Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of participation in a single sport small-sided games (SSG) programme compared to a multi-sport SSG programme on the physical fitness, gross motor coordination, soccer skills and application of tactics during soccer games of grade four children from a disadvantaged community. Two intact classes of boys and girls (n= 39 and n=40) participated in a six-week, 2x per week intervention programme. One class specialized in soccer and the other engaged in a diversified programme where they sampled hockey and team handball along with soccer. In terms of pedagogy, both classes followed a deliberate play model with its focus on intrinsic learning and non-intervention by a coach. Data were collected during pre-, post- and retention test periods. Both boys’ groups achieved significant improvements in their muscle endurance-push-ups, power and aerobic endurance on the retention test. Only the boys who participated in the multi-sport SSG programme achieved a significant improvement on their muscle endurance-sit-ups. The girls from both groups showed significant improvements in all physical fitness variables, with the exception of the girls in the muti-sport programme who did not achieve a significant improvement in their speed. Significant improvements were experienced by all groups for gross motor coordination and soccer skills. The boys in the soccer SSG programme demonstrated improvements in both offensive and defensive tactics while the boys in the multi-sport SSG programme improved in the application of their defensive tactics only. The girls who participated in the soccer SSG programme also improved in their defensive tactics while the girls who participated in the multi-sport SSG programme achieved improvements in their application of both offensive and defensive tactics. The results of this study support proponents of the Developmental Model of Sport Participation as presented in current sport pedagogy literature, who claim that the physical and tactical benefits pre-pubescent children derive from participation in a diversified games programme will be similar to those benefits derived from participation in a specialized sport-specific game programme, providing the sports involved are late specialization sports. These results support the conclusion that it is not necessary for pre-pubescent children to specialize in a late specialization sport such as soccer in order to progress in their ability to play soccer. They can make similar progress if they participate in a diversified games programme that provides them with a broader experience with sports that have similar physical and tactical requirements.

Abstract:
MBA Professional Report
The purpose of this MBA Project is to investigate and provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of affairs with regard to the privatized security industry. The project focuses on a business plan that will cover three phases for a start-up company to enter the private security market. The purpose of Advanced Security Operations Corporation (ASOC) is to enter and profit from the growing Privatized Military Industry (PMI) trend. This proposal looks at establishing a network of centralized SWAT teams whose sole mission is to train and conduct SWAT operations. These teams will greatly increase the chance of success and minimize casualties, while greatly reducing cost. ASOC will use collaborative efforts with local, state and national law enforcement agencies in order to maximize this innovative and value-added plan. The goal of government should be to drastically reduce the cost of redundant and inefficient services. By following the trend to outsource services and create a privately run and centrally located SWAT Team, the local, state, and federal government can create a long term capability that is less expensive, yet has a greater capability for mission success. The costeffectiveness and problems/solutions that would face such an endeavor are the focus of this project.

Abstract:
Our everyday lives are surrounded by gadgets and digital devices that help us perform our daily chores with ease and efficiency. However, these digital devices can also separate us from what we should do ourselves. Although children who are exposed to high levels of technology might become attuned to the latest and the best gadgets, they might not learn to use their physical abilities. Another implication of a child’s over dependence on technology is that parental interactions such as encouragement, tutoring and reinforcement are provided by gadgets rather than living, breathing parents. Research done by Padma Ravichandran and Brandel France de Bravo, revealed the importance of child interaction with live people and games noting that “Very young children learn best by relating to real live people, but they also learn by moving and doing. Part of the problem with screen time is that young children who watch TV and DVDs or use computer games may be substituting these activities for free play”. The aim of this project is to reduce the gap between young children and the tactile world by creating toys that are attractive for the children, but are low-tech and involve parental interaction. Thus, the primary goal that this thesis seeks to achieve is the stimulation of children toward tactile games, while the secondary goal is to allow and encourage parental involvement in the playtime of the child. The research is guided by the premise that children can absorb substantial knowledge through the tactile world and that such tactile centered play will broaden the horizon of their knowledge and experience.

