Abstract:
Despite many music classrooms welcoming popular musics in striving towards an inclusive and democratic education, there has been relatively little research into teachers’ decisions regarding which popular musics are included and which are excluded from classroom activities. This is of particular interest taking into account arguments that the norms and values associated with some popular musics or songs exist in conflict with the ideals and ideologies of formal schooling. Through interviews with five Finnish music teachers, this article explores the identification and navigation of “problematic” popular musics in school contexts. Teachers noted that four musical features: lyrics, imagery, musical mood and emotional affect, influenced their constructions of popular musics and their repertoire selections for students. This study suggests that popular repertoire decisions are ethically, ideologically, and politically loaded, and that welcoming students’ own musics does not necessarily result in a more inclusive, democratic classroom culture.

Abstract:
AbstractAlthough the pace of life is very high today, young people spend free time among applications and electronic devices, but theatrical performances are relatively popular nonetheless. Theaters to appeal to young people should use online tools as a basic form of advertising. One of the most popular forms of e-marketing is the search engine SEM. The research question was formulated in the form: do the theaters advertise in paid search results PPC? To answer this question, we analyzed the search results on Google, including AdWords ads, among Polish theaters for popular keywords. By analyzing the results obtained, it can be said that definitely theaters do not use PPC as an advertising tool. Among the popular keywords only 5 theaters were identified using this form, which represents less than 3% of all the theaters in Poland. The reasons for low popularity are the high costs and the lack of advertising due to the relatively large number of contemporary theater customers.

Abstract:
Folk/Popular culture comprises a many-sided and complex term, existing in both its traditional (Folk) and contemporary dimension (Popular). Many of its aspects can be traced in Primary Education school books, but in many cultural school displays as well. Student participation in cultural oriented activities encourages enculturation, the awareness of belonging in one or many cultural groups, and, successively, an understanding of one’s cultural identity. This article presents the results of research conducted all over Greece concerning educational programs and activities about folk/popular culture as shown in the websites of Greek public and private Primary Schools and Kindergartens, utilizing online data collection.

Abstract: Between 1945 and 1964, Brazil experienced a period of political parties creation and of the establishment of direct elections for the most important positions of the executive and legislative powers. The period was also marked by developmentalist euphoria, strikes and urban riots against the rising on the living cost. The worker, recognized in the voter condition, became central to the achievement of public power.Florianópolis, unlike other capitals or cities with large industries, had no significant contingent of workers. The city¿s dynamic relied on the condition of administrative center of the state of Santa Catarina. However, the absence of a working class in the "classic¿ sense did not mean the sterilization of social struggles. From the analysis of various sources ¿ such as newspapers, opinion polls, electoral data, parliamentary documents, this study investigated the channels of dialogues established between the working classes and political groups. It was verified a more complex conjuncture than the traditional interpretation of Santa Catarina political history. Some understandings of the state as polarized between UDN and PSD, with a weak PTB, restricted to the role of "true balance¿ in the equilibrium between the two major parties, were relativized. Interpretations based on the results of the elections equally affirmed that Florianópolis presented "strong predominance¿ of PSD. However, the investigation of multiple experiences woven among candidates, parties and workers, embodied with the analysis of the vote distributions of the candidate for city regions, allowed seeing beyond the prevalence of one acronym. Political leaders, such as Aderbal Ramos da Silva, later remembered as the 'city owner¿, was not always recognized. On the other hand, characters labeled as "troublemakers¿ or "demagogues¿, likeManoel de Menezes, were significant political forces, sometimes able to put into question the dominance of the so-called big parties. The relationship between politics and the working class from Florianópolis was not, nor can it be thought of, as mere reproduction of national movements, neither as epiphenomenon isolated in its peculiarities. Thus, from the relations between the regional and the national, the present work seeks to understand the unstable alliances between social actors and the various means by which the working classes inserted the fight for rights on the political agenda of the city

Within this project we shall try to show the links between urban children s nursery rhymes, their history, structure, methods of production and their practical use within the class room, being used in musical activities for children aged between seven and ten years of age, helping to create a musical base. The project will involve students from two different schools in Sao Paulo. The research will consist of three chapters arranged in the following manner: The first chapter studies traditional nursery rhymes through their historical and cultural origins; we shall be aiming to analyze their inherent musical and poetical structures. The main emphasis of this chapter will be to show how this type of traditional nursery rhyme has evolved since the beginning of the last century and how they are presented today. In the second chapter we shall focus on a more specific area, being modern urban nursery rhymes from the city of Sao Paulo. We have selected three of the main composers from this area and through interviews we shall be looking to get closer to this very specific area within the musical field; which is now calling a lot of attention as a social project. The third chapter will be a practical exercise, creating two original songs, designed specifically for use within the class room and also in local choirs; This chapter will also include activities developed with pupils from the two participating schools.

