Full textSupervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are widely used in automated manufacturing and in all areas of our nation's infrastructure. Applications range from chemical processes and water treatment facilities to oil and gas production and electric power generation and distribution. Current research on SCADA system security focuses on the primary SCADA components and targets network centric attacks. Security risks via attacks against the peripheral devices such as the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have not been sufficiently addressed. Our research results address the need to develop PLC applications that are correct, safe and secure. This research provides an analysis of software safety and security threats. We develop countermeasures that are compatible with the existing PLC technologies. We study both intentional and unintentional software errors and propose methods to prevent them. The main contributions of this dissertation are: 1). Develop a taxonomy of software errors and attacks in ladder logic 2). Model ladder logic vulnerabilities 3). Develop security design patterns to avoid software vulnerabilities and incorrect practices 4). Implement a proof of concept static analysis tool which detects the vulnerabilities in the PLC code and recommend corresponding design patterns.

Full textEven though you probably first of all would think about industries when you hear about a monitoring system its something that is increasing in building automation today. As today's buildings become more intelligent, the need to gain full control of all parts of the system increases. By implementing a superiorvisory system, also known as a SCADA system, a property can be monitored from one location, giving the user a full overview of what's happening in the building. The aim of this work is to describe the communication between a supervisory and underlying system and to put togheter a small SCADA system. First of all is a description of how a superior system works and is followed up with an investigation about the chosen communication standard. A standard that underlies how a functional SCADA then can be implemented. Keep in mind of today's use of the Internet, it is at instance a question of how safe a similar system can be implemented in a house without being worried about third parties hacking your system. The conclusion is that this sort of system have a big potential when almost everyone has a computer and Internet at home. If you can neglect the security risks and how much the cost may be to buy a similar system is that this is the future in our houses.

Full textMost of the industrial plants has a control center where is installed a SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) application. At the moment, it exists a great offer of acquisition, supervision and control of software and the evolution of this software follows a triple tendency: intercommunication between applications, standardization of the communications with the field devices and adoption of the communication surroundings. The report is divided in two parts: In the first the reader can learn the basic ideas of SCADA system and find the most important SCADA software available today. InTouch 7.1 and WinCC have been studied in more depth because they are the most successful software. In the second part is described the visualization of a real life process, it is the visualization of a toy car factory allocated in Linköping?s University and how interconnected the visualization process with the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). In the report also are described the basic components needed to realize the visualization of any process involving PLCs.

Full textAt the municipality-owned energy company Sala Heby Energi AB work is underway to convert the control of a heating-pan from relay control and analog monitoring to digital control with PLC. Within the framework of this degree project, three specific parts of this conversion are studied: a theoretical study aimed at mapping the pros and cons of the conversion, an examination of the possibility of improving individual control functions in conjunction with the conversion and the establishment of a schematic diagram or overview of the heat boiler that will serve as a basis for its implementation in the SCADA-system of the combined power and heating plant. An advantage of relay control is that it can be cost-effective to handle individual simple control tasks. However, overall and in particular for controlling major more complex processes the benefits of digital control is large. This in terms of cost-effectiveness for larger systems, possibilities for more efficient alarm management and the ability to log operational data. Two individual functions are studied: control of the heating pans damper in relation to the steam pressure and fuel management control. To adjust the height of the damper, two control options are compared using Simulink simulations. Conventional PID control is com-pared to a self-configured fuzzy controller. Much due to a poorly substantiated modelling of the process, the fuzzy regulator's possible benefits to the PID regulator can not be determined. Future studies of the fuzzy regulator could potentially change this circumstance. Furthermore, the control of functions for the fuel management are discussed, mainly authorship of drivers who will fill fuel to the fuel storage. In order for them to have access to the fuel management functions when the combined power and heating plant is unmanned, a key switch solution is proposed to activate the control functions. Finally, a new digital overview picture is produced for the system of the heating pan. This contains minor up-dates and adjustments compared to two overview images depicted on the old control cabinets.

