Abstract:
In this paper, we aim to analyze Memórias de Aldenham House, written by Antonio Callado. In this novel, the author develops historical questions involving the imperialist policies practiced in England. By considering the typical narrative techniques used in detective story telling, Callado builds a sort of gender parody and illustrates the true crime behind the official report, thus leading the reader to have a critical perspective on reality. Antonio Callado emphasizes the representation of the symbolical violence resulting from truculent practices held by Latin American dictators after the World War II. The novel is, then, perceived as a post-traumatic memory writing of Latin American history.

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: literatura brasileira contemporânea; literatura policial; Gustavo Ávila; tríade policial clássica; desestabilização do gênero policial.Abstract: The present article aims to analyze the destabilization of the classic detective genre in O sorriso da hiena, a contemporary Brazilian detective novel published by Gustavo Ávila in 2017, to highlight delineations of the characters that make up the expected configuration of the classic crime fiction triad: detective-criminal-victim. Thus, the theoretical framework consists of texts that discuss the detective genre, from its genesis to updates of this type of narrative, especially regarding the mentioned triad, such as França & Sasse (2016), Leidens (2019), Marques (2016), Massi (2011), Oliveira (2016), and Todorov (2006). Therefore, from the interpretative analysis of the excerpts from the novel, there are comments made to highlight how the characters of the narrative are described, and how they relate to each other throughout the novel, leading to their reconfiguration. The analyses indicate, therefore, that the elements that compose the classic crime fiction triad are not rigid or fixed categories, but rather elements that are very flexible and adaptable to different times, cultures, and narratives. Hence, a destabilization, even if partial, of the classic whodunit genre, is illustrated, considering that Ávila’s work presents delineations and relationships among characters that can be described as innovative. In this sense, the research enables unexpected reflections that were not observed in classic works, which testifies to the inventiveness of the genre, always prone to some kind of evolution, both at the formal and thematic levels. Keywords: Brazilian contemporary literature; crime fiction; Gustavo Ávila; classic crime fiction triad; destabilization of crime fiction.

Abstract:
Detective fiction as parodic reformulation of genre’s defining patterns has a long history in the Latin American tradition: Borges, Bioy Casares, Soriano, Levrero, Ibargüengoitia, etc. Besides, the evolution of Latin American detective genre has always been characterized by a progressive focalization in the social aspects over the detective story line which has served as a mask to depict in a critical way the flaws of the region’s societies and governments. In nowadays Cuba it could be highlighted the crime narrative of parodic slant by Lorenzo Lunar Cardedo. Among the major features of Lunar Cardedo’s style there are the marginal atmospheres, the stylization of popular speech, the intertextuality, the humor, the parody, and the social criticism. This article focuses on the parodic, intertextual and satiric aspects of his work, particularly discernible in the novel Proyecto en negro (2013), in which the author emphasizes – in opposition to the official discourse – the perpetuation of corrupt, chauvinist, racist, and homophobic behaviors in contemporary Cuba, while relaxing the genre formula limits in order to follow a much more irreverent path within the new Latin American detective fiction.

