Part of this research focused on the predecessors of the FFA by outlining the history and purposes of agricultural organizations formed since the late 1700s. The past two centuries of American agricultural history is rich with efforts to educate and improve agricultural practices through organized groups of farmers and other rural leaders. Early in the development of agricultural societies, experimentation and successful practices were shared with others in the local organization and works were often published in journals or newspapers for educational and informational purposes. Regular meetings and fellowship were also a major focus of the early groups. The national organizations that formed later such as the Grange, included the fraternal, social, and educational aspects while maintaining a focus on the economics of farming.
The boys’ and girls’ club movement provided opportunities for youth to meet, learn, and participate in agricultural competitions. The center of activities for youth organizations quickly shifted from community groups to agricultural education programs in the public schools. Clubs that formed within agricultural education programs in Virginia soon united to create the Future Farmers of Virginia. The FFV and FFA that followed initiated the use of certain symbols, colors, and ritual ceremonies that can be traced directly to the agricultural societies. This research identified many agricultural societies and youth clubs that had a profound influence on the development of the National FFA Organization.
The major purpose of this study was to describe the establishment of the Future Farmers of American and to document the accomplishments of Virginia FFA members at the state and national levels. The objectives of the study were:
To describe the historical events and circumstances that led to the establishment of the Future Farmers of Virginia and the Future Farmers of America,
To document Virginia FFA history by recording achievements of members and chapters at the state level,
To document the achievements of Virginia FFA members and chapters at the national level, and
To provide a history of the Virginia FFA Association from 1925 to the present.
The Virginia FFA Association is rich with historical information that ranges from the formation of the Future Farmers of Virginia in 1925, the forming of a national organization in 1928, and 75 years of accomplishments by Virginia FFA members.<br>Ph. D.

As a society we often attribute our actions to our religious beliefs, or level of religiosity, and assume that those who are more religious often do more to help others in need. However, from a conflict theorist's perspective, these beliefs regarding religiosity could be viewed as a way to maintain control and promote solidarity among the masses, as exemplified by the comment of George H.W. Bush. This study, using the special topic module on volunteering and donating from the 1996 General Social Survey, examines this question to determine whether religion and volunteering and donating are related and whether the relationship is consistent when control variables are considered. Factorial analyses were completed using data from 2,904 respondents (N=2,904) to create a multidimensional scale measuring level of religiosity and scales measuring different aspects of volunteering and donating. Crosstab and correlation analyses were used to identify relationships between level of religiosity and the various scales measuring volunteering and donating, while regression methods were then utilized to determine the effect that level of religiosity and the identified control variables had on the relationships. The results of this study indicate that while religion is correlated with some aspects of volunteering and donating, it is a significant predictor of volunteering and donating only when those activities are religiously oriented. These results not only suggest that the common belief that highly religious people volunteer or donate more than those who are not may be false; they also suggest that comments such as the one by former President Bush are unfounded and create social barriers for a segment of the population based on moral judgments.

<p> The purpose of this quantitative multiple regression study was to examine the relationship between per capita giving and church size, annual stewardship emphasis, stewardship training, offering envelope distribution method, time of receiving offering, frequency of distributing contribution statements, membership orientation, and electronic options of giving among churches affiliated with the Baptist Missionary Association (BMA) of America. Through a simple random sample, 600 BMA of America churches were chosen to participate in the study. Data collection involved a survey instrument validated through an expert panel and pilot study. The data was analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The study found none of the independent variables to be statistically significant predictors of per capita giving, <i> R<sup>2</sup></i> = .06, <i>F</i>(8, 164) = 1.33, <i> p</i> = .234. Through an exploratory measure, the researcher replaced per capita giving with total undesignated receipts. The church size variable was omitted due to high correlation with the criterion variable. The exploratory measure testing the relationship between total undesignated receipts and the seven congregational practices resulted in a valid regression model, <i> R<sup>2</sup></i> = .34, <i>F</i>(7, 163) = 11.71, <i> p</i> < .005. Individual predictors that were statistically significant included stewardship training, offering envelope distribution method, and frequency of distributing contribution statements. Three primary conclusions evolved from the study. First, per capita giving is not a good standard of measurement when comparing across churches. Second, there is a relationship between congregational stewardship practices and increased income. Third, unidentified factors beyond stewardship practices serve as a major impetus to giving among members of BMA of America churches. </p><p> <i>Keywords:</i> Baptist, determinants, giving, leadership, stewardship.</p>

