Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of Poland&rsquo
s NATO and EU memberships on Polish foreign policy towards Russia by taking the historical background of Poland&rsquo
s relations with Russia into account. The main objective of the thesis is to examine the change in Polish foreign policy towards Russia in the aftermath of its memberships in NATO and the EU in 1999 and 2004 respectively. The thesis argues that Poland has changed its accommodative approach towards Russia and started to pursue a more assertive foreign policy after its NATO and the EU memberships due to its decreasing dependency on this country. In this thesis, the concept of interdependence is employed to explain Polish foreign policy on Russia. The thesis has six chapters, including Introduction and Conclusion chapters. The second chapter explores the historical background of Polish-Russian relations. The third chapter analyzes the main characteristics of Polish foreign policy in the post-Cold War era. The fourth chapter examines the impact of Poland&rsquo
s NATO membership on Polish foreign policy towards Russia. The fifth chapter discusses the impact of Poland&rsquo
s EU membership on its foreign policy towards Russia.

Abstract:
After Poland assumed a pro-Western orientation following the end of the communist regime in 1989, its immediate foreign policy goals became to join NATO and the EU, the importance of Poland's relations with the newly emerging states in the ex-Soviet region lagged behind in the foreign policy agenda. While there was political consensus among the policy making elite and the populace about Poland's integration into Western structures and necessary resources and efforts were channelled to this end, challenges posed by the transformation in Poland's East was dealt with in a piecemeal fashion, devoid of a coherent conceptual Eastern policy framework and a strong institutional backing. However, as Poland's prospects of joining NATO and the EU became more secure. Eastern policy was increasingly debated in intellectual and academic circles and foreign policy makers searched for a more structured and robust response to the challenges brought about by relations with Poland's Eastern neighbours. Poland's Eastern policy has progressed since the early 1990s when its existence was doubted and became an important dimension of Poland's foreign policy and after joining the EU in 2004, Polish policy makers even contemplated how Poland's Eastern policy could influence and even shape the EU's relations with its Eastern neighbours. This study investigates the factors that contributed to the formation of an Eastern policy concept and domestic and international determinants that shaped Poland's relations with its Eastern neighbours. It presents how Polish foreign policy responded to a changing regional and international environment and gives an account of Poland's accession process to NATO and the EU and concurrent development of relations with the Eastern neighbours. It explores the legal framework and institutions that take part in foreign policy making and execution and offers an analysis of 20th century historical currents and intellectual and academic debates on EP. Poland's bilateral relations with Russia, Ukraine and Belarus constitute the main case studies where the impact on relations of domestic political discourses in Poland, the EU and NATO enlargement, economic and investment links, regional energy politics and the role of minorities and historical heritage are examined. As well as extensive primary and secondary sources, the study utilises in-depth interviews with high level Polish policy makers, academics and businessmen undertaken during fieldwork in Poland.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the patterns of language alternation in the Polish community in Lithuania, which can be described as an indigenous ethnic group that has been living on the territory of modern-day Lithuania since the fourteenth century (Potašenko 2007). Following two language ideologies, Russification during Soviet times and Lithuanisation post-independence, the Lithuanian Poles developed complex linguistic repertoires, consisting of the regional and standard variety of Polish, Russian and Lithuanian. One of the most significant consequences of the prolonged language contact has been the emergence of frequent and regular language alternation between the regional variety of Polish and Russian, which constitutes the focal point of the present study. As the existing research suggests, the linguistic phenomena arising as a result of language contact can be situated along a continuum, which starts with code-switching, then gradually moves towards code-mixing and finally evolves into a conventionalised fused lect (Auer 1999). 'Classic' code-switching is characterised by the locally meaningful juxtaposition of the two languages, code-mixing can be described as a type of interaction where the switched mode of speaking becomes the norm while a fused lect is an even further development of bilingual speech, which presupposes loss of variation and an increase of linguistic structure. The data for the present study come from a corpus of spontaneous conversations involving members of the Polish community. The recordings were collected in the city of Vilnius and feature 25 respondents in their twenties. The data analysis reveals that all three types of language alternation feature in the present corpus; however, code-mixing is clearly the preferred type. It immediately manifests itself in the frequent insertion of Russian single switches and larger constituents into the Polish base. As a result of its wide spread and frequency, language alternation has lost its immediate local meaning and the pattern of frequent Polish-Russian mixing has become the accepted mode of speaking within the Polish speech community.

Czap, Marcin. "Polish-British or British-Polish? : Changing identities of Polish war refugees in East Anglia and London from 1945 until today." Thesis, University of Essex, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.605152.

