Abstract:

Abstract:
Ethnopharmacological Relevance. Haloxylon scoparium Pomel is a herbal medicine traditionally used for treating scorpions and snakebite, diabetes, and stomachache as well as several other diseases. No systematic study of the potential toxicity of the plant has been described. Aim of the Study. The current study is aimed at assessing the potential toxicity of Haloxylon scoparium Pomel through the acute and subacute toxicity tests. Materials and Methods. Acute toxicity test was performed on Swiss albino mice at a single oral dose of 1-10 g/kg for 14 consecutive days. General behavioral adverse effects, mortality, and latency of mortality were determined. In the subacute study, the Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extract was administered orally at doses of 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg daily for 30 days to Wistar rats. Body weight and selected biochemical and hematological parameters were determined at the end of the experiment. Sections of livers and kidneys were removed for histological studies. Results. Acute toxicity study showed that the oral LD50 value of Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extract was 5000 mg/kg. The subacute toxicity study of Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extract at doses 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg did not produce any observable symptoms of toxicity and no significant variation in body weight, organ weights, food, and water consumption or mortality in all treated rats. However, the administration of the Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extract to rats at 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg showed a significant decrease in platelets. Moreover, only at the highest dose (2000 mg/kg), the extract caused a significant increase in red blood cells and hemoglobin. Our results showed that subacute treatments with Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extract at doses of 1000 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg significantly elevated alkaline phosphatase and triglycerides. Histological studies showed that the subacute treatments of rats with Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extracts, at the doses 1000 and 2000 mg/kg, induced some histopathological changes in the livers but a slight changing in kidneys. Conclusion. Our results indicated low acute toxicity of the aqueous extract of Haloxylon scoparium Pomel. Furthermore, daily oral administration of Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extract caused some damages to the livers of rats treated with high doses, expressed by an increase in some enzyme activities such as ALP. Regarding the renal function, we did not find remarkable toxicity in the subacute treatment with Haloxylon scoparium Pomel extracts at doses 1000 and 2000 mg/kg. However, further toxicity assessments should be done to ascertain the safety or the toxicity of this valuable plant species “Haloxylon scoparium pomel” in subchronic treatments.

Abstract:
In die tijd publiceerde hij enkel onder pseudoniemen.________Common ground between two careers in journalism: Albert Van de Poel and Rob Van RoosbroeckThis article deals with the common ground between the careers of two Flemings. Common experiences, parallel ideological developments and personal contacts constitute the subject of our research. This sheds light on a previously unknown and at the same time very human episode of the Flemish movement. Both protagonists in this story were born on Flemish territory in 1898; both were sensitive to the unfair treatment of the Flemish people by the French speaking elite, and during the First World War both dedicated themselves to the Flemish cause.Consequently they both suffered severely during the post-war repression. Van de Poel found a refuge in the Netherlands where he completed his studies and started a career in journalism. Van Roosbroeck on the other hand, launched himself into political life and took university courses in history. Whilst Van de Poel specialised his journalistic interests in the tense relationship between the Netherlands and Belgium, Van Roosbroeck, on the other hand, concentrated more on reporting on international relationships.During the Second World War, however, their paths suddenly took very divergent directions: Van de Poel had to spend more than two years in the concentration camp Neuengamme near Hamburg, whilst Van Roosbroeck became a member of the Flemish SS and became deeply involved in collaboration. After the war he also fled to the Netherlands and for seven years he went into hiding with Van de Poel in Breda. During that period he only published under a pen name.

Abstract:
Abstract The origin of the word polder is contested. The older theories derive polder from Dutch pol (‘sod of grass, top, head, higher piece of land’, cognate with English poll(e) and Middle-Low-German pol(le)) or from Dutch poel (‘puddle, pond of still water’; cognate with German Pfuhl, English pool and Middle-Low German pōl(e)/pūl). In this article the author will review the etymological explanations and offer new support for a connection with poel. The original meaning of polder must have been ‘a land covered in puddles, wetland, marshy ground’.

