Abstract:
Engineering Mathematics 2 is one of the core courses for all diploma-level engineering students in Malaysian Polytechnic. From the statistics obtained, students achievement in the Engineering Mathematics 2 course (DBM2013) is still moderate and less satisfactory. This is because the subject of Engineering Mathematics 2 is mostly related to calculus and only students who have taken Additional Mathematics subject during secondary school had a basic in the Engineering Mathematics 2. Thus, this research was developed to see the relationship and influence of Mathematics subject during secondary school level, especially Additional Mathematics with the subject of Engineering Mathematics 2 in Polytechnic. High school achievement was measured using the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination results in Additional and Modern Mathematic subjects. Meanwhile, the results in the polytechnic level were measured from the final result of the Engineering Mathematics 2 course. The research used secondary data obtained from the examination unit from 2442 students of Semester 2 of Diploma in Civil Engineering (JKA), Diploma in Electrical Engineering (JKE) and Diploma in Mechanical Engineering JKM) at Polytechnic Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin (PSMZA). Data obtained were processed and analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2010 and Statistical Packages For Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 through Easy Linear Regression Analysis. The findings from the regression analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation between the achievement of Mathematics during secondary schools with the achievement of Engineering Mathematics 2 in polytechnics and it also proved that Additional Mathematics is one of the medium for student’s excellence in Engineering Mathematics 2 at polytechnics.

Bahrain Polytechnic is a Higher Education technical institution established in 2008 (by Royal Decree No. 65 for the year 2008). Its main mission is to supply the Bahraini economy with a skilled Bahraini labour force aiming to contribute to economic growth and diversification. The Polytechnic ensures that its values of excellence, learning and innovation are achieved by designing curricula that meet international standards as well as national and individual needs through continuous consultations with the industries and international education institutions. The development of computer and technological literacy is a significant predictor for success in the workplace and is also one of the key skills that the polytechnic provides through its programmes to students and faculty. This paper explores how computer literacy and skills are acquired by educators and students through International Computer Driving License (ICDL) tools employed at Bahrain Polytechnic. The study also considers the challenges that hinder learners from completing the requirements of ICDL. If adequate numbers of faculty and students have already learned basic computer skills, then the question facing the polytechnic is if computer literacy should continue to be taught at all levels. To answer this question, ICDL tests were administered to ascertain the computer literacy level of existing faculty and students. The results of the tests will determine which ICDL tests students and faculty should be placed on in order to address their computer literacy needs.

Sun, L. T. "A study of mathematics and physics education from school to polytechnic in Hong Kong." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1988. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/10565.

Full text
Abstract:
Hong Kong is a British colony, a world trade centre, and a world banking and financial centre. The highly successful city is strongly linked with education in Hong Kong. However, education in Hong Kong is much influenced by education in Britain: Sixth Form education is a bridge crossing from school to tertiary education or from school to society. Mathematics is a foundation for all subjects. In addition, mathematics and physics are most popular subjects in the Hong, Kong A-level examination. The mathematical and physical sciences have changed significantly during the past few decades. The most conspicuous and impressive development in mathematics is the enormous increase in the amount of new subject matter being created. In physical science, the coming of relativity theory and quantum theory have revolutionised the traditional concepts. Almost all the new technologies in the world are based on modern physics theory. Such developments have resulted in a complete revision of the content of university courses and school curricula. More generally, changes at one level of education are almost certain to cause changes at other levels and problems at the relevant interfaces. The author's study investigated the transition in mathematics and physics education from school to Hong Kong Polytechnic(s). The first part of this study mainly dealt with the mathematics and physics education in school, particularly the relationship between these two disciplines as well as their A-level syllabuses. The second part of this study dealt with the students' academic performance in mathematics and physics at polytechnic in relation to their entry qualifications and the medium of instruction in school. In addition, a number of surveys on the use of mathematics and physics topics conducted among students in the polytechnic was studied in. order to help the author to propose new A-level syllabuses to fit the modern tertiary education in Hong Kong. Finally, a set of recommendations for the improvement of the Hong Kong education system in general as well as mathematics and physics education in particular are suggested.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the management of product information in concurrent design systems has been investigated with particular reference to product development in small and medium enterprise (SME) industry and design education at polytechnic level in Singapore. From a critical review of the relevant literature on product design and development processes, concurrent engineering, concurrent design systems, product data management and related methods, it is found that there is a clear need for a new design of a system for organizing and managing product information in a concurrent design environment in the above contexts. This finding has led to the development of a conceptual rationale, termed the Design Tensor Method, and the design and development of an innovative product information management system called PRIMAS. PRIMAS is a systematic methodology for the classification, organization, integration, communication, storage and management of product information in the product development process. A software prototype based on PRIMAS has been subsequently developed. PRIMAS along with its conceptual principles have been applied and tested in a product design project in a tertiary educational institution and in two significant industrial product development projects based respectively in two SMEs. Positive evaluation feedback on PRIMAS has been obtained in these studies. The product development projects investigated with PRIMAS have also produced outcomes that meet the original specified design requirements. The findings from this research have led to the conclusion that PRIMAS is a viable product information management system that can be used effectively for managing product information in concurrent design projects in SME industry and design education. Substantial PRIMAS databases of useful product information have been compiled for the product development projects investigated with PRIMAS. Finally, recommendations are made for future research.