Full textThe fourth industrial revolution means that the steel manufacturing industry are faced with great challenges, where less environmental impact combined with high competition sets high expectations for the manufacturing method of steel. To achieve improvements in manufacturing and raise competitiveness, many manufacturers choose to digitalize their businesses to a greater extent. As a step in the digitalization process, Sandvik SMT Strip has chosen to extend one of their existing control systems with a CMS-module and sensors for vibration measurement. This bachelor thesis intends to present a proof of concept for presenting and storing data collected through vibration measurement in a cold rolling mill at Sandvik SMT Strip. The thesis work will be part of a pilot project at Sandvik SMT Strip. The goal of the pilot project is to achieve a well implemented vibration measurement solution to be able to use more predictive maintenance instead of the proactive and reactive maintenance used today. If an adaptation can be achieved where predictive maintenance is used to a larger extent the prospects are to save resources and time. The method for this thesis work has been experimental work in which the desired results have been governing. The result of this thesis work is a solution proposal for storing and presenting the data of vibration measurement in both time and frequency domain. Some parts of the solution proposal have been started with the goal to achieve a proof of concept. The conclusion presented in this thesis work is that an implementation for storing and presenting collected data with the desired soft- and hardware is possible, but more time is needed to obtain a proof of concept.

Full textMore than 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water, only a small part of which is suitable for either human consumption or agricultural use. Due to pollution from agriculture, households and industry reaching rivers, lakes and seas it is Important for wastewater to be properly treated in order to remove harmful substances before it reaches the environment. Strict environmental and health regulations together with a demand for cost effective ways of wastewater treatment have made control technology in wastewater Treatment Plants an important priority. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is the amount of oxygen in the effluent and it plays a vital role of controlling VV\YTP. Oxygen dissolves in water through mixing water surface with the atmosphere, The dissolved oxygen concentration in the aerobic part of an activated sludge process should be sufficiently high to supply enough oxygen to the microorganisms in the sludge. an excessive high DO leads to high energy consumption and may also deteriorate the sludge quality, A high DO concentration in the internally recirculated water also makes the denitrification less efficient Hence, both for economical and process reasons, it is of interest to control the DO. The used controllers are normally linear controllers, proportional integral (PI) or proportional integral derivative (PID) ones. The work of these controllers leads to bad system performance, because, the process of dissolving oxygen into the wastewater is a nonlinear process and requires nonlinear control. The aim of the research project is to develop methods for design of linear and nonlinear controllers of the concentration of the DO in the aeration tank of the WWTP and to implement the designed controllers in the frameworks of PLC. The nonlinear linearizing controller based on a reference model and Lyapunov second method is designed. Additionally a linear controller is developed in a form of PI controller based on pole placement method to improve, the performance of the closed loop system. The resultant controller is to be on a PLC as a part of Adroit SCADA system. The developed programmes are used to control the wastewater treatment process in laboratory scale plant and can be applied as a part of SCADA software for control of the wastewater treatment plants.

The main objective of this internship, at RiaBlades S.A., was the development of a platform that assists the control and monitoring of the manufacturing site equipment from the maintenance department. The main core of this platform is an HMI console deployed at the maintenance department that was built using iX Developer software empowering: distance alert noti cations, energy consumption values acquisition from the production cast and remote access to onsite equipment, simplifying onsite management of manufacturing production, process and secondary hardware. The developed application is supported mainly by an industrial network based in the Ethernet TCP/IP protocol that allowed the implementation of speci c industrial communication protocols like Modbus TCP and PROFINET IO that were used to establish connection with the existing components. The data acquisition, control and monitoring was only possible with the installation of communication modules and I/O WAGO in scenarios where a secondary system was not fully automated. These modules communicate with a PLC that enabled the automation and communication simplifying the monitoring of the secondary systems from the central system perspective. As a result of this platform's deployment, it is now possible from the maintenance department, to supervise and control in real time the manufacturing site equipment, energy consumption values from the production cast and remotely manage all the alerts from the multiple onsite HMI consoles. This had an enormous contribution to streamline and reduce the response times from the maintenance support team, facilitating task prioritization, anticipating support maintenance activities and reduce equipment idle time that negatively impact the production process.

Full textThe present work involves the study, development and implementation of a semi-automated system using a Programmable Logic controller for the control and monitoring of a Three phase Servodrive (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor drive). Three Phase Servodrives using PMSM are increasingly used for precision control applications in process industries due to their high torque to inertia ratio and operation at higher power factor as compared to Induction Motor. Most of the earlier research on PMSM focused on performance improvement through the use of advance control algorithms such as Vector control, sensorless control, direct torque control, etc. However modern industrial processes which involve multimotor drives require a co-ordinated sequential control through PLC and SCADA system. So far there has been very limited work on the PLC-SCADA control of a PMSM. The present work is an effort to explore this aspect of the PMSM control. An integrated system comprising of a Workstation (PC), the PLC(GE-Fanuc), Permanent Magnet AC Servo Drive, three phase Servomotor(PMSM) and the software for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system are configured and developed in co-ordination with each other to ultimately control the three phase Permanent Magnet synchronous drive in multiple ways. The PMSM is configured and controlled in position and speed control modes. An effort is made to monitor the PMSM runtime variables like speed, torque and current. The necessary communication protocols are established between the various devices to ensure flawless communication. The real time Performance of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor is experimentally verified and captured on the Drive software. Various virtual animated screens are developed to explain the PMSM precise position control applications.

