Thermo-oxidative aging produces a non-uniform degradation state in PMR-15 resin. A surface layer, usually attributed to oxidative degradation, forms. This surface layer has different properties from the inner material. A set of material tests was designed to separate the properties of the oxidized surface layer from the properties of interior material. Test specimens were aged at 316°C in either air or nitrogen, for durations of up to 800 hours. The thickness of the oxidized surface layer in air aged specimens, and the shrinkage and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of nitrogen aged specimens were measured directly. The nitrogen-aged specimens were assumed to have the same properties as the interior material in the air-aged specimens. Four-point-bend tests were performed to determine modulus of both the oxidized surface layer and the interior material. Bimaterial strip specimens consisting of oxidized surface material and unoxidized interior material were constructed and used to determine surface layer shrinkage and CTE. Results confirm that the surface layer and core materials have substantially different properties.

Full textThe Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) network, which is used for public safety operation, has to evolve to the broadband solutions to satisfy the user demands in the future. In the current broadband technologies, Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard, developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), is considered one of the potential candidates for the next generation of PMR. Despite the fact that LTE supports high-speed data transmission and supports different packet sizes by using Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC), LTE is not yet optimized for low bit rate voice communication, especially in case of using LTE in Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) context. Therefore, in this dissertation, we present several new solutions for enhancing the voice capacity of LTE in the PMR context for both uplink and downlink transmission. The new propositions, based on existent LTE standard technology with adaptations, allow reducing both control and data overhead issues of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in PMR context

Full textThis thesis was prepared at IMT Atlantique, in the context of the FITNESS project. This European project aims to modernize PMR (Professional Mobile Radio) radios, used by security services. The objective is to develop a new receiver compatible with the 4 European standards, while adding new features. The contributions of this thesis to FITNESS concern the backwards compatibility of the new receiver with current standards. A reconfigurable central frequency channel selection filter was used to manage this interoperability. However, it should be noted that its bandwidth is too large and that several insufficiently attenuated communication channels are present at the A/D converters input. To relax linearity constraints and digitization margins, we propose to make the receiver aware of its spectral environment. The interest of this method has been developed in a first part of this document. A method for blind detection based on the cyclostationary properties of the communication signal has been proposed. We then use this tool to detect the presence of unwanted harmonics created during non-linear operation of the receiver. We show that it is possible to detect the operating mode of the receiver before the useful signal degradation. Finally, based on the two previous studies, we propose a method to automatically adapt the parameters of the analog receiver. This proof of concept based on a feedback loop allows a significant improvement in the bit error rate while relaxing constraints at the analog level

Full textIn aging societies, improving the mobility of disabled persons is a key challenge for this century. With an elderly population estimated at over 2 billion in 2050 (OMS 2012), the heterogeneity of disabilities is becoming more important to address. In addition, assistive devices remain quite expensive and some disabled persons are not able to purchase such devices. In this context, we propose an innovative idea using model-based automatic control approaches and model-free reinforcement learning for a Power-Assisted wheelchair (PAW) design. The proposed idea aims to provide a personalized assistance to different user without using expensive sensors, such as torque sensors. In order to evaluate the feasibility of such ideas in practice, we carry out two preliminary designs. The first one is a model-based design, where we need to exploit as much as possible the prior knowledge on the human-wheelchair system to not use torque sensors. Via an observer and a mechanical model of the wheelchair, human pushing frequencies and direction are reconstructed from the available velocity measurements provided by incremental encoders. Based on the reconstructed pushing frequencies and direction, we estimate the human intention and a robust observer-based assistive control is designed. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to show the performance of the proposed model-based assistive algorithm. The objective of this first design is to illustrate that the need of expensive torque sensors can be removed for a PAW design.A second design developed in this work is to see the capabilities of learning techniques to adapt to the high heterogeneity of human behaviours. This design results in a proof-of-concept study that aims to adapt heterogeneous human behaviours using a model-free algorithm. The case study is based on trying to provide the assistance according to the user’s state-of-fatigue. To confirm this proof-of-concept, simulation results and experimental result are performed. Finally, we propose perspectives to these two designs and especially propose a framework to combine automatic control and reinforcement learning for the PAW application

