Vo, Minh Toàn. "Assessment of heat pump operating faults coupled with building energy simulation using Petri net model." Thesis, La Rochelle, 2021. https://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-03685404.
Full textHeat pumps give an efficient and sustainable solution for both heating and cooling. However, these systems sometimes operate with a lower efficiency, because of the faults. In this research, we focus on three operating faults : refrigerant leakage, condenser fouling, and evaporator fouling. They are the most frequent and most impacted operating faults. They evolve undetectably over time until they start to create the energy and comfort problems. We propose to develop a method to model these operating faults and to associate them with a building simulation model. In the first place, we developed physical models of an air-to-air residential heat pump in order to predict the coefficient of performance (COP/EER) of the heat pump, as a function of the use intensity, and operating fault. Then, a Petri net model was proposed to determine a priori structure of fault evolution. In the second step, we apply a notion of uncertainty of fault database to take into account different working cases and generalize the fault occurrence model. We associated it with the dynamic energy simulation tool COMETh, a building simulation model developed by CSTB, to simulate the annual energy consumption. This method helps us to analyze and determine the global uncertainty of fault impacts on the heat pump performance and on the whole energy consumption of the building. The method was applied to a case study of residential building in Paris over 15 years. With three heat pump operating faults, the building consumption remarkably increased from the third year. At the 15th year, the building consumption is double than the standard value. The results underline the possibility of the proposed methodology

Full textThe improvement of energy efficiency in the industry is essential in achieving the objective of mitigation of greenhouse gases. In the agro food process industry, lukewarm effluents are rejected to drain. Recovering heat from these effluents by using preheating exchangers and heat pumps (HP) allows providing heat at higher temperature levels (like cleaning solutions and hot sanitary water) and replacing boilers. These needs may concern batch and semi-batch processes. Storage tanks are therefore used together with heat pumps. The optimization of heat pumps and storage tanks sizes is a multi-objective method. This method is based on a thermodynamic criterion (calculating the exergy destruction in the system) and an economic criterion (calculating the payback period, the cost of investment and the operating cost, and integrating the environmental impact). The dynamic exergy analysis shows that using two separated storage tanks (variable volume and uniform temperature tanks) is better than one tank (constant volume stratified storage tank). On the other hand, a multi-criteria method is used to design heat pumps in order to maximize its performances. It allows designing optimal mixtures of refrigerants. These choices are validated experimentally with a heat pump prototype. Finally, the economic and environmental gains obtained with the heat pump compared to a fuel boiler are quantified for all heat demands

Full textThe accurate evaluation of performance of ground coupled heat pump systems is a key factor for a broader exploitation of this technology among other various available systems for heating, cooling and domestic hot water production. Although there exist methods allowing to assess the efficiency of the heat pump itself in nominal conditions, the extrapolation to annual performances of the global system composed of the heat pump itself, the building, the ground heat exchanger, the climate and the associated controller, remains quite approximative. In order to take into account dynamic effects that are inherent to such a system, the objective of the thesis is to present a new methodology for the evaluation of performance of ground coupled heat pump systems, based on the emulation technique. The latter allows to integrate a real heat pump in a simulated environment that offers multiple system configurations. First, a state of the art of the existing methods is realized. Then the ground heat exchanger modelling is dealt with through a litterature review of existing models, the development of a new model and its experimental comparison. Finally, the principle of the developed methodology is presented and a first application is performed on an adapted test bench

Full textThis work concerns an experimental study and modelling of an air/water beat pump using carbon dioxide as a working fluid. The experimental study is carried out on an instrumented test setup (pressure, temperature, flow end power measurements) to characterize the operation of this type of installation in static and dynamic mode. The static model was developed an validated. It allows to determine the optimal conditions of operation for various external conditions. Thus, a simplified law governing the optimal high pressure according to the gas cooler outlet temperature is deduced from the calculations. The dynamic model is based on the equations of mass and energy conservation. It takes into account the thermal inertia on the compressor, the exchanger' s walls, the refrigerant (carbon dioxide) and the coolant (water). Comparison between modelling results and those obtained with the test stand gives a good agreement. Thanks to this model, it is possible to record the operating variables versus time and space after changing the input parameters such as sources temperatures, expansion valve opening and compressor rotating speed. In particular, we notice a good representation of starting process with a transition from subcritical to transcritical cycle

Full textThe mechanical vapour compression high temperature heat pump for industry using electricity is one of the most effective innovative technologies to recover the industrial waste heat at low and medium temperature (<90°C). However, given the current industrial heat needs, the heat pump target temperature levels remain too low and slow strongly its implantation. Overwhelmingly, the drying processes reject saturated moist air at middle temperature (50°C-90°C) and have heat needs at very high temperature (110°C-150°C). The large temperature difference between the source and the heat need and the level off temperature that is needed, today, makes the heat pump integration in such processes an interesting energy and technological challenge, whose economic stake is considerable. The present works tackle, with a generic methodology of thermodynamic optimisation cycles based on the entropy minimization in the heat exchangers, to identify the most efficiency heat pump architectures from an energy point of view. The theoretical analysis allowed to detect the transcritical heat pump architecture, in conditions of high temperature glides between the inlet and the outlet of the heat need. The development of a transcritical high temperature heat pump demonstrator using the R32 as working fluid allowed to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a heat pump that can reach the target temperature of 120°C from 60°C with an available heat source at 50°C, and to demonstrate its high energy efficiency (COP = 4)

