Full textThe accurate evaluation of performance of ground coupled heat pump systems is a key factor for a broader exploitation of this technology among other various available systems for heating, cooling and domestic hot water production. Although there exist methods allowing to assess the efficiency of the heat pump itself in nominal conditions, the extrapolation to annual performances of the global system composed of the heat pump itself, the building, the ground heat exchanger, the climate and the associated controller, remains quite approximative. In order to take into account dynamic effects that are inherent to such a system, the objective of the thesis is to present a new methodology for the evaluation of performance of ground coupled heat pump systems, based on the emulation technique. The latter allows to integrate a real heat pump in a simulated environment that offers multiple system configurations. First, a state of the art of the existing methods is realized. Then the ground heat exchanger modelling is dealt with through a litterature review of existing models, the development of a new model and its experimental comparison. Finally, the principle of the developed methodology is presented and a first application is performed on an adapted test bench

Full textThe inreasing use of geothermal heat pumps on the French territory represents an important reduction potential of greenhouse gases emissions. To encourage this trend, it is necessary to accurately assess the annual performances of geothermal heat pumps in comparison with the other existing heating systems. In such a context, this thesis aims to establish a precise and functional model for calculating the annual energy performances of geothermal heat pumps with horizontal or vertical ground heat exchangers. After a literature review of horizontal and vertical ground heat exchangers models, the geothermal borehole models more adapted to dynamic simulations are identified and their validity ranges are reported. Concerning the horizontal ground heat exchangers, we could not find any suitable model for our purposes. A semi-analytical model, is then developed in two versions for two different time ranges of heat exchanges. To evaluate the model, an experimental set-up, equipped with an innovative device permitting a distributed temperature measurement by optical fibers is installed. A validation test elaborated and applied on the horizontal ground heat exchanger model allows to confirm its relevance. Finally, a calculation method of the seasonal performance factor is developed for heat pumps equipped with horizontal or vertical ground heat exchangers. The application of this method to a typical residential building in the climate of Orléans gives promising results

Full textWith the recent development of innovative controllers for the building, there is a need to develop a testing method that is fast, reproducible and realistic. The method developed in this study aims to estimate the annual performance of ground source heat pump (GSHP) controllers in only a few days of test. Based on emulation techniques already used for GSHP and solar combined systems, the test immerses the controller and a real GSHP in a simulated environement that is calibrated with in-situ data. Each day of test represents a typical day of the month. The development of the method consists in determining the optimal typical days that ensure an accurate estimation of annual performance. The method is then experimentally tested on the semi-virtual test bench for the comparison of a predictive controller and a conventionnal controller over an entire heating season. To develop the method, a predictive controller for GSHP is elaborated. The controller is based on artificial neural networks used for the prediction of weather data and indoor temperature. A new module for the prediction of floor heating and boreholes fluid temperatures is also proposed. The predictive controller is tested by simulation over a heating season for various climates and types of single family house. According to the reference case, the energy savings vary between 6% and 15%

Full textThe use of shallow groundwater as heat source for heat pump is very coveted for air-conditioning of building or industrial facilities. Their intensive use during many years combined with the redeployment of the geothermal industry these last years, raise concerns about the safeguarding of the water resources. In such a context, the present study aims to evaluate the impact of local variations of temperature on the physicochemical and microbiological quality of groundwater systems on the basis of (I) field investigation and, (II) experiments on a pilot (named BIOTHERMEX) making it possible to reproduce, in perfectly supervised conditions, the effect of the propagation of a thermal plume in a reduced aquifer model. Within the temperature recorded on site, principal outcomes showed that thermal impacts are confined in the immediate vicinity of the installation, and were able to deteriorate, up to about ten degrees, the stenothermy of the groundwater systems. The evolution of the physicochemical parameters did not reveal any significant disturbances over the monitoring period, this being also predicted by hydrogeochemical modeling. On the other hand, a significant influence was raised about some microbiological indicators-descriptors (namely activity, diversity of the total microflora). Lastly, the experiments undertaken on the laboratory scale made it possible to finely apprehend the reactional behavior of the system and to define a critical temperature of re-injection beyond which, potential disorders are expected

