Abstract:
Abstract Too often the Church dismisses the issue of environmentalism as peripheral, or even alien, to the theological witness of the Bible. Yet the testimony of both Old and New Testaments is that God is invested in the well-being of the earth and its creatures and that humanity bears responsibility as God's steward of the same. This essay investigates this topic as it is communicated through the politeia of ancient Israel, the book of Deuteronomy. The laws of land tenure, agriculture, warfare, wild creatures, and animal husbandry are examined with an eye toward the larger biblical theological message of the Bible. Israel's practice is compared to the norms of its ancient society, and modern parallels are proposed.

Abstract:
The subject of this paper concerns two mechanisms wich help philosophy to circumvente the subject of Holocaust. These are: the philosophy of Heidegger and the neo-marxists tenets of so called Frankfurt School, especially those of Theodor Adorno. While Heidegger is seen in this paper as a resulting prioritization of chtonic symbolism within the the culture of Wiemar Germany, which pushes out the alternative of Ernst Cassirer, the leftist matrix of Adorno's thought is equally seen as a distancing paradigm that abolishes Biblical language, through metaphysics. Paper investigates in some details these mechanisms which aim at abolishing strategic solutions of both Jewish nation and Holocaust - in the package of Zionist ideals. Author sees philosophical fixation on generic trajectoria of man-as-species, as a way of devious handling of the specifics of the Jewish existence.

Abstract:
This essay does not dwell yet again on traditional issues associated with 2 Maccabees usually discussed through a Jewish lens by dozens of modern scholars. It also does not view the book within its traditional Jewish Hellenistic “Sitz im Leben,” with its self-evident Hellenistic-Jewish reading audience, and its aim is neither to draw a distinction between Greek topoi and biblical motifs nor to discuss its values as an historical text. Rather, the article assumes a pagan reading publicum alongside a Jewish Hellenistic one that, in contradistinction with its Jewish audience, could easily see in 2 Maccabees a standard narrative of a life in a Greek polis under foreign rule, where the “ancestral constitution” plays a significant role, so typical of Greek poleis from the classical period (Delian league) through the Hellenistic era (Macedonian Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires). Reading the book as a Greek would have can give us new insights concerning its socio-political and theological message (independently of its Jewish one). The article reconstructs a politeia as a learned Greek would have done. The book can actually be read as a reflection, or rather a microcosmos of the second century B.C.E. in the Greek sphere during the Hellenistic period. The overall message of the book emerges different than that broadcasted to the Hellenistic Jews, and constitutes a rich mine of theoretical information about the relationship between a subject city and an empire.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The broader practice of politics in the world, while detached from the religion, cannot be excluded from the mission of the Missio Dei. In fact, the question of mission and politics has prompted Professor Johannes Reimer to propose missio politica as a missiological framework that puts the mandate of mission and politics in one basket. Following this solid foundation, this paper will propose the use of missio politica as an important missiological framework to analyse the instrumentally useful politics in line with the ultimate goal of Missio Dei. In accordance with the tenets of both missio politica in the name of missio Dei, this paper will then consider the South African ANC's step-aside rule from a biblical perspective, arguing that the accounts of Samuel's leadership in 1 Samuel 8 and the story of Ananias with his wife in Acts 5:1-11 represent a somewhat biblical understanding of the step-aside rule. The ANC's step-aside rule only serves to relativize the need for a missio politica. This paper promises a better understanding of the relationship between mission and politics, such an understanding is a key to uncovering new ways to ensure a meaningful participation of all other sectors of society in achieving the goal of Missio Dei. Missio politica represent what has been missing in the missiological discourse. Therefore, this framework needs to be further explored in order to emphasize the mandate of politics in accordance with the Missio Dei.

Abstract:

Abstract:

AZZAN, SIMONA. "'ATOMI DELLE SCRITTURE': IL RUOLO DELL'INTEPRETAZIONE BIBLICA NEL LEVIATHAN DI THOMAS HOBBES." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/675148.