Full textThis dissertation analyzes the PMR broadband perspectives, through the evaluation of the preferred candidate, LTE, and the proposal of a possible channel coding evolution, the patented solution of unequal error protection embedded turbo codes. A first study in chapter 2 focuses on the multi-layer analysis and the identification of key issues for professional-like LTE for voice and video communications. The voice and video capacities are estimated for both downlink and uplink LTE transmissions, and the downlink LTE voice system efficiency is compared with that of the PMR and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). This chapter helps highlighting some of the key points. If not resolved, the latter could lead to the LTE downfall as a candidate for the PMR evolution. One such key characteristic of PMR systems is the unequal error protection channel coding technique, which might be adapted to the LTE technology for its evolution to public safety requirements. Chapter 3 further introduces the proposed evolution patented ideas: the unequal error protection embedded turbo codes. We propose a new approach for the unequal error protection channel coding through the progressive hierarchical turbo codes. Both parallel and serial turbo configurations are closely studied. The unequal error protection mechanisms are embedded in the encoder’s structure itself through the progressive and hierarchical insertion of new data. The turbo decoding is modified as to optimally exploit the progressive insertion of information in the encoding process and hierarchically estimate the corresponding data. Both parallel and serial configurations’ properties are analyzed using an analogy with a pilot code behavior, as well as a zoom on the weight error functions coefficients. The virtual code rate and factor graph interpretations also provide a better insight on the code properties. The code possible gains are highlighted through computer simulations in both static and dynamic transmission environments, by using carefully chosen benchmarks. Finally, in chapter 4, the patented idea of parallel progressive hierarchical turbo codes (PPHTC) is evaluated over the LTE platform. A detailed description is given of the voice transmission bearer architecture over LTE, and its consequences are discussed. The new channel code is inserted and evaluated over this platform and its performances compared with the existent LTE transmission schemes. The voice quality results help concluding on the efficiency of the proposed solution in a real transmission scenario. However, even though the newly presented solution gives the best results, further system optimizations should be envisaged for obtaining better gains and exploit the parallel progressive hierarchical turbo codes potential. The dissertation concludes in chapter 5 and a short discussion is given on future research perspectives

Full textBusiness- and mission-critical communications are communications between professional users either from the public safety sector or operating critical infrastructures. Owing to special coverage, priority access, reliability and resilience requirements, as well as additional services for professional users, these communications are conveyed by Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) networks. Driven by the demand growth, significant changes are taking place in the PMR industry. The existing PMR technologies are indeed not well suited to provide high data rates mobile services like video and photo transfers; hence, the adoption of commercial technologies for mission-critical communications is gaining strong momentum. On the other hand, the next generation cellular networks are envisioned to support a large variety of applications and services with heterogeneous performance requirements, i.e., enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB), massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC). Recently, mission-critical communications have been classified in a URLLC use case family, characterized by the need to a higher priority over other communications in the networks. In this context, we focus on enhancing the coverage of wireless networks providing group communications, the main service allowed by PMR networks, taking advantage of the current technologies (e.g. Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service), to meet the mission-critical communications needs. First, we evaluate the performance of unicast and multicast transmission techniques, i.e., the Multicast/Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) and Single-Cell Point-To-Multipoint (SC-PTM), in terms of radio quality, system spectral efficiency and cell coverage, assuming static MBSFN configurations. Then, we introduce an analytical model to derive an approximate closed-form formula of the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) in a MBSFN network.Furthermore, we propose a simple repetition scheme without request, as an alternative to Hybrid Automatic Repeat re-Quest (HARQ), in the aim of improving the network coverage in presence of group communications. By considering the wireless channel characteristics, as well as the service delay constraints, we show that our proposed scheme provides significant gains over traditional repetition schemes. Finally, we assess the trade-off in the cluster’s size of serving cells which arises between network coverage and capacity in multi-point transmissions. We formulate an optimization problem to maintain an acceptable system blocking probability, while maximizing the average SINR of the multicast group users. For group calls, a dynamic cluster of cells is selected based on the minimization of a submodular function that takes into account the traffic in every cell through some weights and the average SINR achieved by the group users. Traffic weights are then optimized using a Nelder-Mead simplex method with the objective of tracking a blocking probability threshold. Results show the importance of dynamic clustering in improving system capacity and coverage