In June 2012 the European Union signed bilateral Association Agreements (AAs) based on a neoliberal economic growth philosophy with Central American states as well as! with Colombia and! Peru. In addition to free trade, these also include a ppolitical dialogue as well as an international cooperation pillar. This thesis explores empirical disconnects and contradiction in the EU’s efforts to combine these different aspects in it foreign policy. In particular, it investigates how successful the EU is in linking these AAs to it work towards sustainable development and gender equality at multiple levels. It does this by moving from a wide and international perspective to a local and more specific one. In doing this the thesis examines international trends, while concentrating on EU development policies in relation to trade with Latin America, using Guatemala as a case study. Most critiques against the AAs take place within a modernity framework but this research moves beyond these notions and considers how we may account for ‘the local’ and critically engage with Western mainstream development discourses. This thesis argues that there, in addition to the empirical disconnects in EU policy, is a disconnect within theory between gendered international political economy (GIPE) and theories on sustainability. Therefore the theoretical framework aim at bridging this gap by linking environmental feminist thought with feminist economics. In addition, this thesis includes Mayan cosmovision (worldview) and the concept of buen vivir (good life), which is inspired by indigenous people’s worldviews and is present in the Bolivian as well as the Ecuadorian constitutions. This way local forms of theoretical knowledge is taken into account and combined with complementing forms of feminisms, allowing for a critical analysis of trade, gender and sustainable development in Latin America.

An association between body mass index (BMI) and caesarean section has been documented in the literature in developed countries. The causal factors leading to this association are not known, therefore it is unknown whether this association could be extended to developing countries. This study will examine BMI as a risk factor for caesarean section in women in a developing country.<br>This study included a cohort of 290,124 births in Uruguay, from the years 1992 to 2001, and a cohort from Pelotas, Brazil with 8,475 births, from 1982 and 1993. Three statistical methods were used to deal with missing data in the logistic regression analysis: casewise deletion, use of a missing data indicator, and multiple imputation.<br>BMI showed a strong relationship to caesarean section, with increasing risk of caesarean with increasing BMI, except in women with previous caesarean section in Pelotas. Other important risk factors included level of education, diabetes, hypertensive diseases and primiparity. Risks differed by labour type and history of caesarean section.

Since the development of widespread sound recording and distribution, the music industry has become increasingly consolidated among fewer companies. Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno described how the commodifying forces of the music industry lead to a predictable formulaic music that lacks any critical approach to society in their groundbreaking book, first published in 1944, Dialectic of Enlightenment (1972). Today, the patterns have not changed as there are now four major record labels known as the â Big Fourâ that produce commodified music with a business model that optimizes their profits at the expense of art, creativity and original style. Using the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as its lobbying group and appointed vigilantly, the â Big Fourâ attempt to limit the access of independent artists and labels to music consumers.
<p>
This thesis argues that in the process through which the music industry works to co-opt and commodify genres of music, the music is (de)politicized to appeal to a larger audience. While technological advances in digital media and the internet would seem to bring a decentralized (even democratized) structure that diverts the costly music distribution system allowing for more artists and labels to compete, the RIAA has acted to prevent these technologies from developing their greatest potential. First, I demonstrate how music is commodified and marketed towards consumers. The second part of this thesis uses hip hop as an example to demonstrate how the music industry co-opts a genre of music to sell to the largest number of consumers and in the process changes the political significance of that genre. Finally, I argue that the RIAAâ s attack on file-sharers in the name of copyright protection is a technique for the â Big Fourâ to stop competition from independent artists and labels.<br>Master of Arts

Adolescent substance use research has yet to consider victimization as a potential risk factor contributing to alcohol and marijuana use among American Indian youth living on or near reservations, despite the presence of traumatic experiences, childhood adverse events, racism, and discrimination. Contribution to this lack of attention may be due to little being known about American Indian youth victimization. Even less is known about its association with alcohol and marijuana use in general and for those youth living on or near reservations in particular.
This study utilizes mixed methods with a nationally representative sample of American Indian youth living on or near reservations in the first phase. A qualitative study in the second phase followed up with a group of practitioners serving American Indian youth living on or near a reservation to explore the association between victimization and alcohol and marijuana use. Understanding the perceptions of practitioners presents an opportunity for collaborative knowledge creation on the conceptualization of victimization and its relationship to alcohol and marijuana use.
A secondary data analysis utilizing ordinary least squares regression yielded several significant contributions to alcohol and marijuana user levels when the models were run with the sample intact and when run by gender and compared side-by-side. Extending these findings to a qualitative follow-up produced themes that illustrated practitioner conceptualizations of victimization and perceptions about the influence of these experiences on alcohol and marijuana use among the American Indian youth they serve. Study findings inform or enhance substance use treatment design, delivery, and policy, and to advocate for tribal sovereignty and self-determination.