Full textThe urbanisation process in China brings a high pressure on the environment. The highest potential to reduce these impacts corresponds to decisions made during the building’s design phase, which can be supported by numerical simulation. This thesis is dedicated to the study of three boundary conditions related to the energy and environmental performance evaluation of buildings in China: - The ground: a ground coupled heat pump model is proposed integrating a fast calculation ground heat exchanger model for a large-scale boreholes field. This model can be used to improve the energy performance of the system in the design and operation phases. - The microclimate: a site-specific weather file generation method which can provide local hourly air temperature is proposed, accounting for the urban heat island effect. The effects of the microclimate on the building’s energy performance are quantitatively investigated. - The background system for life cycle assessment: the effects of the spatial and temporal variation of the electricity production mix in China on the environmental impacts are investigated. The environmental database is adapted to the Chinese national and local context. The results show that the environmental impacts of buildings could be more reasonably evaluated by considering these three boundary conditions

Full textThis thesis presents a detailed review of the conventional and renewable energy statuses, in Lebanon, as well as of the principal problems facing the electricity of Lebanon Company (EDL). Besides, future electricity generation plan-scenarios for Lebanon are investigated, where multi variables are examined and optimized, namely: cost, environment and tariff. Results reveal that the investment in wind energy and natural gas for power production should be a main concern in the future. In addition, a comprehensive review of different domestic water heating systems is developed, where principal conclusions reveal that heat pump water heaters and solar water heating systems are recommended to be used. Accordingly, a general road map that controls the choice of a water heating system for domestic use from energetic and environmental points of view is developed. Moreover, dynamic simulation model of an air source heat pump water heater is presented and validated. This model is then used to assess the system performance in the Lebanese context, investigate a proposed optimal management model and study the effect of using mini-tubes condensers. Furthermore, a domestic hybrid water heating system is proposed and modeled dynamically. The system is composed of a flat-plate solar collector, air-source/geothermal heat pump water heater, a wind turbine, a battery and a hot water storage tank. Simulations are carried out for typical days of winter and summer of two Lebanese locations, Beirut and Cedars. In addition, an energetic-economic optimal management model is suggested for the proposed hybrid system and applied to the investigated case studies, where reliable results are obtained

Full textIn North America, space heating, hot water, and air conditioning use more secondary energy thanany other activity within buildings, thus emitting the majority of scope 1 and scope 2 GreenhouseGases (GHG). The Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) uses one-third the energy of traditionaltechnologies to provide space conditioning and hot water services. While GSHP is a well-established technology, the energy savings and lower GHG emissionshave not translated into their widespread adoption. Public policy measures and financialincentives adopted to promote GSHP have failed to lead to broad adoption or lower costs. Thisthesis examines the adoption of GSHP in response to supportive policies among residential, institutional, and city-scale adopters.Detailed site-level and panel data permit natural experiments on the response of residentialadopters in Canada and the US to changing incentives. At higher scales, regulatory proceedingsconcerning the offering of Thermal Energy Services (TES) has provided a case study for analysisof utility models to finance GSHP for commercial and institutional clients. In Canada and the US, financial incentives failed to sustain the adoption of GSHP throughout orafter the period of subsidy among residential households. Neither did incentives lead to adecrease in price over time. Free-ridership problems in Canada and an inability to make inroadsto areas served by natural gas have stranded GSHP technology. Further, the capital cost ofGSHP results in a higher lifecycle cost than most alternatives. The economy-wide benefits offinancial incentives for GSHP are limited in Canada, where most heat pumps are imported.iiiTES provide compelling innovations to bridge barriers at higher scales. TES overcome balancesheet constraints on debt common to public sector organizations by financing capital equipmentand renovations as utility payments. TES can overcome capital constraints faced by developersby financing equipment inside the building lowering construction costs. However, our casestudy of public procurement reveals TES to be a costly approach in the long run. The insightsfrom this research are translated into best practices and policy advice to improve contracting, increase awareness, and align incentives for greater efficiency

