Abstract:
The ultraviolet (UV)/H2O2, UV/O3, UV/peroxodisulfate (PDS) and UV/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) methods are called UV-based advanced oxidation processes. In the UV/H2O2 and UV/O3 processes, the free radicals generated are hydroxyl radicals (•OH), while in the UV/PDS and UV/PMS processes, sulfate radicals (SO4•−) predominate, accompanied by •OH. SO4•− are considered to be more advantageous than •OH in degrading organic substances, so the researches on activation of PDS and PMS have become a hot spot in recent years. Especially the utilization of UV-activated PDS and PMS in removing antibiotics in water has received much attention. Some influencing factors and mechanisms are constantly investigated and discussed in the UV/PDS and UV/PMS systems toward antibiotics degradation. However, a systematic review about UV/PDS and UV/PMS in eliminating antibiotics is lacking up to now. Therefore, this review is intended to present the properties of UV sources, antibiotics, and PDS (PMS), to discuss the application of UV/PDS (PMS) in degrading antibiotics from the aspects of effect, influencing factors and mechanism, and to analyze and propose future research directions.

Abstract:
A melt-spinnable precursor for SiC based fibers was prepared from blend polymers of polycarbosilane (PCS) and modified polymethylsilane (M-PMS). The blend polymers cured at 320°C are different from M-PMS and PCS. The ceramic yield of these blend polymers is about 83%. The C/Si ratio of M-PMS/PCS derived ceramics (pyrolyzed at 1250°C) is linear to the content of MPMS in M-PMS/PCS. After melt spinning, thermal oxidation curing, and pyrolysis, Si-C-O fibers were obtained. The diameter and the tensile strength of the resulted fibers are 16.5μm and 1.62GPa, respectively.

Abstract:
Activated zero-valent iron (Ac-ZVI) coupled with Fe3+ was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) for acid orange 7 (AO7) removal. Fe3+ was used to promote Fe2+ liberation from Ac-ZVI as an active species for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The factors affecting AO7 degradation, namely, the Ac-ZVI:Fe3+ ratio, PMS/PDS dosage, and pH, were compared. In both PMS and PDS systems, the AO7 degradation rate increased gradually with increasing Fe3+ concentration at fixed Ac-ZVI loading due to the Fe3+-promoted liberation of Fe2+ from Ac-ZVI. The AO7 degradation rate increased with increasing PMS/PDS dosage due to the greater amount of ROS generated. The degradation rate in the PDS system decreased while the degradation rate in the PMS system increased with increasing pH due to the difference in the PDS and PMS activation mechanisms. On the basis of the radical scavenging study, sulfate radical was identified as the dominant ROS in both systems. The physicochemical properties of pristine and used Ac-ZVI were characterized, indicating that the used Ac-ZVI had an increased BET specific surface area due to the formation of Fe2O3 nanoparticles during PMS/PDS activation. Nevertheless, both systems displayed good reusability and stability for at least three cycles, indicating that the systems are promising for pollutant removal.

Abstract:
Abstract In this study, the difference in oxidative capacity for removing antibiotics and the mechanism between the Cu(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/UV and Cu(II)/persulfate (PDS)/UV systems were compared under various conditions. The optimal Cu(II) concentration in the Cu(II)/PMS/UV system was 30 μM, and in the Cu(II)/PDS/UV system was 50 μM. With the PMS or PDS concentration increasing, higher tetracycline (TC) degradation in these two systems occurred. Investigation on the mechanism revealed that •OH was the primary radical in the Cu(II)/PMS/UV system, while SO4−• was the primary radical in the Cu(II)/PDS/UV system where •OH also played an important role. In these two systems, it was observed that Cu(I) was generated by PMS or PDS activated via UV illumination; however, oxygen alone could not promote TC removal. The degradation of TC was increased with the increasing pH level. In addition, TC degradation in the Cu(II)/PMS/UV system followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics model during the entire reaction period. It was found that the TC degradation kinetics in the Cu(II)/PDS/UV system can be divided into two parts (0 to 7 min and 10 to 50 min) and these two parts had good agreement with the pseudo-first-order kinetics model, respectively.