Objective: To evaluate associations between anxiety and severe impairment of quality of life (QoL) in Latin American postmenopausal women.
Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a multicenter cross-sectional study among postmenopausal women aged 40 to 59 from 11 Latin American countries. We evaluated anxiety (The Goldberg Depression and Anxiety Scale), and QoL (Menopause Rating Scale [MRS]), and included sociodemographic, clinical, lifestyle, and anthropometric variables in the analysis. Poisson family generalized linear models with robust standard errors were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% CIs. There were two adjusted models: a statistical model that included variables associated with the outcomes in bivariate analyses, and an epidemiologic model that included potentially confounding variables from literature review.
Results: Data from 3,503 women were included; 61.9% had anxiety (Goldberg). Severe QoL impairment (total MRS score >=17) was present in 13.7% of women, as well as severe symptoms (MRS subscales): urogenital (25.5%), psychological (18.5%), and somatic (4.5%). Anxiety was independently associated with severe QoL impairment and severe symptoms in the epidemiological (MRS total score: PR 3.6, 95% CI, 2.6-5.0; somatic: 5.1, 95% CI, 2.6-10.1; psychological: 2.8, 95% CI, 2.2-3.6; and urogenital: 1.4, 95% CI, 1.2-1.6) and the statistical model (MRS total score: PR 3.5, 95% CI, 2.6-4.9; somatic: 5.0, 95% CI, 2.5-9.9; psychological: 2.9, 95% CI, 2.2-3.7; and urogenital: 1.4; 95% CI, 1.2-1.6).
Conclusions: In this postmenopausal Latin American sample, anxiety was independently associated with severe QoL impairment. Hence, screening for anxiety in this population is important.

Guatemala's Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo (GAM) and the Asociacion de Mujeres Nicaraguenses Luisa Amanda Espinoza (AMNLAE) in Nicaragua exemplify the resurgence of social movements arising from the turmoil in Central America. They are female collective agents pursuing the self-defined interests of their membership. Via humanitarian activism, the GAM struggles to locate the desaparecidos, while AMNLAE exercises institutional activism as a means to incorporate women and promote gender-specific interests. Women in both groups became active to protect "practical gender interests" and, as a result, women's level of consciousness is growing but the acquisition of a gender awareness does not necessarily follow political conscientization. The growing level of political participation and consciousness provides the women with training to become active and efficacious participants in the dynamics of their country.

The goal of the thesis "The EU-MERCOSUR: specific position of Argentina?" is the analysis of relations between the EU and MERCOSUR. The first part of the thesis deals with the characteristics of the selected territory. The second part of the thesis elaborates the relations between the EU and MERCOSUR. It includes historical development of cooperation, law basis of relations and business exchange. The crucial part of this chapter focuses on development of negotiation of inter-regional association agreement and its benefits for both parties. The thesis elaborates current progress of the negotiation especially in the context of the upcoming May 2010 EU and Latin America summit, where the association agreement could be signed. The agreement, however, will probably not include all the originally planned areas. The third part of the thesis analyzes the role of Argentina in MERCOSUR and relations of the EU and Argentina. The first hypothesis, claiming that Argentina is more oriented towards inter-regional MERCOSUR trade than the other member states, was not proved. The second hypothesis, claiming that signing the association agreement with EU will be very important for Argentina due to its strong ties to the European continent, was proved. The question, what the benefits for Argentina would be, if the Association Agreements would be signed without the chapter concerning the liberalization of the Agricultural products trade, still remains.