Abstract:
The induction process creates a first impression of the organisation and have a great importance regarding new employees’ comfort at work. An inadequate or seemingly absent induction process for new hires can therefore be vital regarding if the person choose to stay in the organisation or look for other alternatives. In the pre study a survey was conducted at Servicekontoret, Sandviken municipality. The purpose of the survey was to find out why Servicekontoret had a hard time finding and retaining new employees. The survey showed that Servicekontorets poor induction program of new employees was the main reason. The purpose of this study was to create and implement a digital induction program with routines. To enable to map the current state and identify potential improvements, eight interviews, one observation and one document collection were conducted. The result was analysed against a framework based on Human Resource Management (HRM) and Total Quality Management (TQM). The analyse proved that Servicekontorets induction program was characterized by individualized socialization tactics rather than institutionalized socialization tactics. A negative result since research has shown that employees tend to experience more positive job attitudes, higher levels of fit, and lower levels of turnover after they go through institutionalized socialization tactics compared with those who undergo individualized tactics. Based on previous research, the new induction program was designed according to institutionalized socialization tactics. The program has also been designed based on diversity strategies and new routines have been developed, including following up on new hires. Finally, the program has undergone a quality assurance based on TQM.  It is important to keep in mind that quality management is an ongoing work rather than project management with a definite beginning and end. The new induction program creates a good first impression of Servicekontoret, but it is not enough to ensure that new employees will stay in the organisation. It is now up to Servicekontoret to administer the result from this study and continue improving the induction.

Skaret, Michael. "Digitala krigsspel i taktikutbildning." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-2737.

Abstract:
The Swedish Armed Forces’ budget is getting smaller, that means a lot less practice with real ammunitions and vehicles. Because of this, the interest for digital war games and simulations has increased.  But to use games in education you need to know how you are going to implement them. The purpose with this paper has been to examine the possibility of only using a digital war game for learning. Will the participants learn tactics by just playing a game? The impact this could have is that learners could bring the game home and train whenever they wanted to. There are several views that support and reject the idea of using gamebased learning. This paper will focus on describing two of these theories.  An experiment was done to examine if the digital game itself could increase the quality of the tactical plans that the participants had made. The experiment had two groups which had an assignment to make a tactical plan on a platoon level, one of the groups also got to play a digital war game before they made the tactical plan. The assessment of the plans was made by a tactical teacher at the Defense Collage and the results of the assessment did not give any results that showed any significant difference from the groups. The game itself did not have any impact on the quality of the plan. But there were indications that the game might have had other impact on its participants.

Purnomo, Deavi. "Developing collaborative planning support tools for optimised farming in Western Australia." Thesis, Curtin University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/2295.

Full text
Abstract:
Land-use (farm) planning is a highly complex and dynamic process. A land-use plan can be optimal at one point in time, but its currency can change quickly due to the dynamic nature of the variables driving the land-use decision-making process. These include external drivers such as weather and produce markets, that also interact with the biophysical interactions and management activities of crop production. The active environment of an annual farm planning process can be envisioned as being cone-like. At the beginning of the sowing year, the number of options open to the manager is huge, although uncertainty is high due to the inability to foresee future weather and market conditions. As the production year reveals itself, the uncertainties around weather and markets become more certain, as does the impact of weather and management activities on future production levels. This restricts the number of alternative management options available to the farm manager. Moreover, every decision made, such as crop type sown in a paddock, will constrains the range of management activities possible in that paddock for the rest of the growing season. This research has developed a prototype Land-use Decision Support System (LUDSS) to aid farm managers in their tactical farm management decision making. The prototype applies an innovative approach that mimics the way in which a farm manager and/or consultant would search for optimal solutions at a whole-farm level. This model captured the range of possible management activities available to the manager and the impact that both external (to the farm) and internal drivers have on crop production and the environment. It also captured the risk and uncertainty found in the decision space. The developed prototype is based on a Multiple Objective Decision-making (MODM) - á Posteriori approach incorporating an Exhaustive Search method. The objective set used for the model is: maximising profit and minimising environmental impact. Pareto optimisation theory was chosen as the method to select the optimal solution and a Monte Carlo simulator is integrated into the prototype to incorporate the dynamic nature of the farm decision making process. The prototype has a user-friendly front and back end to allow farmers to input data, drive the application and extract information easily.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last decades, film theories with their focus on the mere audiovisual quality of cinema have been questioned by film scholars with a phenomenological interest. According to these critical approaches, the film experience cannot be understood through a mere involvement of the eye (and the ear). In this context, to disregard the significance of a multisensory attachment to the film results in the consideration of relationship between the film and the viewer to be a dominating one. This dissertation examines this multisensory attachment and aims to define the film experience as an embodied relationship between the film and the viewer by means of a formal analysis of the Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s early films. Throughout the dissertation, it is argued that Ceylan encourages his viewer in various forms to have a more sensual and immediate experience of his films rather than to compel them to adhere to symbols and abstractions through a kind of intellectual effort – an intellectual effort that would damage the “sensuous” attachment between the film and the viewer.

