Mejía Pavony, Germán Rodrigo. Después de la heroica fase de exploración. La historiografía urbana en América Latina. Edited by Gerardo Martínez Delgado. Universidad de Guanajuato / Pontificia Universidad Javeriana / FLACSO Ecuador, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46546/2021-17.

Full text
Abstract:

Epstein, William M. Generations of Hope Communities. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190467067.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 7 describes, evaluates, and reinterprets the social service program Generations of Hope as a ceremony of social values rather than as a successful response to a social problem. The program is intended to improve child foster care by providing a communal setting for usually poor youths without families. The evaluations of its outcomes is largely based on staff efforts that defy customary social science methods. Generations of Hope is an instance in the long, unfortunate romantic tradition of social service that rejects objective coherence in mistaking obedience to social values—cultural symbolism—as program effectiveness. The program expresses the heroic beliefs of the culture in the power of individual will, the triumph of self-discipline, and brilliant insight, which, against all odds, achieve monumental outcomes with few resources. The program provides no credible evidence of its success.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 describes, evaluates, and reinterprets the private sector social service program Year Up as a ceremony of social values rather than as a successful response to a social problem. The program is intended to provide poor minority urban youths access to the job market by offering short-term academic and skills training. Its claims to success are based on contracted evaluations that are not credible. In the end, Year Up embodies a mythic obligation to affirm heroic individualism as the essence of civic virtue and personal value. Year Up mandates that participants embark on the quest for authenticity through mentoring and training en route to employment. Yet the myth of Year Up defines one of its most enduring attractions. It is inexpensive and highly selective, in the end a very efficient way to certify the nation’s chosenness without disrupting customary social arrangements, without redefining the relationship among people, and notably without transferring great amounts of assets and income to those in need.

Abstract:
Although the reconciliation of Jewish and Polish memories of the Holocaust is the central issue in contemporary Polish–Jewish relations, this is the first attempt to examine these divisive memories in a comprehensive way. Until 1989, Polish consciousness of the Second World War subsumed the destruction of Polish Jewry within a communist narrative of Polish martyrdom and heroism. Post-war Jewish memory, by contrast, has been concerned mostly with Jewish martyrdom and heroism. Since the 1980s, however, a significant number of Jews and Poles have sought to identify a common ground and have met with partial but increasing success, notwithstanding the new debates that have emerged in recent years concerning Polish behaviour during the Nazi genocide of the Jews that Poles had ignored for half a century. This volume considers these contentious issues from different angles. Among the topics covered are Jewish memorial projects, both in Poland and beyond its borders, the Polish approach to Holocaust memory under communist rule, and post-communist efforts both to retrieve the Jewish dimension to Polish wartime memory and to reckon with the dark side of the Polish national past. An interview with Henryk Grynberg touches on many of these issues, as do the three poems by Grynberg reproduced here. The 'New Views' section features innovative research in other areas of Polish–Jewish studies. A special section is devoted to research concerning the New Synagogue in Poznan, built in 1907, which is still standing only because the Nazis turned it into a swimming pool.

Abstract:
Assim, a trama segue…

Johnson, Claudia Durst. Understanding To Kill a Mockingbird. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216030034.

Full text
Abstract:
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel of such profound power that it has affected the lives of readers and left and indelible mark on American culture. This rich collection of historical documents, collateral readings, and commentary captures the essence of the novel's impact, making it an ideal resource for students, teachers, and library media specialists. Drawing on multi-disciplinary sources, the casebook places the issues of race, censorship, stereotyping, and heroism into sharp perspective. Through these documents, the reader also gains a taste for the historical events which influenced the novel as well as the novel's relevance in today's world. Among the documents which speak most eloquently are testimony from the Scottsboro Case of the 1930s, memoirs and interviews with African Americans and whites who grew up in Alabama in the 1930s, and news stories on civil rights activities in Alabama in the 1950s. Most of the documents presented are available in no other printed form. Study questions, project ideas, and bibliographies are also included for ease of use in further examination of the issues raised by the novel. Thirteen historical photographs complement the text. Following a literary analysis of issues raised by the novel, the casebook opens with testimony and newspaper articles from the 1930s Alabama Scottsboro Case. The significant parallels of this case to the novel paint a social and historical background of the novel. Memoirs and interviews with African Americans and whites who grew up in Alabama in the 1930s further complete the historical landscape. Articles and news stories from the 1950s depict the increasingly tense, volatile environment in which the novel was written and published. Documents examine the stereotypes of the poor white, the African American, and the southern belle; and how the novel allows the reader to walk around in the shoes of those who have been stereotyped. More current articles examine the legal, literary, and ethical ramifications of the novel. These articles include a debate between lawyers over whether Atticus Finch was a hero, and discussion of attempts to censor the novel.