Historically there have been various discussions on how to achieve development from different scopes and spaces. The vision of development from a global space has undergone a significant evolution to the present day, in particular after World War II, in the context of international development cooperation. Within a regional space, economic cooperation mechanisms have shown to be dynamic and positive for development. This paper aims, firstly, to set forth a review of the evolution of the development vision from a global and regional perspective. Secondly, to analyze contributions in commerce from a regional development perspective through a comparative analysis of the Pacific Alliance and the Latin American Integration Association between 2005 and 2014, as economic cooperation mechanisms in Latin America and the Caribbean that seek development within the same region. / Históricamente han existido distintos debates para alcanzar el desarrollo, desde diferentes ámbitos y espacios. La visión del desarrollo desde el espacio global, ha tenido una importante evolución hasta nuestros días, principalmente después de la II Guerra Mundial, a través de la Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (CID). Desde el espacio regional, los mecanismos de cooperación económica han reflejado ser dinámicos y positivos para el desarrollo. Por ello, el presente trabajo pretende en primera instancia, realizar una revisión de la evolución sobre la visión de desarrollo desde un contexto global y regional. En una segunda fase, busca analizar las aportaciones comerciales, desde una visión del desarrollo regional, por medio de un análisis comparativo de la Alianza del Pacífico (AP) con respecto a la región y a la Asociación Latinoamericana de Integración (ALADI) para el periodo 2005-2014, como mecanismos de cooperación económica en América Latina y el Caribe (ALyC) que buscan un desarrollo dentro de la misma región.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, white middle and upper class women active in reform became involved in the movement for American Indian reform. Focusing on the so-called "Indian problem," groups such as the Women's National Indian Association (WNIA) were formed to address the injustices against, and sufferings of, American Indian people at the hands of the U.S. military due to the increasing pressures and demands of western migration. This study addresses the role white women played in the movement for Indian reform through their involvement either as part of the WNIA membership or as missionaries, teachers or field matrons. The thesis is concerned, above all, with the ways in which their involvement reflects larger historical trends that enveloped white middle class women during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The work of reform groups like the WNIA helped transform missionary and field positions into jobs which were identified as specially suited for women. While missionary work was, before the 1870s, part of the male or public sphere, through the feminization of American religion, Victorian tenets of domesticity and moral superiority, and changing economic and commercial opportunities, the way was opened for women to serve as missionaries without the "protection" of a husband. The WNIA provides an impressive example of the scope and influence of women's reform organizations during the Progressive era. However, the goals and beliefs of WNIA leadership provide a contrast to the goals and beliefs of women working in the field. This contrast illuminates women's intentions in their quest for Indian assimilation and their role in that pursuit. The thesis is based upon the individual experience of women who worked as missionaries, teachers and field matrons. Four case studies explored in chapter III provide a window into the redefinition of "true womanhood" that took place at the turn-of-the century through the ways in which the subjects of this thesis arrive at a new self consciousness about their role in Indian reform.

Genome-wide approaches including polygenic risk scores (PRSs) are now widely used in medical research; however, few studies have been conducted in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), especially in South America. This study was designed to test the transferability of psychiatric PRSs to individuals with different ancestral and cultural backgrounds and to provide genome-wide association study (GWAS) results for psychiatric outcomes in this sample. The PrOMIS cohort (N = 3308) was recruited from prenatal care clinics at the Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal (INMP) in Lima, Peru. Three major psychiatric outcomes (depression, PTSD, and suicidal ideation and/or self-harm) were scored by interviewers using valid Spanish questionnaires. Illumina Multi-Ethnic Global chip was used for genotyping. Standard procedures for PRSs and GWAS were used along with extra steps to rule out confounding due to ancestry. Depression PRSs significantly predicted depression, PTSD, and suicidal ideation/self-harm and explained up to 0.6% of phenotypic variation (minimum p = 3.9 × 10−6). The associations were robust to sensitivity analyses using more homogeneous subgroups of participants and alternative choices of principal components. Successful polygenic prediction of three psychiatric phenotypes in this Peruvian cohort suggests that genetic influences on depression, PTSD, and suicidal ideation/self-harm are at least partially shared across global populations. These PRS and GWAS results from this large Peruvian cohort advance genetic research (and the potential for improved treatments) for diverse global populations.<br>National Institutes of Health<br>Revisión por pares

<p> This dissertation analyzes the development of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), a Muslim-American religious association, from the Iranian Revolution to the inauguration of our nation's first African-American president. This case study of ISNA, the largest Muslim-American organization in North America, examines the organization's institution-building and governance as a way to illustrate Muslim-American civic and religious participation. Using nonprofit research and theory related to issues of diversity, legitimacy, power, and nonprofit governance and management, I challenge misconceptions about ISNA and dispel a number of myths about Muslim Americans and their institutions. In addition, I investigate the experiences of Muslim-Americans as they attempted to translate faith into practice within the framework of the American religious and civic experience. I arrive at three main conclusions. First, because of their incredible diversity, Muslim-Americans are largely cultural pluralists. They draw from each other and our national culture to develop their religious identity and values. Second, a nonprofit association that embraces the values of a liberal democracy by establishing itself as an open organization will include members that may damage the organization's reputation. I argue that ISNA's values should be assessed in light of its programs and actions rather than the views of a small portion of its membership. Reviewing the organization's actions and programs helps us discover a religious association that is centered on American civic and religious values. Third, ISNA's leaders were unable to balance their desire for an open, consensus-based organization with a strong nonprofit management power structure. Effective nonprofit associations need their boards, volunteers and staff to have well-defined roles and authority. ISNA's leaders failed to adopt such a management and governance structure because of their suspicion of an empowered chief executive officer.</p>

The present study was a longitudinal analysis of the information needs of Red Angus cattle breeders and their use of networked information services. It was based on two surveys. The first, conducted in 1995--96, polled all 1067 ranches of the Red Angus Association of America. Responses from 192 Red Angus breeders were used to determine the value of different information types and to evaluate perceptions of the greatest barriers to the adoption of network information services. The second survey, mailed to 41 Red Angus breeders in 1998, focused on early adopters and likely users of network services. Responses from 15 breeders were used to evaluate perceptions of the greatest barriers to the effective use of Web-based information services.