Full textProviding care for a frail older adult who is suffering from dementia has been described as a stressful experience that may erode psychological well-being and physical health of caregivers. The burden and stress is increased when the caregivers are themselves elderly. The present study investigated an 8-week stress-reduction program, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and compared it to a similarly structured, alternative behavioral intervention, Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), to determine if MBSR was as effective or more effective than PMR at reducing subjective burden, symptoms of depression, perceived loneliness or perceived stress among middle-aged and older family caregivers of persons with dementia and other neurocognitive disorders. Twenty-eight participants were randomly assigned to either MBSR or PMR. Self-report and biological measures were collected on five occasions: At the beginning and end of intervention training, and at 8 weeks, 6 months and 1 year following the end of intervention training. In addition to a packet of self-report questionnaires and home-collected salivary cortisol, a laboratory controlled emotional stress test was designed to elicit an emotionally stressful response relevant to caregivers’ experience of caregiving, and facilitate the measurement of stress-related changes in systolic blood pressure and cortisol reactivity. At 1 year post-intervention, the PMR group showed a significantly greater reduction in perceived stress and disruptive patient behaviors. A reduction in emotional reactivity to patient problem behaviors approached significance (p = .08) at 1 year post-intervention for the PMR group. The MBSR group showed significantly greater reductions in self-reported symptoms of depression and perceived isolation from pre- to post-intervention, and those changes remained significant at 8 weeks post-intervention. However, by 1 year post-intervention, interaction effects were non-significant as both groups showed similar decreases in symptoms of depression and perceived isolation. Both groups showed similar decreases in diurnal cortisol, cortisol awakening response, and daily average cortisol (but not laboratory cortisol) from pre- to post-intervention and further decreases at 8 weeks post-intervention, and showed similar reductions in magnitude of change by 1 year post-intervention. This pattern was similar for both groups with systolic blood pressure, showing decreases from pre- to post-intervention, additional decreases at 8 weeks post-intervention, and returning towards baseline by 1 year post-intervention. Both groups also reported similar increases in levels of dispositional mindfulness and self-compassion and similar improvement in overall sleep quality that was sustained at 1 year post-intervention. No changes were seen for perceived burden or loneliness. Significant correlations with amount of daily practice of the instructed stress-reduction approaches were observed for several of the dependent measures from pre- to post-intervention and 8 weeks post-intervention. From pre-intervention to 1 year post-intervention, an overall pattern emerged, where both groups showed similar improvements from pre- to post-intervention, and additional improvements at 8 weeks post-intervention, but displayed a curvilinear reduction in improvements—with some exceptions—and a return towards baseline at 6 months and 1 year post-intervention. In general, reductions in the magnitude of changes observed by 1 year post-intervention remained below baseline levels. Results suggest that both MBSR and relaxation-based interventions may be differentially effective in reducing psychological and physiological indices of chronic stress among older caregivers of relatives with neurocognitive disorders. However, further research, employing wait-list control participants, will be necessary for unambiguous interpretation of the present results.