Abstract:
Following the agenda of current debates in sociology of immigration and ethnicity I analyse the evolution of ethnic and national identifications of a group of Polish war refugees who settled after the Second World War in East Anglia. My analysis is based on four theoretical concepts : ethnicity, national identity, assimilation and transnationalism and begins before the war back in Poland, where I establish my respondents' base Identification. I then follow them through their war experiences, stop briefly at the moment when they decided not to return home and finish with a step-by-step accounting of their life in exile . To gain a broader picture and a more comprehensive answer to my question I compare my sample with two other groups of Poles: one which arrived in the United Kingdom at the same time as my respondents but settled in and around London while the other arrived after 2004 in the post-EU accession wave of migration-. This enables me to answer my research question : after more than 60 years of exile , which set of identifications is dominant? Are they more British or maybe more Polish or they are somewhere between those two? I come to a conclusion that even after such a long period it is difficult to say which set of identifications is dominant. What I have found out is that my respondent s have a dual or hyphened identity, where, depending on situation and circumstances, they emphasize one or the other side of their lives .

Rosso, A. C. "Essays on Polish emigration." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1425463/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis has a focus on Polish emigration in the 90s, providing further evidence of the effects of emigration on the labour markets in the sending countries and on the selection of emigrants both from the sending and destination country's perspective. The second chapter analyses emigration from Poland over a period of 10 years, showing empirically that emigration had a positive impact on the labour market by increasing average wages, but also by increasing wages of the skill groups that experienced the highest emigration outflow. The empirical evidence is supported by a simple economic model, according to which wages are determined by the country's production technology that distinguishes between different skill groups, and change as a consequence of the relative change of the supply of labour of a skill group. The third chapter studies the selection of Polish emigrants from the sending country towards two of the main destination countries: the United Kingdom and Germany. Selection of emigrants is explained through the difference in wage inequality in the destination versus the source country. The predictions of the theoretical model are supported in the data and emigrants to the UK are negatively selected with respect to non-emigrants in terms of unobservable characteristics. When considering education, emigrants are more positively selected (against the model's predictions). For Germany, the empirical results do not confirm the prediction of the model and selection is likely to be the product of the immigration policies in place at the time The fourth chapter provides empirical evidence on the performance of Polish emigrants in the labour market in the destination countries studied in the third chapter. Interestingly, after 2004, despite the high level of education, Polish immigrants performed very poorly in the British labour market, while the average conditions of Polish immigrants in Germany improved.

Abstract:
This thesis constitutes the first full-length study of Polish Communists in Canada, a group that provided a substantial segment of the countries socialist left in the early 20th century. It traces the roots of socialist support in Poland, its transplantation to Canada, the challenges it faced within an ethnic community heavily influenced by Catholicism, the complications caused by its links to the Comintern, and its changing strength and decline. It offers a deeper understanding of the ways in which the Communist party was able to appeal to certain ethnic groups, such as through cultural outreach, as well as its complicated and often arguably counter-productive relationship with the Comintern. It also furnishes important information on the efforts of the RCMP and Polish consulates to maintain control over the communists, as well as how generally improved material conditions among Poles, especially following the Second World War, along with the influence of the Cold War, accounted for a rapid decline in support. The thesis is primarily based on sources generated by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or, more precisely, by the Polish consulates in Winnipeg, Montreal and Ottawa. One the Canadian side, the thesis took advantage of RCMP records, Canadian security bulletins, immigration records and Polish-language newspapers printed in Canada. By utilizing these sources, this study not only analyses the interaction of the Polish Canadian communist movement with other segments of the Polish community in Canada, but it also moves beyond the introverted approach that has characterized most studies of ethnic organizations in Canada by placing the movement within a “Canadian” context to analyze its relations with the government, broader segments of Canadian society, and the Communist Party of Canada (CPC).