Full textHeat pumps are a key system for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in buildings. Their performances depend on many factors that cannot always be predicted, therefore in-situ measurement is necessary to know the real performances of each equipment. A previously developed method is presented and validated. It is able to measure accurately the heating power in steady-state for superheated vapour compression. However, it is not functional for transitory state and for two-phase suction. Thus, complementary methods are studied and evaluated to extend the performance measurement to these cases. A complete method is then suggested, allowing a better consideration of wet compression cycles and transitory operation in seasonal performance assessment

Full textExergy analysis is a systematic application of the two fundamental laws of Thermodynamics (the second law in particular) to energy analysis and optimization of industrial processes and systems. It is a precious tool which allows the consideration of energy Quality and the determination of a system's critical points where an energy improvement can be made. One of the applications of this methodology, resulting from the Theorem of Equipartition of Entropy Production, is called the Diabatic Distillation which consists in distributing, as uniformly as possible, the exergy losses of a distillation column in order to reduce them to a minimum. Diabatic Distillation can be applied to all processes and in particular to Absorption Heat Pumps technology where a diabatic separator, and eventually its complement (a mixer) will allow for a considerable increase of the energy yield and the scope of application

Full text[A water-water heat pump station with a laboratory set digital expansion valve has been conceived in order to study the improvement of the machine's operation. The goal of this experimental study is to characterize such an expansion valve, to analyse its influence on heat pump performance and to drive a comparative study with a thermostatic expansion valve. The gains obtained with the digital expansion valve become significant in variable mode far from the nominal operation point. Moreover, it shows that, at orifices with large section, the fluid flow could be critical, which limits the mass. Flow rate. The modelling of the fluid two phases expansion has been developed for permanent operation made and in one-dimension in order to size the orifices of the expansion valve and to predict critical conditions. Each phase is taken in charge separately and the mass, momentum and energy transfers at the liquid-vapour interface are calculated by means of. Theoretical laws:established from the modelling of interaction forces and heat fluxes between phases with respect to the various flow configurations. This model allows the treatment of flows with bubbles, droplets, or annular or stratified flows. The identification of the various configurations is realized by mean so Taitel and Dukler method which defines the criteria of transition from one configuration to another. ]

Full textDynamic modeling of vapour compression chillers or heat pumps was initiated thirty years ago. The main goals are the reduction of energy consumption and money savings through improved control strategy. Suction of liquid at the inlet of the compressors can cause great damage. Therefore, numerical simulation can provide a major help, in this field of investigation. The specificity of the work presented in this thesis is to take into account the mechanical inertia of the fluid in the non-stationary form of the momentum balance and to chose density and internal specific energy as main variables of state. Thermodynamic and transport properties, used in the calculations of pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients are thus derived from this couple of state variables, calculated from the integration of the mass and energy equations applied to each control volume. The machine that has been studied comprises two centrifugal compresseurs, a subcooler intermediate heat exchanger and an evaporator fed thanks to two electronic valves. The ducts between the main components are also taken into account. The simulations allow to conceive and validate the control system and can help understand its behavior when faced to quick changes of its external variables (compressor speed, sources mass flow rates and temperatures). The model show the steady-state or transient conditions that lead to liquid suction in the compressors and help give ways of improving its control

Full textHeating and domestic hot water production represent more than 80% of the energy consumption of the residential sector in France. The rehabilitation is of great potential. The replacement of old boilers by air-to-water heat pumps constitutes one of the most effective solutions, which leads to a major reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The constraints limiting the operation of usual heat pumps have been identified. A new concept of air-to-water versatile heat pump (single-stage / 2-stage) has been developed. The principal functions of this new concept are: heating and cooling, operation without additional electric heat supply, production of domestic hot water in summer and in winter, and capacity control by the compression architecture. The principal results obtained are: Compared to a usual heat pump, the new concept allows an energy saving up to 34. 5 % and a reduction of the CO2 emissions up to 24 % depending on the climatic conditions and the hydronic heating distributor system; With the rise of gas and fuel prices, the new concept can compete on total cost conventional solutions for heating with efficient boilers. The CO2 emissions can be reduced by at least a factor 4 compared to fioul or gas-fired boilers. The seasonal COP can be further increased by a better optimisation of both the frosting/defrosting cycles and the combined production of heat and domestic hot water, as well as the replacement of the compressors by more efficient ones