Abstract:
We propose a critical reading of the novels Nick Carter se divierte mientras el lector es asesinado y yo agonizo (1975), La banda del ciempiés (2010) and Dejen todo en mis manos (1996), which make up the crime trilogy, by Mario Levrero. The Uruguayan builds his figure as a "rare" author from the use of marginalized materials and disciplines, among them, the crime fiction that goes through his writing project. However, in a strategy of dissimulation, he points out it as a type of closed and commercial literature that closes the transformation of the reader. We argue that, through parody, display of artifice, or hyperbolic variants of paranoid fiction, Levrero sets out to subvert these boundaries. The writer appropriates the crime novel to develop another search which, while dismantling the protocols of the genre, enables its possibilities of modifying the subject. Against the crime of the transcendent by modern society that deprives the subject of luminous experiences, his poetics pursues contact with the Spirit or the Unconscious, interchangeable in his worldview. He thus manifests his program that conceives writing as a therapeutic device.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The rise of regional detective novels in Europe has generated an expanding interest, as is evident in the proliferation of scholarship on works in this genre. One type of crime narrative, however, escapes this rule: Corsican crime fiction. Because it is part of unique editorial, literary, cultural, political, and linguistic dynamics, Corsican crime fiction raises important questions about the future of regional literature within a national, international, and transnational literary canon. This article proposes a genesis of the Corsican detective novel; through a recontextualization of the genre in both the literary context of the island and the generic context of the detective novel, it will demonstrate how the serialization effect typical of crime fiction, coupled with the intrinsic plurality of the notion of authenticity, allows Corsican crime fiction to redefine the codes of the traditional detective novel and bring a new facet to the broader notion of Mediterranean Noir in its insular form known as the pulizziesca.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study overviews literature regarding the development of Indonesian, language endangerment, language attitudes, and ideologies, as well as emerging teaching methodologies to provide the context of the current challenges facing Indonesia’s sociolinguistic situation. The establishment of Bahasa Indonesia as the national language helped unite the country but, at the same time, created new challenges for addressing linguistic diversity. The dissemination of English education has complicated the situation further and has been associated with exacerbating inequalities. These inequalities have not only had consequences for linguistic diversity but also for access to employment and education. Language policies continue to treat language as static rather than dynamic processes which involve one’s communicative repertoire. We argue that while some language scholars studying Indonesia have begun to acknowledge the advantages of translingual/multilingual education, there still remains under-addressed obstacles to its successful implementation and the risk of co-option for ulterior purposes. We conclude that advocacy for language policy in Indonesia should be a part of a broader effort to address the needs of marginalized communities and harness students’ diverse and dynamic linguistic repertoires to improve the quality of learning and inclusivity in the classroom

Abstract:
A division between urban and rural settlements/areas has been traditionally applied in statistical reporting worldwide. The reports applying these terms have been used to create and implement development policies and measures. However, international policies such as those featured by the European Union (EU), as well as national policies, also recognize, define and render transitional types of settlements. The Program of Implementation of the Spatial Plan of the Republic of Serbia (2010) called for a new definition of the term "settlement" determined by new criteria for a settlement typology by the end of 2015. Except for theoretical contributions, this task has not been completed yet. At the same time, a trichotomous settlement typology has been recommended to Serbia by the EU as a result of the accession process. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze and discuss a new settlement categorization, taking into account considerations on the number of categories, number of variables, choice of variables and territorial level for data collection. These aspects are empirically tested on a data set collected through the Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) in Serbia. The data are analyzed using two approaches: descriptive and cluster analysis. A parallel with other countries and theoretical recommendations is drawn in the discussion, based on which some recommendations are presented.

Abstract:A Brief History of Seven Killings, by Marlon James, is a polyphonic novel that depicts the linguistic varieties spoken by its main characters and narrators. Particularly, it uses eye dialect to portray the deviations from the standard norm that Jamaican English represents. This paper studies the features of this variety that come up in the novel, as well as different strategies for translating dialect in literary texts, and publishing companies’ policies regarding this issue. Abstract:
Ireland and Iceland, both (semi-)peripheral islands in relation to Europe's core hegemonic capitalism, once shared similar farming systems based on small holdings and rotational grazing. Today, however, agriculture looks increasingly different in each nation, for at critical junctures their agriculture policy decisions took radically divergent paths. This paper will examine Irish writer John McGahern's That They May Face the Rising Sun and the Icelandic novel Independent People by Hálldor Laxness as farming novels that ultimately stand as responses to these agricultural policies during the periods they were made. It will contend that, given each author's experience in farming, the novels must be read as acts of political intent meant to provide warnings against productivist policies and the loss of social and rural capital they generate. In connecting these works to the specific agricultural policies enacted and practiced at the time of their writing, a form of resistance will be brought to light that has been overlooked thus far in their registration as world literature.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Universal picking (UP), or reliable robot grasping of a diverse range of novel objects from heaps, is a grand challenge for e-commerce order fulfillment, manufacturing, inspection, and home service robots. Optimizing the rate, reliability, and range of UP is difficult due to inherent uncertainty in sensing, control, and contact physics. This paper explores “ambidextrous” robot grasping, where two or more heterogeneous grippers are used. We present Dexterity Network (Dex-Net) 4.0, a substantial extension to previous versions of Dex-Net that learns policies for a given set of grippers by training on synthetic datasets using domain randomization with analytic models of physics and geometry. We train policies for a parallel-jaw and a vacuum-based suction cup gripper on 5 million synthetic depth images, grasps, and rewards generated from heaps of three-dimensional objects. On a physical robot with two grippers, the Dex-Net 4.0 policy consistently clears bins of up to 25 novel objects with reliability greater than 95% at a rate of more than 300 mean picks per hour.