Croll, Kirsteen Davina. "Soviet-Polish relations, 1919-1921." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/663/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921 was a direct consequence of the ideological objectives pursued by the belligerents. Ideology shaped the political agenda and the diametrically opposed war aims of both states, and was implemented through the foreign policy, diplomatic negotiation and military engagements pursued. This proved to be the principal obstacle to the establishment of cordial relations. As western democracy and Russian Marxism battled it out, war was inevitable. Externally, the Paris Peace Conference provided the necessary conditions for the resumption of traditional Russian-Polish hostilities, whilst the Allied States consistently demonstrated their absolute inability to directly influence either the development, or outcome, of the conflict. Redressing the balance of historiography, this thesis includes a greater examination of the conflict from the perspective of the Soviet regime. This firmly controlled the Russian decision-making process. By charting the war, it becomes clear that both states deliberately pursued a dual offensive: traditional diplomatic negotiation and military campaign as conditions dictated. However, in addition, Soviet Russia developed a unique and innovative, revolutionary, agit-prop, diplomatic medium. This enabled adept Soviet diplomats to win the majority of diplomatic battles during the conflict, although often negotiating from a militarily weak position. Nevertheless, the regime ultimately failed in its objective: to ignite socialist revolution in western Europe. The mistaken Soviet decision in July 1920 to cross the ethnographic border to forcefully sovietise Poland, in opposition to Marxist doctrine, irreversibly altered the complexion of the war and proved its pivotal turning point. This culminated politically with the short-lived establishment of the Provisional Revolutionary Committee in Białystok, and militarily, with the decisive defeat of the Red Army at the Battle of Warsaw. It is now certain that the Red Army offensive into Poland in July 1920 aimed not only at the sovietisation of Poland, but at spreading the socialist revolution to Western Europe and overthrowing the Versailles settlement. The European revolutionary upsurge had largely extinguished during the previous year and in August 1920, Communist ideology ultimately failed to inspire the vast majority of the Polish population. Thus, by utilising the Soviet military to secure its war aims, Lenin and the Politburo inadvertently signed the death-warrant of socialist revolution in Poland at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Bowden, Kirstie Louise. "Polish identity in rural England." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/4282.

Full text
Abstract:
With Polish accession to the European Union in 2004 came an unprecedented wave of Polish migration to England. Marking it apart from previous waves of migration which settled in urban areas, this wave settled across the settlement hierarchy, resultantly described as geographically “ubiquitous” by Bauere et al (2007). This thesis takes as its inspiration a triad of influences; this migration wave; what the author deems seminal texts in rural geography (Philo 1992, Askins 2009, Panelli et al 2009); and personal circumstance (living in a rural area receiving Polish migrants for the first time) to chart that postulated as a lacuna (Burrell 2009); a study of the ways in which post-accession Polish identity is played out in rural areas. Wanting to focus on life in rural England as a whole rather than one specific strand, this thesis is by necessity broad, incorporating a number of strands of enquiry; the media migrant worker moral panic, community relations, Polish focussed service responses to Polish migration, and schemes delivered to the rural host population which aim to improve their encounters with migrant populations. What binds these themes together is the notion of hospitality, considering whether it is being extended or withheld, the reasons upon which such acts are predicated and the outcome upon those involved. The thesis concludes that this grand wave of migration has rendered rural areas a thirdspace of possibility in both a physical (via service imprinting on the landscape) and social (via the forging of transnational friendships and in some instances, both Polish and migrant, hybridised identities) sense. It is postulated that the psychogeographies upon which relations are predicated – of which there are many, subtly nuanced and dependent upon the experiences of the individual - are in a state of flux and subject to revision with the passing of time, as are processes of hospitality extension (or indeed withholding). It is my belief that in detailing moments of hopeful engagement alongside moments of deep despair and reflecting upon their impacts upon identity, this thesis has heeded Askins (2005:53) call to embrace transrurality – a conceptualisation “that both encapsulates the specificities of place and is open to mobility and desire in order to displace rural England as only an exclusionary white space” and reposition it within transitional social imaginaries.

Gogłoza, Aleksandra. "Polish Datives - an Applicative Analysis." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/22596.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the relative syntactic position of Polish inherent datives. In semantic terms, we propose that all dative-marked arguments in Polish de- note an entity mentally affected by a change, state or process which takes place within the personal sphere of the entity lexicalised as a dative DP. In syntactic terms, we propose that Polish dative DPs are applicatives, licensed by an Appl head, and that they come in two types, low and high, depend- ing on their syntactic position. Low applicatives merge below v while high applicatives merge above it. The merge position of an applicative determines its syntactic behaviour. In contrast to low applicatives, high applicatives can antecede anaphors, control adjunct participial clauses and depictive secondary predicates. We propose that these differences constitute reliable diagnostics for applicative types in Polish. With these tests, we analyse Polish recipients and benefactives as low applicatives and Polish experiencers as high applicatives. Moreover, we distinguish between applicatives that are free, e.g. benefactives in Polish, and those that are selected, e.g. Polish recipients. Applicatives selected by the verb merge first as part of v or the root, and they become applicatives on movement to [Spec;ApplP]. In contrast, non-selected applicatives merge directly in [Spec;ApplP], i.e. they are born as applicatives. We propose a participant im- plication test to differentiate between these two types. Moreover, extending the analysis beyond Polish data, we hypothesise that cross-linguistically, there exist two types of applicatives, verb-internal, projected as part of vP / VP, and verb-external, projected as part of ApplP. We take Polish datives to be of the latter type.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Engenharia Civil
This thesis refers to the viability of applying the Passive house concept to the Polish climate, focusing on city of Lodz. The Passive house concept introduces the construction of high energy efficient building, with the aim of fulfilling the requirements established by the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2010/31/UE, EPBD). The study began with the introduction to Passive House concept. Therefore, the examples of construction solutions, specifications and overall requirements regarding Passive House were presented. The comparative study over the heating demand of the case study, between the European standard EN 13790 and the software “Passive House Planning Package” was performed. Afterwards, the accommodation of the case study to the Passive House standards with the use of “Passive House Planning Package” was executed. The accommodation was planned for the city of Lodz, Poland. To finalize, the economic study, with the aim of receiving the payback time of investment was presented. Summarizing, this study presents the Passive House concept with the practical approach, performed for Polish climate.