Aim: The aim of this study was to broaden the understanding of the role of communitygroups in the prevention of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Bolivia. Therefore, this work assessed the connection between community group membership and the justification ofphysical IPV among women in Bolivia. IPV justification was chosen as an outcome, as it is strongly correlated to IPV experience. Methods: Data from a quantitative survey by the World Values Survey involving 988 womenin Bolivia was used for the analysis. To assess possible confounders, bivariate analysis was conducted. Logistic regression analysis between women’s community group membership andtheir justification of physical IPV has been performed. Results: The results indicate that 19.6% of women in Bolivia partly or always justify IPV.There has not been a significant association between community group membership and IPVjustification. The factors that were significantly associated to IPV justification in the final model were age and educational level of the women. Women aged 50 + had lower odds ofjustifying physical IPV than women aged 18-29 (OR 0.59, 95% CI: 0.35-0.97, p= <0.05). Similarly, women in the highest educational group had lower odds of justifying IPVcompared to women in the lowest educational group (OR 0.63, 95% CI: 0.41-0.98, p= <0.05). Conclusion: The association between community group membership and IPV justification inthis study was insignificant. This could be due to limitations in the study design. Futureresearch in the area should conduct studies with focus on different types of community groups singularly.

The participants in this pilot study (n=22) were administered an online music file sharing survey, a Defining Issues Test (DIT), and participated in a small focus group. This thesis also outlined the history and progression of online music piracy in the United States, and addressed four research questions which aimed to determine why individuals choose to engage in the file sharing of copyrighted music online.

El primero, un estudio donde la diversidad genética, las relaciones interpoblacionales y la estructura poblacional de los materiales nativos permitieron ligar aspectos históricos, antropológicos y arqueológicos del maíz para crear una historia consolidada de la migración del maíz desde su centro de origen en Mesoamérica hacia el Caribe y Sudamérica. El segundo, es explorado el potencial de las razas de maíz para proporcionar nuevos alelos favorables para mejoramiento. La evaluación fenotípica y genotípica conjunta de accesiones del Banco de Germoplasma con material mejorado por CIMMYT permitió identificar fuentes de variación alélica importante para algunos caracteres de interés como tolerancia a la sequía. La caracterización de la diversidad genética de los materiales nativos para la conservación y explotación con fines de mejoramiento es un enfoque muy prometedor en particular con el desarrollo constante de nuevas herramientas genéticas.<br>In this thesis work, the genetic diversity of Latin American maize landraces was evaluated extensively combining phenotypic and genotypic data, for two different purposes. First, to study the genetic diversity, relationships, and population structure of native materials allowing the linkage of historical, anthropological and archaeological data to create a consolidated history of maize migration from its origin center in Mesoamerica towards The Caribbean and South America. Second, to explore the potential of maize landraces to provide new elite alleles for breeding, the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of gene bank accessions compared to improved material from CIMMYT allowed the identification of important sources of allelic variation for traits of interest including drought tolerance. The characterization of native genetic diversity for conservation and exploitation towards breeding is a very promising approach, especially considering on going development of new genetic tools and methodologies

La thèse analyse un document intitulé Record Labeling Hearing (RLH) (1985), qui reprend dans son intégralité une séance qui s’est tenue au Congrès des États-Unis à propos du contenu jugé problématique de certains albums de musique. Au cœur de cette séance, se retrouve le Parents Music Resource Centre (PMRC), un groupe de pression qui voit le jour en 1984. D’après le PMRC, les albums avec des paroles traitant de sexe, de violence, d’occulte, de drogues et d’alcool méritent l’autocollant du « Parental Advisory : Explicit Lyrics » afin d’avertir les parents des thématiques abordées. La séance réunit des sénateurs du Congrès américain, les membres du PMRC et des alliés de ces derniers, dont la National Parent/Teacher Association (NPTA), ainsi que des représentants de l’industrie de la musique et trois artistes. Nous verrons dans la thèse qu’en fait, c’est le heavy metal que le PMRC et ses alliés visaient lors du RLH et non par exemple certains contenus transversaux à divers types d’albums de musique. A cette époque, la sous-culture du heavy metal était encore en émergence et pour tout dire bien fragile. En 1985, elle était même menacée de fragmentation en raison de la popularité de certains de ses sous-genres. Or, en présentant le heavy metal comme une contre-culture, le RLH a aidé ce genre musical à se constituer en véritable sous-culture.