Abstract:
The article examines representations of significant historical events related to the history of Kazakhstan at the beginning of the 20th century in fiction and the aesthetics of artistic decision. The main purpose of the research work is to study historical novels published after the independence of Kazakhstan, which contain events such as persecution, famine and colonial plunder caused by the brutal policies of the Soviet government in the early 20th century. At the same time, the problem of historical knowledge and artistic decision in novels based on historical events of this period is considered. The practical significance of the research topic is that the policy of mass conquest and cleansing of the Russian colonial Kazakh steppe, as well as the permanent expulsion of the people living there from their land, began in the first half of the 19th century. In the 20s of the twentieth century, such absurd policies of the Soviet government as the October Revolution, “Little October” in Kazakhstan, artificial famine called confiscation and mass collective farming, reprisals against the Reds, became the basis of the historical novel. At the same time, it is very important to study novels that describe these significant historical events of the Kazakh people in artistic language. The objective of the research work is to study historical novels that expose the atrocities of the Soviet regime against the Kazakh people. In fulfillment of this duty, among the novels that raised this topic, S. Elubay’s trilogy“Akboz uy”, Beksultan Nurzhekeuly’s novel “ay, dunie-ay” and A. Tarazi’s novel “zhaza” are analyzed. The research method is to name many novels that expose the crimes of the Soviet regime, analyze and summarize their artistic achievements. The article also used research methods such as analysis, comparison and discussion. The novelty of the research result lies in the fact that Russian colonialism is one of the darkest periods in the life of the Kazakh people, years full of terrible suffering that have become indelible history. Historical novels that reveal the reality of this pitiful condition of the people, the crime of this man-made massacre, are deeply analyzed in a comprehensive scientific style with a special theme. And the article also analyzes the relationship and skills of the writer in the one-sided acceptance of historical knowledge and artistic decisions.

This study examines the extent to which ARL academic libraries collect graphic novels. Using a core list of 176 titles developed from winners of major comics industry awards and a library-focused “best of” list, the holdings of 111 ARL academic libraries were searched using the libraries’ online catalogs. Results suggest that most of the libraries studied do not aggressively collect graphic novels. Also examined were associations between date of publication, prior serialization, overall collection size, monograph budget, and ARL ranking and graphic novel holdings. To better serve scholarly research in this area of increasing interest, libraries will need to reexamine their collecting policies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article traces both the centrality and fragility of the figure of the heterosexual white male to the moral and ideological core of the apartheid regime. Through a comparative reading of Zakes Mda's The Madonna of Excelsior (2002) and Gerald Kraak's Ice in the Lungs (2006), the article examines how apartheid's Immorality Act functioned as the legislative mechanism to produce and police heteronormative whiteness. The randomness and unpredictability of sexual desire in both historical novels expose the tenuousness of this idealised heteronormative whiteness that lay at the centre of the apartheid project. Situated within the moral panic and political turmoil of the 1970s, the novels identify sex as a powerful lens through which to read the history of apartheid. While Mda's satirical novel focuses on transgressive interracial sexual desire, Kraak's realist text explores same-sex desire and intimacy. My reading of the two novels engages with the political history of apartheid's sexual policing and insists on the inextricable entanglement of its heteronormative and racial supremacist provisions. The traditional ideological centrality of the vulnerable white woman is displaced in the novels by white men whose transgressive sexual desires for black women (in Mda's novel) and other white men (in Kraak's) refuse the certainty and naturalness of heteronormative whiteness.