Abstract:
The genus Ptychogaster POMEL, 1847 (REPTILIA, TESTUDINES) belongs to the family Geoemydidae and existed from the Middle-Eocene until the Upper-Miocene in Central Europe. Ptychogastrids were terrapins with, depending on the species, more or less terrestrial/amphibian way of living. Substantial characteristics of the genus are the mobile posterior lobe of the plastron, the early ancylosis of the bony shell, the testudinid neural series and the distinct shape of the epiplastral lip. During the long research history it came, due to the high individual variability, to the nomination of numerous synonyms and nomina dubia. In this thesis the validity of 21 species is assumed whereat 2 new species are introduced. Synonyms (14) and nomina dubia (7) are illustrated. The known European Ptychogaster sites are listed and a key to the species is presented. Functional anatomy and osteology of the genus are depicted in detail. Stratigraphic and geographic distributions as well as the paleoecology of Ptychogaster are described. The two new Ptychogaster-species are named Ptychogaster bavaricus n.sp. and Ptychogaster suntgowensis n.sp..

Abstract:
One of the most frequently used sources of renewable energy is biomass, mainly wood biomass. Incineration is the most common technology utilizing the energy from biomass to produce heat. A byproduct of these technologies is ash, whose composition depends on the feedstock composition and the incineration technologies. Due to the high content of valuable nutrients in ash, one of the suitable option for ash utilization seems to be application into agricultural or forestry land. Therefore, it is necessary to test response of soils and plants and look for the most suitable combination of soil additive (biomass ash), and plants. Experimental part of PhD thesis was divided into the incubation experiment and the vegetation pot experiments. The incubation experiment: The efficiency of ash addition at two application rates was tested for nutrients enrichment in different soils within period of 56 days. The vegetation pot experiments: The two plants Triticum aestivum L: (three-year experiment) and Lolium perenne L. (one-year experiment) were planted in the 5L pots. Soils were treated with ash or ash combinated by superphoshate and flue gas desulfurization gypsum. For both plants, we evaluated the plant growth, biomass production and content of macro, micro and toxic elements in the biomass and in the soils.

Abstract:
History
M.A.
Philadelphia is a city that constantly gazes back toward its eighteenth-century past. Many of its historic sites rely on legends from the era of the American founding fathers in order to attract visitors. The Powel House, an historic house museum that was once the home of Philadelphia's last colonial and first post-revolutionary mayor Samuel Powel, fits into this category. Yet for The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, the consortium that manages the Powel House, there is a pressing need for an expanded audience and increased funding, and the story of the Patriot Mayor does not provide enough fuel to achieve these goals. This essay examines some of the Powel House's lesser-known narratives. It suggests that for historic house museums such as the Powel House that are bound to constricted historical eras, an exploration of the house's entire history is a route toward uncovering new strategies for audience engagement. The essay isolates three specific narratives from the early twentieth century, and contemplates how each individual story can be leveraged for Landmarks' broader goals.

Abstract:
The broomrape (Phelipanche ramosa L. Pomel) strictly relies on nutrient uptake from phloem elements of its host plant. In France, its adaptation to winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. ) results in a major agronomical problem in the most infested regions. Considering the current guidelines of significant reduction in nitrogen inputs and the importance of nitrogen nutrition on oilseed rape productivity, this work aims to demonstrate the role of nitrogen (and other associated minerals : sulfur and phosphore) in the installation and functioning of this plant - parasitic plant interaction. Thus, the beneficial effect of nitrogen fertilization on the production and/or exudation of a major germination stimulant of broomrape seeds, the 2-PEITC, in oilseed rape rhizosphere, as well as on the rapeseed sensibility to broomrape has been here demonstrated. The analysis of the global nitrogen fluxes (15N isotope tracing and amino acid profiling) clarified the impact of parasitism on the nitrogen remobilization and amino acid accumulation patterns in the different compartments of the interaction. Analysis of transfered compounds from the host toward the parasite and accumulated in it has underlined the importance of amino acids and particularly of Gln as long-distance nitrogen carrier, but has also highlighted the role of specific compounds of rapeseed, SMCSO and glucosinolates, in this interaction, and of Asn in nitrogen remobilisation into the parasite