Witeska‐Młynarczyk, A. D. "Landscapes of Polish memory : conflicting ways of dealing with the communist past in a Polish town." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/19437/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research centres on the local acts of national memory politics and retributive justice performed in a Polish town during the years 2006‐2008, when a conservative Law and Justice Party government was in power. Looking at the political processes of conventionalizing and objectifying the communist past in authoritative settings (commemorative rituals, unveiling of monuments, courtrooms, associational meetings, Catholic masses) the author searched for patterns of inclusion and exclusion of political subjects into/from the commemorative landscape of the Polish historicized national community. The thesis concerns the two broadly defined categories of people who became politically engaged during communism: the anti‐communist activists and the ex‐officers of the Ministry of Interior Affairs. The author combines participant observation in various institutional settings with archival work, Critical Discourse Analysis of institutionalized discourses, analysis of material culture of commemoration and an in‐depth work on personal narratives, in order to address the mediating role which state and religious institutions, their agents, and the representations produced by them have played in individual processes of remembering, commemorating, and recalling. The thesis describes the conflicting ways in which the two groups of subjects have actively engaged in an interactive production of representations and claims concerning the communist past. It examines ways in which the institutionalization of memory has generated a cultural form of self-perception relying on a sequential and repeatable way of experiencing the self in a collectively achieved framework of ‘hero/victim’ or ‘perpetrator’. The author approaches the topic of memory by imagining it as a multidimensional figure, understanding the processes of individual remembering and constructing the self as located at the intersection of processes of perception, development of self-schemata, group interaction, and collective instances of objectification and conventionalizing.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the Polish language of immigrants who came to the United States during or after World War II and to test two related hypotheses: 1. Speakers of Polish use a number of lexical intrusions. 2. Lexical intrusions differ in scope depending on whether those speakers had immigrated with minimal education or they received at least 12 years of schooling prior to their immigration. The study was conducted in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in January and February of 1990. The sample consisted of 16 informants whose interviews were recorded and analyzed in terms of lexical borrowings, cultural branches, and parts of speech. Findings supported the two hypotheses.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Engenharia Civil
This dissertation is part of the final examination for Master of Science in Civil Engineering. Its main objective is to design a house for Polish climate, which will meet all the necessary requirements to achieve the Passive house standard. At first, the theoretical part of the thesis has been studied. It contains the general Passive house concept, description of energy efficiency requirements, construction solutions, systems and components applied in designed passive building. Also the results for the calculation of linear thermal bridges in THERM can be found in this part of the work. Following, the practical part of the work has been carried out. Firstly, calculation with the use of Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) for the residential house located in Polish Climate were performed. Secondly, energy calculations for the standard building with the use of PHPP Software and the European Standard EN 1370 have been compared. To finalize, the results and conclusions of the above-mentioned issues are presented.