The new police novel in Spain is currently one of the most consumed and recognized genres by readers. Abstract:
It is crucial that users are empowered to use the functionalities of a robot to creatively solve problems on the fly. A user who has access to a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based robot may want to use the robot's autonomy and their knowledge of its behavior to complete new tasks. One way is for the user to take control of some of the robot's action space through teleoperation while the RL policy simultaneously controls the rest. However, an out-of-the-box RL policy may not readily facilitate this. For example, a user's control may bring the robot into a failure state from the policy's perspective, causing it to act in a way the user is not familiar with, hindering the success of the user's desired task. In this work, we formalize this problem and present Imaginary Out-of-Distribution Actions, IODA, an initial algorithm for addressing that problem and empowering user's to leverage their expectation of a robot's behavior to accomplish new tasks.

Abstract:
A novel coronavirus (nCoV) pandemic named as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged from Wuhan, Hubei, China in December 2019, spread in almost all continents, countries, territories across the world and became a threat to human population. Some reports of ocular infections along with respiratory infection in the patients of COVID-19 were also reported during this pandemic. The ocular manifestation of this virus has not completely been established yet; hence more research is needed to confirm the association of SARS-CoV-2 with ocular infections. However few reports have already been published about the association of corona virus infections in various animals. Clinical symptoms such as conjunctivitis, retinitis, and anterior uveitis are documented in feline and murine models, which on diagnosis were proved due to the corona virus infections. In this review article, some evidences of the association of SARS-CoV-2 with ophthalmic infections in the current pandemic and some published reports of corona virus infections in some animals has been briefly highlighted. Simultaneously we have tried to explain briefly about some research ideas that may establish the ocular association of this virus. We have also tried to suggest some new visitor’s policies in ophthalmic settings and some preventive measures those can be obeyed by an Ophthalmologist and other associated staffs during consultation to prevent themselves and to break spread of infections. We hope that, this article will inspire some researchers and Ophthalmologists to establish the exact pathophysiology behind the SARS-CoV-2 infections in ocular system.

Abstract:
Policy making to promote more sustainable development is a complex task due in part to the large number of both stakeholders and potential policies. Policy feasibility testing provides a guide to the viability and practicality of policy implementation and forms an important part of an evidence based policy making process. An extensive literature review has identified no standardized approach to feasibility testing. This paper addresses this knowledge gap by describing a novel method using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) for feasibility testing of policies aimed at increasing the sustainability of towns and villages in Ireland. Feasibility results are provided for 40 frequently cited policy interventions tested for 18 settlements in Ireland. Policies were selected in the arenas of transport, food, housing and urban form, energy, waste and water. Policies are feasibility tested through analysis of operational evidence from both quantitative and qualitative data sources. Following testing, policies are ranked in terms of feasibility. This research examines the effectiveness of local and national level policies and the importance of both local community involvement and central government regulation in policy success. The inter-settlement variation in feasibility testing scores prioritises policy selection and aims to reduce cherry-picking of policies to support the viewpoints of the decision maker. Although developed for an Irish urban context the methods described here may have applicability elsewhere.

This article offers a critical review of how migrant smuggling arises out of restrictive migration policies and how it has become increasingly sophisticated and professionalized. Reflecting on the innovative empirical findings presented in the contributions to this volume of The ANNALS, I highlight how migration control has hardened borders, disrupted cross-border flows of goods and people, and transformed local economies. Understanding better the relationship between migration control policies and migrant smuggling and the social and moral nature of the agent-customer transactions has important implications for the policies adopted to address irregular migration and migrant smuggling on both sides of the Atlantic.