Beltrano, Victoria Ann. "urban blind fields: creative public reclamations." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/4580.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary criticism of the North American urban public realm has reached an unproductive state of exhaustion. For some time, it has painted a rather bleak portrait of public space attributed to the impacts of global private economic forces, the disintegration of traditional civic ideals and an increasing uncertainty in its ideal (or even relevant) spatial form. If a productive and meaningful dialogue about the public realm and architecture’s contribution to it is to emerge, a more complete definition of this realm must include the impacts of its informal others. This research-based thesis examines the city’s spaces and actors of hidden appearance as a contribution to that expanded definition. In so doing, it finds a more appropriate means for their description in what Henri Lefebvre terms the urban blind field. Just as the human eye’s blind spot is subjective, the urban blind field too is dynamic and shifting. Looking from multiple viewpoints is necessary to the blind field’s exposure and more genuine portrayal. The research centres around a series of blind fields encountered during field research undertaken across Toronto, Canada. Each is reconceived and foregrounded through participant actions upon them, rather than by professional design alone. Three fundamental urban acts — play, exchange and cultivation — serve as a loose framework for the theoretical, photographic and discursive explorations thereof. This thesis asserts that blind fields possess within them the seeds of active urban democracy — challenging contemporary criticism’s bleak claims. Therefore, their maintenance is paramount to a rich and active ongoing public realm. As a relational concept, the blind field also exposes a fertile means of reconsidering architectural praxis and its relationship to space, material, time and participatory hierarchies.

Abstract:

Considering the large financial investment made by broadcasters and sponsors in the game of rugby union recently, the nature of elite rugby as a spectacle is of great interest to these parties as well as the game's administrators. What style of play characterises international rugby Test matches? Are they exhibitions of the best that rugby has to offer, characterised by an exciting, expansive and inherently risky style of play? Or do their participants reflect a defensive, no -mistakes, safety -first attitude borne of the weight of national expectations and the spectre of losing a high -profile and financially rewarding position in the national team? Is an expansive style of play conducive to winning Test matches? Which national teams exhibited expansive styles of play in their respective international competitions in 1998?

Studies have been conducted using notational analysis to identify and measure indicators of a team's willingness to play expansive rugby (Carter and Potter, cited in Ackford,1995c; Thomas, cited in Ackford, 1997c). Honan (1996) has identified two indicators of a team's use of an expansive game style. Firstly, the attack ratio calculates number of general play passes (discounting scrumhalf passes) divided by the number of general play kicks. The second indicator counts the number of passes per attack. Eight games from the 1998 Five Nations Championship and all six games of the 1998 Tri- Nations series were analysed. The total number of passes, kicks, runs, successful runs, tries, penalties, conversions and phases were recorded. From this data, each team's attack ratio, number of passes per attack, successful run percentage and run -kick ratio were calculated.

Two further indicators of a team's style of play were taken and measured from Thomas' study (Ackford, 1997c). These were the percentage of total points scored as tries and the time in the match that these tries were scored. Results revealed that, in their respective international competitions, England (336%), France (345%) and Scotland (304%) had higher attack ratios than New Zealand (257%), South Africa (203%) and Australia (150%). New Zealand, out of the eight countries analysed, had the highest number of passes per attack with 1.64 (and did not win a game in the Tri-Nations series) while Australia had the lowest number of passes per attack with 1.18.