Full textThis works deals with evaporation of refrigerants inside of a tube. It breaks down into two parts: one part of experimental analysis and a numerical part. An experimental test bench was designed to test the evaporation of refrigerants. The R134a and R407c refrigerants are tested. The heat exchange is characterized locally in a test tube of 1m length. We show that when the refrigerant flowrate increases, the heat exchange is improved. This phenomenon is explained by the refrigerant flow map which depends on the mass flow. It has been studied for both refrigerants. We studied the influence of the structure of the inner wall of the tube on the heat exchange. Several tubes were tested and compared. Correlations are established to predict the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop for the evaporation of the two fluids inside each tube. A comparison of the performance of two the refrigerants was performed: heat transfer intensification, pressure drop and the evaporation length are studied. Finally, a numerical model is designed to predict the characteristics of the evaporation inside a tube heated by a hydraulic system. The variation of the refrigerant saturation temperature and the decrease of the water heating temperature are taken into account. The resolution is made by combining the equations of the momentum, mass and heat conservation

Full textThe introduction of intermittent renewable energies, the implementation of a thermal regulation, which decreases heating needs of a factor between 5 and 10, causes a redesign of heating systems integrating energy efficiency and the cut-off of domestic equipments during peak hours. This thesis involves the study and design of a heat pump incorporating a latent thermal storage in its condenser. This storage will allow a cut-off during at least two hours. The heating needs of a low-energy consumption house (BBC) have been estimated as well as the heat amount to be stored so as to ensure such a cut-off. A study on the phase-change phenomenon and the PCM has been carried out in order to select suitable materials for this application. A dynamic model of the phase change was also developed. Four candidate materials were selected and analyzed by tuned Differential Scaning Calorimetry (DSC) with adjustment by the inverse method. Several storing-exchanger structures have been proposed, simulated, and optimized; two of them have been realized. Both heat exchangers have been tested alone and then integrated into a heat pump system. The final generation gave very promising results for the development of an efficient heat pump with storage. Finally, the heat storage effect has been evaluated in terms of energy efficiency and CO2 emissions. This heat pump presents potential improvement of the seasonal COP between 20% and 30% compared to air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps because of the smart monitoring of the energy storage/delivery due to the heat pump operation during the most favorable hours of the day and by avoiding short cycles operation corresponding to low heating needs

Full textThis work concerns an experimental study and modelling of an air/water beat pump using carbon dioxide as a working fluid. The experimental study is carried out on an instrumented test setup (pressure, temperature, flow end power measurements) to characterize the operation of this type of installation in static and dynamic mode. The static model was developed an validated. It allows to determine the optimal conditions of operation for various external conditions. Thus, a simplified law governing the optimal high pressure according to the gas cooler outlet temperature is deduced from the calculations. The dynamic model is based on the equations of mass and energy conservation. It takes into account the thermal inertia on the compressor, the exchanger' s walls, the refrigerant (carbon dioxide) and the coolant (water). Comparison between modelling results and those obtained with the test stand gives a good agreement. Thanks to this model, it is possible to record the operating variables versus time and space after changing the input parameters such as sources temperatures, expansion valve opening and compressor rotating speed. In particular, we notice a good representation of starting process with a transition from subcritical to transcritical cycle