We investigated the possibilities and limits of collaborative reading-writing mediated by Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) at the medium level polytechnic schools. In this sense, we developed a action-research with teachers of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), a coordinator of Portuguese idiom teaching, and students of the second and third years of a medium level polytechnic state school in São Francisco de Assis (RS). The study was driven during the second semester of 2014 and first semester of 2015. We adopted the methodological conception of action-research because our intention do not limit itself to discover or describe a pedagogical practice, but mostly to transform it through action-reflection-action cycles. We proposed collaborative reading-writing practices mediated by a Moodle wiki system, in the context of medium level teaching. These practices evidence the dialogical problem posing notion, and thus, they showed up as an innovative alternative to the teaching-learning process. Finally, we highlighted limits and possibilities which emerged from the concrete action, evidencing that the collaboration and the dialogical problem poser are essential for the reading-writing practice in Portuguese idiom. We also pointed that, beyond driving a digital literacy with the students, the pedagogical practices mediated by networked technologies enhanced new knowledge acquisition and production modes.

"La ricerca a fronte della sfida ambientale", the third volume in the DOTTA series, this publication documents the third edition of the Osdotta seminar co-ordinated by the Polytechnic of Milan, held in Lecco on 12-13-14 September 2007. The acronym of the Monitoring Centre of the Doctorate in Architectural Technology (Osservatorio del Dottorato in Tecnologia dell'Architettura), Osdotta was generated by the need to create a space for cultural exchange in relation to research contents and methods pertinent to technological disciplines. An experience acknowledged as a site of scientific interconnection and networked structure, it sets itself the goal of exploring the complexity of the research on multiple scales, investigating and focusing emerging issues and studying the national training scenario so as to boost the professional level of the research. The 2007 edition of the national seminar demonstrates the consolidation of an inter-site education/training experiment of an innovative character that materialises in the rendering of the results of exchange and dialogue on a theme with a wealth of faceted values: the environment, in the form of a challenge that explores the relation with technology.

Over the course of the fourteen-week graduate term, seven professors from both departments offered lectures on their particular area of expertise. Together with conventional homework assignments, the course incorporated a multidisciplinary project aspect where students were divided into teams and assigned an infrastructure system. The students prepared detailed presentations on a specific aspect of the degradation methods affecting their infrastructure system. These presentations culminated in the first ever WPI Degradation Symposium, in which each student team presented a poster based on their research. This chapter outlined the motivation behind, experience with, and lessons learned from this course, which may serve as a model in corrosion education as such issues become more important with the continuing decay of the worldwide built environment.

Abstract:
The chapter presents an overview of the content and language-integrated learning (CLIL) experience of Tomsk Polytechnic University as an illustration of the general discussion of CLIL methodology. CLIL-based courses are analyzed against the criteria of their place in the educational programs, teaching objectives, and organization. The chapter further aims to introduce and discuss requirements for students' language proficiency, the use of students' native language, lesson pace, and other factors that can affect students' engagement and the level of achieving learning outcomes. Theoretical insight into CLIL benefits and drawbacks and a practical study of TPU cases provides guidance for further empirical research and can build on the conceptual framework of nation-based CLIL practice. The framework informs qualitative research in disentangling causes and effects and has the potential to stimulate practical changes in CLIL didactics that are adequate for the context conditions of the Russian higher education area.