These results would appear to indicate that the 1998 Tri-Nations series exhibited less expansive rugby than was evidenced in all of the 1998 Five Nations games played by England and Scotland and the majority of games played by France. This suggests either a more effective defensive contribution in 1998 Tri-Nations matches or a greater willingness to attack with the ball -in -hand on the part of England, Scotland and France. In light of England's performances against Australia and South Africa in late 1998 and Scotland's winning of the 1999 Five Nations Championship, this data might have proved a useful predictor of these countries' intended tactical direction.

When defining a training plan for a group of players there is an enormity of aspects which haveto be considered and in order to do that the coach should possess great knowledge at practical, pedagogical and theoretical levels. It is important to have be aware of the player’s individualcharacteristics, their expectations, previously acquired knowledge, physical conditioning amonga great number of other aspects.Throughout this methodological proposal, football coaching will be approached through acollective view which requires a high level of technical proficiency from the players. It is thecoach’s responsibility to assess the technical level of the players at their disposition and evaluatewhether to go through with a team focused approach. All football players go through several stages of development and within this methodologicalproposal the main identified benefits are the gains in tactical awareness levels and spatialawareness. In order to achieve high levels of tactical and spatial awareness the focus on theindividual will be somewhat limited and this is clearly the biggest drawback when applying theproposed activities as time on the ball will decrease. The methodological proposal at hand is based on an extensive bibliographical revision whichmain intent is to create a proposal based on applicable theoretical fundamentals onto a practicein which the transferability between training and formal game is the main parameter to berespected. Through the application of the proposed activities it is expected that players reachhigh levels of tactical and spatial awareness as well as a high level of technical proficiencyadapted to the position occupied on the pitch through repetition of collective movements. Playersae also expected to experience physical demands similar to the ones expected during a formalgame. As a conclusion, the main purpose of this methodological proposal is to guarantee a high level oftransferability between the training of the formal game through the use of positional play bydesigning activities which will ultimately make players repeat tactical and technical movementsand have players exposed to situations similar to the ones faced during formal games both inattacking and defending tasks.

It culminates with a game plan model that incorporates all the key steps and tasks that mining investors and entrepreneurs need to use to establish globally competitive junior mining companies. It is based on the research of several listed junior mining companies. The game of junior mining is defined by rules, the player, the elements of playing, and the definitions of winning and scoring. The rules of the game are those defined by the resources industry and general business concepts. The mining assets around which the junior mining game is played are exploration projects, feasibility studies, mine development projects or operating mines. The player is the junior mining company intent on winning the game. Playing the game is done through executing the steps, tasks and simple models and matrices associated with the four business pillars: strategy development, legal and financial, operations management and risks management. The first pillar is strategic, while the last three pillars are tactical. For each business pillar, databases were developed, for the purposes of creating references and benchmarks for the game plan. The databases have been created from the analysis of twenty randomly selected junior mining companies, the author’s practical experiences and previous research. Scoring the game is undertaken by completing the game score matrix, which scores the mining assets, the business pillars and the financial performance, and provides an overall company score. The total company score highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the company. Undertaking the process of playing the game iteratively will lead to creating a globally competitive junior mining company. Winning the game is defined as creating a sustainable junior mining company, that grows to a mid-tier company, or is bought out by a major mining company. ii In the thesis, the game is played using the hypothetical case study of a of a coal junior mining company, with a marginal coal mine, an attractive feasibility study and an exploration project. Step by step the game is played leading to a company score and exposing the company’s strengths and weaknesses. The research concludes by presenting a holistic game plan model that can be applied to any junior mining company in any commodity in constantly changing resources industry dynamics.