Abstract:
Crowd simulation models usually aim at producing visually credible crowds with the intent of giving life to virtual environments. Our work focusses on generating statistically consistent behaviours that can be used to pilot crowd simulation models over long periods of time, up to multiple days. In real crowds, people's behaviours mainly depend on the activities they intend to perform. The way this activity is scheduled rely on the close interaction between the environment, space and time constraints associated with the activity and personal characteristics of individuals. Compared to the state of the art, our model better handle this interaction. Our main contributions lie in the domain of activity scheduling and path planning. First, we propose an individual activity scheduling process and its extension to cooperative activity scheduling. Based on descriptions of the environment, of intended activities and of agents' characteristics, these processes generate a task schedule for each agent. Locations where the tasks should be performed are selected and a relaxed agenda is produced. This task schedule is compatible with spatial and temporal constraints associated with the environment and with the intended activity of the agent and of other cooperating agents. It also takes into account the agents personal characteristics, inducing diversity in produced schedules. We show that our model produces schedules statistically coherent with the ones produced by humans in the same situations. Second, we propose a hierarchical path-planning process. It relies on an automatic environment analysis process that produces a semantically coherent hierarchical representation of virtual cities. The hierarchical nature of this representation is used to model different levels of decision making related to path planning. A coarse path is first computed, then refined during navigation when relevant information is available. It enable the agent to seamlessly adapt its path to unexpected events. The proposed model handles long term rational decisions driving the navigation of agents in virtual cities. It considers the strong relationship between time, space and activity to produce more credible agents' behaviours. It can be used to easily populate virtual cities in which observable crowd phenomena emerge from individual activities

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe project aims to develop technical skills in primary school students. Technical courses are usually not popular among schoolchildren. With the introduction of the National Plan for Digital Education (PNSD) by Italian Education Ministry since 2015, words like coding, robotics and computational thinking are used more frequently in primary school classrooms. CoderDojo is a worldwide movement working to introduce children to robotics and computer science. As CoderDojo Pomezia, we prepared a number of activities to encourage students’ interest in computational thinking and robotics, and to improve their skills. In recent years, we have held several workshops for primary school students. The workshops have involved activities such as programming robotics kits, using robotics with six-year-olds, programming videogames, modelling 3D objects. The activities always have a hands-on approach. Over 100 primary schoolers have participated in the workshops. We have also held workshops to train teachers to introduce these technical skills in their classrooms. This paper presents the work of CoderDojo Pomezia to train children and demonstrate how students have improved their technical and social skills.

AbstractChildren’s Internet use is often presumed to consist only of popular entertainment activities such as scrolling through social media, playing games, or watching videos, all typically undertaken on personal devices, with Internet safety policy and practice targeted accordingly. But in reality, children’s Internet use is much more varied, including interactions with screenless smart devices in the home and via third party services outside the home. This chapter considers the practical and policy implications of such use, focusing on possible security and privacy risks as well as larger ethical questions about the datafication of childhood.

Abstract:
Fake news has been a popular topic since the 2016 U.S. elections, where researchers have studied its impact on politics and social unrest. In recent times, there have been cases of fake news being perpetrated for criminal gain. For example, in Singapore, names of high-profile figures were used by scammers to trick people to invest in dubious cryptocurrency. Such cases highlight the emergence of a nexus between fake news and crime, for which there is scant literature. To enhance current understanding about this growing concern, this chapter examines 32 crime-fake news incidents in Singapore from 2013 to 2018. Based on a descriptive analysis of these cases, this chapter aims to answer the following questions: (1) What are the types of crime-fake news in Singapore? (2) What is the impact that it has in Singapore? (3) Who are these fake news creators and what motivates them? (4) What are the popular methods of transmitting crime-fake news? and (5) Who responds to the crime-fake news? In addition, implications in the areas of public education and crime prevention will be discussed.

Escape games are an increasingly popular leisure activity involving a group of players completing tasks to achieve a pre-defined goal, which is usually escaping from a room. In this chapter, I briefly outline the educational potential of escape game activities in language classes within the frameworks of gamification, pervasive learning, and ‘serious games’, and in relation to transferable skills. This is followed by a description and evaluation of an escape game I developed for a grammar class on the idiomatic uses of German modal verbs. This was piloted with a first-year undergraduate class at Lancaster University. I conclude by discussing student feedback and considerations for similar activities in the future.