Full textA consortium of ten partners, led by “FONROCHE Géothermie”, works on the FONGEOSEC project, an “Investissement d’Avenir” organized by the French Agency for Environment and Energy (ADEME). The aim of this project is to design and create an innovative demonstrator of a high-energy geothermal power plant. The geothermal energy will be used to produce electricity and heat. Among other tasks, this project aims to develop a support tool for the optimal design of the structure for the surface activities in the geothermal plant.Within the developed tool, the repartition between electricity and heat production is in parallel. The geothermal fluid is split in two streams, one is used for an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for electricity production, and the other is connected to a District Heating Network (DHN) for the heat distribution. This tool enables to determine simultaneously:which is the best repartition between electricity and heat, which is the best sizing for ORC components, which is the best configuration for the DHN.About the ORC, the tool will enable to decide if the use of an Internal Heat Exchanger (IHE) is interesting or not. For the DHN point of view, all the consumers envisaged are not mandatory. The tool will enable to choose which consumers it is better to connect to the network and in which disposition. The use of discrete variables is necessary and the optimization problem to be solved is a MINLP (Mixed Integer Non Linear Programming) problem.A solution strategy is implemented in order to obtain a confident solution with a determinist algorithm. This strategy is tested for different study cases close to FONGEOSEC conditions. Stability and Robustness of this strategy are then highlighted. An economic and an exergetic analysis are carried out. In order to find a good compromise between the two objectives, a multi-objective solution is performed. Finally, the diversity of results obtained shows it is not suitable to dissociate ORC and DHN studies and shows the interest of the developed tool

Full textClimate change and the decrease in energy resources lead to seek for new solutions in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. In France, heating of buildings constitutes 22% of final energy consumption and 7% of CO2 emissions. The renewal of the installed base of buildings is slow (in the range of 1% per year). Thus the fast decrease (in the range of fifteen years) in CO2 emissions depends on the number of technical solutions adapted to the refurbishing market. Within this context, a high-energy efficiency heat pump has been developed. However, to take up the challenge, such a heat pump has to comply with various refurbishing constraints, especially in terms of temperature distribution. Its technical performances have to be high, for low outdoor air temperature (large temperature difference between the cold source and the hot sink) as well as moderate outdoor air temperature (lower temperature difference between the cold source and the hot sink). To comply with those technical requirements, a two-stage system allowing an easy switch to single stage configuration has been selected. Then the various components of the system have been designed with a specific attention to the sensitivity of the different design parameters on the global energy efficiency of the heat pump. The modelling of the components has allowed simulating the operation of the heat pump and to compare the results to tests results obtained on a prototype. Based on these test results, a computational tool has been developed for the simulation of single houses and their heating system, leading to the calculation of the HSPF (heating seasonal performance factor), and the study of the system behaviour. In order to improve seasonal performances, the gain of variable capacity through speed variation has been evaluated using a prototype and calculations of HSPF, showing its interest

Full textHeating and domestic hot water production represent more than 80% of the energy consumption of the residential sector in France. The rehabilitation is of great potential. The replacement of old boilers by air-to-water heat pumps constitutes one of the most effective solutions, which leads to a major reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The constraints limiting the operation of usual heat pumps have been identified. A new concept of air-to-water versatile heat pump (single-stage / 2-stage) has been developed. The principal functions of this new concept are: heating and cooling, operation without additional electric heat supply, production of domestic hot water in summer and in winter, and capacity control by the compression architecture. The principal results obtained are: Compared to a usual heat pump, the new concept allows an energy saving up to 34. 5 % and a reduction of the CO2 emissions up to 24 % depending on the climatic conditions and the hydronic heating distributor system; With the rise of gas and fuel prices, the new concept can compete on total cost conventional solutions for heating with efficient boilers. The CO2 emissions can be reduced by at least a factor 4 compared to fioul or gas-fired boilers. The seasonal COP can be further increased by a better optimisation of both the frosting/defrosting cycles and the combined production of heat and domestic hot water, as well as the replacement of the compressors by more efficient ones

