Abstract:
Individual studies on authors as different as Banksy and Bruno Schulz, Bruno Jasieński and Ro-man Dmowski, Vishal Bhardwaj and Mieczysław Berman, or Wacław Nałkowski and Alfred Döblin, show what they have in common - "indifference" to social issues. The humanistic, multi-threaded analysis of these images proves that literature, film, photography, reportage, photomon-tage, theatre, and street art always remain involved regardless of time and space.

Abstract:
South Asia is today the region inhabited by the largest number of Muslims—roughly 500 million. In the course of the Islamization process, which began in the eighth century, it developed a distinct Indo-Islamic civilization that culminated in the Mughal Empire. While paying lip service to the power centers of Islam in the Gulf, including Mecca and Medina, this civilization has cultivated its own variety of Islam, based on Sufism. Over the last fifty years, pan-Islamic ties have intensified between these two regions. Gathering together some of the best specialists on the subject, this volume explores these ideological, educational and spiritual networks, which have gained momentum due to political strategies, migration flows and increased communications. At stake are both the resilience of the civilization that imbued South Asia with a specific identity, and the relations between Sunnis and Shias in a region where Saudi Arabia and Iran are fighting a cultural proxy war, as evident in the foreign ramifications of sectarianism in Pakistan. Pan-Islamic Connections investigates the nature and implications of the cultural, spiritual and socio-economic rapprochement between these two Islams.

Abstract:
Neuromodulation is the process of altering nerve impulses through electrical or chemical mechanisms. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is one of the most diverse and rapidly expanding areas of neuromodulation. The goal of this chapter is to increase awareness of the theory, basic science, and ongoing clinical indications of PNS. The use of PNS is a natural outgrowth from traditional methods of using neurostimulation in the spinal canal. Various disease states are theoretically amenable to PNS, including headache disorders such as migraine and cluster headache. Significant and specific risks, safety concerns, and adverse events are possible with PNS, particularly without a focus on prevention.

Abstract:
The epoch in which we live is also full of communicatively difficult situations, resulting from the pace of civilisational changes, cultural and social conflicts, growing divides related to opening to the Other, with whom we are not always prepared to meet. The works and studies compiled in the present book are divided into four parts and the problems described in them focus on many communicative situations and social phenomena. The authors point the language spheres, but also many different contexts of using the natural code, such as politics, racism, gender, sexual orientation, religion, sport, disease and national or cultural difference.

Abstract:
The self-domestication hypothesis (SDH) suggests bonobo psychology evolved due to selection against aggression and in favour of prosociality. This hypothesis was formulated based on similarities between bonobos and domesticated animals. This chapter reviews the first generation of quantitative research that supports the predictions of the SDH. Similar to domestic animals, bonobos are prosocial towards strangers, more flexible with cooperative problems, more responsive to social cues and show expanded windows of development relative to their closest relatives, chimpanzees. A preliminary comparison of bonobo and chimpanzee infants is presented that suggests that when hearing a stranger, bonobos have a xenophilic response while chimpanzees have a xenophobic response. The chapter explores why the work with bonobos has implications for theories of both human and animal cognitive evolution, and why bonobos will be central in studying evolutionary processes leading to cognitive change.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the process and outcome of the revision of POA. The revision of POA had two objectives: first, spelling out the roadmap and a timeline for implementation of the revised policy postulates of NPE, 1986, and secondly taking stock of the implementation of the POA, 1986, and revising it in the light of the feedback from implementation. It critiques the contribution POA made to development of education. The most important contribution is the new district-based strategy it commended for universalization of elementary education; this strategy operationalized by DPEP and its progeny SSA spectacularly hastened the nation’s march towards universal elementary education. The Chapter describes the efforts of MHRD to implement the recommendations of the Ramamurti Committee regarding financing of higher education. It critiques the revision of fees by IITs and IIMs, the recommendations of the Punnayya Committee on the financing of Central universities and of the Swaminadhan Committee on technical education, and the implementation of those recommendations.

Zaharna, R. S. Boundary Spanners of Humanity. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190930271.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Boundary Spanners of Humanity tackles the growing severity of global problems and our strained ability to collaborate by critically re-examining two pivotal tools: communication and public diplomacy. R. S. Zaharna, a leading scholar of public diplomacy and international strategic communication, exposes the limitations of intercultural communication and state-based public diplomacy and proposes a pan-human vision of communication that can revolutionize how we communicate globally. The book reveals how dominant views of communication and public diplomacy are based on a 19th-century mindset of separateness that clashes with today’s global connectivity and human diversity. In a radical break from outdated models that divide humanity into cultural categories, Zaharna introduces a vision of humanity-centered public diplomacy featuring three complementary logics of communication. Used together, these communication logics are key to leveraging diversity, navigating connectivity, and enhancing our capacity for global collaboration. Zaharna’s innovative approach stems from decades-long, interdisciplinary research spanning ancient cosmologies, diverse intellectual heritages, contemporary social science, and emerging neuro-biological science. Boundary Spanners of Humanity provides a rich array of examples from ancient diplomacies to the Covid-19 pandemic to illustrate a vision of pan-human communication that spans our diversity and harnesses it as an essential strength in collective problem solving and global collaboration.

Abstract:
Although chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus) are closely related, their societies show surprisingly large differences in many aspects. Bonobo females, in comparison with chimpanzee females, are characterized by their gregariousness, close social association with one another, leadership and prolonged pseudo-estrus. Males are also different in their aggression between the two species; bonobo males are less aggressive than chimpanzee males and do not commit infanticide nor any other conspecific killing, which was reported in chimpanzees. This chapter investigates these differences between such closely related species and explains how bonobos achieve the peaceful nature of their society. The behavioral characteristics of female bonobos seem to contribute to the peaceful nature of bonobo society.