Abstract:
Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peroxydisulfate (PDS) or peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation have attracted much research attention in the last decade for the degradation of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Sulfate (SO4•−) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals are most frequently generated from catalytic PDS/PMS decomposition by thermal, base, irradiation, transition metals and carbon materials. In addition, increasingly more recent studies have reported the involvement of singlet oxygen (1O2) during PDS/PMS-based AOPs. Typically, 1O2 can be produced either along with SO4•− and •OH or discovered as the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROSs) for pollutants degradation. This paper reviews recent advances in 1O2 generation during PDS/PMS activation. First, it introduces the basic chemistry of 1O2, its oxidation properties and detection methodologies. Furthermore, it elaborates different activation strategies/techniques, including homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, and discusses the possible reaction mechanisms to give an overview of the principle of 1O2 production by activating PDS/PMS. Moreover, although 1O2 has shown promising features such as high degradation selectivity and anti-interference capability, its production pathways and mechanisms remain controversial in the present literatures. Therefore, this study identifies the research gaps and proposes future perspectives in the aspects of novel catalysts and related mechanisms.

Abstract:
Background: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is something that affects about 20% - 40% of all women. The symptoms occur one till two weeks before menstruation. The most experienced symptoms is swollen breast or stomach, irritation and anxiety. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is more severe than PMS and affect about 1,8% - 5,8%. The symptoms are more severe and may resemble a deep depression. Previous studies have proven that women with PMS or PMDD has lowered health-related quality of life. Aim: The aim was to enlighten women’s experiences of the everyday-life with PMS or PMDD, and bring attention to strategies that can facilitate women’s everyday-lives. Method: A literature study which was based on ten scientific articles with a qualitative approach was conducted. Results: The result highlights the symptoms that women experienced during PMS. The women also felt that society and their health care system did not take PMS and PMDD serious. Their experience was that they did not get the support they wanted and needed. Most of the time they lacked support from their partners. The result also found that women used different coping strategies to manage their symptoms. They took breaks and distanced themselves from their partners and the extra stress they experienced during PMS and PMDD. Conclusion: The women lack support, help and understanding that they need from their partner to manage their PMS and PMDD. Neither do they get help from the health cares system. Society has an incorrect picture of what PMS and PMDD really is. Different coping strategies are used to handle the syndrome, such as taking breaks from everyday life and all the requirements.

Abstract:
Purpose and problem statement: The purpose of this study is to identify how PMS/PMDD affects a leaders leadership. Therefore the individual and the experienced symptoms involving PMS/PMDD are studied. This to identify potential connections between the diagnoses and theories about leadership.
How is leadership affected by PMS and PMDD?  Method: The study is conducted through an inductive reasoning and qualitative interviews with six informants. The informants helped us understand the empirical field, which in order lead us to identify relevant theories for our study.  Conclusion: The study showed that leadership is affected by PMS and PMDD because of changes in the individual’s personal characteristics during the time of their diagnosis. The individual can go from being a good leader for two weeks, to seeing themselves as a bad leader the remaining two weeks. The change can be recognized by seeing positive characteristics that define a good leader change into the opposite.  Through this study it is apparent to us that there is an opportunity for further research in this subject. It can be done by performing a bigger study or by including a co-worker perspective, since a leader needs its co-workers to be able to lead.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study investigated how the problematic construct of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is sustained and perpetuated in our culture. A main effect of gender priming on the number of PMS symptoms recalled from a description suggests that priming activates relevant stereotypes, leading to selective attention to stereotype-consistent information, reinforcing the held stereotypes. An interaction between gender priming and type of description (a woman experiencing PMS, a woman experiencing headaches, or a man experiencing headaches) on the number of pathological conditions ascribed to the woman or man described was found. This suggests that gender priming has a restrictive effect on pathologizing, but further research needs to address how pathologization may function to perpetuate PMS.