Full textIn the electric vehicle (EV) development context, the choice of heat pumps (HP) for cabin heating is becoming more popular due to their high efficiency compared to electric heaters. However, under some operating conditions, frost forms on the HP evapo-condenser causing a dramatic drop in the system performances until the system cannot operate. Hence, this work aims at developing a HP for EV which remains efficient under frosting conditions ultimately, to improve the EV range in the winter. This requires the design of a frost-resistant heat exchanger (HX). First, to improve the HX design, a dynamic and pseudo-3D model under frosting conditions of a typical HX for cars has been developed. A simple and accurate frost growth sub-model has been established by studying the various modeling assumptions found in the literature. Then, at the HX level, the key point has been to predict the air pressure losses, via the consideration of the maximum local frost thicknesses and the development of a correlation considering frost, in order to predict the drop of airflow and therefore the drop of the HX cooling capacity. Then, the model of the HX coupled with the fan has been validated experimentally. Using the model, a numerical study has been conducted and two innovative concepts have been established: one with wavy upstream extending fins and the other with crossed passes of refrigerant. Two prototypes were fabricated, using a reference HX taken from the Renault Zoé, and then tested. The best of the two HX, the one with upstream extending fins, was mounted on a VE and compared to the reference case. The prototype allowed extending the system operation by 2.5 times approximately. Finally, a HP model under frosting conditions was built and integrated into a EV model. It appeared that, for an EV with a range of approximately 140 km without heating, the HP frosting degrades the autonomy by about 15% at 0°C and 90% humidity, which was reduced to 3% via the use of the innovative HX prototype with wavy upstream extending fins

Full textEurope's commitment to renewable energy leads to accelerate the biomethane development as a renewable energy. The work of this thesis is based on the Cryo Pur process which is essentially a cooling process that will allow the biogas cooling from ambient temperature to -120 °C. While cooling the biogas, water vapor, CO2 and pollutants must be separated to obtain liquefied biomethane and bio CO2. The objectives pursued are methodological and experimental. The method used is the energy integration associated with an exergy analysis of the process. The analysis integrates the cooling production and the heat production by the refrigeration units for the use in the methanisation process. The energy optimization starts from the exergy analysis and identifies the losses of the various stages of the process and integrates both the cooling production at different temperature levels and the heat production used in the digester. The heat requirement of the digester is around 50 to 55 °C for the thermophilic bacteria. For the biogas upgrading and the liquefaction of biomethane, the cooling requirements are from ambient temperature to -120 °C. In the Cryo Pur process, refrigeration is carried out at 4 different temperature levels: 2 °C, -40 °C, -78 °C and -120 °C. The heat pump is coupled to the various refrigeration systems by cooling a refrigerant at a temperature which is the objective of the overall optimization of the heat pump system. The heat pump cools the condensers of the 4 refrigeration systems and the heat recovered from the refrigeration systems is upgraded to 55 °C by the heat pump.In addition to this overall energy optimization, the thesis focuses on the frosting and defrosting of the water contained in the biogas. This operation consumes a lot of energy. An energy optimization work is carried out to minimize the energy consumption for the dehumidification of biogas from ambient temperature to -78 ° C. The representation of the frosting and defrosting cycles and the losses associated with the temperature of the metallic mass of the heat exchangers requires a dynamic modeling. The dynamic modeling will lead to design the heat exchangers. The ultimate aim is to achieve the highest possible exergy efficiency. Tests made it possible to validate the models of the heat exchangers and refrigeration systems. The optimization also integrates the choice of refrigerant mixtures

Full textThis report is a study of the absorber and the desorber of an absorptioncompression heat pump, which are falling film type reactors using vertical plates geometry. Two kinds of models with coupled heat and mass transfers are detailled. The first one is based on local equations using thermal and molecular diffusivities ; it allows the calculation of Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. The second one is based on equations using heat and mass transfer coefficient. Both models give heat flux and mass flux in the liquid solution and in the vapor. The influence of the value of heat and mass coefficients that appear in the second, model on the global performances of the absorption-compression cycle is presented. Sorne results are compared with measurements made on an experimental heat pump. A second experimental study is made to compare the efficiency of different corrugated plates used in the reactors

