Full textThis degree project of 22.5 hp is part of the Mechatronics Engineering education at Karlstad University. The client is Valmet AB (formerly Metso AB) in Hagfors, which manufactures and sells grinding segments for the paper and pulp industry. The project highlights one of the three formwork machines at the company, called M01. The formwork is the basis to the molding results of the products and in the current situation it is of great variability in quality outcomes, partly caused by too many degrees of freedom in how the machine operated. The goal is to come up with an automated solution for ejection of shell halves, maintain a more stable level of sand in the sandbag through level measurements and reduce spillage during filling of sand.A pressure sensor and an ultrasonic sensor have been used to measure the state of the machine and to control an external PLC, Siemens LOGO addition to the ordinary PLC has used. The result was a prototype that together with a number of new sensors can make test measurements and temporarily control the machine to get a hint about if it could be a good solution in the future. The solution could later be fully developed with better sensors and its features implemented into the regular PLC to be used in any formmachine. All the solutions were not fully desirable but they are still a step in the right direction. The shells doesn’t let go easier but an automated ejection program has been developed and that be used as a supplement and assist the operator. The new solution has also led to reduced waste, and that the time for sand filling is now controlled through level measurements. However, it must be started manually in each production cycle.

Full textHigher expectations on sustainability, safety and ergonomics, sets higher demands on an increasing number of areas, including PLC- and HMI-programming. The purpose of this work has been to modify an analog input block with associated faceplate and faceplate icon from Siemens Open Library. A comparsion has been made between the different types of programming, according to such aspects as; safety, sustainability, cycle-time, visual aspects and ergonomics. The programmings have also been compared to two different standards; SSG 5262 and ISO 13849-1. The aim with this thesis work has been to examine how an increased functionality can affect other aspects, such as ergonomics, cycle-time, safety and sustainability. PLC:s, a type of programmable computer, can only read bit patterns and for to be able to read analog signals, the PLC needs an AD-converter. PLC:s from Siemens convert the signal to a resolution of 16 bit and also provides error code when the input signal is too high or too low. With communication between humans and machines, some form of interface is needed and the open source library ”Open Library” from Siemens, provides such interfaces in the form of faceplates. In the library, there are functions that are already programmed, motor control beeing one of them. The program code was written in the FBD language and the standard IEC 61131-3 describes the structure of this and other languages used for PLC programming. After a litterature study on the subject, an implementation of new functions was made, according to requests from the company ÅF-consult. The new functions that were programmed were; a hysteresis function for alarm boundaries, filter function with damping, graphic representation of the filtered signal, display of trend curves, sensor type and help window in the faceplate. A logging function was also programmed, with a button that saved input values in a datablock. The cycle-time was measured to somewhat longer than one millisecond for an average cycle-time for each PLC-block. The longest cycle-time for the original block was 72.892 milliseconds and the longest for the modification was 158.174 milliseconds. The faceplate was made about 90 percent larger, to accomodate the new functions. The colors and the text sizes, were edited to better match the guidelines written in SSG 5262. The original faceplate has smaller text sizes and different colors on process values, than advocated by SSG 5262. Neither of the programmings is completely according to ISO 13849-1, even if they contain safety-related functions. With regards to visual- and ergonomical aspects, both the original and the modified faceplate could be said to be ”pleasant for the eyes”, with few colors. From an ergonomic view the modification can be viewed as somewhat better because of larger text sizes and standardized process value colors. From a sustainability- and ethical perspective, it is difficult to determine which programming is best, because more functions can give longer cycle-times and thereby eventually higher energy consumption, but can give value in the form of time-savings and possibly money-savings.