Abstract The purpose of this research is understanding player’s application, difference of the tactical type and the tactic which they used when they got or lose points during the single play of male player in Quarterfinals of 2011 World Badminton Championships. The objects of study are the three competitions of male single play in Quarterfinals of 2011 World Badminton Championships. The main method of this study is observing and analyzing the film, using statistics software SPSS 18.0 and looking into the application, testing the difference by descriptive statistics, One-Way ANOVA etc. The result of the research: I. The most commonly tactic is hit to whole coury with attack by varied basic skills, and the second is level pumping flat block and attack by changeable speed, II. The main service type is short service; the minor is deep/high service, and the rate is about 1:3, III. The most commonly skill is lob; the minor is netplay and drive, IV. Aspect of tactic: There are obvious differences between hit to whole coury with attack by varied basic skills, attack by changeable speed and level pumping flat block; aspect of skill: There are obvious differences between deep/high service, short service, clear, smash, drop, lob, drive, netplay, V. When get a point, the main tactic is hit to whole coury with attack by varied basic skills, and the main skill is smash. When lose a point, the main tactic is hit to whole coury with attack by varied basic skills, and the main skill is smash, VI. The time of every part(s) is 1211.43s.the average time of every round(s) is 11.1s.The average time of every slap(s) is 0.95s.The average time of every Intermittent(s) is22.6s,It indicated that elite badminton player need to play more powerfully and consistently to win a point. Keywords: observational survey, unforced errors, winners.

Alexander, Jeremy P. "A framework for quantifying tactical team behaviour in Australian Rules Football." Thesis, 2020. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/40991/.

Full text
Abstract:
The inception of tracking technologies has allowed for increased access to the positioning data of team sport athletes. This information assists in understanding collective team behaviour by measuring the continuous movement patterns of players. Assessing the efficacy of collective team behaviour research requires comprehension of the contextual factors that may influence movement behaviour, such as the match phase and field location of the ball. Limited studies that have analysed collective team behaviour have accounted for such contextual variables. Research on collective team behaviour in invasion sports has typically focused on football and basketball, while investigations in Australian football (AF) remain largely absent. Furthermore, collective team behaviour investigations to date have generally inferred performance through the positioning of players without directly determining the continuous influence on match play. Therefore, this thesis presents new methodologies for measuring collective team behaviour in AF. This information was used to understand the extent to which collective team behaviour influenced match play in a continuous manner. The findings provide a framework to quantify tactical team behaviour in Australian Rules football (AFL). Global positioning systems (GPS) spatiotemporal datasets were obtained from match simulation sessions and elite-level AFL matches. This information was aligned with match event data to provide contextual information, such as match phase and ball location. Initial chapters investigated the collective behaviour of AF teams using a macroscopic approach during match simulation and a competitive match. This was undertaken using a range of spatiotemporal metrics that summarise how certain players are positioned across a field of play. These chapters identified teams that were able to obtain increased possession of the ball covered greater spatial regions. Players also repositioned deeper towards their own goal when the ball was in their defensive half and relocated higher up the field when the ball was in their forward half. Subsequent chapters used a microscopic approach to model the position of every player to understand the spatial control of each team across a playing surface. The central findings from these chapters were that the total number of players increased based on where the ball was positioned and both teams obtained greater spatial control compared to the opposition when the ball was in their defensive half. Teams were also able to arrest spatial control when forcing a turnover in possession. The general findings from this thesis are spatiotemporal metrics can be used to infer tactical behaviour. A method that continuously represents how players occupy sub-areas of play may provide coaches and sport science practitioners with a more precise account of how tactical team behaviour influences ensuing match play. Finally, quantifying the resistive exchange in spatial control between teams and detecting the value placed on controlling specific regions may contribute to providing a more representative understanding of tactical team behaviour.

Abstract:
Preferences for sexual arousal by overstated dominance and submission in sex is categorized as F65.5, sadomasochism, according to ICD, but this behaviour is called BDSM among the general public. The ground of these preferences could be ultimately biological. These preferences reflect behavioural strategy which enables to gain higher reproductive success. Men and women who were sexually aroused by a submissive partner had more male relatives than men and women with other preferences. Contrary to the women, the dominant men reported themselves as more attractive. Women who were aroused by a higher-ranking partner considered themselves more attractive. Sons of couples in which was hierarchical disparity had more siblings than sons of "equal" couples or couples with no hierarchical disparity. Daughters of hierarchically disparate couples had more brothers than daughters of "both dominant" partners. Concurrently, number and gender of offspring as well as self- reported attractiveness are likely to be criteria of the reproductive success in humans. It is also interesting that hierarchically disparate couples, without regard to gender of higher-ranking partner, reached higher reproductive success than "equal" couples. Individuals who preferred higher- or lower-ranking partner were also aroused by...

Abstract:
This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.