Abstract:
The competitive environment is in turbulence and businesses are in a rapid digital and sustainable transition. This means challenges for organizations and the leadership of teams. Leadership is under uncertainties and pressure coming from inside and outside the team. Also, project team members face many stressful situations that cause uncertainty. Uncertainty stemming from the pressure of project work can be managed through social support. Projects are characterized by being time-limited and goal-oriented. For this reason, project teams face tough time pressures, which increase the workload of their members.Additionally, project teams are put together for a specific task, so their members may not have worked with each other before. A project team and even individual team members may work independently through self-organized tasks while having the same team objective. The basic nature of project work means that project team members are in a position from the beginning of a project where they can face quite a lot of uncertainty and stressful situations. In this work, social support refers to the means of interaction that alleviate the feelings of uncertainty that arise in stressful situations (Mikkola 2020). A project team tends to pay more attention to task-oriented processes, leaving less attention to relationship-centered interaction processes (DePoel et al. 2014), which include social support. Social support is known to have several positive effects in working life (Reinardy 2009).The goal of this research is to describe the perceptions and experiences of team members about social support. The following aspects of social support were analyzed: How is social support and its relevance understood? What factors promote and hinder social support? In this article social support is described from the perspective of project team members in working life. Because social support is constructed and mediated through interaction between project team members, it was essential to look at it through its manifestation. The research setting in this research is qualitative because it describes the team members’ perceptions and experiences. The goal of this research was to collect genuine opinions on this topic, so thematic individual interviews were conducted. A semi-structured thematic interview was chosen to hear people’s perceptions, which enabled a more in-depth treatment of the phenomenon. Social support’s manifestation in the project team was analyzed according to the perceptions and experiences of interviewees. The results of this research help to understand the importance of social support for project teams. The results increase understanding of how social support manifests itself in team interaction and what factors promote and hinder its delivery and application. In addition, they deepen the understanding of what social support is needed for and what implications it is seen to have from the perspective of team members.Ref.De Poel, F., Stoker, J., Van der Zee, K. 2014. Boustati, Alma. The Advantages and Disadvantage of Double Taxation Agreements for Developing Countries. Institute of Development Studies, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.143.

Abstract:
When a developing and a developed country sign Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs), its generally the case that the developing country is the one that forgoes some of its tax revenues (Braun & Fuentes, 2016). Nevertheless, developing countries enter these agreements on the assumption that this will have enough economic benefits to offset these losses (Neumayer, 2007). Besides alleviating the burden of double taxation, DTAs also have the added value of improving exchange of information, which helps combat tax evasion and avoidance (Barthel et al., 2009). One of the incentives for signing DTAs for developing countries is the increase in Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) (Neumayer, 2007). The evidence from the literature on the link between signing DTAs and increasing FDIs is very mixed, with some finding a positive impact and others finding no impact (Quak & Timmis, 2018). However, the literature points to some clear factors that drive the relationship between FDIs and DTAs. There are also studies that attempt to quantify the tax revenue loss of developing countries when they enter DTAs. All the studies find substantial negative loss, although most do not account for the potential benefit of increased FDIs (ActionAid, 2016; IMF, 2014; Janský & Šedivý, 2018; McGauran, 2013; Van de Poel, 2016). There are also other reasons for why developing countries may still commit to negotiate and enter DTAs even when the benefits are not guaranteed. This includes increasing diplomatic ties with the treaty partner and the incentive of receiving foreign aid (Braun and Zagler, 2017). The other is a prisoner’s dilemma situation. The two most prevalent DTA conventions are the OECD Model and the UN Model. The UN Model tends to be more advantageous for developing countries compared to the OECD Model (Eyitayo-Oyesode, 2020). There are many issues over which the UN Committee’s expert members from developed and developing countries disagree but developed country member are better at influencing decisions. Finally, the OECD Model is updated more frequently, resulting in the UN one being comparatively out of date (Hearson, 2015; Quak & Timmis, 2018). Generally, the literature on the impact of DTAs on developing countries’ economies is extensive. This is especially the case for the impact of DTAs on FDIs as well as on tax revenue loss. However, because of the complexity of these issues, many of the empirical studies inevitably suffer from methodological issues that make conclusive claims very difficult. Notably missing from the literature is the impact of DTAs on international trade.