Abstract:
In this paper I am going to argue that the morphosyntactic phenomenon of Inflected COMP in Polish provides evidence for separate Agr and Tense projections, and that the IP structure developed here licenses pro in Polish. An example of the inflected COMP sentence is the following: (1) a. Dopiero-śmy wsta - ły.; just-1PL get up-PAST/F/PL; 'We just got up.' Although usually the person marker is affixed to the main Verb, it is quite common for speakers to cliticize the person marker onto the first "word" of the sentence while the main Verb is inflected for past tense. This kind of a regular behaviour of the person marker against the past tense marker requires their separation in the tree. Another issue I am going to discuss here is the ordering of the Tense and Agr projections in the tree. I am going to take the position of Belletti (1988) and Chomsky (1988), and argue that the Agr projection is higher than Tense. This is supported by the morphological evidence of the ordering of the Tense and Agr markers on the Verb. (1) b. Dopiero wsta-ły-śmy.; just get up-PAST/F/PL-1PL; 'We just got up.' The assumption that the main Verb moves from V⁰ through Tense up to Agr and that this movement is reflected in the order of the markers on the Verb is consistent with the Mirror Principle which requires morphological derivations to directly reflect syntactic derivations (Baker (1985)). In order to account for the second position phenomena of the person marker with categories other than Verb I will propose that the Agr features adjoin to the C⁰ node and the person inflection on the first position in the sentence is a reflection of movement to COMP rather than movement to Agr. I am also going to use the adjunction of Agr to C⁰ as a quite natural explanation for pro in Polish. I will argue that after adjunction Agr is governing pro from Left to Right and since Agr is uniform (in the sense of Jaeggli and Safir (1989)) it can license pro in Polish.

Sjursen, Helene. "Western policy-making in the Polish crisis (1980-83) : the problem of coordination." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1997. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2477/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the Western states responded to the Polish crisis (1980-83), both severally and collectively, with particular reference to their capacity for coordinated action. The thesis concentrates on the interaction between the major Western states (France, the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States) inside the broader Western institutional framework (looking in particular at NATO, the European Community, European Political Cooperation and CoCom). It assesses the impact and relative importance of the various Western institutional networks and of longer term conflicting Western aims in Poland for the success and failure of coordination. It also analyses the relevance of wider transatlantic disputes over detente for coordination. It is argued that the domestic Polish crisis gradually spilled over into East-West and West-West relations, ultimately triggering one of the most serious crises in the history of the Western alliance. The thesis is different from that of other studies of international crises in that most such studies concentrate on relations between governments who identify each other as "enemies", whereas the main concern here is with relations within one "enemy camp". Highlighting the political and economic, as well as security dimensions to the crisis, the thesis also shows that the Western states were faced with a more complex problem than a classic foreign policy crisis. Finally, the complexity of the issues raised as a result of the Polish crisis meant that the Western states were faced not only with the problem of reconciling different and sometimes conflicting national objectives, but also with the need to reconcile contradictory economic, political and security concerns cutting across national borders. Against this backdrop the thesis argues that the problem of coordination is more complex than what is implied by the neo-realist and neo-liberal institutionalist perspectives, and that the success and failure of coordination rests with the individual states, navigating within the constraints of domestic politics, alliance politics and international [in this case East-West] relations.

Abstract:
Situated at the crossroads of family studies and migration research, this thesis discusses the experiences of Polish migrant mothers raising their children in Germany and the United Kingdom from a gender-centred feminist perspective. The literature review chapters of this work show the scholarly works relevant to a discussion on the migrant lives of the study’s respondents as migrants, being both Poles and mothers. On the one hand, it highlights scholarly research on the processes of mobility, particularly in relation to transnationalism, migration of mothers and children, as well as the specific conditions faced by contemporary migrants from Poland to Western Europe. On the other hand, it reflects on modern families and parenting, offering in particular a feminist critique of mothering. The thesis then supplies details on the data collection and includes a discussion of the researcher’s reflexivity in the field. The empirical evidence was obtained through a qualitative, small-scale field study – a feminist inquiry using an in-depth interviewing technique. By showcasing the findings, the thesis demonstrates a range of choices that Polish mothers abroad make when it comes to raising children. The study delineates the following ideal-type models: Mother-Pole connected to the Polish heritage, Intensive Motherhood adopted as a mainstream model of Western Europe, the peripheral instances of Feminist Mothering, and, finally, the New Migrant Mothering. The latter is an original, key contribution of this thesis, illustrated by women’s stories of the transnational integrative practice of mothering that aims at hybridization of Polish and Western influences. While addressing the earlier knowledge gap, namely the absence of the voices of Polish mothers as agents of mobility, the thesis ascertains a need for acknowledging diversity in parenting practices within the contemporary intra-European transnational families.

Pieczek, Aleksandra Urszula. "Analysis of marketing strategies in Polish ports." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/445.