Full textThe year 1987 in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Patras and specifically in Electromechanical Energy Conversion Laboratory Department of Electrical Engineering, in educational and research purposes, installed a complete automated system for producing and providing electrical voltages. This system was able to provide 10 different types of voltages in 15 stations in the area of Laboratory. The system was fully automated, used a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), which was responsible for monitoring, supervision and management system. Also there was a PC directly connected to the system, through which the administrator can monitor, manage and distribute each type of voltage. The system through the walking time showed major operational problems. As a result, the number of the types of voltages and the ability to manage and distribute those provided reduced drastically. Specifically, the part of programmable logic controller (PLC) and the connected computer system effectively and practically has run out of order. The purpose of this work was the solution of problems of the system and ultimately with final result the normal and smooth operation. The solution proposed is the implementation and integration of a modern network automation using modern PLC (the company chosen is OMRON) and the incorporation of a supervisory control and data acquisition application and (SCADA) software of the same company. Analyzed in detail both the production voltages with the respective power circuits and the method of distribution and management of the automation circuits. Contained extensive references to contemporary PLC, in operations and programming, and how it is possible to integrate and operate fully in the existing system. There is an introduction to SCADA to enable each reader without the need for high-level knowledge to understand the utility and operation, and considering how we implement the above automation network using a PLC and SCADA application. We mention a very important area of Electrical Engineering in the modern era: counting the cost of supply, installation and construction of all elements of the project and consider all parallel options for optimal operation and further development and improvement.

Full textThe scope of this thesis is the control and restoration of temperature and humidity from distance in environments which demand precise values of these two measurements. Such an environment can be an Operating Room or an Intensive Care Unit. The valves of the heating or the cooling element are activated according to the desired temperature. When room humidity is below the desired one, the dew three-port valve is activated. On the other hand when humidity is above the desired level the three-port valve of the cooling element is activated for further cooling (dehydration) and at the same time, if needed, it activates the three-port valve of the heating element to maintain the room temperature at the desired level. This is possible with the use of PLC S7 300, when it comes to the functional part, the CP 343-1 Lean unit for the distant communication of the installation through the use of Ethernet, the LabVIEW 9.0 for the implementation of the SCADA(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and the OPC SERVER of the National Instrument for the communication of the PLC S7 300 with LabVIEW 9.0.

Full textThis diploma thesis’ objective was to create a fully automated electrical voltage production and supply system using Programmable Logical Controller (PLC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). This system is located in the Electromechanical Energy Conversion Laboratory of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. The initial design and implementation of the system was in 1987 by ΑSEA BROWN BOVERI (ABB). The basic operational problems combined with little technical support led to the insufficient operation and gradually to the collapse of the system. Some supplies (E1 and E3) operated later on, using typical automation control with button console. So, Professor Dr.-Ing. Athanasios N. Safacas initiated the reoperation of the automated system with the use of new PLCs. For this purpose he assigned seven diploma thesis to the students of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. To complete the project, the system had to be fully analyzed and its components fully registered. The project was finalized after three phases. The system includes 10 different types of electrical voltage in 12 different laboratory locations. During the third phase, that this diploma thesis is part of, the following supplies needed to be implemented : • Ε6 = 0V…230V DC • Ε7 = 0V…230V DC • Ε8 = 0V…500V DC • Ε9 = 149V…450V DC • Ε10 = 150V…500V AC, 15…100Hz These are variable voltage that are produced by electrical machine pairs. The machine are located at the basement of Electromechanical Energy Conversion Laboratory and they are operated by SCADA. The system is operated exclusively by SCADA ,so the operator doesn’t need to have special knowledge of the whole system. The system is secured against any error (hardware or operation) and offers warning messaging and saves error history. Some sections of great interest are: • The E9 supply operates through parallelism of synchronous generator with the energy network. This is achieved auto by the Programmable Logical Controller. • The E10 supply was used to provide a soft starter simulation in order to control the speed of asynchronous machine. In the diploma thesis includes all the information about the power supplies, the connections that were made, the PLC programming and the making of the SCADA system.