Full textThis thesis falls within the scope of social and human geography and more exactly of« disability studies ». Understanding the disability like a « social object », the thesis analyzes the societal consideration of disabled people in non-urbanized areas with a high issue of touristic, recreational and patrimonial development. In the first place, it's the recent construction of disability as a social object that is discussed by reminding the history of the societal consideration of the disabled person in our occidental world. The French model and his fundamental rule of global accessibility for ail the domains of the social life are explained and the « Nature and Disability » thematic is more precisely analyzed as a development of an active living ideal for people who are in a disability situation. Secondly, the thesis develops this thematic on the particular field of the Reunion Island and tries to answer to a question which is both simple and complicated: « Today, how we live with a disability on the Reunion Island? ». ln a last time and on the basis of this study of the disability inside a Reunion Island society with accelerated transformations, the thesis specifies the current tendencies with the emergence of new public policies for the welcome of disabled people on natural and touristic areas of the island. To conclude and referring to an original survey, the thesis suggests some tools of evaluation and decision-making aids to these areas

Full textThe thesis focuses on the following issue : "How and with what level of success can management systems based on processes be implemented in SMEs ?" The studied systems are quality models such as ISO 9000 standards or TQM (Total Quality Management). But more targeted systems are also examined such as JIT (Just-in-time) or ABM (Activity based Management). The research is based on an empirical study carried out within two Alsatian SMEs during a four year period, as part of a contract between these companies and the BETA laboratory. First, the apparent incompatibility between management tools and the flexible nature of small organizations leads to analyse the content of the process management tools and to question about their universal characteristic. Then, if the instruments can actually be adapted to SMEs specificities, what do we know about the implementation unfolding ? The decision to launch the implementation project is made by the head of the firms, who follows it through. So, it is important to understand who is the entrepreneur or the manager and how he interacts with his environment. By observing real behaviours, key-factors can be recognized in order to explain the success or the failure of management systems implementation in SMEs, in particular the roles of internal and external "relay runners" of the project

Full textThe exponential growth in the number of communications devices has set out new ambitious targets to meet the ever-increasing demand for user capacity in emerging wireless systems. However, the inherent impairments of communication channels in cellular systems pose constant challenges to meet the envisioned targets. High spectral reuse efficiency was adopted as a solution to higher data rates. Despite its benefits, high spectral reuse leads to increased interference over the network, which degrades performances of mobile users with bad channel quality. To face this added interfence, OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is used for the new 4th generation network. Thanks to its orthogonality OFDM eliminates the intra-cellular interference, but when the same resources are used in two adjacents cells, the inter-cell interference becomes severe. To get rid of the latter, several methods for Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) have been proposed. ICIC allows coordinated radio resources management between multiple cells. The eNodeBs can share resource usage information and interference levels over the X2 interface through LTE-normalized messages. Non-cooperative game theory was largely applied were eNodeBs selfishly selects resource blocks (RBs) in order to minimize interference. In this thesis, we stress on ICIC for the downlink of a cellular OFDMA system in the context of the SOAPS (Spectrum Opportunistic Access in Public Safety) project. This project focuses on the improvement of frequency resource scheduling for Broadband Services provision by PMR (Private Mobile Radio) systems using LTE technologies. We addressed this problem with four different solutions based on Non-cooperative game theory, three algorithms are devoted to RB selection in order to manage the interference, while the last one is a power control scheme with power economy and enhanced system performances

