Abstract:
Legal pluralism, as a way of thinking about law, is the seemingly straightforward idea that there is a range of normative orders, which are independent from the state and can be properly described as legal without committing any conceptual mistake. Without giving a full survey of the long and varied history of legal pluralism theory, this article will discuss some central moments in that history. It will focus specifically on the question whether it is possible and useful to capture law as conceptually separate from other normative phenomena so as to speak of specifically legal pluralism or whether it is best to take a panlegalist approach and not draw any clear distinctions between law and other instances of social normativity.

Abstract:
Pluralists maintain that there is more than one truth property in virtue of which bearers are true. Unfortunately, it is not yet clear how they diagnose the liar paradox or what resources they have available to treat it. This chapter considers one recent attempt by Cotnoir (2013b) to treat the Liar. It argues that pluralists should reject the version of pluralism that Cotnoir assumes, discourse pluralism, in favor of a more naturalized approach to truth predication in real languages, which should be a desideratum on any successful pluralist conception. Appealing to determination pluralism instead, which focuses on truth properties, it then proposes an alternative treatment to the Liar that shows liar sentences to be undecidable.

Abstract:
The classical jury theorem assumes that there is one universally correct answer to be tracked. There are however, ways to allow for a subject-dependent standard of correctness. External correctness is then replaced with what is correct from the perspective of the largest group of voters, the ‘democratically-epistemically correct’ outcome. The chapter considers six different schematic setups to demonstrate how the outcome depends on respective group sizes, the competence of voters to vote for their most preferred option, and systematic errors. We also consider a similar effect when voters have different priorities. The democratic-epistemic upshot is largely reassuring, though it is possible that smaller groups can beat larger groups in unfavourable circumstances.

Abstract:
Monism about truth is the view that there is precisely one way of being true. Nihilism about truth is the view that there is no such thing as being true. Pluralism about truth is the view that there are several ways of being true. For the pluralist, truth is Many; in particular, different ways of being true apply to different domains of discourse. The way in which propositions about physics may be true could differ from the way in which the propositions of morality may be true. This chapter provides an introduction to truth pluralism and offers a brief survey of different incarnations of the view. It discusses whether different kinds of pluralist have the resources adequately to address the various challenges and objections, and ends with a brief discussion of what connections, if any, pluralism about truth might bear to other kinds of pluralism.

Abstract:
Dispositional Pluralism is the view that dispositional properties are abundant and diverse. When something has a disposition, it is such that, if it were in a certain kind of circumstance, a certain kind of effect would occur. Dispositions include such varied properties as character traits like a hero’s courage, characteristics of physical objects like a wine glass’s fragility, and characteristics of microphysical entities like an electron’s charge. Some dispositions are natural while others are non-natural. Some dispositions called “powers” are ungrounded while non-fundamental dispositions are grounded in other properties. Some dispositions manifest constantly, some of them manifest spontaneously, while others manifest only when they are triggered to do so. Some dispositions manifest by causing another dispositional property to be instantiated, while others have manifestations that involve non-dispositional properties and relations. Some dispositions are intrinsic to their bearers while others are extrinsic. Some of them are causally relevant to their manifestations while others are not. Some dispositions manifest in some particular way in particular circumstances, while other dispositions manifest in various ways in various circumstances. What makes all of these diverse properties dispositions is their connection to a certain kind of counterfactual fact. Nevertheless, disposition ascriptions are not semantically reducible to counterfactual claims.
