and possibly four litters were born in 2022. Thus, the reproductive success of the wolf population has steadily increased over the last five years. The per-capita kill rate, which is an indication of the rate that wolves acquire food, was 0.52 moose per wolf per month. That rate is somewhat lower than last year’s estimate of 0.71, but similar to what is expected given the number of wolves and moose currently on the island. The estimated abundance of moose is 967, which is a 28 percent decline from last year’s estimate of 1,346. Longer-term population trends suggest that the moose population had increased greatly over an eight-year period (2011-2019) but then started to decline rapidly over the last few years. The proportion of the moose population that is newly recruited individuals (i.e., nine-month-old calves in February) was 1.7 percent, which is very low compared to the long-term average. Predation rate was estimated to be 10 percent, which is similar to last year’s estimate and close to the long-term average. While predation and low recruitment were important contributors to the moose decline, starvation also played an important role.

Abstract:
This report, which summarizes the major study findings on population and family planning (FP) trends in the Philippines, was prepared for the Research Unit of the Family Planning Services (FPS) of the Department of Health (DOH). It was used by the FPS in its National Consultative Planning Workshop in early 1994 to formulate plans for the Philippine Family Planning Program for 1994–1995. Workshop participants included DOH Regional Family Planning Coordinators, representatives of local government offices engaged in population and health activities, and local NGOs and women's groups. The report alerted participants to population and FP issues and trends that could assist them in formulating their FP program targets and strategies in their own areas and localities. Study findings are organized into those relating to indicators of demand, and those bearing on the supply of FP services. Considering the large number of population and FP studies that have been made to date, this review limits itself to a presentation of related trends in fertility and FP awareness, approval, and use over time. The report provides a backdrop for the formulation and implementation of local action plans to advance the national FP program.

This is an increase from the next most recent estimate of 12-14 wolves, made 24 months earlier in March 2020 (Fig. 1). The wolf population appears to be primarily organized as two main socia groups—an eastern pack consisting of at least 13 wolves and a western pack most likel consisting of 13 wolves—and two wolves that may not be part of either pack. There is evidence that pups were born to both packs in April 2021. For context, there is also evidence that one litter of pup was born in 2019 and two litters were born in 2020. Wolves appear to be an important cause of mortality for moose once again. In particular, this past year, the proportion of the moose population killed by wolves (i.e., the predation rate) was 8.7 percent. That rate is almost twice as high as the predation rate observed in 2020 (4.5 percent) and it is the highest predation rate observed since 2011. Overall, the new population of wolves on Isle Royale appear to be well-established and functioning healthily. Over the past year, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) continued its efforts to outfit a small proportion of the wolf population with GPS radio collars to help monitor the recovering population. The estimated abundance of moose declined by 28 percent, from 1,876 to 1,346, between February 2020 and February 2022. Longer-term population trends suggest that the moose population had increased greatly over an eight-year period (2011-2019) but then started to decline over the last few years. The decline in moose abundance is likely a consequence of several factors, including higher predation rates by wolves, severe burdens of parasites (winter ticks), and a shortage of winter forage, indicated in part by an unusually high number of moose dying from malnutrition over the past two years. That shortage of winter forage, specifically balsam fir, is likely due to a combination of intense browsing by moose in previous years and recent defoliation due to budworm (moth larvae) in some regions of the park. In February 2022, 19 moose were outfitted with GPS collars so their movements and behavior can be monitored, adding to the 45 moose radio-collared between 2019 and 2020. Rogo, Khama, and Ann Leonard. Unsafe Abortion in Kenya: Findings from Eight Studies. Population Council, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1996.1022.

Abstract:
One of the most topical areas in reproductive health today is the consequences of induced and often unsafe abortion. Safe motherhood initiatives continue to highlight the contribution of unsafe abortion to the persistent high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. In some countries, unsafe abortion is responsible for up to half of all maternal mortality and morbidity, with adolescents constituting a significant proportion of those procuring unsafe abortions. In Kenya, concern about the problem of incomplete and septic abortion has increased, particularly on the part of service providers who must treat women suffering from the complications of poorly performed procedures. Debate about what can be done to reduce the negative consequences of unsafe abortion ranges from highly emotional arguments to pragmatic policies and programs. In 1998, in response to requests for assistance from Kenyan policymakers, the Population Council embarked on a four-year collaborative program to document the magnitude and nature of the problem of unsafe abortion. With assistance from the Population Council, researchers from the Centre for the Study of Adolescence designed and implemented a package of eight studies. This monograph provides a summary of the findings of these studies.