Abstract:
Background Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric syndrome (PMDS) are conditions that involve a total amount of mental and / or physical premenstrual disorders for some women. These conditions are a major affliction and can lead to mental illness, long-term sick leave, somatic disorders, affected relationships and difficulties in coping with their everyday lives. However, nursing research of these women is inadequate. Research in the field of nursing has shown that self-care strengthens the patient's sense of control in both psychiatric and somatic disease states. Aim To illuminate different self-care strategies that may lead to reduced suffering for patients with premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric syndrome. Method The study is a literature review and includes 17 scientific articles that were searched through systematic database searches in PubMed and Cinahl. Selected articles were of qualitative and quantitative method to gain an increased understanding of both self-care experience and objective measures of efficiency. Results There was a variety of self-care strategies that women use and may use to varying degrees. Three categories in the form of lifestyle, psychosocial aspects and complementary therapies were created during the analysis process. The self-care strategies that has showed the strongest connection with reduced suffering at PMS or PMDS were stress reduction, regular physical activity and increased awareness of their body and their own mood.ConclusionsIn the studies, it was found that women used self-care strategies to varying degrees and that they perceived their effectiveness differently. Self-care was able to relieve the symptoms of PMS / PMDS to varying degrees and promoted the feeling of control over one's own situation. Self-care strategies can thus be a tool for reducing the suffering of PMS / PMDS.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Core Damage Frequency (CDF) and Large Release Frequency (LRF) can be greatly affected by the application of Instrumentation and Control (I&C) within the control and safety systems utilized in the operations of a nuclear power plant. It is important that the modeling of these systems be an accurate representation of the I&C design to capture the effects of the I&C on the operations of the nuclear power plant as far as control and safety that are needed for the effective and safe operation of power generation. Various sensitivities can be performed on I&C modeling in the AP1000 Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) to determine the impact on CDF. These sensitivities can be in the areas of base reliability values (probabilities), common cause failures (CCF) of software as well as common cause (CC) factors of computer modules. Insights can be found as to the effects of these CCFs by varying the modeled probabilities in the most conservative direction to determine how the model will respond. The model response, i.e., CDF and cutset importance orders will provide insights as to how sensitive I&C modeling is to CCF and how sensitive the rest of the PRA model is to I&C. Increasing failure probability of the Protection and Safety Monitoring System (PMS) and Plant Control System (PLS), and Diverse Actuation System (DAS) to explore the minimum reliability that would support favorable CDF and LRF values, as well as, the effect of total failure of the PMS (no credit taken for PMS in core damage sequences) and PLS (no credit taken for PLS in core damage sequences) on CDF values are explored. Sensitivity analyses show that the CDF increases if no credit is taken for operator actions. For AP1000, this sensitivity study indicated a decrease in dependence on operator actions over conventional nuclear plants. This conclusion is likely a result of the increased reliability of the PMS to automatically actuate the given systems and components. For this reason, the most important system is PMS, in the case where no credit is taken for PMS in core damage sequences.

Abstract:
Parallel mechanisms (PMs) with two rotational and one translational (2R1T) degrees of freedom (DOFs) have attracted much attention these years. The 2R1T PMs can be divided into various categories due to different motion patterns, such as the UP equivalent PMs, the RPR equivalent PMs, the PU equivalent PMs and the 3-PPS equivalent PMs. In this paper, the 2R1T PMs have the same motion characteristics with the 3-RSR PM are studied and synthesized. This kind of PMs can be called as 3-RSR equivalent 2R1T PMs. The 3-RSR equivalent 2R1T PMs can realize both continuous rotations about fixed axes and continuous translation along fixed directions. The constraint and motion characteristics of the 3-RSR equivalent 2R1T PMs are analyzed. The design of the branches for the 3-RSR equivalent 2R1T PMs is dealt with using the screw theory and the subchains. A group of novel 3-RSR equivalent 2R1T PMs are obtained.

Abstract:
Parallel manipulators (PMs) with multiple operation modes are novel reconfigurable PMs which use less number of actuators and can be reconfigured without disassembly. Although several classes of PMs with multiple operation modes that have the same DOF (degrees-of-freedom) in all the operation modes have been proposed, only one class of variable-DOF PMs with multiple operation modes — PMs with multiple operation modes that do not have the same DOF in all the operation modes — have been proposed so far. This paper deals with the type synthesis of variable-DOF PMs with both planar and 3T1R (or Schönflies motion which has three translational DOF and 1 rotational DOF) operation modes. The axes of rotation of the moving platform in the planar operation mode are not parallel to the axes of rotation of the moving platform in the 3T1R operation mode. At first, an approach to the type synthesis of PMs with multiple operation modes is recalled. Based on the results on the type synthesis of planar PMs and 3T1R PMs, the types of variable-DOF PMs with both planar and 3T1R operation modes are then obtained. This work can be extended to the type synthesis of other classes of PMs with multiple operation modes.