Full textThis paper treats two competing suppliers of automation technology, Siemens and Rockwell Automation and directly compares them for a given set of factors in the following categories: performance, communication and software tools. The study consists of performance tests made on different PLC’s from these suppliers, considerations in the differences of communication technology and analysis of the programming tools according to chosen criteria’s but also by the degree of compliance with internationally established standards. The tests have shown the PLC from Rockwell Automation as having better performance for the chosen criteria (PLC’s for small to medium sized machines). Siemens offers more performance and more stable industrial ethernet communication over ProfiNET than does Rockwell Automation with EtherNet/IP. Accordingly, Siemens offers more flexibility in meeting future industrial needs. The software tools provided by Siemens offer a more object-oriented approach for programming PLC’s than equivalent tools from Rockwell Automation. TIA Portal offered by Siemens is more than twice as compliant with the internationally accepted standard IEC 61131-3 as Studio 5000 from Rockwell and in being more compliant benefits from increased interoperability and effective programming. The results show that Siemens’ products and services for automation benefits the customer in long term viability.

Full textThe heat and power station Allöverket in Kristianstad produced the process water in a plant called the total desalination. In this plant which consists out of two identical lines, they let the incoming water passing through ion exchangers to replace the undesired ions in the water to more desired ions. The reason for doing this is that the undesired ions in the water give coatings on the turbine. When the ion exchangers have been saturated, they must be restored to the original condition. This is done by starting a regeneration program, which consists of a number of steps such as back flushing, intake of chemicals and four different flushes. There are limits on the conductivity and the content of silicon in the water that will be delivered. But there is only measurement of the conductivity connected to the control system, and because of this they control the plant with different timers. To the control system there is connected a number of centrifugal pumps, solenoid valves and instrumentation for measurement of conductivity. In the total desalination sits a Siemens S5 control system that controls the plant after amount of water, conductivity and different times of the sequences. The control functions are now located on a control cabinet out of the factory. The Siemens S5 control system is old and outdated and will be changed to an ABB 800xA control system. This control system they already use to control other parts of the factory from the control room. With this study I have developed a new functional description of the plant and it consists of function diagrams which describes how the software controls the plant today. To the function description, I have also made a new technical description and revised the process scheme so that all documentation of the plant says the same thing.

Full textAt Siemens, plcs are used to control the gas turbines, and to execute the code in the plcs cyclic interrupts are used. If the execution time for the interrupt becomes close to the cyclic time of the interrupt the load of the plc increases. High load levels can lead to situations were segments of code are not executed on time or even not executed at all. In this thesis an analysis of the regulators used to govern a gas turbine has been performed. The purpose of the analysis is to study the performance of the regulators for different cycle times with the aim to be able to reduce the load by sampling more slowly.
To determine the load contribution from each regulator a review of the regulators and their execution times has been made. For the analysis the Matlab program Simulink has been used to make models of the regulators, which have then been sampled at different rates. With this information it is possible to determine for which cycle times each regulator has accepetable performance and how much load each regulator contributes with. A save of load of approximately 2 percent can be obtained without loosing too much performance.

Full textBillerudKorsnäs in Gävle is a paper mill that manufactures liquid-packaging board as well as white top liner (WTL). A week-long manufacturing stop is carried out each autumn so that repairs, maintenances, and installations can be accomplished. One of the projects that are going to be commissioned this autumn is about upgrading the control system of the core cutter associated with board machine 4. It is necessary that every component is prepared optimally so that the installation and commissioning runs effectively. This report describes the preparatory work that has been done to the control system, an operator panel, and a servo drive. The objective was to prepare every component in the best possible way so that the results of the upgrade would be significant improvements of the core cutter. The operator panel was considered important in the development and a lot of work was therefore put into creating a user-friendly interface. However, the method that was used to develop the interface could have been improved to make it more time efficient. A small case study was conducted to grasp an understanding of the core cutter functions. Interviews were done with the operators to understand better their ideas about enhancing certain features. The user interface and its design were also discussed during the interviews, resulting in a layout that the operators were pleased with. The control system program was based on the old control program in which new functions were added into, e.g., the servo drive and a calibration function. Various devices and their programs were also tested throughout the whole project using a test rig. The test rig contained a control system, an operator panel, and a servo drive with a motor. The result was successful. It was possible to control the servo drive with the operator panel. Hopefully the upgrade leads to a major improvement of the core cutter control. The flexibility of the new operator panel created new possibilities to streamline the functions better than before and thus simplifies further development.