Abstract:
Even though Karl Schellbach remained a high school teacher throughout his life, he left traces in mathematics, especially in the training of mathematics teachers and in science policy. Generally, he is known as teacher of Eisenstein, Hensel, and Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia, later Emperor Friedrich III, but above all as head of the “Mathematisch-pädagogische Seminar” in Berlin, which prominent mathematicians visited to prepare for school service. Schellbach published numerous journal articles and books on mathematics, both on didactics and on research topics current at his times. From 1857 to 1880 he was co-editor of the “Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik” on the same level as Kronecker, Kummer, and Weierstrass. In the exercises from the “Mathematisch-pädagogische Seminar” one finds the method to determine local extrema without differential calculus which Schellbach had developed in order to circumvent the prohibition of infinitesimal calculus by the Prussian Ministry of Education in 1829. Generally, he campaigned against the repression of mathematics. In this regard, he acted as talented pedagogue and book author but was only able to influence the structures of the educational system to a limited extent. However, Schellbach could use his relation to Prince Friedrich Wilhelm in order to promote mathematics and natural sciences. Memoranda to the Prince, in which Schellbach was involved, led to the establishment of the Astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam in 1874 and the “Physikalisch-technische Reichsanstalt” in 1883. Also the first foundation of a polytechnic school in Prussia, today’s RWTH Aachen, was influenced by him since it was initiated by the Prince. Schellbach also worked in the background when the “Königlich Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg” was founded in 1879, today’s TU Berlin. Abstract:
In August 2013, the Purdue University President and Board of Trustees designated the transformation of the College of Technology into the Purdue Polytechnic Institute as one of Purdue’s “Big Moves”. This transformation requires changes of enormous breadth and depth for everyone in the college. Now, almost half-way through the transformation, milestones and expectations continue to be met. However, much work is still to be done to fully execute a successful transformation. The transformation continues to allow faculty extraordinary opportunities to revise many parts of the college, including curricula, instruction methods, learning spaces, etc. A key characteristic of the transformation is creating learning environments that are student-centered with innovative instruction techniques. TECH 120 – “Design Thinking in Technology”, is a freshman level survey course designed to develop a student’s perspective and enhance their skills in living and working in a technological society while introducing them to the College of Technology — now Purdue Polytechnic. Prior to the fall 2015 semester, Purdue Polytechnic New Albany decided to redesign portions of their TECH 120 course. The aim was to improve team project-based learning opportunities while incorporating modernized teaching methods. With a fresh set of eyes and collaboration between new and tenured faculty the projects, lectures, and assessments were all analyzed looking for areas for higher level of innovation and creativity. The aim for the overall effort was to increase student success rate (i.e. successful completion of assigned project tasks) while improving the alignment with elements of the transformation. In past semesters, the course consisted of a mixture of traditional instructor-led lectures and a series of team projects. Each individual project part was intended to build upon each other while promoting the successful completion of a much larger final task. At the core of each project was LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT. The second generation set in the MINDSTORMS series is a programmable robotics kit that is based on robotics technology similar to that used in industry today. Each group (3–4 students) were given their own kit at the beginning of the semester. The final project statement was to design and build an autonomous robot which could identify and follow a light source attached to an instructor’s robot, which would be driven around a room. This task proved to be difficult and had a low success rate. The new project is to design and build a robot that autonomously draws the initials (first and last name) of each team member within an assigned writing zone on a poster. The constant and open collaboration between the two TECH 120 instructors and the incorporation of student input proved to be important during the redesign. The success rate at the end of the semester increased. From course surveys, data also shows that students’ enjoyment and interest in the final project increased. This short paper will describe the introduction to a team project-based activity in a polytechnic setting which uses modernized teaching methods. Preliminary findings and observations will be presented.

Abstract:
The serious situation caused by the coronavirus has forced Authorities to take drastic decisions that have affected the normal functioning of the entire society. One of the most impactful measures taken has been the self-discipline of the social distancing as the entire society has been obliged to stay at home. At the education level, restrictions ordered by the Authorities have limited the access to all professors and students at the academic centers. In Spain, the state of alarm decreed by the Government has affected the entire Academic course and therefore, in order to be able to preserve the public service, the Polytechnic University of Valencia, in just a week, has been asked to revise the entire programs and settle on-line courses for more than 35.000 students in multiples disciplines. Within this framework, a methodology has been developed for the implementation of on-line learning courses in a period of crisis within a short time. On-line learning has been demonstrated to be effective as face-to-face education, becoming one of the most popular higher education alternatives. However, students engaged in on-line classes result to be less engaged in collaborative learning, student-faculty interactions, and discussions with their classmates if compared to the traditional system. In this context, the barriers of on-line teaching classes have been investigated and tools to overcome them have been proposed. Finally, a real application to the Polytechnic University of Valencia is presented.

Abstract:
Recently, African countries have been making efforts to expand their higher education systems. However, neither capacity nor quality have kept pace with demand, leading to a steady increase in students studying abroad. In this paper, we aim to analyse the development of enrolments in Portugal, one of the main destinations for students from Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP). Descriptive analyses were performed, disaggregating enrolments according to degree level, disciplinary area of study, and institution type. The results show that the choices of students from PALOP countries have followed different trajectories, in some cases with similarities. The public sector has the largest presence of these students, and polytechnic institutions have been the most frequent choice. Most of the students were enrolled in first degrees, except for those from Mozambique. Enrolments in Health, Services and "hard" sciences have increased, which may reflect the growing demand for highly qualified labour force in these countries. This paper highlights the continued importance of PALOP students for the internationalisation of Portuguese higher education and the need to avoid considering them as a homogeneous group of students.