Abstract:
This paper introduces the three-axis attitude control of the ESAT platform. ESAT is a modular nanosatellite that implements the popular 10x10x10 cm CubeSat standard, designed for hands-on learning at different educational levels as well as professional training. ESAT features the full set of characteristic spacecraft subsystems (power, on-board data handling, attitude control, communications, and payload). The satellite can be disassembled to focus on each subsystem, one at a time, or used all together, and features a flexible ground segment. Courses using the ESAT platform are imparted in our university, as part of the last year of the master’s degree in Aerospace engineering, and in other institutions like the ESA Academy. They cover aspects ranging from subsystems design to testing and spacecraft operations. In addition, the platform is used in master’s thesis and research activities. Although the version that is currently being used in the courses allows only one-axis attitude control, the ESAT is in continuous development and two prototypes of the satellite have already been developed that allow three-axis control based on reaction wheels and/or magnetorquers, which is essential for the testing and verification of attitude determination and control algorithms. For this purpose, the ground support equipment has also been updated to be able to carry out the turns in three axes, with the development of new testbeds and a complete magnetic field simulator. The present work aims to show the new three-axis platform designs and its main functionalities

The Solar-Terrestrial Centre of Excellence brings together and supports sun-space-earth research and services present at the federal level in Belgium. In 2019, the STCE was a founding member of a European network, PECASUS, that provides space weather services for civil aviation. Our expertise in solar observations and research combined with the experience of our Global Navigation Satellite System and solar particle radiation group proved to be crucial. The STCE also strongly invests in education and training as these are a backbone of quality research and services, and therefore created the Space Weather Education Centre. This centre offers the Space Weather Introductory Course covering the Sun, solar storms, heliosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere, instruments and methods to observe solar and space weather activity, as well as reading and interpreting our space weather bulletins. This course is taught to future space weather advisory staff, both military and civilian. It is based upon the STCE’s expertise gained through scientific research, involvement in space missions and space weather monitoring, and on its forecasting capabilities. The course is given by qualified staff. In addition to the Space Weather Introductory Course, the STCE has been and remains involved in a wide range of outreach activities, from public lectures, over dedicated classes and workshops at schools, organization of public events like open doors, publications in popular journals and on online media, scientific newsletters and press releases, to the participation in science festivals and the organization of events for the scientific community. In this paper, we present more details of our educational programme, reflect on the methodologies used, and provide an overview of the obtained results

Abstract:
Small satellites are becoming increasingly popular in several applications, in which attitude systems might require high precision performance. These spacecrafts are susceptible to magnetic disturbances in orbit, such as the interaction between the satellite and Earth’s magnetic field. However, a major disturbance torque is generated by the residual magnetic moment. Therefore, a magnetic cleanliness analysis must be considered in order to meet the requirements for magnetic-sensitive instruments and subsystems. Studies on magnetic environment management are underway for the FORESAIL-1 and FORESAIL-2 missions using the optical magnetic test bed of Aalto University. This is particularly important for FORESAIL-2 which aims to precisely measure the orbital ambient magnetic field with a high sensitivity magnetometer One of the parts of a spacecraft magnetic cleanliness analysis is the modelling of the residual magnetic moment as a set of magnetic dipoles. The dipoles are estimated from the measured magnetic field surrounded by the device-under-test (e.g., complete satellite, or its individual subsystems) using a stochastic estimation algorithm. The measurements are performed in a Helmholtz cage where the device and a low-noise magnetometer are placed, and detected by a smart camera using visual detection markers (ArUco). Information provided by the detection of the markers is then used for representing the position of the magnetometer and measured magnetic field points in the device-under-test coordinate frame. The camera detection accuracy is improved with data fusion from several ArUco markers, and the system performance is assessed by verifying the estimated magnetic moment results using known permanent magnets. Using this methodology for calculating the residual magnetic moment, the system is able to estimate the dipole’s position and magnetic vectors with a mean absolute error of 0.004 ± 9·10-7 m and 0.007 ± 1·10-4 A·m2 respectively. The test bed can be used for the characterization of the magnetic moment when measuring small satellites, or its components, in order to mitigate the residual magnetic moment.