Full textThe historians do know well the popular resistances to the French Revolution in West France; but the attitudes of the southern populations are still ignored, specially in the mountains. Here Revolution stirred up early and violent conflicts, previous to the Vendean insurrection. As soon as 1790, a spiral of violences raise up, and continue until 1815. The present work had to understand its roots, to grasp the forms and modalities of its expression. The judicial series belonging to revolutionary archives have been analysed, and a basis of data realized : the popular movements have been indexed, showing the force of the antagonisms during the Revolution. Diagrams and maps reveal the existence of an authentic demarcation line between revolutionary and refractory countries. This political frontier repeats another one, older : the religious frontier between protestants and catholics. Soon brought over to the Reform, the Cévennes are a protestant bastion the revocation of the Edit de Nantes and the following persecutions could not penetrate. Revolutionary protestants and counter-revolutionary catholics ? The link between politic and religion had to be analysed. In a second stage, the present work focuses on religious history of the southern mountains, in order to weigh the impact of the revolutionary crisis upon sensibilities and political experiences. These mountains had sustained long and recurrent wars of religion : the Revolution appeared to them like a new moment of these fratricide struggles. Their remembrance clearly had an impact upon political behaviours during the Revolution. Religious, judicial and literary sources from the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries have been analysed : this regressive investigation allowed to show the strength of the remembrance populations had kept about the old recurrent conflicts between protestants and catholics : wars of Duke of Rohan (1620-1629) and rebellion of the Camisards (1702-1705) deeply marked minds and sensibilities in southern mountains. The Revolution appeared in these countries as a religious crisis, and awoke ancestral hates : it imposed a confessional reading of the facts, until the last decades of the XIXth century

Full textDuring a long 19th century, many Frenchmen narrated what happened in the American West. Travellers was looking for evidence of the birth of an American nation. Tourists visited the national(ist) parks, industrialized natural spaces. Others wanted to settle : migrants, narrated their failures and successes, missionaries could imitate Jesus Christ and die working for their faith. Fenimore Cooper's novels were read by everybody, but few scientists tried to know the West more seriously. Many failed to imagine the West could have been important to understand the American identity, but on the contrary some believed the nation born in the West. Nevertheless, most of the Frenchmen knew the West by what they could read in popular literature or see in the Wild West Shows. The American nation born in France, as it born in the United States or any other country. And the narrative of the West is in the heart of that process. It's the story of a region which had to become "normal", "American". The others have no right to live in the western memory. A counter-narrative existed, in mass culture or catholic writings, but it couldn't resist at the end of the 19th century. The West had to be "American", but it was created by the North, and not by the South, and only colonial trade bound it to the nation. The American nation born through the western story as a conquering, democratic and mainly nation created by settlers and cow-boys. Nevertheless, at the end of the 19th century, this herois West seems to disappear; the story seems to end. It is impossible to narrate the future West, so the "frontier" appear to narrate its glorious past

Full textAs a "Ground study" of the Catholic Reformation, the present work intents to illustrate the process of cultural and religious transformation within the 469 parishes and chapels belonging to the dioceses of Upper Brittany (Haute-Bretagne), i. E. Rennes, Dol and Saint-Malo, from the middle of 15th to the beginning of the 18th century. The first part covers the parishes of Haute-Bretagne during a long 16th centuy. We first will outline the way parishes are being administered, and then try to understand at what degree the Church constitutes the Parish's centre ; finally we contemplate the clerical framing, the will to undertake reforms and appearing of new problems. The second part is dedicated to the main century of Catholic Reformation, i. E. The 17th century. The implementation of this movement is based both on the episcopal impetus and the reforming within the clergy, but furthermore on the admnistration of the fabriques. The ambition of extending christianisation is characterised by the action of devout elites, the preaching of the clergy, the Missions as well as by the development of worship brotherhoods. Besides, transformations related to the Sacral space, and the worship's magnificence bear witness of the links between liturgy and the pastoral influence. The third part is about the achievements and limits of the reforming action, both as to faiths and practices. We first aim to elucidate the matter of the transformation of the practices and inner conversions, and then illustrate changes and continuities in the field of devotion. Finally, the mutation and resistance of the Ancient World testify of the strategies' reality and success, but also the resistances and remains