A partir de recherches effectuées et présentées s’est développée une réflexion sur les coûts du cancer en phase palliative et comment au-delà des mesures coercitives, il pourrait être possible, par différentes moyens cliniques, d’enseignements et de recherches, de limiter ces coûts.Méthode : L’existence en France de détresse financière a été identifiée ainsi que son impact sur la qualité de vie des patients atteints de cancer en phase avancé. Dans l’objectif d’améliorer la qualité de vie des patients, il est important de savoir d’où provient cette détresse financière et les différents coûts induits par le cancer. D’autres études ont été réalisées dont notamment une sur la fin de vie et sur les critères d’agressivité des soins qui peuvent être une source de dépenses ainsi que d’altération de la qualité de vie.Discussion : La collaboration, l’anticipation, la qualité de la formation et le développement de la recherche en soins palliatifs sont autant d’éléments pertinents pouvant impacter les coûts du cancer en phase palliative. Dans la littérature, ces différents coûts ne sont jamais étudiés en même temps. Tout ce travail conduit à la construction d’un protocole de recherche sur les coûts de la phase palliative chez les patients atteints de cancer.Conclusion : L’avenir est non seulement de mieux comprendre les dépenses imputables au cancer pour le patient et sa famille mais aussi d’avoir une réflexion plus globale en discutant de l’amélioration de la consommation des soins et des collaborations qui pourraient avoir un impact non négligeable tout en prodiguant des soins de meilleure qualité et en respectant l’individu ainsi que le collectif. La mort fera toujours partie de la vie quelles que soient les avancées médicales, elle est inéluctable mais la façon de mourir ne l’est pas. La clinique, la recherche et l’enseignement sont les 3 axes qui peuvent permettre son amélioration<br>Concerns about costs of the palliative phase in patients with cancer has emerged. Beyond usual measures to control health expenses other ways involving clinical, teaching and research might impact costs of the palliative phase and health expenses.Methods:Association between financial distress and lower quality of life was highlighted. In order to improve patients’ quality of life, focusing on costs and financial distress seems necessary. Other studies especially one concerning aggressive cancer care near the end of life were made. Those criteria could be one source of health expenses and alteration of quality of life.Discussion: Collaboration, anticipation, quality of professionals training programs and palliative care research development are all possible solutions which could lead to decrease health expenses. In literature no study focusing on all type of cost during the palliative phase was made. All this work leads to a new research protocol concerning palliative phase costs among patients with cancer.Conclusion: Understanding specific cancer expenses for patients and their families is undoubtedly important for quality of life. Concerning a more global approach, health consumptions and quality of collaboration are possible ways to improve quality of life while respecting the individual and the collectivity. Death is inevitable but our way to die is not. Clinics, research and teaching are the three axes to focus on

Le Chili et l’UE ont signé en 2002 un Accord d'association (AA) ambitieux et innovateur basé sur trois piliers: politique, commercial et de coopération. Pourquoi l’UE a-t-elle signé un tel accord avec un pays de 15 millions d’habitants comme le Chili? Cet accord n’est-il pas en contradiction avec la politique de l’UE d’appui à l’intégration régionale? La « spécificité chilienne », liée à de bonnes performances économiques, à une compétitivité externe élevée et à des niveaux de corruption bas, a conforté la décision prise par l’UE de signer l’AA avec le Chili. Par ailleurs, pendant les années 1990 un contexte favorable s’est développé au sein de l’UE et au Chili qui a favorisé leur rapprochement. L’UE était aussi convaincue que le Chili deviendrait membre à part entière du Mercosur et pour cette raison décida d’entamer des négociations pour la réalisation des AA avec le Chili et le Mercosur en parallèle. Avec cette stratégie elle voulait renforcer ses relations avec le Chili en vue d’une possible association et promouvoir l’intégration régionale en créant des liens entre les deux processus en vue d’une intégration du Chili dans le Mercosur. Quand en juin 2000 le Chili a informé la partie européenne qu’il ne deviendrait pas membre à part entière du Mercosur, la nouvelle équipe dirigeante des négociateurs de la Commission européenne a accepté cette position. Les négociations avec le Mercosur étant de fait bloquées et l’adhésion pleine du Chili au Mercosur n’étant plus à l’ordre du jour, l’UE a essayé par cet accord de renforcer sa présence politique et commerciale dans un pays qu’elle percevait comme un facteur de stabilité régionale et comme «modèle»<br>In 2002, Chile and the European Union signed an ambitious and innovative Association Agreement (AA) based on three pillars: political, trade and cooperation. Why did the EU sign such an accord with a country of 15 million people like Chile? Was this agreement not in contradiction with the EU’s policy of supporting regional integration? In fact, the “Chilean specificity” - characterized by the country’s good economic performance, strong competitive position internationally, and low levels of corruption - reinforced the EU’s decision to sign the AA with Chile. In addition, developments during the 1990s within both the EU and Chile favoured their rapprochement. The EU was also convinced that Chile would become a full member of Mercosur and as a result decided to begin AA negotiations with Chile and Mercosur in parallel. With this strategy, the EU aimed to both reinforce its ties with Chile ahead of a possible association agreement and promote regional integration by creating a link between the two processes, in view of Chile’s integration into Mercosur. When Chile informed the Europeans in June 2000 that it would not become a full member of Mercosur, the new team of European Commission negotiators accepted this position. With their talks with Mercosur at a standstill and Chile’s membership in that bloc off the table, the focus shifted to using the AA with Chile to reinforce the EU’s political and trade presence in a country it viewed as a “model” and a factor that contributed to regional stability