Abstract:
The service sector of economy is a field of growing interest to marketing research and in particular such services as provided by seaports. However, these activities have rarely been considered to date. This project consists of three parts. Firstly a review of service marketing approaches, their status and development, the nature of marketing strategies and the marketing mix had to be provided. Also the development of marketing in seaports had to be examined. The focal elements discussed were the elements of the services provided by seaports, and competition between them in the context of Poland Secondly the situation in Eastern Europe and Poland under the communist rule and during the transition had to be provided. This part examined East European economic development, focusing down upon Poland and the consequenceso f the changesi n recent years particularly for the maritime sector and its structure and ownership. Thirdly, an analysis of marketing strategies in the main international ports of Poland were developed, with particular reference to their potential users' point of view, in the context of recent economic and market changes. A conceptual model had been developed to analyse these changing strategies that resulted in a derivation of a multivariate approach (cluster, factor or conjoint analysis) to accommodate the large number and diversity of variables that are required. A structured interview approach, plus mail survey techniques were used to collect the data in direct interviews with the Polish port authorities and the operating companies. More questionnaires were distributed amongst the most important maritime companies. Problems of language, customs and accessibility to individuals and data were overcome, as the researcher is a native Pole wi * th good English and Russian skills and close contacts with port experts at the University of Gdansk. Finally analysis from the data obtained from both personal interviews and mail surveys resulted in the identification of the main, underlying constructs of. the marketing strategies in the ports of Gdansk and Gdynia as perceived by their users. Application of factor analysis indicated the existence of six main factors in"each of the ports. The results were valid and reliable and also supported on a-theoretical basis from the service marketing and port marketing literature. A discussion of the results provides implications for practitioners. The research shows that some of the elements of the marketing mix are less developed than others as seen by customers. It can help marketing managers to alter their strategies and better satisfy customers' desires. Furthermore, implications for theory development, research methodology and scope for future research in transition countries and port industries are discussed.

Spławski, Piotr. "Japonisme in Polish pictorial arts (1885-1939)." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2013. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/6205/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis chronicles the development of Polish Japonisme between 1885 and 1939. It focuses mainly on painting and graphic arts, and selected aspects of photography, design and architecture. Appropriation from Japanese sources triggered the articulation of new visual and conceptual languages which helped forge new art and art educational paradigms that would define the modern age. Starting with Polish fin-de-siècle Japonisme, it examines the role of Western European artistic centres, mainly Paris, in the initial dissemination of Japonisme in Poland, and considers the exceptional case of Julian Fałat, who had first-hand experience of Japan. The second phase of Polish Japonisme (1901-1918) was nourished on local, mostly Cracovian, infrastructure put in place by the ‘godfather’ of Polish Japonisme Feliks Manggha Jasieński. His pro-Japonisme agency is discussed at length. Considerable attention is given to the political incentive provided by the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese war in 1904, which rendered Japan as Poland’s ally against its Russian oppressor. The first two decades of the 20th century are regarded as the ‘Renaissance’ of Japonisme in Poland, and it is this part of the thesis that explores Japanese inspirations as manifested in the genres of portraiture, still life, landscape, representations of flora and fauna, erotic imagery, and caricature. Japonisme in graphic and applied graphic arts, including the poster, is also discussed. The existence of the taste for Japanese art in the West after 1918 is less readily acknowledged than that of the preceding decades. The third phase of Polish Japonisme (1919-1939) helps challenge the tacit conviction that Japanese art stopped functioning as an inspirational force around 1918. This part of the thesis examines the nationalisation of heretofore private resources of Japanese art in Cracow and Warsaw, and the inauguration of official cultural exchange between Poland and Japan. Polish Japonisme within École de Paris, both before 1918 and thereafter, inspired mainly by the painting of Foujita Tsuguharu, is an entirely new contribution to the field. Although Japanese inspirations frequently appeared in Polish painting of the interwar period, it was the graphic arts that became most receptive to the Japanese aesthetic at that time. The thesis includes a case study of Leon Wyczółkowski’s interbellum Japonisme, and interprets it as patriotic transpositions of the work of Hiroshige and the Japanese genre of meisho-e. Japonisme in Polish design and architecture is addressed only in the context of the creation of Polish national style in design (1901-1939). Art schools in Britain and America became important centres for Japonisme at the beginning of the 20th century. The thesis considers the case of Cracow Academy of Fine Arts, which due to radical changes introduced by its new director Julian Fałat, became an important centre for the dissemination of the taste for Japanese art in Poland.

