Full textThe genus Ptychogaster POMEL, 1847 (REPTILIA, TESTUDINES) belongs to the family Geoemydidae and existed from the Middle-Eocene until the Upper-Miocene in Central Europe. Ptychogastrids were terrapins with, depending on the species, more or less terrestrial/amphibian way of living. Substantial characteristics of the genus are the mobile posterior lobe of the plastron, the early ancylosis of the bony shell, the testudinid neural series and the distinct shape of the epiplastral lip. During the long research history it came, due to the high individual variability, to the nomination of numerous synonyms and nomina dubia. In this thesis the validity of 21 species is assumed whereat 2 new species are introduced. Synonyms (14) and nomina dubia (7) are illustrated. The known European Ptychogaster sites are listed and a key to the species is presented. Functional anatomy and osteology of the genus are depicted in detail. Stratigraphic and geographic distributions as well as the paleoecology of Ptychogaster are described. The two new Ptychogaster-species are named Ptychogaster bavaricus n.sp. and Ptychogaster suntgowensis n.sp..

Philadelphia is a city that constantly gazes back toward its eighteenth-century past. Many of its historic sites rely on legends from the era of the American founding fathers in order to attract visitors. The Powel House, an historic house museum that was once the home of Philadelphia's last colonial and first post-revolutionary mayor Samuel Powel, fits into this category. Yet for The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, the consortium that manages the Powel House, there is a pressing need for an expanded audience and increased funding, and the story of the Patriot Mayor does not provide enough fuel to achieve these goals. This essay examines some of the Powel House's lesser-known narratives. It suggests that for historic house museums such as the Powel House that are bound to constricted historical eras, an exploration of the house's entire history is a route toward uncovering new strategies for audience engagement. The essay isolates three specific narratives from the early twentieth century, and contemplates how each individual story can be leveraged for Landmarks' broader goals.

Full textThe broomrape (Phelipanche ramosa L. Pomel) strictly relies on nutrient uptake from phloem elements of its host plant. In France, its adaptation to winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. ) results in a major agronomical problem in the most infested regions. Considering the current guidelines of significant reduction in nitrogen inputs and the importance of nitrogen nutrition on oilseed rape productivity, this work aims to demonstrate the role of nitrogen (and other associated minerals : sulfur and phosphore) in the installation and functioning of this plant - parasitic plant interaction. Thus, the beneficial effect of nitrogen fertilization on the production and/or exudation of a major germination stimulant of broomrape seeds, the 2-PEITC, in oilseed rape rhizosphere, as well as on the rapeseed sensibility to broomrape has been here demonstrated. The analysis of the global nitrogen fluxes (15N isotope tracing and amino acid profiling) clarified the impact of parasitism on the nitrogen remobilization and amino acid accumulation patterns in the different compartments of the interaction. Analysis of transfered compounds from the host toward the parasite and accumulated in it has underlined the importance of amino acids and particularly of Gln as long-distance nitrogen carrier, but has also highlighted the role of specific compounds of rapeseed, SMCSO and glucosinolates, in this interaction, and of Asn in nitrogen remobilisation into the parasite

Full textOver the past decade, Phelipanche ramosa, a weedy parasitic plant (broomrape), has been increasingly infesting winter oilseed rape fields in France. Elite lines have shown different responses in P. Ramosa infested fields, suggesting that genetic variability might be available for breeding programmes. Ten WOSR genotypes selected for their contrasting response in field experiments were analysed using hydroponic and greenhouse co-culture experiments to determine the components of resistance. While no total resistance was identified, some partial resistance mechanisms were observed : a low induction of P. Ramosa seed germination by host roots, a limitation of parasite attachments on root systems, and the induction of a delayed or even disturbed growth of tubercles, minimising and delaying parasite emergence from the soil. The possible induction of resistance mechanisms in oilseed rape by BTH, an elicitor of natural plant defences, was also studied in order to identify defence pathways induced in roots upon leaf treatment. The cDNA-AFLP expriment revealed that BTH signal applied on leaves did not induce a transcriptomic response in oilseed rape roots. However, BTH, directly applied on roots, induced the expression of PR1, a gene marker of the SA signalling pathway, and prevented P. Ramosa attachments. Similarly, another elicitor compound, the laminarin extracted from the algae Laminaria digitata, induced a reduction of broomrape attachments when applied by soil drench but not by leaf spray

Full textAs a consequence of its incapacity to carry out photosynthesis, Phelipanche ramosa turns out to be fully dependent on the photosynthates from the host plant and due to its obligatory parasitic lifestyle this plant is responsible for considerable devastations. The development of broomrape relies on its capacity to establish connection with the phloem of the host and to become a competitive sink organ. In this context, the use of a phloem tracer demonstrated the existence of a symplasmic continuum at the host-parasite interface and, that the phloem unloading in various sinks tissues of P. Ramosa is mainly an apoplamic type. The main actors involve in transport (SUT = sucrose transporter) and sucrose metabolism (invertases and sucrose synthases) were identified. Using molecular approaches, immunolocalization, and in situ hybridization, we demonstrated the implication of some of these actors in major processes, such as the long-distance transport of sucrose and its unloading in sink organs (PrSUT1 and PrSUT3), hexose accumulation via a vacuolar acid invertase (PrSAI1), the tracheid differentiation and the starch synthesis via sucrose synthases (PrSUS1 and PrSUS2, respectively). Other markers, such as the isopenthenyl transferase PrIPT and the cytokinin oxidase PrCKX, would play a role in the hormonal balance of broomrape and would contribute to control its sink strength. All of these genes/proteins which are essential to the development of P. Ramosa are then putative good targets in biotechnological strategies to control broomrapes

In recent years, there has dramatic proliferation of research concerned with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The RFID technologies are getting considerable attentions not only from academic research but also from the applications of enterprise. One of most important issues of applications, prevailing throughout the last few decades of RFID application research is the indoor position location. Many researchers have used varied technologies to perform the object of indoor position location tracking. In our research, we will purpose a new method using RFID tags to perform indoor position location tracking. This method uses Received Signal Strength (RSS) to collect signal strength from reference tags beforehand, and then using signal strength to set up Power Level areas of ranges by reference tags. Next, using signal strength from reference tag to match signal strength by track tags. Finally, when track tags is set up into indoor environments, it will find out the position of neighboring reference tags by fuzzy set theory, and using arithmetic mean to make a calculation of the position location values, by this method to Figure down track tags position location. We conduct experiment to prove our methodology can provide a better accuracy than LANDMARC system.

Full textSet in late eighteenth-century Philadelphia, covering the American revolutionary and the early republican eras, this thesis explores three major and interrelated themes: material culture, sociability, and female agency. It focuses on Elizabeth Willing Powel, a privileged and educated woman of Philadelphia, and on the ways she projected herself to society through the material environment of her house –Powel House - and through her correspondence. Elizabeth Powel was renown for her intellect, her conversations and her hostess qualities. This project explores the interaction between an elite woman and her material environment during the eventful revolutionary and post-revolutionary era, and how material culture conveyed a social, cultural and political stance. By a careful analysis of Elizabeth Powel's correspondence - with a particular attention to her discourse on women's social role, female education, politics, and goods - this thesis observes Elizabeth's social interactions and self-presentation to society. It also explores how material culture and epistolary activities provided Elizabeth with means of agency, and ways to participate to late eighteenth-century American society, then undergoing crucial transformations.