Si ces deux organisations se firent d'abord concurrence, s'opposèrent même parfois, comme ce fut le cas lors de l'affaire Scottsboro, certains rapprochements s'esquissèrent un peu plus tard, dans la période du Second New Deal, notamment à l'occasion du National Negro Congress, tandis que la syndicalisation des ouvriers noirs devenait possible grâce à la fondation d'une nouvelle confédération syndicale, le Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). La NAACP et le PCUS, deux organisations que tout semblait séparer, furent donc amenées à se " rencontrer " autour de la question noire, et à modifier sensiblement certaines habitudes, comportements, ou réflexes. Alors que la NAACP se rapprochait du peuple noir, les militants communistes, en acquérant sur le terrain une expérience concrète, aidèrent le Parti à modérer sa rhétorique révolutionnaire. The study uses the literature analysis in the case study of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission for Schools (WASC ACS) to undertake an investigation of the primary and secondary school accreditation system in America. The case study will serve in the development of primary and secondary school evaluation system in Taiwan and in proposing recommendations for future research.
The main findings of the study are as follows:
1. Effects and benefits of the primary and secondary school accreditation system occur on many levels.
2. The accreditation system of the primary and secondary school is granted by nongovernmental accrediting agencies.
3. The accreditation system of the primary and secondary school of the WASC ACS provides stimulus for improvement through institutional self-study.
4. The accreditation system of the primary and secondary school of the WASC ACS places emphasis on school's focus on student achievement of the expected schoolwide learning results.
5. The transparency, reliability, and accountability of primary and secondary school accreditation system of the WASC ACS need to be strengthened.
6. The professionalism and impartiality of the visiting committee members of the primary and secondary school accreditation system of the WASC ACS need to be further confirmed.

When considering sports in its globality, one wouldn’t probably directly associate it with politics, however throughout history sports has been used both as a diplomatic strategy and as a soft power tool. If there is a perfect example for this type of strategies, is the United States of America, they were one of the first to utilize sports for diplomatic outcomes with the famous case of “ping-pong diplomacy” with the intent of stablishing a beneficial relation with China. The US are also known for their spectacular, grandiose and impressive sporting leagues and sporting events, that can ultimately be utilized as a form of soft power by the country itself. With that being said, the following thesis will study how one of the most important sporting leagues of the U.S., the National Basketball Association, may have utilized its own soft power to protest the acting government. More specifically, I will explore how the 2019/2020 NBA season, and all of the events surrounding that season, may have triggered a political and activist stance by the NBA community and, ultimately, affected the US 2020 Presidential election.<br>Quando consideramos desporto de uma forma global, não o associamos diretamente a política, no entanto, ao longo da história, o desporto tem sido utilizado como uma estratégia diplomática e como uma ferramenta de poder suave. Se há um exemplo perfeito da utilização deste tipo de estratégias, é o exemplo dos Estados Unidos da América, visto que foram um dos primeiros estados a utilizar o desporto para fins diplomáticos através do famoso caso da “diplomacia do pingue-pongue” com a intenção de estabelecer uma relação positiva com a China. Os EUA são também conhecidos pela grandiosidade e espetacularidade das suas ligas e dos seus eventos desportivos, o que ultimamente pode ser utilizado com uma forma de poder suave pelo país. Tendo isso em conta, a presente tese irá estudar como é que uma das mais importantes ligas desportivas dos EUA, a Associação Nacional de Basquetebol Americana (NBA), poderá ter usado o seu próprio poder suave para protestar contra o governo em função. Mais especificamente, irei explorar como é que a temporada 2019/2020 da NBA, e todos os eventos à volta dessa temporada, podem ter provocado uma atitude política e ativista por parte da comunidade da NBA, que por fim poderá ter afetado as eleições Americanas de 2020.