Full textCurrently, improving energy efficiency becomes a main challenge for all industrial energy systems. This challenge involves an improved recovery of wasted heat generated by several industrial processes. Large energy savings and potential environmental benefits are associated with the use of industrial heat pump mainly at high temperature levels (>130°C) unavailable on the market. The development of high temperature heat pump using water vapor as working fluid is investigated. Technical problems restraining the feasibility of this industrial heat pump are surmounted by a specifically designed heat pump, the development of a new twin screw compressor and a new centrifugal compressor with magnetic bearings. A dynamic model of this heat pump is developed using Modelica and taking into account the presence of non-condensable gases in the machine. Detailed models of the compressors are developed based on their geometrical characteristics. Experimental results of the start-up phase have been presented showing the non-condensable purging process and the evolution of some parameters of the heat pump. These experimental results have been confronted to numerical simulations. Several scenarios of industrial processes for high-temperature heat recovery and heat upgrading are numerically simulated and analyzed based on energetic and exergetic studies. The heat pump model has been integrated to a distillation column showing the global energy savings and the environmental benefits of using this developed heat pump

Full textThe aim of this work is to experiment CO2 based mixtures as working fluids for heat pump applications in buildings, in order to enhance their performances compared to pure CO2 dual services heat pumps. Since adding other chemicals to CO2 moves the critical point and generally equilibrium lines, it is expected that lower operating pressures as well as higher global efficiencies can be reached. A simple stage pure CO2 cycle is used as reference, with fixed external conditions. Two scenarios are considered: water is heated from 10 °C to 65 °C for Domestic Hot Water (DHW) scenario and from 30 °C to 35 °C for Central Heating (CH) scenario. In both cases, water at the evaporator inlet is set at 7 °C to account for such outdoor temperature conditions. In order to understand the dynamic behaviour of thermodynamic cycles with mixtures, it is essential to measure the fluid circulating composition. To this end, we have developed a non intrusive method. Online optical flow cells allow the recording of infrared spectra by means of a Fourier Transform Infra Red spectrometer. A careful calibration is performed by measuring a statistically significant number of spectra for samples of known composition. Then, a statistical model is constructed to relate spectra to compositions. After calibration, compositions are obtained by recording the spectrum in few seconds, thus allowing for a dynamic analysis. Mixtures of CO2 & propane and CO2 & R-1234yf have been tested and showed great potential on enhancing performances of the heat pump for central heating applications

Full textCurrently, most heat pump(HP) manufacturers provide coefficient of performance (COP) values obtained in laboratories under standardized controlled operating conditions. These COP values are not necessarily representative of those obtained on-field. A promising method, referred to as the performance assessment method, that measures heat pump performances in-situ based on compressor energy balance, was presented by Tran et al. (2013). The method determines refrigerant mass flow rate and has the capability of measuring performances of various HP types, such as air-to-air, as well as more complex refrigeration cycles. The method abstains from intrusive measurements, and is, therefore, perfectly suitable for in-situ measurements. As shown in the work of Tran et al. (2013), compressor heat losses account for 40% in the final uncertainty of performance values obtained with the performance assessment method. The objective of this thesis is to establish a rather simplified measurement method, in terms of instrumentation, that is used to determine compressor heat losses in-situ. For this purpose two detailed numerical models for assessing the temperature fields of the scroll and rotary compressor shells were developed. Experimental measurements obtained with the help of compressor manufacturer, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), are used to validate and calibrate the numerical models. The developed numerical models allow to define two different measurement protocols for both compressors. Established compressor heat loss protocol for rotary compressor is then integrated in the performance assessment method and the obtained heating capacities are compared with reference measurements in an experimental test bench in EDF Lab Les Renardières