Szewczyk, Aga. "Stepping-stone migration : Polish graduates in England." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2013. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12580.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the migrationary processes of graduates leaving their home country and their post-migration experiences and aspirations in a receiving state. Using the case study of England, findings are presented from qualitative research with Polish graduates born between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and who moved to England after 2004. It is argued that this generation of Polish migrants is particularly important given the profound impacts of socio-cultural and economic transformation in Poland, tied to the emergence of capitalism, the preparation for accession of Poland to the European Union (EU) and EU citizenship in 2004, on current debates on the geographies of graduate migration within and beyond Europe. Several important findings are revealed by the research. First, it is asserted that perspectives of migration which focus on structure-agency relations (Halfacree, 1995) need to encompass the economic and political aspects of participants sending state at the time of migration, as well as the historical influences on migration decision-making processes. Second, the discussion shows that graduate migration to another country leads to differing approaches to career and life trajectory development after migration and this thesis conceptualises these using the following typology: Continuers , Switchers and Late Awakeners , with dynamism and slippage across the groupings. Third, the findings expose graduate migrant perceptions of becoming and being highly-skilled, and the role of university preparation, and other forms of post-graduate training and potentially strategic acquisitions of citizenship for labour market confidence to compete and undertake professional jobs in Poland and England. Fourth, the thesis stresses that migration is often a first step in graduate migrants life trajectories and it emphasises the importance of a stepping-stone migration , both socially and spatially, and which is embedded within individuals' life-phases and perceptions of home and place. It is argued that this conceptual and geographic contribution to wider studies of graduate migration across countries may have wider resonance to other graduate migrant groups in Europe and beyond.

Abstract:
We study metric model theory and Polish groups as automorphism groups of separable metric structures. We expand upon the infinitary continuous logic treated in [12, 11, 23, 27] and give a new proof of the Omitting Types Theorem of infinitary continuous logic. We also find a new way of calculating the type distance of infinitary continuous logic. Furthermore, we show an infinitary version of the Ryll-Nardzewski Theorem. We also study the Roelcke completion of a Polish group and give amodel theoretical characterisation of locally Roelcke precompact Polish groups. We do this by showing that the Roelcke completion of a Polish group can be considered as a certain set of types in metric model theory. Furthermore, we develop the model theory of the Urysohn metric space U. We show that its theory TU eliminates quantifiers, that U is a prime model and that any separable model of TU is a disjoint union of isomorphic copies of U. Moreover, we show that the isometry group of U is locally Roelcke precompact by applying our result above. This was already known, but our proof is new. Finally, we study the Urysohn diversity U. Diversities are a natural generalisation of metric spaces, where positive values are assigned not just to pairs, but to all finite subsets. We develop the model theory ofU and show, among other things, that its automorphism group Aut(U) is locally Roelcke precompact, again by applying our result above. We also show that Aut(U) is a universal Polish group and that it has a dense conjugacy class. Lastly, we study the automorphism group of the rational Urysohn diversity UQ and show that Aut(UQ) has ample generics - a property with many strong implications

Andreucci, Benedetta. "Thermochronology of the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathians." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3423408.

Full text
Abstract:
The Carpathian-Pannonian region’s geodynamic evolution has been for the last decades object of debate for the scientific community. The aim of this study is to provide a further contribution to the understanding of the evolution of this territory. In fact, low temperature thermochronometry and paleotemperature studies allow to define thermal histories, which can be used, in turn, to infer the occurrence of thermal perturbations and of their extent, as well as the timing and spatial pattern of burial and exhumation. Several different processes such as B and A-type subduction, slab roll back, mantle uprise, gravitational collapse of the lithosphere have been proposed to have played a role in the evolution of this region. Reconstruction of thermal and of burial and exhumation history was then used as a tool to support or rule out some of the processes quoted above. Three low temperature thermochronometers were used to date rocks belonging to the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathians, and the results were inverted to model time-temperature histories. Thermal histories were then integrated with observations on the structural and topographic setting of the region and with data regarding the thermal structure of the lithosphere and discussed to extrapolate constrains on burial and exhumation. Finally a compilation of the thermochronometry datasets referred to the study area, integrated with previously published geophysical data were used to discuss their consistency with the different geodynamic processes proposed for the Carpathian Pannonian region. The results indicate that samples of the thrust belt were heated to variable temperatures, generally lower than 165°C and cooled to surface temperature between the Early and the Late Miocene. Since no regional heat flow transients affected the Carpathian thrust belt in Miocene time, its thermal history has to be entirely ascribed to burial and exhumation history. Three sectors, characterized by different burial-exhumation histories and topographic, structural and geophysical features were identified in the study region. Burial depths become more homogeneous E-ward. Exhumation is interpreted to have occurred by erosion of the wedge during thrusting in the western sector (23-10 Ma), by erosion and tectonic denudation during post-thrusting extension in the central sector (10-6 Ma) , and by erosion of the wedge during post thrusting uplift in the eastern sector (12-6 Ma). These exhumation processes appear to be consistent with models for the evolution of the Carpathian-Pannonian region that do not comprise slab-related dynamics, such as that based on gravitational collapse. It also appears burial-exhumation history of the Ukrainian Carpathians reflects the regional dynamics of the Carpathian-Pannonian region, whereas that of the Polish Carpathians mainly depends on crustal processes.