Abstract:
In understanding the impact of logistics functions and processes as an important source of competitive advantage and on the survival of manufacturing industries in both global and local market, the level of awareness of logistics activities must be conducted. Therefore, this study focused on assessing the level of awareness of logistics activities in Nigerian manufacturing industries. A field survey with a well-structured and self-administered instrument of information collection were used to get necessary information from the respondents. One hundred and fifty manufacturing industries were selected intentionally to represent the best state of logistics activities awareness within Nigerian manufacturing industries. The findings revealed that the total average awareness level of logistics activities within the Nigerian manufacturing industries is average. Also, transport logistics is the most popular form of logistics activities in Nigeria, followed by warehouse/distribution logistics, domestic logistics, after-sales logistics, and procurement logistics. The findings also revealed that fourth party logistics and green logistics are the least popular logistics activities in Nigeria. This is due to the lack of new and effective information flow in their logistics management processes. The study therefore recommends that stakeholders in the Nigerian logistics industry, business owners and manufacturing industries should adopt one or more forms of logistics functions in their core business activities to aid sustainability, competitive advantage, performance, and economic growth.

Abstract:
The article talks about the philosophical foundations that characterize the mechanism of internal inducement to action. As an academic, constitutional, and socio-ideological concept, the boundaries of freedom are outlined, which are displayed in the field of modern media space. The term «freedom» is considered as several philosophical concepts that formed the basis of the modern interpretation of this concept. The totality of its meanings is generalized into one that is adapted for the modern system. Parallels are drawn between the interaction of the concept of user freedom with the plane of domestic mass media because despite, the fact that consciousness is knowledge, the incoming information directly affects the individual and collective consciousness. Using the example of the most popular digital platforms, the components of the impact on users and the legal aspect of their implementation are analyzed. When considering the issues of freedom of choice and freedom of action on the Internet, special attention is paid to methods of collecting and processing information, in particular, the limitations and possibilities of digital programs-algorithms of the popular search engine Google. The types of personal information collected by Google about the user are classified and the possible mechanisms of influence on personal choice and access to information on the Internet are characterized. The article analyzes the constitutional guarantees of freedom and the impact of digital technologies on them. Particular attention is paid to ethics, in particular journalistic, which nominally regulates the limits of the humane, permissible, a / moral (unacceptable/acceptable) in the implementation of professional information activities in the media. Thus, the issue of freedom of choice and freedom of action in the plane of domestic mass media is subject to an objective examination of its components, they are analyzed for a proper constitutionally suitable phenomenon, which must be investigated from the point of view of compliance with human rights and freedoms and professional standards within the media.

Abstract:
A growing number of countries are committed toreduce their carbon emissions and are transitioning towards renewable and clean energy sources, leading to an in crease in demand formetals and minerals. This is especially the case for a short list of what are called "critical minerals" which are considered essential to economic development, including the transition to a low-carbon economy and national security. There liability of their supply chain raises concerns considering geological scarcity, difficulty to extract and/or political factors influencing their availability. At the same time, public awareness and perception of geoscience are eroding and there is more and more reluctance towards mining projects, even from traditionally favourable communities. To face this challenge, promote public interest and outline the contribution of geological science to society, geoscientists of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC-Québec) have designed and put together a portable display that includes a suite of mineral and metal samples considered critical for the sustainable success of Canada's transition towards a clean and digital economy. The display is a user-friendly toolkit that can be used by any GSC geoscientists during outreach activities, in classrooms as well as during public open houses. It comes with straightforward pedagogic material and content, along with presentation scenarios. To broaden and adapt the workshops to specific expectations, additional toolkits were developed and all are contained within easy to carry travel cases. These cover a variety of topics and can be presented as stand-alone displays or be used complementary to one another. For example, the "Mines and minerals" collection may serve as a supplement to the "Critical minerals" display to present every day objects in which minerals are used as well as ores amples from active mines to illustrate the intertwining between mining activities and our everyday lives. Another display covers the ever-popular fossils thematic with the "Sedimentary rocks and fossils" collection and gives an opportunity to address key geoscience themes such as life evolution and biological crisis along with groundwater reservoirs and resources. The "Magmatic rocks" display touches on the formation of rocks from magmas, the different types and active processes of volcanoes, and discusses the risks and benefits related to volcanic activity. Hopefully, these four ready-to-use portable displays will encourage more GSC geoscientists to engage in public oriented activities to make geosciences more accessible, change perceptions and offer an overall tangible scientific experience for people.