Abstract:
In Leviathan Hobbes confronts with the Bible devoting no less than half part of his work to religious and theological matter. In the parts three and four of Leviathan we can find eighteen voluminous chapters devoted to the discussion of various elements of the Christian faith such as prophecy, revelation, miracles and salvation. In doing so Hobbes deals with a lot of passages from the Old and New Testament. In my thesis I consider the reasons, the method, and the role of Hobbes’s account on the Bible to show how the biblical interpretation and the political theory of Hobbes are strictly related. In the first part, I consider how the historical and intellectual reasons that lead Hobbes into a so closer study of the Bible are innumerable and varied. I considered how the dilemma of choosing between papal and clerical abuse to the monopoly over right interpretation, and between protestant Sola Scripura arising from the individual right to read the bible for oneself, appears a theoretical problem in Leviathan. Hobbes faces this problem confronts with the Bible to show how the Scripture affirms that the Sovereign should control both civil and ecclesiastical power and how one unified and scientific method of reading the Bible could potentially eliminate all religious conflict. In this way Hobbes can reply, as much as political libido dominandi of catholic Church to the religious enthusiasm of puritans. In the second part of the thesis I considered how, in his account of the Bible Hobbes adopts an hermeneutic principles that provide for the use of mere natural reason and strictly excluded Enthusiasm or supernatural inspiration. In the chapter XXXIII of Leviathan Hobbes explains that men should expect an agreement between the truth of reason and God’s word and so Christians should not renounce to their senses or experiences nor does their natural reason because they are useful to understand better the word of God. Hobbes cannot deny that, in Scripture, there be many things above reason, but he parenterally affirms that there is nothing contrary to it. Hobbes develops in his biblical exegesis a strong critic against scholasticism. Hobbes’s rejection to schoolman is based in fact on his conclusion that their way of philosophizing has contributed to the abuse of the scripture by constructing an abstract and confusing language which is contrary to natural reason and adepts can manipulate the citizens. In the third part I considered how this is true especially for his account on the Hebrew Bible, the first five book of the Bible, known also as Torah, or “the law”. While tracing back the history of Jews, in his discussion on the Prophetic kingdom of God, Hobbes ascertains that civil and ecclesiastical powers have always been an exclusive privilege exercised by a one and single person, holder of the supreme authority to interpret the law and the word of God. According to Hobbes is the Mosaic covenant, described in the book of exodus, is the historical example of unified authority: political and religious. As Moses controlled both the civil and the ecclesiastical power so the sovereign is allowed to establish regulations for the conduct of civil life, and he has the power to judge the word of God and impose obligation in God’s name, since is God that gives the authority to interpret divine commands to the people invested with sovereignty. In this sense the political exegesis of the Hebrew Bible is something crucial in Hobbes’s argumentations.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes how female figures relate to events in the nascent Muslim polity—in its emerging theological discourses, its normative social practices, and its encounters with other religiously identified polities. Moving roughly chronologically through the revelation of Qur’anic surahs, the chapter focuses on narratives in which women are involved in the establishment of communal moral and legal precedents, such as in the case of a slander against a righteous woman. This heuristic brings to light ways in which female personalities serve as exemplars of vice and virtue against the backdrop of a religious polity in formation. The chapter argues that the Qur’an regularly depicts female moral and spiritual excellence and is often proactively engaged with affairs of direct importance for girls and women. At the same time, certain female figures exercise their agency only to their own detriment. The chapter highlights how narratives involving biblical figures feature prominently in the Qur’an during a period in which the Prophet Muḥammad was attempting to forge political alliances grounded in a sense of theological kinship. In this context, the Qur’an depicts the women of the Prophet Muḥammad’s family as continuing a legacy of exemplary biblical women figures.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how books about history, science, or religion were shared. Library catalogues and diaries show that the borrowing, selling, and reading of sermons, histories, and travel writing dwarfed that of literary works. Records of books sold in parts show that the largest genre available in this form was history, followed by geography, topography, and travel, then biblical commentary, church history, and treatises on morality. The expanding print market created newly accessible formats across many areas of intellectual enquiry, and the display of generalist knowledge about historical figures, botany, or astronomy was a prominent part of polite accomplishment for both men and women. Eighteenth-century readers consumed nonfiction works together at home—for piety, self-improvement, and entertainment.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the various ways in which violent rites might have an impact on the shaping of social relationships in the world of the biblical text. The author’s primary interest in this chapter is to illuminate how ritual violence might function to terminate, perpetuate, and even create connections between individuals, groups, or polities. Texts examined include 1 Sam 22:12–19, the story of Saul’s mercenary Doeg the Edomite’s execution of the priests of Nob; 2 Sam 10:1–5, the Ammonites’ public humiliation of David’s embassy of comforters; 2 Sam 16:5–13, the cursing, stoning, and dirt casting of Shimi the Benjaminite as David flees Jerusalem before Absalom’s army; 2 Sam 20:1–22, the execution of the rebel Sheba ben Bikri by the inhabitants of Abel Bet Maacah; and Neh 13:25, the account of Nehemiah’s violent, coercive rites targeting his intermarried opponents.

Abstract:
This chapter explores perceptions of women's magic in late antiquity and post-Roman Europe. It reveals that they had much in common; they drew on familiar themes developed around specific larger-than-life biblical and literary characters. The stereotype of women avariciously wielding magic to ensnare men and upset the body politic through secretive sorcery are absent in patristic writings about Christian women, but that archetype resurfaced in early medieval sources. Yet, however fearful, sinful, and illegal women's magic was, their sorcery was taken seriously and acted to empower them. Their sorcery was terrifying—indexed on ancient rituals drawn from rhythms of the natural world. Women, who were themselves defined by their corporeality, had an intuitive affinity for magic of the body. Both healing and birth magic were domains in which competition between the church, wives, and mothers was rife.