Abstract:
This thesis is a presentation of the naturalistic speech of Polish migrants living in the United Kingdom and pays particular attention to the linguistic phenomena which r~sult from Polish-English language contact, with code-switching being the chief focus of this thesis. In this study I first present the phenomena in accordance . with Muysken's (2000) typology of code-switching and. then analyse them from syntactic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic perspectives. Specifically,· I explain why insertional switching is the predominant in the Polish community in the U K. I also track correlations between the occurrence and frequency of particular forms of codeswitching and (extra)1ingusitc variables such as length of stay and native/foreign language dominance and conclude that both language dominance and length of stay are important for the character of Polish-English code switching. A separate chapter of th is work is devoted to the switching of English disfluency markers on the example of the marker urn used by Polish speakers. Using pragmatic, auditory and acoustic analysis I prove that more frequent users of code-switching also tend to use English disfluency markers in their Polish and that the use of disfluency markers and other language contact phenomena occurring in the speech of Polish migrants living in the UK often overlap - particularly in the case of long-term migrants and second generation migrants.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis, "General Sikorski and the Polish Government in Exile 1939-43: A Study of Polish Internal Émigré Politics in Wartime", seeks to examine the impact of Polish 'domestic' politics on wartime diplomacy in exile. Foreign policy naturally dominated the exile agenda, but this thesis considers the extent to which internal politics affected the Polish government's ability to pursue its wartime and post-war aims. The thesis considers whether internal divisions in exile and in the Polish resistance undermined national unity and diverted attention away from the war effort to the anticipated power-struggle after liberation. It assesses the degree to which domestic opposition hampered Sikorski's ability to achieve rapprochement with the USSR, the contribution his critics in the Polish army and wartime administration made to the collapse of his Soviet strategy and the extent to which Sikorski's policies failed because they constituted too blatant a contradiction of what the majority of Poles perceived as national traditions or national interests. It also considers whether his inability to impose his vision of post-war Poland on his compatriots destroyed the prospects of a new era of Polish- Soviet relations after liberation. Within this context, the thesis argues the impact of national history and tradition on exile foreign and 'domestic' policy. It assesses the consequences of key features of Polish interwar politics and society on politics in exile. It also examines the general nature of 'politics in exile', the interplay of Polish exile 'domestic' and foreign policy, and the nature and consequences of Sikorski's leadership. Sikorski came to power with a unique opportunity to unite the Poles in the fight for liberation. This thesis examines the impact on Polish history and the history of the Second World War of his failure to achieve this aim.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is contemporary Polish playwriting after Poland's accession to the European Union in 2004. From a broad reading of plays by many new writers, four playwrights were selected for study on the basis of prominence and artistic merit: Pawel Demirski, Dorota Maslowska, Malgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk and Przemys law Wojcieszek. Their plays were studied as texts and in performance, and twelve main plays became the focus of closer analysis. The thesis identifies and examines three major concurrent themes in the works of these playwrights. Remembering versus forgetting the past is discussed through the lens of selected aspects of memory studies, including Nora's lieux de mémoire, Hirsch's postmemory and Assman's mnemohistory. The playwrights are shown to share an endorsement of the de-politicisation of collective memory and to advocate a cessation of the passing down of trauma to post-war generations. The human body is highlighted as another concurrent thematic concern and is illuminated by certain tenets of Catholic doctrine as well as Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology. The playwrights' rejection of the tabooisation of the body is demonstrated and the shared notion of the body as both sentient and unifying is exemplified. Social marginalisation is examined as the final concern, with an emphasis on the notion of the 'other', particularly in relation to socio-economic status, sexuality, and religious beliefs. The plays are shown to support and promote a rejection of the myth of homogeneity in favour of openness to diversity. Major dramatic techniques are then closely examined. It is demonstrated that the plays share traits with Lehmann's theory of postdramatic theatre, including a rejection of Aristotelian unities. Key commonalities are evidenced, particularly comedy, bad language, intertextualities with the outside world, and an engagement with Polish social realities. The playwrights' approach to the spectator as a socio-political being is shown to be of paramount importance.