Abstract:
The main objectives of this study are to investigate the trends in primary pavement materials’ unit price over time and to develop statistical models and guidelines for using predictive unit prices of pavement materials instead of uniform unit prices in life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) for future maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) projects. Various socio-economic data were collected for the past 20 years (1997–2018) in California, including oil price, population, government expenditure in transportation, vehicle registration, and other key variables, in order to identify factors affecting pavement materials’ unit price. Additionally, the unit price records of the popular pavement materials were categorized by project size (small, medium, large, and extra-large). The critical variables were chosen after identifying their correlations, and the future values of each variable were predicted through time-series analysis. Multiple regression models using selected socio-economic variables were developed to predict the future values of pavement materials’ unit price. A case study was used to compare the results between the uniform unit prices in the current LCCA procedures and the unit prices predicted in this study. In LCCA, long-term prediction involves uncertainties due to unexpected economic trends and industrial demand and supply conditions. Economic recessions and a global pandemic are examples of unexpected events which can have a significant influence on variations in material unit prices and project costs. Nevertheless, the data-driven scientific approach as described in this research reduces risk caused by such uncertainties and enables reasonable predictions for the future. The statistical models developed to predict the future unit prices of the pavement materials through this research can be implemented to enhance the current LCCA procedure and predict more realistic unit prices and project costs for the future M&R activities, thus promoting the most cost-effective alternative in LCCA.

Watkins, Chris B., Susan Lurie, Amnon Lers, and Patricia L. Conklin. Involvement of Antioxidant Enzymes and Genes in the Resistance Mechanism to Postharvest Superficial Scald Development. United States Department of Agriculture, December 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2004.7586539.bard.

Abstract:
The objective of this research project was to evaluate the involvement of antioxidant enzymes and genes in the resistance mechanism to postharvest superficial scald development using two primary systems: 1. Resistant and susceptible progenies of an apple cross between a scald resistant crab apple, ‘White Angel’ and a scald susceptible cultivar, ‘Rome Beauty’; 2. Heat-treatment of ‘Granny Smith’, which is known to reduce scald development in this cultivar. In 2002 we asked for, and received (October 14), permission to revise our initial objectives. The US side decided to expand their results to include further work using commercial cultivars. Also, both sides wanted to include an emphasis on the interaction between these antioxidant enzymes and the á-farnesene pathway, with the cooperation of a third party, Dr. Bruce Whitaker, USDA-ARS, Beltsville. Background: Superficial scald is a physiological storage disorder that causes damage to the skin of apple and pear fruit. It is currently controlled by use of an antioxidant, diphenylamine (DPA), applied postharvest by drenching or dips, but concern exists about such chemical usage especially as it also involves application of fungicides. As a result, there has been increased emphasis on understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in disorder development. Our approach was to focus on the oxidative processes that occur during scald development, and specifically on using the two model systems described above to determine if the levels of specific antioxidants and/or antioxidant enzyme activities correlated with the presence/absence of scald. It was hoped that information about the role of antioxidant-defense mechanisms would lead to identification of candidate genes for future transgenic manipulation. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: Collectively, our results highlight the complexity of superficial scald developmental processes. Studies involving comparisons of antioxidant enzyme activities in different crab apple selection, commercial cultivars, and in response to postharvest heat and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatments, show no simple direct relationships with antioxidant contents and susceptibility of fruit to scald development. However, a correlative relationship was found between POX activity or isoenzyme number and scald resistance in most of the studies. This relationship, if confirmed, could be exploited in breeding for scald resistance. In addition, our investigations with key genes in the á-farnesenebiosynthetic pathway, together with antioxidant processes, are being followed up by analysis of exposed and shaded sides of fruit of cultivars that show different degrees of scald control by 1-MCP. These data may further reveal productive areas for future research that will lead to long term control of the disorder. However, given the complexity of scald development, the greatest research need is the production of transgenic fruit with down-regulated genes involved in á- farnesene biosynthesis in order to test the currently popular hypothesis for scald development.

Abstract:
This US Army Corps of Engineers, Regional Sediment Management, technical note describes a geodatabase of federal coastal and inland navigation projects developed to determine the extent to which RSM goals have been implemented across the USACE at the project and district levels. The effort 1) quantified the volume of sediment dredged from federal navigation channels by both contract and USACE-owned dredges and 2) identified the placement type and whether sediment was placed beneficially. The majority of the dredging data used to populate the geodatabase were based on the USACE Dredging Information System DIS database, but when available, the geodatabase was expanded to include more detailed USACE district-specific data that were not included in the DIS database. Two datasets were developed in this study: the National Dataset and the District-Specific and Quality-Checked Dataset. The National Dataset is based on statistics extracted from the combined DIS Contract and Government Plant data. This database is a largely unedited database that combined two available USACE datasets. Due to varying degrees of data completeness in these two datasets, this study undertook a data refinement process to improve the information. This was done through interviews with the districts, literature search, and the inclusion of additional district-specific data provided by individual districts that often represent more detailed information on dredging activities. The District-Specific and Quality-Checked Database represents a customized database generated by this study. An interactive web-based tool was developed that accesses both datasets and displays them on a national map that can be viewed at the district or project scale.