The British North America Act, 1930 (the Natural Resources Transfer Agreements or NRTAs) marked the end of a lengthy battle between the provincial governments of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba and the federal government of Canada. Prior to 1930, the provincial governments did not have administrative control over their natural resources, which were managed by the federal Department of the Interior. As a result, the three prairie provinces did not share equal constitutional status with the other Canadian provinces that did control their own resources. Under the terms of the new constitutionalized intergovernmental agreements the provincial governments agreed to fulfil all of the federal government’s continuing obligations to third parties after the transfer. One of these obligations was the redemption of Métis scrip issued by the federal government to extinguish the Métis share of Aboriginal land title. After the transfer, however, the provinces resisted granting more land to satisfy what they considered to be a federal obligation. The provinces refused to redeem Métis scrip entitlements and the federal government did not enforce the terms of the NRTAs. Both the federal and provincial governments failed to live up to the terms of the constitutional agreement and the Métis scrip issue fell through the jurisdictional cracks of Canadian federalism. This dissertation examines the historical context and consequences surrounding the Alberta and Saskatchewan government’s failure to recognize Métis scripholders’ rights-based claims to land. Each provincial government pursued different avenues with respect to natural resources and Métis policies. The purpose of this study is to examine the different phases of policy development in each province in light of the general failure of recognition.
The transfer of control and administration of the public domain from one level of government to another provides interesting insights into the history of government-Aboriginal relations in Canada. Aboriginal people (including Métis) were not consulted during the negotiations leading up to the NRTAs; nevertheless (or perhaps as a result), the transfer agreements were a catalyst for political organization in several Métis communities. Métis who had been living on federal crown land were concerned that the transfer of lands to the provinces would negatively impact their right to pursue traditional livelihoods such as hunting, fishing and trapping. In Alberta, the NRTAs sparked the formation of the Métis Association of Alberta, a political lobbying group that advocated recognition of historical claims to land. During this period, parallel Métis living in Saskatchewan and Manitoba created parallel organizations. These political groups represent some of the earliest attempts by Aboriginal people in the prairie provinces to voice their concerns and influence government policy.
There are three recurrent themes in this study. First, land appears as a point of convergence for Métis claims and an alternative to the distribution of government social assistance due to high levels of unemployment. Second, Métis political organizing affects government policy-making. Third, the thesis notes the marked change in policy direction by the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) government in Saskatchewan after its election in 1944. The CCF introduced natural resources policies based on social democratic principles such as collective marketing. One of the most striking phenomena in the first half of the 20th century was the influx of Chinese intellectuals into America to receive Western education. Studies in the past, however, often depicted the history of American-educated Chinese students simply as the history of Chinese students returning from America. For a long time the foreign exposure and experience of the Chinese intellectuals did not draw enough attention from the academia. If we agree that one of the valuable contributions that the West can make to China was the spiritual values in Western civilization, the encounter between the intellectuals and the Christian idealism would probably be a very important issue. It is not the purpose of this research to re-write the history of American-returned students in any depth. The author would like to focus on a group of "China's American-educated youths" who has encountered modern Christianity. Although they were not all followers or baptized Christians, they adhered to the principles of Christianity as the highest standard for measuring the changing circumstances in China and in the world.<br>To unite the Chinese Christians in the United States, the Chinese Students' Christian Association in North America was founded in 1909 by a group of Chinese Christian students. The objective of the Association was similar to the Young Men's Christian Association. Through a case study of the Chinese Students' Christian Association in North America, the author attempts to depict the spiritual feature of the American-educated Chinese students as a single group. This dissertation argues that they intentionally chose the social gospel, which adopted the Kingdom of God as the key concept, in the quest fort he modern religious belief. By making critical assessment and judgment on the non-Christian order in the society, political arena and the internationals cene, they longed for the realization of the earthly democratic kingdom which suited to the home country and the world. Disappointed in politics, the China's American-educated youths did not turn into mere spectators. The Christian idealism made them profoundly aware of the sociopolitical realm of China and the world. The aim of this diploma thesis is characterization and evaluation of programs and projects, which are proceeding in United States of America to support children's reading skills. The first part is devoted to reading to children from birth to six years, impact of books to children, and to factors, which are influencing the beginning of reading. In other chapters are presented projects of American Library Association and its division Association for Library Services to Children. In the following, the programs of selected libraries and non-profit organization are mentioned (for example Mother Goose on the Loose, Birth to six or Reach out and Read). In the last part is described the situation in Czech Republic. There are presented projects like Celé Česko čte dětem, Rosteme s knihou, Poprvé do školy - Poprvé do knihovny, and also cooperation of libraries and kindergartens.