Full textHow is it that over a period of three centuries (from the end of the fifteenth to the end of the eighteenth century), the population of Guingamp hardly developed (having between three thousand and four thousand inhabitants), whereas the city enjoyed a sight, economic activities and institutions that were on the whole favorable to its own development? The answer must probably be sought in its demographic structures (relatively late wedding age, high infant and juvenile mortality), as well as in a peculiar social basis (large number of clerics, and especially numerous religious communities, rather few members of the nobility, and a "third estate" made of many low wage earners), which could barely be helpful so far as the expansion of the town was concerned. One may also allow for the lack of spirit of individual enterprise among its inhabitants who - like the main tradesmen from the middle-class - could have afforded (mostly from a financial point of view) to change, or at least to shift, the way things went, but appear not to have been very enterprising people, as they were quite satisfied with their own business. The example of Jacques Le Brun in the seventeenth century is most appropriated. Prosperous as his business was, he would rather invest his wealth, accumulated through wine trading, in buying land or "stone" (buildings) than in commercial activity. So he managed very quickly to become an ally of some famous families belonging to Breton aristocracy, before becoming himself a member of the nobility, as he assumed the title of squire
Le, Pors Sandrine. "Le théâtre des voix dans les écritures dramatiques contemporaines." Paris 3, 2007. http://books.openedition.org.ezproxy.upf.pf/pur/15721.
Full textThe Theatre of Voices will study a corpus of six contemporary plays – those of Vinaver, Lemahieu, Kermann, Kane, Fosse and Schimmelpfennig. This thesis will allow us to draw up the outlines of a theatrical landscape where the framework of the drama is the poetic organization of different voices. The first part of the thesis will deal with dramatic forms that rely on rhythmical compositions, which takes into account an auditory reception. The second part will move the analysis to the point of view of characters. This part will examine how characters withdraw themselves in voices that makes them and untie them at the same time. Most of the studies gathered in this research will rely occasionally on plays by other playwrights such as Novarina or Crimp. In a way our goal will be to reveal a form of the theatre where the priority is given to the ringing vibration of bodies and where the readers and the audience are first moved by their own listening of the text

Full textThis dissertation deals with the migration of 3 000 Irish servants who settled around the Chesapeake Bay, in Virginia and Maryland during the seventeenth century. With their main staple being tobacco, these two colonies heavily relied on indentured servitude, a system adapted from apprenticeship and husbandry. This study, placed in a comparative and Atlantic framework, highlights the interactions between those servants and their owners through demographical and sociocultural analyses. This work shows how crucial the role of indentured servitude was in the peopling and development of the Chesapeake and within the growth of the Atlantic and imperial economy, before giving way to slavery
Pourchasse, Pierrick. "La France et le commerce de l'Europe du nord au XVIIIe siècle." Lorient, 2003. http://books.openedition.org/pur/21511.
Full textMaritime exchanges between the North and Western Europe have played a major role in the whole of European trade since year 1000 until early modern times. France had a great advantage when organising trade to Nordic countries as she had potential shipments to export as well as to import. Although such exchanges were developing, France did not take part in the trade with the North, it’s flag was rarely seen in the Baltic and most of the transactions were carried out by foreign middlemen. During the XVIIIth century, the attitude and lake of ambition of both the traders and the State took over from a real policy aimed at conquering the market. The presence of French ships in the Baltic was very limited until the end of the Ancien Régime. Explanations for the French absence in the North have not changed since the XVIIIth century. This work endeavours ton bring some new answers to the problem

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to identify and investigate the process of accumulation and desaccumulation of th, little land owners'wealth during the first half of the XIX' century (1789-1860) in the department of Seine-et Oise which surrounded Paris. The 1789-1817 period corresponded to a « phase A » of an economic cycle, 1817-1852 period corresponded at a « phase B » of the same cycle. It seems that the conjuncture was ver favourable to the little land owners and more generally to the little farming estates for two reasons. First, th French Revolution had an impact over the system of redistribution and commercialisation of "net agricultur product". Then, it seems on the whole that the little farming estates were sometimes more productive than great farming estates (especially in the north of Paris). Consequently we can possible to wonder if the first agricultural revolution was based upon a capitalistic revolution which condemned the little farming estates in the end ?