Abstract:
Partial MaxSAT (PMS) generalizes SAT and MaxSAT by introducing hard clauses and soft clauses. PMS and Weighted PMS (WPMS) have many important real world applications. Local search is one popular method for solving (W)PMS. Recent studies on specialized local search for (W)PMS have led to significant improvements. But such specialized algorithms are complicated with the concepts tailored for hard and soft clauses. In this work, we propose a dynamic local search algorithm, which exploits the structure of (W)PMS by a carefully designed clause weighting scheme. Our solver SATLike adopts a local search framework for SAT and does not need any specialized concept for (W)PMS. Experiments on PMS and WPMS benchmarks from the MaxSAT Evaluations (MSE) 2016 and 2017 show that SATLike significantly outperforms state of the art local search solvers. Also, SATLike significantly narrows the gap between the performance of local search solvers and complete solvers on industrial benchmarks, and performs better than the complete solvers on the MSE2017 benchmarks.

Full text
Abstract:
PPR-PMs (parallel manipulators) are the parallel counterparts of the 3-DOF PPR serial robots, which are composed of two P (prismatic) joints and one R (revolute) joint. For a PPR-PM, the moving platform can rotate arbitrarily about an axis undergoing a planar translation. This paper deals with the type synthesis of 3-DOF PPR-PMs. At first, virtual chains are introduced to represent the motion patterns of 3-DOF motions and relevant results from screw theory are recalled. A method is then proposed for the type synthesis of 3-DOF PPR-PMs. Using the proposed approach, the type synthesis of 3-DOF PPR-PMs is performed in three steps, namely, the type synthesis of legs for PPR-PKCs (parallel kinematic chains), the type synthesis of PPR-PKCs, and the selection of actuated joints of PPR-PMs. The three steps are dealt with in detail consequently. The characteristics of the proposed approach is that the type synthesis of legs for PPR-PKCs is reduced to the type synthesis of 3-DOF overconstrained single-loop kinematic chains and thus easy to perform. In addition to all the 3-DOF PPR-PKCs and 3-DOF PPR-PMs proposed in the literature, a number of new 3-DOF PPR-PKCs and 3-DOF PPR-PMs are identified. It is also found that there are no PPR-PMs with identical types of legs.

Abstract:
A kinematically redundant parallel manipulator (PM) is a PM whose degrees-of-freedom (DOF) are greater than the DOF of the moving platform. It has been revealed in the literature that a kinematically redundant PM has fewer Type II kinematic singular configurations (also called forward kinematic singular configurations, static singular configurations or parallel singular configurations) and/or constraint singular configurations than its non-redundant counterparts. However, kinematically redundant PMs have not been fully explored, and the type synthesis of kinematically redundant PMs is one of the open issues. This paper deals with the type synthesis of kinematically redundant 3T1R PMs (also called SCARA PMs or Schoenflies motion generators), in which the moving platform has four DOF with respect to the base. At first, the virtual-chain approach to the type synthesis of kinematically redundant parallel mechanisms is recalled. Using this approach, kinematically redundant 3T1R PMs are constructed using several compositional units with very few mathematical derivations. The type synthesis of 5-DOF 3T1R PMs composed of only revolute joints is then dealt with systematically. This work provides a solid foundation for further research on kinematically redundant 3T1R PMs.

Yermiyahu, Uri, Thomas Kinraide, and Uri Mingelgrin. Role of Binding to the Root Surface and Electrostatic Attraction in the Uptake of Heavy Metal by Plants. United States Department of Agriculture, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7586482.bard.