Full textThe abusive use of fossil fuels over the past few decades has contributed to the increase in greenhouse gases and the deterioration of the environment. This problem is also evident in the transport sector, making electric mobility, which also includes the electric bicycle, appear in our daily lives. Electric mobility is generally seen as non-polluting and environmentally friendly, however, charging electric vehicles can still contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. For this reason, there is a need to create charging stations with renewable electric energy production. This dissertation aims to design charging stations for E-bikes, with photovoltaic production and electrical energy storage (EES). Through these charging stations it will be possible to charge E-bikes with renewable electric energy sources. This charging station will also cover a SCADA system where it is possible to control and monitor all actions - see the status of the system in real time, record the history of the charges made and monitor various parameters on the quality of the energy. It is also through this system that the charging station will be controlled, through an RFID identification card, needed for the system to grant access.

Full textThe thesis consists in developing a wireless sensors and programmable logical controllers (PLCs) network in Systems and Measurements Laboratory in order to monitor on-line some physical values. The experimental set-up is divided in two parts. The first part is related to the wireless sensors network (WSN) and consists of the sensors, the transceivers and the receiver, which collects data among all sensor nodes. The second part is related to the PLCs' wireless network and consists of the PLCs, the communication processors and the wireless networking modules. In addition, software WinCC-Flexible is used in order to implement a monitoring station of measured values (SCADA system). The thesis' basic goal is to unify the networks, so that data transfer among used devices is achieved, according to the standards of a possible industrial application. Sensors are dispersed in the laboratory and measure a physical value per each. The measured values are: outdoor and indoor temperature, relative humidity, pneumatics' network pressure, height, current and weight. Each sensor is electrically connected to a transceiver, which transmits measured data to the receiver. The transceiver transmits data through the radio frequency module XBEE, which is enclosed into a special cover, suitable for protection in demanding industrial conditions. Each sensor-transceiver pair constitutes a WSN's sensor node. All data is received by the WSN's central node-receiver. On-line monitoring of all measured values is possible through the receiver, by use of TC-Central software, which is also used in order to set WSN's parameters, such as sensor nodes' addresses and data sample rate. Moreover, the receiver contains four analog outputs, which can be used to redirect four received signal in external devices. These analog outputs unify the two wireless networks, by retransmitting four selected measured values to the PLCs' network. The PLCs' network consists of 3 PLCs, networked both wired (PROFIBUS-DP) and wireless (Point-to-Point topology). In the current application only the wireless connection between the PLCs is used, following master / slave media access method, including 1 master station and 2 slave stations. Each PLC includes a communication processor CP 342-5 for wired connection, as well as a communication processor CP 340 and a RF module ARM-IOS RS232/485 for wireless connection. The communication processor connects the PLC's memory and RF module. A PLCs' network slave station is connected to the SCADA system. In the laboratory, a screen has been posted, so that measured values can be visible by everyone inside.

Macedo, Agostinho Macedo.
This dissertation is about the realization of an automation project of a new production line in the ceramics industry and respective integration in the current manufacturing process. Focused on handling operations of ceramic parts in the shop floor, the main objective is to prepare the company to produce a new ceramic product and to increase flexibility and diversity of supply in the market. Triggered off by a strategic need of the company, a solution to provide the firm with the ability to manufacture floor clay blocks, distinct parts of the traditional wall brick which absorbs all the installed production capacity, has been studied and developed. Having a more complicated geometry, a smaller mechanical resistance, besides forcing to a completely distinct material arrangement in the kiln process, it became mandatory to study and introduce new processes, materialized in two distinct production lines, before and after the kiln, with different devices capable of manipulating the material. The solution, financially compatible with the capabilities of the company, aroused from the knowledge of ceramic technology and the presented mechanical solutions, along with the development of automation systems responsible for the operation and integration of the different devices that make up each of the lines. Both systems are controlled by a supervisory application, developed especially for this work and based on the concepts of industry 4.0, providing automatic integration of information generated throughout the manufacturing process and reducing the distance between the fields of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT), traditionally separate. Developed in Windows environment and run on a web server, installed on a company computer connected to the PLC network, the system allows to follow graphically and visualize the evolution of the process in real time, as well as interact with the production lines from a browser installed on any computer with an internet connection. The storage of all critical information associated with the process and the automated production control is performed with the use of an SQL database, integrated and controlled by the supervision application, depending on the needs and the evolution of the process. The work resulted in a significant change in the manufacturing floor clay blocks process and consequently affect the weekly working cycle, with substantial implications in the quality of the product, reflected in the defected rate products whose reduction was greater than 50%, and increase in capacity from 280 tons/week limit, imposed by a set of constraints associated with the old process, to 1000 tons/week.