Abstract:
The principal accomplishment of the research supported by BARD was progress toward a comprehensive view of cell-surface electrical effects (both in cell walls [CWs] and at plasma membrane [PM] surfaces) upon ion uptake, intoxication, and amelioration. The research confirmed that electrostatic models (e.g., Gouy-Chapman-Stern [G-C-S]), with parameter values contributed by us, successfully predict ion behavior at cell surfaces. Specific research objectives 1. To characterize the sorption of selected heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) to the root PM in the presence of other cations and organic ligands (citric and humic acids). 2. To compute the parameters of a G-C-S model for heavy-metal sorption to the root PM. 3. To characterize the accumulation of selected heavy metals in various plant parts. 4. To determine whether model-computed ion binding or ion activities at root PM surfaces predict heavy-metal accumulation in whole roots, root tips, or plant shoots. 5. To determine whether measured ion binding by protoplast-free roots (i.e., root CWs) predicts heavy-metal accumulation in whole roots, root tips, or plant shoots. 6. To correlate growth inhibition, and other toxic responses, with the measured and computed factors mentioned above. 7. To determine whether genotypic differences in heavy-metal accumulation and toxic responses correlate with genotypic differences in parameters of the G-C-S model. Of the original objectives, all except for objective 7 were met. Work performed to meet the other objectives, and necessitated on the basis of experimental findings, took the time that would have been required to meet objective 7. In addition, work with Pb was unsuccessful due to experimental complications and work on Cd is still in progress. On the other hand, the uptake and toxicity of the anion, selenate was characterized with respect to electrostatic effects and the influences of metal cations. In addition, the project included more theoretical work, supported by experimentation, than was originally planned. This included transmembrane ion fluxes considered in terms of PM-surface electrical potentials and the influence of CWs upon ion concentrations at PM surfaces. A important feature of the biogeochemistry of trace elements in the rhizosphere is the interaction between plant-root surfaces and the ions present in the soil solution. The ions, especially the cations, of the soil solution may be accumulated in the aqueous phases of cell surfaces external to the PMs, sometimes referred to as the "water free space" and the "Donnan free space". In addition, ions may bind to the CW components or to the PM surface with variable binding strength. Accumulation at the cell surface often leads to accumulation in other plant parts with implications for the safety and quality of foods. A G-C-S model for PMs and a Donnan-plus-binding model for CWs were used successfully to compute electrical potentials, ion binding, and ion concentration at root-cell surfaces. With these electrical potentials, corresponding values for ion activities may be computed that are at least proportional to actual values also. The computed cell-surface ion activities predict and explain ion uptake, intoxication, and amelioration of intoxication much more accurately than ion activities in the bulk-phase rooting medium.

Abstract:
The San Joaquin Valley is identified as an area with a high level of particulate matter (PM) in the air, reaching above the federal and state clean air standards (EPA 2019). Many of the cities in the valley are classified as the most polluted cities in the United States for both particulate matter and ozone pollution (American Lung Association, 2021). To resolve this issue, alternative forms of transportation have been considered in transportation planning. In this study, active transportation mode air quality was monitored on selected Woodward Park and Old Clovis trails and urban bike lanes. Real-time aerosol monitors, and low-cost sensors were carried in a backpack on bicycles during the sampling. Researchers collected GPS data via a portable GPS technology called Tracksticks. Driving transportation mode air quality data was acquired from the roadways within the Fresno/Clovis area, spanning six sampling routes, and during intercity trips between Fresno, Berkeley, and Los Angeles, for a total of five sampling routes. ‘On-Road' (outside vehicle) monitors were installed on the roof of a vehicle while ‘In-Vehicle’ monitors were installed inside the vehicle for comparison with the particulate pollution levels in the two contrasting microenvironments. The results showed the following three main outcomes: (1) clear relationships exist among PMs of different sizes; (2) there were greater variations in air quality of bike trails and On-Road samples than backyard and In-Vehicle samples; (3) we observed significant differences in air quality inside and outside the vehicle while driving local and intercity roadways; and (4) the road trip to the Bay area revealed that San Joaquin Valley has increased ambient PM2.5 and black carbon (BC) levels compared to those in the Bay Area on every trip, regardless of the daily change of the air quality.
